Dubbed the “American Princess” after her rescue from months in the hands of ISIS, soldier and firefighter Penelope Turner has struggled silently since her return to Texas. The media, the danger of her job, the pressure of knowing lives are in her hands…all of it and more has combined to slowly fill Penelope with seething guilt and doubt. Missing memories from her moment of capture cause even more angst. Is she responsible for the deaths of her Army patrol unit? And without knowing what happened, how can she be trusted by her fellow firefighters—or trust them in return?

Worse…how can she ever be worthy of the man who believes in her most?

It took seeing Penelope in the hands of terrorists—in viral videos seen around the world—for Tucker “Moose” Jacobs to realize just how much he loved his fellow firefighter. He died waiting for her rescue, then died all over again when Penelope abruptly left Texas, trying to outrun her past. Now that she’s returned, the kid gloves are off. Moose is a patient man, but even he has his limits. He loves Penelope, and he knows it’s past time for her to face her fears, and remember she has an entire tribe of friends who not only have her back, but need Pen to have theirs, as well.

In the end, Penelope will have to trust Moose, her friends, and most of all herself, if she’s going to make peace with her past…and have any kind of future.

** Shelter for Penelope is the 15th and final book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings. Penelope’s story started in Protecting the Future, and over the years, she’s struggled with her inner demons. Read on to see her finally get her HEA.

When I think of some of my best and worst bittersweet moments in life, they’re most often the same events. My daughter’s high school graduation. My son’s two operations. My parents moving across country. The death of my aged grandfather. They were bittersweet because the significant rites of passage, the anticipation of future life experiences, or maybe just the expectations of maintaining the status quo. I find as I get older, my list of bittersweet moments gets longer. Its a happy-tears list. And now I can put ‘Shelter for Penelope’, the final Badge of Honor book, by Susan Stoker on my list of bittersweet moments. I’m not heartbroken by the end; I’m fortunate to have been swept up in the series. Bittersweet.

If you’ve read any of the BOH (Badge of Honor) books, Penelope is in there. And if you’ve read the Delta Force or SEAL of Protection books, Penelope is in there too. She’s a constant reoccurring character. Susan Stoker gave pieces of Penelope in all those, but never the whole. ‘Shelter for Penelope’ is really the culmination of those before mentioned series, IMHO. She’s the final most, bittersweet ending of the series. And therein lies the heart of Penelope. She’s so interwoven into the foundation and framework of all 3 book series. Her book has been anticipated and salivated over since her introduction in ‘Protecting the Future’. And it’s everything you expect from a Susan Stoker book. It’s funny, angsty, sweet and sexy. So let’s talk about the Moose in the room...

Honestly, you couldn’t dream of a better, more steadfastly loyal, loving leading character than ‘Moose’. I’m not going to talk about his physical character—geez, go read the book. I’m more interested in his heart. He is unwavering and unyielding. And he doesn’t give one flying fig. (Luckily he’s got the physicality to intimidate). He’s the embodiment of that “if you love something, let go...” saying. He will sacrifice himself with a smile. A bittersweet smile, but smile all the same. And he is the perfect match to Penelope’s bruised and battered psyche. They appear polar opposites: Moose is big and outwardly opposing. Penelope is small and fragile looking. They are two sides of the same coin. Moose is the anchor in Penelope’s internal storm. He has the strength to steady her, but also the strength to pull her ‘out of her head’. I hope everybody has their own Moose in their lives.

It is my opinion that Penelope’s much anticipated book is a gentle reminder, a loving push, and an earnest nudge from the author to take heart: to be kind (to yourself and others), don’t feel stupid for loving (yourself and others), let the past stay in the past (for yourself and others), and move into the future happy and healthy (for yourself and others).

It might be bittersweet, but it’s sure to give you the most happiness in life...and reading. ❤️

You've been invited over to your friend's house many times for dinner. It's always a fun time. The food is always rich and filling. The people you get to meet are always unique. You've never been disappointed by accepting the invitation. But every time you're always too full to go for the GRAND DESERT. That pièce de résistance. It's been tempting you. Teasing you. So this time, you promise yourself you're going to do something out of the ordinary. You're going to eat dessert FIRST.

Shelter for Penelope is Susan Stoker's pièce de résistance. It's the culmination of not only her Badge of Honor (BOH) series but we get to go back and visit with her Delta Force and Seal of Protection families. The BEST part of the dinner. So let me tell you about this dessert...it's not typical. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's rich and decadent and oh so yummy but it's also a bit tart. Some bites might make you pucker or even tear up. But then you get that spoonful of silky goodness and all is right with the world again.

But always with dessert comes the sad realization that dinner is coming to an end. You're going to have to leave and go back to "reality". Yep, it's all gone. But I have a secret. Well, it's not really a secret. This particular "friend" has dinner parties ALL THE TIME. The guest list might be different but let me tell you the food will be killer and you'll always have the BEST time.

So if you haven't figured it out yet I absolutely ADORED Shelter for Penelope. It was everything I was waiting for and more. It was emotional and fulfilling. The end of the road but not the journey. So don't despair...your invitation to the next party is coming. Don't forget to RSVP. You're not going to miss what's coming next...

All I can say is wow this final story in the Badge of Honor series was a perfect ending to this wonderful series. I have been looking forward to Pen and Moose’s story forever and Susan didn’t disappoint. This book was highly emotional as we read about two strong people trying to find a way to becoming a forever couple. I loved Moose , he is strong, loving and patient with Penelope while she works through her issues from being captive in Turkey. In writing Penelope, Susan has written a woman fighting her demons and struggling to find her place in a world she no longer feels comfortable in . While going through this journey with Penelope and Moose I cried for them both ( I lost count on how many times I cried reading this book) . Thank you Susan for this story, it was worth waiting for and an awesome emotional read.

Fight Like A Girl! Wow. Penelope’s story has been a long time in the making. I was a little concerned how Susan would handle the story given the emotional build up since Penelope was rescued and how she has dealt with the fallout from her captivity. What I can say - Susan never fails to deliver. This story really did justice to the journey it took for Penelope to find her happily ever after. I loved how she discovers herself through by learning to see herself as others see her and accept just how much she has to offer those that are in her life and that love her. Also I just want to point out how amazingly Susan handles these real life issues like PTSD with care and respect. 5 stars for Penelope and home run for Susan. I’m inspired to fight like a girl and never give up!

Well worth the wait!

I've been looking forward to reading Penelope and Moose's story for years and am happy they get their HEA. More I appreciate Pen's struggles with the after effects of her captivity and the author for skipping the quick and easy fixes. One thing this book can be read independently of any other book but since it touches on many other events it would be better appreciated after reading the others, especially Protecting the Future.

Overall Amanda rating: A+++

After seeing these two characters from the very beginning book in this series, as well as other series' that the author has written, I have to say that this book was worth the wait.
Lets get in it!
Characters:
Penelope- I honestly wish that she would have not of taken so long to overcome all the different trauma that she has endured. I love her strength, her love, her caring heart, all of her. She is struggling and getting worse and worse, but helps Beth as much as possible. She has absolutely been through it. Months of being captive by ISIS, thinking every day she may be killed, traumatized,... etc.
Months after being rescued, she has PTSD and it is getting so bad she is failing her job, friends and family. So she runs. Just her and her Donkey. (Read the book, yes I said Donkey.)

Tucker (Moose)- This man y 'all. This man has loved Pen for nearly ever. He has tried to be whatever she needs at the time, friend, listening ear, co-worker, brother in arms... He LOVES her. So when she leaves and runs from everything, he is done... Done with hiding his feeling, tiptoeing around her moods, and just breaks down and tells her. "I love you, I am here for you, let me know if you are ever coming home or not. Not that I would move on, I love you so much I would rather die single than move on, but I LOVE you. He is patient, caring, and trustworthy. Will she trust him??

Throughout this book the climax/action scenes are there, but not the center of the story as in some books. In this book the plot is mostly Pen trying to overcome her demons, and us readers are cheering her on every step of the way.

The secondary characters were also just as well written as before. I feel like I am part of this fiction world, and I never want to leave.

The plot, the smutty scenes, the climax, the characters... I am so glad that I read this book!!

Wow! Shelter for Penelope was phenomenal! I’d been eagerly anticipating the release of this book, and it totally blew me away.

Moose has loved Pen for years, and she loved him also, but kept him at arms length as a friend and leaned on Smokey, what she calls her service donkey! She not only hasn’t come to terms with what happened in Turkey before she was rescued while serving in the Army, but her PTSD is getting worse and she has run from San Antonio and is traipsing around the country (fortunately Tex know where. - as always!) only calling Moose occasionally. Until she finally goes home. You do get to see some old friends, which is fun also, that try to give advise to Pen.

This is a run, don’t walk, to click “buy me” button. Now if you will excuse me, I need to read it again, but need to get a new box of tissues first.

5 stars for Shelter for Penelope by Susan Stoker

This book was so anticipated and it did not disappoint. Love this series. Moose and Penelope together totally rock. Loved reading about post partum depression. The survivor's guilt was so thoughtfully written. Just overall well written. Loved reading about where everyone was in their lives. Could not put it down. Loved how both the seals and deltas helped Tiger. And of course reading that Tex was also a big part in her recovery. Tissues are a must when reading. Can't wait for to read what Ms Stoker has in mind for us.

This book has been a long time coming, pretty much since Penelope was rescued, although it's only been as her firefighter teammates found their loves that we have seen Penelope start to spiral. In each book Penelope was starting to loose it just a little bit more, until the last book with Taco and Koren when things came to a head.

I hated that Penelope ran away, yet it was something she needed to do. On her travels she finally figures out that everyone has issues and she needed to go home to face hers. Sure Moose's call helped her, but it was also time. When Penelope came home I thought things would be better...and they were for a bit. Then it got worse and once again Moose was there to put some hard truths on the line for Penelope, making her see that she isn't the only one having a rough time, that all of the people in her circle were fighting their own battles, she just didn't see them.

The last bit was what Penelope needed to go to the next step of healing for her...facing her past. The appointment with the hypnotist therapist was brutal, but once and for all Penelope learned what happened when she was taken hostage.

What I loved about the rest of the book was how everyone that knew Penelope were there for her, letting her break down, letting her be, letting her heal, this went a long way to let Penelope know they still loved her and what happened didn't change how they felt about her.

My favorite part of the whole book was the last letter. I loved who it was sent to, loved the new relationship that was forged and loved learning that Penelope found happiness in her life in so many ways.

My whole soul waited for this book. I had to read it a second time, just to make sure I got read it right the first time. Pen is my soul sister, best friend, and all around amazing.

I love all of Susan's books, some more than others, but only because those characters speak to me more. This is one of those books. Pen and Moose's story has heart, love, pain, healing and forgiveness. It touches on subjects that many people try to avoid or cover-up, PTSD, anxiety, mental health and equality.

Pen is a tough cookie, but not because she fights, but because she lets others help her, because she knows she needs help and has the support she NEEDS to get through this horrible situation. She has family, friends and Moose.

After a trip with Smokey, her beloved donkey, Pen is home, but still running from her demons. With the help of her loved ones, Pen makes progress and starts to really live life again.

Forgiveness and trust are key to everything, and when Pen learns this, her mind and heart open.

This book has it all, but be warned you will ugly cry, you will sob, you will -like me- need to read it again, because your tears will make everything blurry. You're heart will break, then mend again, it will feed your soul, and make life better for it.

I recommend this book, an the entire collection of Susan Stoker to anyone who has not read her.

How can one write a review and not give the plot away, almost impossible, but I will do my best. Susan Stoker did wonders with this story and with the characters.
We all know by now that soldier and firefighter Penelope Turner is not having an easy time. We also know what she has gone through and honestly even though this is a character, what she went through makes my heart ache, not just for her, but for all those that end up in the hands of terrorists.
As time passes Pen is having a harder time in dealing with all of this, despite all the ones around her that love her, we also know from the last book that Pen unable to deal with this all, just took off in the hopes to help her self and even get away from the pain she suffered.
Ok so far so good, have managed not to reveal the plot and what happens to Pen, Moose and the gang.
Will say this much, have your tissues read and not just a few, the story will have you bawling your eyes out, and then will have you laughing or giggling a few pages later.
The Author captured the pain and joy of her trip and all else that happens to her.
If you want to find out what happens, read the book, the story and the characters will grab you and pull you in where you will feel like one of them.

I just don't know where to begin with this. I, like many others, had been anticipating this book for a long time...from the moment Penelope was first introduced many, many books ago. I worried that the anticipation would lead to a let down but I'm happy to say that is not the case at all. Susan Stoker really did a great job in tying past characters into the book while at the same time telling Pen and Moose's story.

I'd be crying one moment and laughing the next. I definitely put off work (I have a flexible schedule thankfully) just to read the book. Once I started I had a hard time putting it down.

WOW!!! I can't think of any other way to end a series

I am so happy to have found your books. As sad as I am that this series has ended I am awed by how powerful you made it. All your books are that way. My family looks at me like I am a lunatic sometimes since one minute I am laughing hysterically out loud and then a few minutes later have tears streaming down my face. As long as you keep writing you can guarantee I will keep reading. I look forward to rereading them AGAIN & AGAIN. Thank you for sharing!!!!

Great Ending

Love this series and yes hated to see it end but you did it with such style and love. Moose and The American Princess - what a love store; this book brings all the teams together for such fun and even some tears. Pen has so much to deal with after her rescue but Moose it there through it all as is every one else. Great to see all the guys and their ladies. A must read to complete the series but have the tissue ready..

Pick up a box of tissues. Susan Stoker's Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series ends on a high note and with impactful emotion!

Penelope Turner is one brave, tough woman. But sometimes events can bend even the toughest. Notice I said "bend" and not "break." Penelope is on the verge of breaking due to her PTSD. (She was a member of the National Guard sent to Turkey on a Peacekeeping mission when her patrol was attacked by ISIS terrorists in the refugee camp they were patrolling. Her fellow soldiers were brutally murdered and Penelope was held captive in horrible conditions for months before being rescued.) Penelope is a firefighter but her PTSD has started to hamper her ability to do her job so she takes off with her support donkey, Smokey to "find herself." She leaves behind the man who loves her and has always had her back, fellow firefighter, Tucker "Moose" Jackson and all her loving, supportive coworkers, friends and family. She finds her way back home but has she "found herself" or is she still lost?

Shelter for Penelope by Susan Stoker is the fifteenth and last book in her Badge of Honor series. I am very sad to see this series end. It has been filled with poignant subjects, great triumphs, brave, independent heroines and heroes and the First Responders who fall in love with them. Each story has been an emotional journey through tough times to a happily ever after that was touching and very satisfying. This has been exemplified in Penelope and Moose's book. Moose is the epitome of a loving, supportive man who would do anything for Penelope. Penelope bravely fights through her PTSD issues and comes to a place where she can more easily deal with her PTSD thanks to some therapy and most especially Moose and all her other "always there for her" friends and family. This story made me cry, but it made me laugh and feel good too. Thankfully Susan Stoker has assured her readers that we will see glimpses of our favorite Badge of Honors characters in the future. Thank you, Susan Stoker, for that. I realize that this series has a lot of books involved but I recommend the whole series. The first book in the series, Justice for Mackenzie is free on Amazon.

The long awaited Shelter for Penelope dropped in my kindle this morning and I just couldn't wait to start it, then as with every other Susan Stoker book I couldn't put it down except to grab a box of tissues, damn this woman can write awesome drama, gripping stories and emotional scenes that you just never forget and I'll never forget all of the awesomely amazing character's either.

We have watched Penelope and Moose for what seems like forever wondering if they would ever get together, could Penelope ever work through her PTSD and not not just get over it because PTSD is not something you ever get over but you can learn to live with it and move forward I honestly wasn't sure Penelope would ever do that even after she found Smokey and with everything Moose has always done for her I had my doubts she would pull through this I kept worrying she would break Moose's heart but in true Susan Stoker fashion there was an magical HEA at the end of this amazing book and I have to say not only do I admire Moose's unconditional love and devotion for Penelope but all of those in her tribe who always have her back, this story was truly heartwarming.

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

The final Badge Of Honor book, Penelope's story, is a DOOZY! Fierce, intense, will-put-your-emotions-through-the-wringer, all consuming romance like I have NEVER read before!

Penelope was a hell of a read. Penelope sure has been through some really tough stuff but instead of it making her seem weaker, I think it made her look stronger. She tries incredibly hard to work through everything and with the help of Moose and her friends, I think she finally comes out on top which sure has been a long time coming in my opinion. This particular romance has SO MANY FEELS along with mind blowing suspense and a plot that will have you reaching for those tissues. Moose and Penelope's romance still turned out to be awe-inspiring. Moose is strong, determined to help Penelope with her troubles and such all around stunning alpha male I couldn't help but to melt when it comes to this hero.

Shelter For Penelope gets a WORLD CLASS FIVE CONSUMING STARS!

I bought an advance copy of this book at ROR and couldn’t wait to read it. The story is about Penelope after she has been home for a while from being a POW. She is suffering from PTSD and trying to heal herself alone. She soon finds out that it takes a tribe to recover when you’ve lost yourself.
This book gives you so many feels. You are so heartbroken for Pen and Moose. You get to catch up with all your old friends from Susan’s other series. It is a beautiful wrap up to her “Shelter” series. I never thought anything would replace my love for Caroline and Wolf’s book as my fave, but Susan did it again.
I highly recommend that you read all of the Delta Force and Seals of Protection series as you will be seeing those characters in this book. That will heighten your enjoyment. Nothing but love for this book. Go get it!!!

The time has come for the final book in Ms. Stoker’s Badge is Honor Series, and one of the most highly anticipated as well. Penelope and Moose’s story is so you could want and more. The path to happiness and acceptance is never easy. Penelope is attempting to overcome her traumatic life experiences, while struggling with relying on those who love her to help. This story will bring tears of sadness and joy to your eyes, while also bringing plenty of heat and humor we expect from the series. I will not give away any details, but I will say this story was all it needed to be and so much more

I loved everything about this story! This was the best ending ever that could have been written for the badge of honor series! Watching Penelope deal with her PTSD was an eye opener to this disorder and seeing how her friends rallied around her was so amazing. I want to remember to always fight like a girl! Also, I now want a pet donkey. Thanks Susan.

All I can say is Susan Stoked did The Badge of Honor Series justice (pun intended), and it absolute went out in a BLAZE of glory with this final book. Pen and Moose's story has been a long time coming. Their connection is so great that their love has been shared by not only the members of this series by Susan, but by members from 2 of her other series. I don't think words will do their story justice. If you are looking for a love story that stands the test of time look no further. Better yet, start by reading how Penelope "Tiger" Turner was rescued. Enjoy!

I have waited along time for this book, and it was so worth the wait. It made me laugh and cry. It gave me those answers about Penelope's past, and why she fought to accept Moose's love.
Sad to see the series end, but I have a feeling I will see them(cameos) again in other books.

Penelope Turner, who the press call the American Princess and others call Tiger, is struggling. She has been struggling since she was POW in Turkey. She struggles to remember, with guilt, whether she should continue to be a firefighter, who to trust and whether she can trust herself. It seems to be getting worse and not better. Tucker ”Moose” Jacobs is also struggling with his emotions, on letting Penelope deal with her demons independently, when to administer a push, when to tell her what he feels for her, or when to take hold of her in his arms and not let her go. In this wonderfully rich and compelling book, we see Penelope struggle with her demons and the feelings Moose stirs in her. We see an alpha, Moose, struggle of when to let go and when to push.
In this stand-alone conclusion to the Badge of Honor Texas Heroes Series, Susan Stoker weaves a wonderful romance with two people who have taken a long road to be together. The story is compelling, emotional and rich. Even though you can read it stand alone, it would be my advice to read the Badge of Honor series and Protecting the Future to see this entire story unfold.
On one last note, in this book Susan Stoker takes the insult “Fight Like a Girl” and turns it into a battle cry used by both men and women alike. It is a clever addition to the story. I definitely give this one 5+ stars.

Author Susan Stoker once again knows how to end a series; this time it’s the highly anticipated story of Penelope and Moose in Shelter For Penelope and what an emotional story it was. We first met Penelope at the end of the Seal of Protection series and throughout the Badge of Honor books where we saw Penelope struggling with PTSD. The storytelling was fantastic with so much raw emotions that just pulls at your heartstrings. I loved seeing all the support for Penelope and we all need someone like Moose who really showed the depth of his love for her. She really showed her strength, courage and fought her way back....Fight Like a Girl!!! Man, this rocked me to my core. I loved everything about this book and I cannot wait to re-read it over and over again.

I don’t even know how to start

This long anticipated book was so well worth the wait! We were intrigued if not a little in love with the “American Princess” at the very beginning of this series. We admired “Tiger” throughout the series. After reading this book, I realized that the best part of the story was Penelope, herself!

Moose was the type of man every woman needs. He’s got his faults, but his unwavering love and devotion to Penelope made me smile and my heart yearn for someone like Moose.

As always, Smokey the donkey was the perfect addition to Penelope’s story. He continuously made me smile and laugh.

Smokey’s undying love and devotion was perfect. He was like Moose in that essence, but his dependence on Penelope was the perfect image of Penelope’s final story.

I loved finally knowing what happened to her as a POW and I fell in love with her late teammate Henry White. His tag line of “Fight Like A Girl” should be the motto for every single heroine in Susan Stokers books! These women find a way to claw their way out and fight like a girl! I love it!

Exceptionally and emotional!! Penelope and Tucker story is the soul burning love story of your dreams. “Shelter for Penelope” is beyond fabulous! I’ve been a fan of Susan Stoker for years, but I have to say this series has taken my appreciation to a whole new level and I’m only sad that it has come to end but still smiling. I connected with Penelope really strongly and saw some of her struggles close to home with losing the person you use to be and really help me loads. This has to be my number 1 MUST READ/BEST book of the whole of 2019 out of all the books I’ve read this year. This book will stay with me for ever! Definitely reading this whole series and other linked to it again and again!! This book, series should be on your reading list and in your favourite library too so what are you waiting for? Go grab your copy today and get reading!! Happy reading everyone!!
