What happens when one takes a murderous psychopath and forces them to team up with a cowardly tinkerer? Though not a question that Jeremiah ever expected to ponder, he is nevertheless looking forward to seeing what the aforementioned duo will cook up. Success or failure does not matter to Richard, only that the journey be entertaining.
Things are far less jovial for the one under Tom's 'care,' however. Stuck in the monster-infested wilderness, lacking the usual backup, hunted by the Empire's top brass and tasked with an incredibly vague and obtuse Quest, Boxxy will face a world of uncertainty and adversity. However, this is nothing new. Pain, suffering and loss are things that have been commonplace since day one, and Boxxy is not only entirely undaunted, but also eager to share those valuable lessons with its new 'companion.' With things both shiny and tasty on the line, the crafty killer has every intention of showing that lich who's boss.
I’m pretty disappointed. Spoiler Warning: In the story one of the characters is abused and bullied for about a third of the book and when it escalates to her being raped I just lost all interest in the book. I was ready to stop reading after the third chapter because I just kept getting annoyed and upset while I was reading but kept reading to see if there was somehow a way for the author to “fix” the story. They don’t. She was raped simply to progress her personal story and give her a reason for wanting a power up that makes her unfeeling and help with the trauma. Even though the author seemed to understand how serious that was and didn’t play it for jokes it still felt like a cheap way to advance a character since she’s still forced to help her rapist. Ironically in the very first book of this series Boxxy himself said “Rape isn’t tasty” and drew a line for himself that he wouldn’t cross. Sure you could argue that it fits his character to do something if he has something to gain from it, but after reading the entire book I no longer care about any of these characters anymore and I have no plans on ever buying the next installment of this series.
Expect all the hilarity and fun of the earlier volumes to continue on in this book, but also all the kinda creepy sex stuff too... In fact it's going to get worse with Honestly I barely made it past that scene, the book bordered on DNF-ing for me because of it, and it's the knowledge that this probably won't be the last time that makes me unsure whether I'll pick up the next volume at all.
It's such a pity though because there's such funny stuff in here, and great ideas. I mean I loved the class changes made by the two characters who changed,
Plenty more dungeon-crawling fun and laughter await you in this volume.
I was disappointed with this book. There's a whole lot of nothing going on with the story. There are some really good parts, but they are far and few between. A lot of the plot is about Boxy levelling up, and that includes him doing mundane tasks. There were sex scenes, but they were put in just for the sake of it. The last one was the best, but not expanded.
Fizzy. My feelings for her range from sadness to her plight to annoyance at her character. I don't really like her character arc. Snack and Arms seemed almost like background characters just there for the R-rated parts.
I'll probably read the next book, because I do enjoy this unique character. I just wish there's more action, and a better storyline next time. This book feels like a filler.
Audiobook - Jeff Hayes was brilliant as usual. I love his narration.
Sadly this book is trash. I loved the first book. It took me a long time to read the first book because of how raunchy the title was. I was pleasantly surprised that the book was not as raunchy as the title. Sadly the second book was as raunchy as the title of the first book, and this book is just wrong. I’m okay with the author having a tentacle porn fetish, what I don’t get though is why he had to share that sick fascination with his readers. If this was all I would have still have given this book 3 stars but the accidental rape that happens was handled all wrong. Yes the character that was rapped is one of the best characters in the book and she becomes a complete bad ass, but the way that happens basically says rape is a good thing, and it is not. The non sex riddled parts of the book are amazing and hilarious but the book is ruined by too many useless sex scenes and a tasteless rape.
Dunno what happens in November and why everyone needs translations done, but it happens, and I am very tired with way too much on my plate. So, wasn’t feeling like any serious book. Resulting in the happy little find: apparently Everybody Loves Large Chests already got the third book out called “Vortena” by Neven Iliev. And there was a lot of good in this book. But one big fat bad too.
About: Boxxy is on a quest to level up and find more shinies and tasties. It would be preferable to do so via Unholy Wealth ritual, but if leveling up is what it takes, he’ll do it. To help along the way he blackmails a lich into becoming part of the team. One that he killed himself in the past. Twice. But, being just a brainless box, he didn’t see how that could possibly create an issue with loyalty, and, destroying newly found dungeon left and right, went on the quest. After all, the dilema wasn’t the Nasty new team member. It was the fact that upon leveling up Boxxy will cease being this perfect shape of a chest. He’ll evolve into a brand new creature.
Mine: There were a lot of great and funny moments, not the smallest being Boxxy’s agoraphobia, or his quick dubbing of lich as “nasty” due to her horrible flavor. But one thing bothered me from the second it occurred: I will absolutely never understand why rape is necessary for character development when everything else points to it being unnecessary. Including the common sense. So after the character finally got abused to a point where she started considering suicide, the rest of the book just stopped being as amusing. The only excuse that left me reading was the fact that she was given great power, and as sincere an apology as one could give under the circumstances, including the improvement in behavior towards her.
It’s an alright book. Was pretty funny at points, and I still love this concept of a mob being the hero. Our little gnome story was upsetting tho, and absolutely unnecessary. 4 out of 5 is the very best I can do, merely because I hope in the next book she takes some form of closure-vengeance.
The interesting crew of quest mates grew and changed and matured? The box became something better, the fights became more strategic and blood thirsty. weakness was allowed and the conspiracy of war grew and became... odd? Im curious about the next installment. And impressed that they are growing in page number. :D
These books are the perfect blend of dark and wit. I love how the author is unapologetic in his writing and stays true to his character's dark natures. Then he balances it out all with humor so it never gets morbid or depressing.
Yes yes and yes! I could Not stop laughing at the world's misery and Boxxy's antics! Fabulous character transition with Fizzy btw. I mean, with a job like hers, anything was possible. I really wanted to read about a simple moment of non-thought wherein Boxxy ate her, (on accident of course) but i felt like what you did was much better and has good future potential. As well as being funny as fuck in it's own right. I also enjoyed how we're seeing a deeper shade of Xera without losing the humorous scenes of depravity and perversion. I rate this as my top favorite in litrpg, fantasy, and comedy. Number 1 in all 3 categories. Can't wait to read more! P. S. I have no constructive criticism to add... I was too busy laughing my ass off to care about one grammatical flaw, and I have zero qualms with any of the world building or characters. Rock on!
Great book that continues the journey of our favourite homicidal chest. Still laugh out loud on places but sadly to short as I finished it in a day and a bit. I need more!
I read book 1 because of a lost bet. I am glad I lost that bet.
Book 2 because it was a “WTF, a sequel?!?!”
And this book because of the sheer edge that the cliffhanger had left.
Oh, I should mention that i purchased this book 6 hours ago and slept for 4 of those hours. I could NOT put this down.
The Incident was disturbing and cringeworthy BUT it moved the plot and character development along in a natural Boxxy T. Morningwood isk manner. (Those that have read the book most likely Know what I’m talking about here. I’m not spoiling it and it was kinda wrong)
This book also explains why a certain character is on the author’s website and gives a nice chunk of the plot to satisfy a good subplot segment. (Again, no overt spoilers)
I will be frank, I will look forward to a Book 4. If for nothing else than to see what eventually happens between Boxxy and Edward. For some reason I had the phrase “Zoning Out” pop into my head with the conclusion and with a character called Zone in this story.......
As ever, the murderous Boxxy plundered its way across the land in search of loot, power and ways of destruction. I can see Boxxy becoming a merchant ,a mayor or long lost but found again Royal cousin Chester in the future.
Great. Thanks for leaving the sex in. While not the man theme, to me it makes the book so much better, but I'm kind of a pervert. Anyway, this is one of my favorite book series ever. Everyone should read this,as long as their over eighteen.
Everyone's favorite monster main character is on fire! Boxxy is one of the best leads for a story, ever. Netflix or Amazon need to make this at least an anime, if not a live action and cgi!
The third book was an improvement over the second as Boxxy continues to work to build his levels. The things that made the first book fresh are long gone, but it seems to me that the author realizes that and spent this book repositioning the series to give a new kind of challenge to his party of monsters. Like book two, this one reads a little slow but I still enjoyed it.
Not as good as his last 2. (Please keep in mind this is a opinion!) With Boxy getting smarter with every level he gains the "Funny dumb mimic" moments are getting less and less. And that is a good thing its development dont get me wrong.
I think I just went into this book wrong. I wanted more dumb mimic. But I got a Mimic who wants revenge insted. It's a good story on it's own. Just not what I was expecting.
The plot thickens and I enjoyed every bit of it. The storyline in this third volume in the series is becoming more complex, with even more fun adventures, clever wordplays, and very funny misunderstandings. We’re all rooting for Boxxy/Chester and his ever-growing band of minions of course. There are more new side characters we get to know, like Bob the god of chaos or whatever her actual name is (this in itself is a small but humorous plot device), the ever-suspicious Edward and his hybrid assistant and of course the Vortena from the title. One of my favorite sidekicks Carl is back too, for Boxxy decides to make one of his hilarious phone calls again.
And yes, there are some sexual scenes too, plus references to certain body parts and/or sexual acts. All of which don’t bother me at all, it’s part of this storyline and as such functional. Frankly, they often make me laugh, because of the humor with which it was clearly written. For context: I’m a Gen-X woman who loves sci-fi and fantasy.
Five stars for narration (I listened to the Audible audiobook version), the narrator delivers some great voice acting. He differentiates between characters, not only with different accents, but also by changing tone and timbre of his voice. He also added some sound effects that add a lot to the story, very well done.
I like this series so much that each time I finish a book, I immediately want to continue on to the next part in the series, and for the first time in years, it bothers me that I have only 1 measly credit left.
