Warner & Lopez #1

The Nemesis Origin

Rate this book
The legends of ancient cultures contain near-identical descriptions of fiery objects that arrived from the sky, of wise beings that brought them knowledge, and of a great flood that destroyed their cities long, long ago. Modern archaeology dismisses these legends as myths. Ethan Warner knows better.

Peru, 1914 Intrepid American explorer Hiram Bingham III discovers the lost Inca citadel of Macchu Picchu, and in doing so launches a race to discover one of the greatest secrets mankind has ever known. Discovered within the citadel are ancient, elongated humanoid skulls that belong to no known species on Earth.

Present day Former US Marine and investigative journalist Ethan Warner has shunned civilization after five investigations with the Defense Intelligence Agency. Living alone in the wilderness, he is tracked down by Dr Lucy Morgan, a scientist who once found the seven thousand year-old remains of an unknown species entombed deep in the deserts of Israel. She brings ominous news: there are more remains being found, and there are people willing to kill to obtain them.

Hurled into a global conspiracy that will take them from the deep waters of the East China Sea to the sweltering jungles of Cambodia, from the deserts of Egypt to the soaring heights of the Andes mountains, Ethan and Lucy must locate and excavate the remains of ancient people whose DNA carries both a message and a cure for a disease born of a species not of this Earth, and in doing so save the life of one young child and change the course of human history…

Great book

Great action, storyline and characters. Glad to see warner back for another series. Lopez, well, I find that she's hard to trust, but still an entertaining character.

An enjoyable romp as long as you suspend reality for the duration! The plot was well thought out and the action was high octane and quite often physically impossible, but hugely entertaining nonetheless, good fun

Disappointed

Ancient civilizations, aliens and international intrigue. What could go wrong? Well, a lot, apparently! The author manages to take a plot with an abundance of exciting elements and reduce it to a fairly dull chase around the world.

Most books require some suspension of disbelief, especially science fiction thrillers. But with this book you are going to need to take your disbelief and launch it into space. I lost track of unbelievable escapes. Apparently crack military teams and Russian criminals can track you down anywhere, but once they get you in their sights they become strangely helpless.

Finally, the author had an agenda and I felt like I was being lectured. This book may be about the grays, but there are no shades of gray allowed.

Not Indiana Jones, but Excellent

Former Marine is "recruited" for a job that leads him into peril as he tries to help an archaeologist looking for answers that eventually lead them into danger on three different continents. Disliking the work he formerly did for an American intelligence agency, he goes "off the grid" for a year before he is discovered and willingly signs on to help the archaeologist.

Excellent and well worth the read!

Excellent story! I really liked the way the author took familiar themes involving ancient civilizations, aliens, shadow government agencies, conspiracy theory and more, and wove them into an exciting, cohesive story. A little bit of adventure for everyone!

Ethan Warner is off the grid, trying to escape his former life! He is tracked down by Lucy Morgan, who needs help. Having helped Lucy before and armed gun men turning up on his door step, a mad dash across the globe begins. A good book with Ethan managing just to stay ahead, as the teams after them track them all the way. For a man who knows how to hide, he does get tracked down a lot!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great premise with great characters and lots of interesting plot twists with a very engaging writing style. First part was a little slow but it really took off after that and became a whole lot of fun to follow the characters.

This novel takes the reader around the world, chasing clues to find the answers behind the mysteries of the past. What one thing ties these cultures together, even though the cultures are from different sides of the world and different times. Who is friend and who is for? And what reason does everyone have to chase after the "treasure?"
I did not want to put this book down... The action was great, the information extensive, and the characters interesting. Plus, there were moments of humor.

New series to me

Found this after reading the Sam Reilly series written by Ernest Dempsey. Enjoyed them, so looked for more books in the archaeological fiction department. This book maintained my interest and provided lots of twists and turns as one would expect with government and dastardly villains involved. Easy to read, and held my interest.

Amazing Read

Great story, this is one of the best written stories on the subject of ancient ruins, old stories on the dual creations of human kind I have read. The more I read the more I could not put the book down. T h e ending was pure magic. Thank You for the entertainment. I look forward to the next one.

Really hard to follow

Pillow h
This author lost me early....the entire book is about flirting around the globe with Russians and Americans pursuing and none of it makes sense. Then halfway through the book, we find out there is a sick child depending on some find??!!nothing in the beginning...really boring..could not finish!!!!

Well... Interesting concept but...

99% of the storyline is a long chase across the world. Parts of the ‘why’ and ‘how’ were underdeveloped and overall I was not satisfied. 1% of the storyline deals with the discovery...

Not sure 🤔

what the problem was. I’m an avid reader but had trouble with 📚 book 📖 holding my attention. The plot was very interesting but some of the sections seemed to go on and on and on. It may have just been me😱though I haven’t experienced this often. Thanks

smacks of XFiles somewhat...

Government conspiracy, majestic 12 (i wonder if the smoking man is one of them)

aliens visiting the Earth...

and of course, completely improbable miracles saving a child with alien DNA...

Been there, done that...XFiles....Yawn...

An entertaining thriller and the first in a series. Ex-US Marine Ethan Warner comes to the aid of scientist Dr Lucy Morgan who is seeking proof that an alien race intervened in the development of the human race. Fast paced "Boys own adventure".

This book had just about everything, aliens, gene manipulation, death, political intrigue, medical experimentation, serious globe hopping, archeology research, action, adventure, and bodies dropping every other page. There was also some serious mental planning going on too.

First of all, this is a well-written story with lots of action. In fact, lots and lots of action. I am more a fan of apocalyptic thrillers, which this was not. It *does* have a fantastical twist, which I *do* like - but it focuses, for my taste, too much on action. And too much on the almost over-the-top heroics of the...hero of the book. But if that sort of thing is to your tastes, it is well done in this novel, and you will like it.

Dean Crawford is a British author writing a fiction series set in America with America protagonists. He largely does this well. Unlike other British cross-over novelists, he rarely uses British phrases and idioms. Rarely. However he is clearly an Anglophile. And definitely writes his characters with enough stereotyping to be a bit of a distraction - for this American reader.

The one thing I find **very** disappointing, is the way Mr. Foster titles his novels. When I purchased this one, I had no idea it was *not* the first in the series. Neither the title nor the subtitle suggested anything other than this is the first in the series of stories. It in fact it is at least the second in the larger story line, but the first - I am thinking - in a sub-line. By the time I realized this novel built upon a previous story (I might have wanted to read first) it was too late.

All in all, this type of thriller is not my first choice. However it is well written and quite superior for this sort of fiction. If you like action-packed techno-thrillers with a fantastical twist, you will definitely like this novel. Just be forewarned, this it NOT the first book in the series.
