The Question Who is the Zodiac?Only one killer solves the riddle of the Zodiac. Theodore Kaczynski, dubbed the Unabomber, fills in the gaps of the Zodiac mystery to present the full picture of both criminal careers.Ted — had experience building bombs which he threatened to use on school children as the Zodiac, and that he subsequently used to kill his victims as the Unabomber— had a psychotic break at age 24, where he convinced himself that he was free of any moral or ethical standard that would prevent him from killing anyone he chose— was a professor at UC Berkeley as the Zodiac murders began, and had easy access to all of the murder sites and victims— was a prolific letter writer whose primary mode of communication was the written word, just like the Zodiac killer— was a genius-level mathematician who was fully capable of creating the Zodiac ciphers, as demonstrated by the codes found in his cabin after his capture in 1996— as the Zodiac, acted out his plan for gaining the attention of the public that he later presented in his Unabomber manifesto— possessed the type of weapons, disguises, and margin notes that would be expected of the Zodiac serial killerThe evidence is there. The answer is Ted Kaczynski.
The third book of the series about the Zodiac killer written by Mark Hewitt is the most disappointing. Read ‘Chapter 16 The Objections’ and you will understand why I hold this view. The objections to Theodore Kaczynski (the Unabomber) also being the Zodiac killer, highlighted in Hewitt’s own book, are stronger arguments against Hewitt’s confident assertion that he has revealed the real culprit. There are too many holes in his “evidence”. A significant proportion of the book is concerned with comparisons between the Unabomber’s manifesto and the Zodiac letters; quite frankly, the links appear forced rather than an easy fit and the language including single words (!) is universal; it is also repetitive and extremely tedious. Being the central point of Hewitt’s evidence, makes his case weak, in my view. There is also an alibi for the summer of 1969 which if true excludes the possibility of Ted being the Zodiac but Hewitt tries to bend this alibi to fit. He also argues that the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are not interested in linking Kaczynski with the Zodiac killings; I find this difficult to believe, if he was the Zodiac killer then I have no doubts he would have also been charged with those crimes. Yes, Kaczynski had a connection with North California but so do millions of others ! Nevertheless, what is interesting is that you get two serial killers for the price of one, both are discussed in this book. All three volumes can be read independently. The first is excellent and the second is almost as good, unfortunately, in my view, ‘The Zodiac Revealed’ is far from convincing.
