ZEB CARTER VERSUS THE YAKUZA

The world's intelligence agencies are under attack.

The first to be targeted is Avichai Levin, Director of Mossad. His daughter is brutally killed in New York, in broad daylight. The head of the French DGSE is similarly hit.

The Agency springs into action, with Zeb Carter leading the investigation.

A trail that pits him against a Vietnamese execution squad, a London biker hit-team, and takes him to Japan.

To the yakuza. The largest criminal gang in the world.

There, Zeb learns of the true motives behind the attacks. And of an upcoming one, that has horrifying ramifications for global peace.

Zeb Carter has to stop them and prevent the execution.

But no one has ever defeated the yakuza. Not in centuries.

I received Ty Patterson's Trigger Break for free. A number of readers had posted positive reviews so I figured it was worth a shot.

I figured wrong.

Trigger Break is billed as the 10th book in Mr. Patterson's "Warrior Series" featuring Zeb Carter and his small band of trusty sidekicks, consisting of some women for window dressing but mainly super-heroic men who are all seasoned Special Forces Black Ops veterans now working for a clandestine US government agency with a blank check to target and eliminate criminal and terror threats. As you might expect, Zeb and his crew are all weapons experts skilled in all the martial arts; no one can outshoot or outfight them; and they all practice what is euphemistically called enhanced interrogation. I would be surprised if any of them are registered Democrats.

But would you also believe they all just happen to be brilliant? In fact, two of the team's physical giants named Bear and Bwana are said to be members of Mensa, proving the proposition that you can't always judge a book by its cover. But Bwana in particular never says anything even remotely smart or clever (he uses phrases like "dang it") and at page 139 at the end of Chapter 18 he's shown to be ridiculously slow on the uptake. So maybe in his case you *can* judge that book by its cover.

Anyhoo, to launch this particular outing, Zeb gets a call from his distraught friend, Avichai Levin, no less the Director of Israel's famed Mossad, whose daughter has just been beheaded in midtown Manhattan. (Note to Mr. Patterson: Most Israelis would use the Levi form of the name, and the Hebrew name Avichai is too Jewish by half. But I digress.)

At the beginning of Trigger Break, the vaunted agents of the Mossad are set loose to settle the score on their own, but they had been warned by Zeb not to operate on American soil (even though they had done so before by assassinating an LA gang leader to no one's regret — except the gang leader's). Mr. Patterson doesn't burden his readers with the better point that the Mossad is for use by the government of Israel for state business, and not as a tool by its Director to avenge his daughter's death. So cue Zeb Carter and his intrepid band of invincible action figures to do just that. Besides, at the time of her murder, the victim was trying in vain to phone Zeb for help but he was too late to save her. So naturally he'll now drop everything to do whatever it takes to hunt those responsible for killing her. Because now it's personal.

Mr. Patterson has tapped into a crowded market with yet another Jack Reacher lookalike (though unlike Reacher, whose readers know even his mother doesn't call him Jack, Zeb is conveniently fluent in both Japanese and Hebrew). We all have to earn a living, and Mr. Patterson's is to entertain adolescent boys by keeping his sentences short and choppy, his plots simple, his action nonstop, his perspectives black or white, his heroes as violent as his villains and each of his chapters ending breathlessly.

Just don't delude yourself into thinking that this book isn't exactly the juvenile fantasy it is. I gave the writer of this garbage two stars for at least writing barely passable juvenile fantasy. And I must have discovered a part of me which never grew up, because in spite of myself I almost didn't hate it.

The operative word is "almost."

Warriors book # 10

Totally out of this world, unbelievable, and implausible but what a ride. I love this series but I do need to take time off between installments…ouf action packed a la Jason Bourne, Bruce Lee is put to shame with Zeb’s Kung Fu movements, he is a little much of a super hero but hey why not that is the fun of it. We do not have a dull moment all through, tension from beginning to end in a plot that is exciting with many twists and turns and one that pulls us in right from the start. Definitely this is my genre of story. What a page turner.

“Trigger Break” is mainly set in Japan with the Yakuza right in the middle. So you can imagine it is a challenge to remember names of the syndicates and even to place them but Mr. Patterson knows how to make us blend in with slick sleuthing spin and the Yakuza charms…. The martial arts description is outstanding: graphic and visual. The story also touches some feature of the Yakuza culture such as the tradition of severing the joint of the little finger, drugs-smuggling, human trafficking and arms smuggling, etc. everything is well blended to provide us with a captivating read…. well-done as always.

Mr. Patterson is a gifted storyteller with a wild imagination who is well versed in all branches he thrust his protagonist into. Zeb with his gang of trusted operatives entertain us in intriguing stories spanning international countries.

Zeb is unstoppable….love him.

Once again Zeb and his warriors take on an international crime syndicate. This time it's the Yakuza from Japan. First a woman's death across a phone then two more women are slain. Who is killing these high profile women and why ? Leave it up to Ty to bring us another thrilling page turner. These books are so full of action, conspiracy and mayhem that you are truly missing out if you aren't reading this Warrior series. Reminds me of the Jack Reacher series but with some help from Zeb's crew. I highly recommend it.

I was fortunate enough to read an advance copy of Patterson's latest Warrior series thriller.

As action thrillers go, Patterson writes them better than a lot of the authors I have read. He has that great ability to put the reader right into the scene, be it a fight or just walking down a street in Tokyo. Plenty of action which bring along its own problems. When there is this much action in a novel, there are a lot of leaps of faith for the reader. This one is no different. But it is a very enjoyable read.

Don't be put off by the Four Star rating. I very seldom give Five Stars to action thriller novels.

"The Agency" an Organization that does not exist, has 8 operatives and one administrator Clare, based in DC and who is in a position of complete Deniability about the Agency. Zeb Carter, who is reminiscent of Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan, Harry Bosch, Joe Pickett and Luke Stone (some of my favorite book heros) as far as single minded protection of the innocent and prosecution or persecution of the evil doers is the Lead agent. Bear, Bwana, Chloe, and Roger
And Zeb are all ex-special forces. Broker is the Intelligence analyst. And the Twins Beth and Meghan are ex cops who run the logistics and intelligence. They are the glue that keeps everything working.
This story involves two assassinations of daughters of two world wide intelligence leaders. The women are also members of an Organization that helps women worldwide. The assassins are untraceable, the evil leaders are untraceable. And the third attempt is foiled by Zeb and his group! This brings the Agency in and the story takes off!! The Assassinations are part of a world wide plot and the hunt is thrilling and exciting! You will enjoy this read and it's series sounds almost as good!! This is a very good read I think you will become hooked!!!

Enjoy this good Read!

Wow! Okay, so that is not very original. What is original is Trigger Break. Page one starts out with a phone call. Tame enough you say. However, there is a woman on the line. Someone Zeb doesn't know. She asks if it is him, then screams. The next sounds heard chill and anger the passengers in the car as well as Zeb. They track the call and are minutes away. What happens next will make you understand why I started this with Wow! And that is just the beginning.

The call begins a cross country case, Bond-like technical devices, important families, dangerous groups, family power struggles, and reveals that could destroy ancient companies. The setting for much of the story is Japan and even Okinawa. We learn more of Zeb's history and what makes him the man he is today. He has some very close calls in this one.

This book is a bit longer than some of his other full lengths books and I still had to read it in one sitting. Another winner. My new favorite Ty Patterson book (until the next one comes out).

I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.

Zeb Carter is a man of a certain set of skills. James Bond would not stand a chance against him. Superman would appreciate having him on his side. He could give Batman a run for his money, and very likely win (sacrilege, I'm sure). And he would definitely fit in with Doc Savage's group were he a friendlier sort.

And still, he is not unstoppable, just mostly unstoppable.

A personal friend of Carter's is killed. In a most public manner. Clues are few. Who is behind this murder? And why? Carter crosses a small part of the globe in search of answers as he and his team of operatives slowly begin piecing things together. Not everything can be solved by computer.

Probably escapist entertainment at its best...

Despite entering this series at the 10th book, I found the story enjoyable and interesting. Zeb Carter and his crew are a force to be reckoned with as they investigate a series of assassinations targeting the daughters of the leaders of black ops organizations. The character descriptions were very good and provided understanding in depth. The style of writing allowed the reader to understand the planning on the criminal side without giving away the identity of the organization involved until the final action. This was a great story, and I will definitely read more in this series.

A freebie from Book Bub- when will I learn? Ironman + Jason Bourne + 007 all rolled into a humble protagonist that is invulnerable to bullets, swords, even jumping from a plane (don't worry, his super-secret pals have designed a shirt that becomes a parachute-- automatically!).
If you like non-stop action with little need for credulity or even much of a plot, this will fill the bill.
On the other hand, if you prefer a bit of thought, complexity, etc., you can do much better.

A beheading, the deaths of two young women and the yakuza keep our hero busy through this novel. A young man dies for his morals. Carter is saved by a fisherman and his son. Carter duels with a samurai. Lots of great action. Carter makes sure Oyahashi's sister and father are cared for and Makito and Toshio get a brand new trawler. Carter always takes care of his people. I love the humility of the Japanese culture. I wish we had even a touch of that grace.

Tedious and unbelievable, hardest Ty Patterson book i have read so far.

This is the most far fetched novel I have read in a long time, totally confusing with all the Japanese names and customs, then, holy batman, he escapes his captors from a plane with shoe bomb and a secret parachute???
Will look for Tye'next comic book....not!

This is a fast paced action thriller novel that is well done. I hadn't read Ty Patterson before and enjoyed reading it. The book reads like a James Bond movie with all the new "gadgets" that his can put at his disposal. It is a little bloody and gory at the beginning but it gets better after that. I will definitely read more of his books, it was an easy fast, vacation type book.

Thoroughly spell binding

A spell binding suspense story with unlikely heroes and mostly unlikable enemies. This is a trap for readers who will find it next to impossible to put it down having commenced. Not to be missed and highly recommended read.

I've gotten into the Zeb Carter series midway, but enjoyed this book. It is a throwback to the good ole action flicks of the 80s and 90s - Showdown in Little China comes to mind. The all-American hero with benefactors and invincibility written all over him. but yet, enjoyable!

I did enjoy parts of this book a lot, but some things, like the superhuma protagonist was dragging it down a bit for me. At times it was also kind of strange in that it kind of gave off some weaboo vibes. It was getting better closer to the end again though.

Fascinating tale of a powerful Yakuza gang who consider themselves, and seem to be, untouchable. That is until they assassinate the daughters of two of Zeb Carter's friends. Zeb takes the war to them on their home turf and proves them wrong. Non-stop action from start to finish. A ripping read.

After reading 2 chapters we know who killed the victim and the motive. The only thing left is to watch as the hero tracks down the bad guy. Not much room for plot development.
