Lords and Ladies in Love #5

Captivating the Earl

Rate this book

Lady Elizabeth is hiding in plain sight...and very plain dresses. To escape her traitorous father's reputation, she's left behind the glittering balls of London Society to act as a governess. For the first time in her life, she’s independent and taking care of herself. All is fine...until the irresistible Lord Hawkins arrives at her employer's house.

Lord Hawkins is a rake of the highest order, but something about the beautiful governess working for his cousin makes him want to act like a gentleman. After an attempt on her life, Hawk discovers who Elizabeth really is. Now under orders from the Home Office to bring her in, Hawk vows instead to protect her. Even though he’s not entirely sure she’s innocent, she is his responsibility. If only he could stop wanting her.

Hawk may be handsome and honorable, but no matter how much Lizzie wants to give in to her desires, falling for the tempting man will surely bring heartbreak. Especially when he proposes the only way to keep her safe is to marry her. She doesn't want his name if he’s only doing it out of a sense of duty. But someone in the Home Office wants Lizzie dead and it’s up to Hawk to convince her of the danger when even becoming his countess may not save her life.

Hi Romance Fans,

My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.

I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.

Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com

Hiding in plain sight!

The daughter of a traitor has reinvented herself as a governess. Having fled from her place in high society to the country, away from from prying, critical eyes Lady Elixabeth thought she was safe. When her employer's friend the arresting Lord Hawkins comes to visit, Lady Elizabeth finds not only her secrets exposed but her heart.
When Hawk realizes who Elizabeth is, he has orders from the Home Office to bring her in. He searches for a way to keep her safe. His answer is not necessarily what Elizabeth wants.
Somehow the two must chart a course that keeps Elizabeth safe, but what of her heart that has been already taken by Hawk? ... and Hawk's feelings?
An enjoyable continuation of tonnish matters of the heart with a twist!

Lord Hawkins is dissatisfied with his indulgent lifestyle. He’s been drinking and bedding women because he feels guilty about his role in his sister’s death. He is also occasionally an agent of the Home Office. Lizzie is a governess who works for Hawk’s cousin and is actually Lady Elizabeth who is in hiding. Lizzie’s father was a traitor who was captured and killed by Home Office agentis two years ago; Hawk was involved in the operation. What a coincidence when Hawk decides to visit his cousin, falls in lusts with Lizzie (and since he’s handsome, the feeling is mutual) and then when he discovers who she really is, receives orders to bring Lizzie back to London for questioning.

There was nothing about Hawk (including his name) that was appealing. Although Lizzie can be admired for being a good governess for the ideal family, she too isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. Nothing new about the dialogue, the espionage storyline was blah, the romance and sex were formulaic.

I received an advance copy for an honest review thanks to Netgalley.

For two years Lady Elizabeth Monroe has successfully embarked on a new life as a governess. Knowing her father was guilty of treason and she could likely end up in Newgate for it as well, her only recourse was to stay hidden.

Lord Hawkins comes to stay with a close friend's family and cannot keep his eyes off their lovely but secretive governess. After getting closer, Hawk discovers who the woman he is falling for really is. After an attempt on her life, Hawk will do whatever is necessary to protect Lizzie but will his protectiveness become too much for the independent Lizzie?

This story was just ok but could have been better with a few loose ends tightened up. Did Hawk remember their dance from years before? Was there more to the backstory of the help provided by Lady Franklin? Also, more time details and reasoning given behind the villains motives seemed in order.

Captivating the Earl is book five in the Lords & Ladies in Love series by Callie Hutton. This was a wonderful romantic romp with lots of action and adventure. I couldn’t put the book down. Miss Lizzie Moore is a governess that Richard, The Earl of Hawkins finds himself captivated by. Little does he know that Miss Moore has a secret that will plunge him into a deadly game of life and death. Fantastic story! I hope Hutton has more in this series.

Very Very Very Good Story!

I enjoyed this book and series very much. I absolutely loved the characters and storyline so much. Lizzie and Hawk had a bond from the moment they laid eyes on each other. But one thing in the beginning said she had blonde hair and that’s not the depiction on the cover. I am a cover person. I look at book covers because it is like the insight of that story. Oh well! On to the Marriage Mart stories that I haven’t read. Naturally I read the Scottish ones so now I’ll go back and read those that were English. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜😊😊😊😊😊

But someone in the Home Office wants Lizzie dead and it’s up to Hawk to convince her of the danger when even becoming his countess may not save her life.

My Thoughts:

This book could quickly become one of my favorites by this author and I have read a few. I actually read this book in one sitting and could not put it down.
I loved the characters and recognized the back story from a previous book in this series.
The fact that Lizzie has been in hiding for two years right under the noses of those searching her out is remarkable.
Two years ago she could not convince the Home Office that she knew nothing of her father's treachery. How will she escape punishment for something she had no part in now?
Hawk is a rake and wants no part of marriage or children until he meets Lizzie. Now all he can think of is her in his bed. Unlike his previous paramours it doesn't stop there. He wants her forever even though he senses there is something not quite right with her story. He swiftly finds out who she is but that doesn't curtail his interest in her.
I gave this book 4.75 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a mild sensual rating of 2.5 of 5.0 flames. There is only one encounter before this couple marries and little to speak of in the way of intimacy in most of this book.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

This is the fifth book in the series & whilst it’s easily read as a stand alone book it does feature characters from earlier books. Lizzie is the daughter of the Earl of Loverly & this book finally solves the case of the traitors which began in Denying the Duke. This is another well written page turning read. The characters are well fleshed & I love it when a rake falls in love & Hawk is no exception. Lizzie is a strong character who has survived her father's treasonous acts & managed to forge a life for herself. The pace of the book is very good, it was entertaining, intriguing & the chemistry between Hawk & Lizzie was so apparent from the start. I hope Lord Campbell has his story as there was a definite hint about it at the end.

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

It's a shame because I was captivated and on the verge of giving it 4-stars until Chapter 31. I find it lacking, I feel that the author could still write some more and explain the motive of the real culprit. In addition, there were some logic that I find so daft. For example:

- Chapter 4: Lizzie wanted no part of London Society even if that meant she would never have a husband, children, and a home of her own, then so be it.

She could still get married and have children without going back to London Society. She just needs to settle for a middle class man or a vicar or a soldier or any male species that is not part of the ton.

- Chapter 6: Claiming suffering a megrim and not going to the village with Hawkins is not cowardice. There's nothing wrong in being cautious especially her own safety relied on maintaining secrecy.

- Chapter 30: If Hawk had the time to pace the floor and imagine all sorts of danger that his wife might encounter, why not make a good use of that one hour to search for his wife?

Lastly, I know this is an insignificant detail but I'm the type who really notice many things that a lot of people do not. The book describes the female protagonist as a blonde but the model on the cover has dark hair.

All in all, I don't find this story disappointing even if it is the same old kind of male protagonist; living the life of a typical bachelor---wrenching, gambling and drinking---who lately finds in unappealing. If you're the kinde of individual who let go of everything easily and just let it be, you might love this novel.

Lord Richard Hawkins, "Hawk" to his friends, bored with his rakish entertainments and a bit disgusted with his own behavior, leaves London for a visit with his cousin, the Earl of Wycliff, and his family in the country. There he encounters Lizzie, governess to Wycliff's four children. Lizzie is hiding out in the country hoping not to be recognized for the former debutante that she is, or associated with her on-the-run father. As Lizzie and Hawk spend more time together he begins to suspect that she is more than she claims to be. After a riding accident that injures Lizzie, Hawk becomes even more suspicious, and also concerned for Lizzie's safety, especially given the growing attraction he feels for her. After spending time working for the Home Office, Hawk is inclined to be suspicious of most everything and is convinced that accident was no accident at all and Lizzie is not whom she claims to be. Hawk must decide whether to follow his orders from the Home Office and bring Lizzie in for questioning or listen to his own heart's determination to keep her safe no matter what.

This was a quick, enjoyable read with good romance, some steam, and a bit of intrigue and action. The ending felt a bit rushed, but I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it.

3.5 ⭐️

The story had a promising start, I was curious to learn more about Hawk and thought it was a fun twist to have the daughter of a traitor as the FMC. The start of the story pulled me in right away. However, around the middle, the plot began to lose momentum, and I found it less engaging. The end felt somewhat vague and rushed, leaving me wanting a bit more depth and resolution. It wasn’t a bad book by any means, but it also didn’t quite deliver on the potential it showed in the beginning.

Summary;

(Spoilers)

Lady Elizabeth is the daughter of Lord Loverly. Her father, branded a traitor to his country, has long been pursued by the War Department. Yet Elizabeth remembers him as a caring and gentle man. Before his escape, he confessed to his crimes, driven by financial desperation. The scandal was so immense that Elizabeth could no longer show her face in polite society.

With help, she secured a position as a governess in the household of Lord and Lady Wycliff, and has worked there for two years. Recently, her employers received a visit from Lord Hawkins, a handsome aristocrat with whom Elizabeth had once danced at a ball, and to her relief, he didn’t recognize her. She fervently hoped he never would.

During dinner the night Lord Hawkins arrived, Lord Wycliff abruptly inquired about Lord Loverly, only for Hawkins to reveal that Loverly had been killed by the Duke of Bedford. Elizabeth’s heart dropped.

Lord Hawkins is rakish to a fault: he’s had countless trysts and women throw themselves at him, though lately none have truly satisfied him. Seeking distraction, he leaves London and ventures to his cousin, Lord Wycliff’s country estate, where he meets the breathtaking Lizzie, the children’s governess. The Wycliffs speak highly of her, she’s excellent with the children, skilled at her job, and pleasant company.

Hawkins instantly finds Lizzie not only attractive but intellectually compelling, especially for a vicar’s daughter. She possesses the refinement and talents of a well-educated lady. He can’t resist her, and seeks her company at every opportunity. One afternoon during a ride, Lizzie falls from her horse and is knocked unconscious. Hawkins inspects her saddle and discovers a cut strap. He alerts Lord Wycliff, who can’t fathom that any stable boy would do such a thing, but after questioning the stable master, who insists he hasn’t recently hired anyone untrustworthy, Hawkins grows uneasy.

As Hawkins spends more time with Lizzie, he notices how much she resembles a lady of high society, not only in her conversation and bearing, but in the occasional slip of phrasing, such as when she called herself “a lady”. When he asks about her past employment, she says this is her first job as a governess and that she was previously a companion. Hawkins harbors doubts, yet Lizzie evokes feelings he’s never experienced before. They share a kiss, and he can’t get enough of her.

One evening, while dining with Lord Wycliff and Hawkins, a letter arrives for Hawkins. He turns pale and locks eyes with Lizzie, who panics immediately. The missive states that Lord Loverly’s accomplice is almost certainly his daughter, Lady Elizabeth, currently serving the Wycliffs, and that she’s to be fetched for questioning. Everything falls into place, and Hawkins feels deeply betrayed. He confronts Lizzie, who turns deathly pale. To his surprise, Lord Wycliff remains composed. Lizzie confesses, explaining why she lied: she swears she is in no way complicit in her father’s treachery or disappearance, and only learned of his betrayal the evening he fled to America. Hawkins decides first to determine whether she’s telling the truth, suspecting that the real accomplice may be someone within the War Department.

That night Lizzie flees, but doesn’t get far. When Hawkins discovers her absence, he rushes after her and finds her holed up in an inn. He tells her they are man and wife, and they spend the night together in her room. On the way back to his estate, two nights later, Lizzie is attacked in her sleep, but Hawkins, in the next room, hears her cries and springs to her rescue. Now convinced the culprit is someone inside the War Department, he resolves to uncover the truth, and keep Lizzie safe.

His attraction deepens to the point where, a few nights later, he sneaks into her bed, falling asleep wrapped tightly around her. Lizzie wakes but doesn’t ask him to stop when he touches her. With the potential prison sentence looming if she’s found guilty, or lifelong spinsterhood, even if cleared, she decides to embrace this one chance at real passion.

They arrive at Hawkins’s estate, where Lizzie meets his mother and sister, and to her astonishment, they fully accept her. Hawkins is smitten, and now that his family approves too, he proposes. Initially, she declines, fearing his motives, but he persuades her to marry. They travel to London to visit Hawkins’s friend, the Marquess of Campbell, who helps them with their marriage. A few days later, they are wed. Life settles into a calm phase as Hawkins continues his investigation to unmask whoever is targeting his wife.

Growing impatient, Lizzie resolves to take matters into her own hands. She wants to go to the War Office and clear her name. Furious, Hawkins forbids it, he lost his sister because he failed to protect her, and he refuses to let history repeat itself. He tells Lizzie he married her purely to keep her safe. She’s shocked, she entered the marriage out of love and believed the same was true for him. Feeling betrayed, they don’t speak for days, and Lizzie retreats to a separate room.

Undeterred, Lizzie proceeds with her plan and arranges a meeting with someone at the Home Secretary’s office. It quickly becomes apparent that the man she’s meeting is not there to help her, in fact, he’s the very accomplice who worked with her father and now wants her dead. He grabs her and drags her toward a waiting carriage… until Hawkins bursts in, having seen Lizzie’s correspondence with the Home Secretary and followed her. They manage to escape, and Hawkins realizes how deep he loves his wife. Lizzie is safe, and they return home together.

Some time later, Lizzie resumes attending social gatherings, nervous, but to her surprise, she is well received. Rumors fade, and her status as Lady Hawkins becomes well established.

To say I was captivated by this story puts it lightly!! Hiding away as a governess for two years, Lizzi has felt safe from the authorities looking for her. Unfortunately, Hawk, Lord Hawkins shows up to spend time with his friends, her employers. What now!! An Earl with good looks and roguish ways, is not good for her libido, and keeping up her charade! But what's a girl to do once he gets a missive to bring her in and realizes who she is? Is she a criminal hiding or an innocent lady whose father was a traitor? It seemed love at first sight between the two and Callie Hutton brings these characters alive to the point you can feel their emotions, although keeping you in suspense as to what will happen. Throw in attempts on Lizzie's life and a search for evidence that cannot be found while time is running out. Prepare to be delighted with this fast paced story that will have you sighing at the end. Cannot wait for the next one!!

Hawk comes to visit his friends and he knows there is something to this governess he feels like he knows her, which come to find out he does. I didn’t think I was going to like this book. I don’t like confrontations and suspenseGil stories Yeah I was surprised that the story continue the enemy throughout the series and I was pleasantly surprised and liked it! I’m going to look for the other story about Campbell who doesn’t appear to be in this “Lords and Ladies in Love” series for some reason, though the book prior to this one was about Mr. Templeton who isn’t even a Lord. Oh well.

Hawk is an earl running from duty and a marriage he never wanted. Lizzie is running from a past stained by her father’s execution for treason. When they meet, the connection is instant and impossible to deny.
But Lizzie is in danger, and someone wants her dead. As Hawk helps uncover who is hunting her—and why—their growing feelings are tested by secrets, fear, and the weight of their pasts.
An excellent story with a gripping mystery, heartfelt romance, and a tremendous author behind it.

An interesting plot with interesting characters. I like Hawk as a strong male character in this story. He has a lot to learn about marriage and how to interact with a wife. In this book there is the constant threat of danger lurking nearby. I like how their relationship develops over the time they spend together. An enjoyable read.

This is a fun, entertaining read. I enjoyed both the romance and the underlying mystery that ran through the series. The characters captured my attention from the start and held it until the very end. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into.

You pretty much get exactly what is outlined in this book’s synopsis, my English Regency book loving friends. So if that brief summary and genre itself are your cup of tea, then you’ll likely enjoy this very steamy at times, new release by Callie Hutton.

There is plenty of “my lord”, “my lady”, and other prim and proper English manners as these two longingly but warily start to dance around each other. That is until about the halfway point where it takes a decidedly graphic steamy turn. At least by then, this couple have spent time together and genuinely seem to like and are attracted to each other. A rather unusual turn of events for this rich, former playboy hero, who previously referred to marriage as a marital noose.

The hero, Lord Hawkins, is a wealthy, privileged, recovering from long term overindulging on wine, women, and card playing lord of the manor kind of guy when he first strolls into Lizzie’s life. He’s thinking he has finally seen the error of his ways though and now wants to be a better man.

Though portrayed as a good man who blames himself for not stepping in and stopping a preventable catastrophe from striking down someone who should have been saved, I still had a bone to pick with him. You see, I wasn’t a fan of the frequent references to his recent but now supposedly behind him “bedsport” ways with tons of The Ton’s willing women. Married or not, as long as they were beautiful and willing is all that mattered to him. I’m just not endeared to that type of mentality. I guess you could say my grudge against him resurfaced each and every time that was brought up. Lizzie being worried how she would measure up to the countless beauties he’s bedded was icky, as well. She should have been more worried about what diseases she might catch from him. Alas, she was as innocent as the day is long so that likely didn’t cross her mind.

Lizzie was very much your typical English, damsel in distress beauty but not wanting to be a burden on anyone type heroine. Born and raised a proper lady, she had the demeanor and education fit to be Hawk’s wife, but he had his hands full trying to keep her alive and out of another type of noose.

Having not read book 1, but rated books 2 and 3 four stars, this one fell into more of just an average romantic read for me. Though I loved his gentleness and protective streak towards LIzzie, the overall pace and flow of the storyline lowered my enthusiasm somewhat. I found myself fast forwarding through large sections of it later on. The obvious ending result if a story has not constantly held and completely captivated my full attention. The main reason I would recommend this romantic tale would be the hero being brought to his knees and senses by true love in the form of one Lady Elizabeth.

Book 1 - Seducing the Marquess
Book 2 - Marrying the Wrong Earl
Book 3 - Denying the Duke
Book 4 - Wagering for Miss Blake
Book 5 - Captivating the Earl

Title: Captivating the Earl, Series: Lords and Ladies in Love (Book 5), Author: Callie Hutton, Pages: 285, stand-alone, very steamy about midway through, former womanizing manho, virgin, damsel in distress heroine, no OW/OM drama, no love triangle, no cheating.

Just a lovely addition to this series. Hiding out as a governess and being found out by the very earl who is supposed to bring her in for questioning adds a new twist. Typical regency elements of character, plot, and steamy romance.

It is an absolutely amazing historical fiction novel. I loved everything about it, the story, the characters, the starting, and the ending. I think it's perfect in every way.
Lizzie has been hiding since her father disappeared. She fears that the ton would not accept daughter of a traitor and it seemed like the right thing to do. She has found a perfectly acceptable position as a governess and has been living comfortably... until Lord Hawkins arrives at his cousin's estate. She hopes that he doesn't recognize her but more importantly than that it seems that they both have a mutual attraction which cannot be ignored. She is a member of the staff and it is unseemly for Lord Hawkins to pay her so much attention. However, the real trouble starts when he receives a letter from the Home Office and suddenly it appears that Miss Lizzie's life is in grave danger.
Hawk cannot believe that Miss Lizzie is actually Lady Elizabeth, but something about her had intrigued him right from the moment he met her. Now it is up to him to keep her safe and he cannot trust anyone. Because there seems to be another traitor in their midst, one who wants her dead. They both flee and must uncover the truth before something really bad happens.
As the two spend more time together they begin to realize how much they love each other. If this ended well they might find something truly beautiful to cherish for the rest of their lives.
It's a must read a historical romance novel. I loved the story, it's well-written and has some amazing characters. I especially loved Lizzie and Hawk's characters. Their story was definitely worth reading for me.
