***Hello Readers! I just want to pop in here and explain that I do not accept friend requests on social media (Goodreads included) unless I know you in real life for several reasons, foremost being the nature of my husband's military job. I promise it isn't personal, and I appreciate everyone who wants to know more about me!***

Erin Beaty was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, which means she can't drive a tractor, but she won't eat veggies that come from a can. She graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in rocket science and somehow always ended up writing her study group's lab reports. After serving in the fleet as a weapons officer and a leadership instructor, she resigned to take care of her growing family. It still amazes her when other people want to hear the stories that come out of her head.

She and her husband have five children, two cats, and a vegetable garden and live wherever the navy tells them to go.

Erin Beaty is represented by Valerie Noble. Her young adult fantasy adventure, THE TRAITOR'S KISS, the first in a trilogy called The Traitor's Trilogy, will be released May 9th, 2017

✅ Characters
✅ Plot and plot-twists
✅ World-building
✅ Action and spying
✅ Pace (some parts are so intense!)
✅ Romance / Angst

Why is this series not more popular?!

The sequel is definitely as good as the first book, and I would even say it is better. I just couldn't stop once I started it, I finished the whole book in two sittings.

Many parts of this book kept me at the edge of my seat, it is a real page-turner. The author has a way to create suspense and to leave mini cliffhangers when she goes from Sage's point of view to Alex's. I wanted to scream at Sage at some point and I had to force myself not to skim the pages until the end of the chapter to see how it would all go down. The short chapters also help to create a faster pace when needed.

The plot is interesting, again it is a good mix of politics and action (there is more action in this book), with a touch of romance and sentimentality, and there is a good balance between all these aspects. The relationship between Alex and Sage is sweet and I loved reading about it, even though Alex was in auto-destruction mode for the first part of this book. It did add some drama on top of everything that was going on, and they had a rough time in the first part of the book (but the angst-lover in me liked it).

“I'm not sorry for what I did, but I'm sorry it was necessary.”

“I'm not sure love is enough to fix this.”

They both respect each other, and they trust their partner's strength, wits, and skills to guide them through battles and political schemes. It is a nice change from the damsel in distress and the overprotective strong man.

A big part of this story takes place in Casmuni and we are introduced to many great new characters. I really hope that we will see more of them in the third book. I liked Darit and Banneth, but I especially enjoyed reading Huzar's chapters and I want to know more about him. The respect he has for Sage's courage and strength even though she is his enemy is inspiring.

“An enemy one could respect was far preferable to an ally without honor...”

I can't wait to read the final book in this amazing series, and it better be good because I have high expectations.

Ahhhhh, I had the worst time reading this book - not because the plot or anything sucks, but because of this god damn SLUMP. I started reading this on august 19 and just finished. It took me over a month to finish this and I just wasn’t feeling anything. It’s sad because I loved the first book.

Not sure if I’ll continue with the third book. I hate slumps. I hate them.

3.5 stars.

I love me some political scheming, alliances and treachery. Never thought I’d enjoy it, but I do!

I am here for it, bitch. 😤😤

I have great news: I am officially a part of the publication of this book! I am going to review the author's manuscript before ARCs are distributed this November. In light of the unwarranted hate toward The Traitor's Kiss, I was tasked to pay special attention to the sequel's representation of diverse characters. I really admire Erin Beaty's humility, as well as her resolve to make her work excellent. If you're hesitating to read TTK because of all the negative reviews, please take a leap of faith and form your own, justified opinion(s).

If you want to know more of my thoughts, you can read my review of TTK here.

I many ways, this book was a big improvement to the author's first book (which I did like as well, but it had a few ups and downs when it came to the storytelling). Especially the writing and construction of the storyline seemed so much better here! I also really enjoyed the change of setting and a few new friendships along the way.

While there were no big problems with book one, this sequel seemed to have much more diverse cast of characters, and the story benefitted from the change of setting to me. I enjoyed visting Casmun and the desert city. I really liked the direction of the plot as well, even though some parts may have been slower for me, the ending became gripping. Sage is a great character to follow, even though I personally don't feel 100% connected to her, nor Alex, for some reason. I like them both, especially appreciate Sage's character, I just wasn't as emotionally invested in them as I should've been at some parts. I know for certain many other readers will though. That's mainly why I'm not giving this sequel four stars.

P.S. I'm hoping The Matchmaker wil make an important appearance in the last one.

So my last update said this book was banished for the night.... BUT I decided to keep going and now that it's past 230am... IT WAS WORTH IT OH MY HECK!

So short review for this one:

I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOVE Alex Quinn and Sage Fowler oh my heck! These two are actually special characters and such a great OTP and this book with their story had some pretty intense moments and the twists and turns and the foreshadow and knowing things some of the characters didn't know (especially these two) AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!! I'm just glad I had a freaking hard 2000 piece puzzle that I finished a little after this and the audiobook to keep me sane haha.

So this book was actually a LOT better than book 1 but the ONLY reason this is getting 4 stars is cause of the end of the Epilogue. It wasn't my favorite or HUGE cliffhanger, but I still kinda wish it DIDN'T have one and left it where it was before cause now I can't WAIT to get my hands on the last book next year! but I'm glad I was able to read/listen to these this year to get them done so I don't have to wait as long :D

but overall I highly recommend this series. they're not amazing but good enough that I think many readers should meet Alex and Sage. Plus Alex is a freaking sweetheart and I want his babies ;) *laughing hysterically emoji* but I want to steal kisses with him too.

so go read about these two cause they're seriously the greatest thing ever and their banter, friendship, their stubbornness, and just everything about them is too good. But I"m amaze however it took me almost a week to read/listen to this AND be able to also finish another book as well considering how slow and busy I am lately!

Hmm. That was. Well. A book, for sure.

I liked the first book well enough—enough that I wanted to read the sequel, anyway. Unfortunately, it seems the author should have probably stuck with a one-off.

This book was just rather...bland. First off, Alex and Sage, the main characters and love interests, really should not have gotten together in the first book. Half of the reason why I found this book so mind numbingly boring was that they were already together, and the plot points the author used to cause friction and angst were so horribly forced that they wound up being irritating rather than interesting.

Like, Sage, the royal tutor and not a trained spy/soldier by any stretch of the imagination despite her experiences in the first book, throwing a hissy fit that her army officer fiancé will not let her come with him on what is basically a secret, black ops mission? Like... what the actual, literal hell? Alex was 100% right in not wanting Sage to come along, and Sage, as well as the author paint him as some terrible, exclusionary monster who doubts Sage's abilities. It absolutely infuriated me.

Also, I'd really love some world-building consistency as to the role of women. Is it an inclusionary world where a woman can become pretty much whatever she wants to (as Sage seems completely able to do with little fanfare) or are they married off at the whims of the family patriarch to get them out of their hair? Like... the societal rules are so scattered (except where Sage is involved, apparently) that I can't pin them down.

The fact that Sage snuck into the army disguised as a squire (despite the Queen's hand in making it happen) should have involved some sort of reprimand, especially since her decision wound up creating a man-hunt for herself and the youngest prince, a battle in a foreign land, and numerous dead men on her hands.

And yet, at the end of the book, Sage is awarded an ambassador position for her country—but her best friend Clare now needs to go live with her because, now that this best friend's fiancé died in the battle in order to save Sage, Clare would need to go back to live with her abusive father and be married off to some terrible man without her getting any say in the matter.

Consistency? What is that?

And villains? There was not one clear enemy in this whole book, just vague armies and also a half baked assassination plot by some noble. If even your villain is boring and bland as hell, you've officially lost me as a reader.

As a lover of well-thought out and terrible villains, this book was most Definitely not for me.

Anyway, the entire book felt like a blur. I was told about dialogue rather than just being given the dialogue itself. The entire assassination plot in Casmun was so very predictable and boring. The entire book was just boring, and I'm so disappointed, honestly.

Well, I'm definitely curious as to what the third book could possibly be about as this one seemed to wrap itself up rather neatly.

I really should write reviews soon after finishing a book because I can't really remember what happens in this (which I guess means it wasn't that memorable).

I just remembered that I liked it but felt that there wasn't really any climax (i guess second book problems). We got multiple POVs including one from one of the 'bad guys' who in reality just wanted to go home and wasn't really bad. There was some drama/misunderstanding between Sage and Alex which was interesting for a while, also the murder plot was interesting too (just remembered this lol).

Aber was soll man sagen…. She‘s not like other girls.

🎵Maml - This moment

Bookhangover live 😭

I NEED MORE 😱

cannot for the life of me remember what happened in the first book, but it probably contributed towards me being not as heavily invested in the second book. I found it slightly generic/filler-ish until 200 pages in, at which point it became more intriguing, and I loved the new Casmun characters.

I think what I love most about the way Erin Beaty writes, is how she builds her stories brick by brick. She creates the characters, the scenarios, the motivations, and stacks them into this flawless tower. Then, at the end, she takes a ginormous wrecking ball and shatters the whole darn thing.

In this second installment of the Traitor's Kiss series, Alex is given commission of a new force, checking on reports of a potential invasion from Casmun. By order of the queen, Sage tags along, much to Alex's dismay. After what happened in the last book, he's terrified of something happening to her, and he's also concerned about losing his post when his soldiers fail to expose any nefarious plots. So he creates one. The wrong one.

Then the real danger comes for Sage and the young prince Nicholas, and they escape into the deserts of Casmun under the protection of their king. Everyone in this story makes mistakes. The "bad" guys. The "good" guys. I like that no one in this is perfect, and their sometimes bad choices end up making things worse than they were before. It makes for a very real story, and I am always, always a fan of gray characters.

For someone who is supposedly smart, Sage does a lot of obviously stupid things and she doesn't act like she's in love with Alex by constantly undermining him and not respecting his command. Alex is equally annoying and makes too many emotional decisions for a military leader. The narration is overly explanatory at times and awkward at other times, like the author doesn't expect the reader to understand subtext. There's a weird lecture about racism that seems out of place. Also, it's military propoganda. All of those issues aside, it was a decent enough read until the last 30ish pages. It should have ended several chapters earlier than it did.

This book was such an utter disappointment to me. I was fairly excited to start it after the first book, confusing as the author's writing is at times. Sage has gone from semi-enjoyable to downright annoying and whiny. She knows nothing about fighting but likes to tell herself that she should go behind her fiancee's back and follow his army around like a lost puppy. You could tell the author wanted her to be a badass, independent woman, which I'm all about, but she did not live up to my lowest expectations. She whines when someone points out that maybe she shouldn't go with the army because she's stupid enough to do things like disappear in the woods without telling anyone, but hey the queen asked her to spy on her own fiancee so why not. Any love I had for their relationship got swept down the drain within the first 50 pages. The fact that either of them would spy on each other is just so despicable to me. And Sage has the audacity to ignore Alex and act all mad at him when she was the one that keeps sneaking behind his back.

This is literally every convo they have with each other:

A: You can't come scouting with me. It's dangerous (and you're useless)
S: But I want tooooooooooooooooooooooo
A: Ugh fine I guess you can come

Literally the only character I kinda liked was the bad guy and it was because he was at least semi-interesting to read about.

Listen, ok, if you liked the book, you can like the book. But I couldn't stomach reading it anymore. I feel bad leaving such a negative review but if the book made me feel like it deserved one star, that's what I'm going to give it. It might just be that I've read so many young adult books now, that this one did not meet any of my expectations.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I’m still stuck on how much I liked the first book... since I listened to it the first time I put it on my iPad and kept going back and reading my favorite parts. The first book had strong character development, funny/smart dialogue and a reasonably engaging plot.

The second installment of this series kind of dampens my enjoyment of the first book. It’s to the point I wish the first book was a one-off instead of a series.

Plot-wise, I kept asking myself... what is the point of all this? It kind of reminded me of those random filler episodes in anime like Naruto where they go off on a random side journey. I don’t want to call it sloppy - the author put a lot of thought into the political side of the story and I thought the details of that were well done, but it wasn’t engaging like the first book. It all felt superficial and kind of rushed. It kind of seemed like she used the same plot devices here too. Which leads me into the characters...

At the beginning of the first book, I was almost considering abandoning ship because Sage was a such a little asshole. Her character made a quip that made me laugh out loud and she began to develop into something decent. For me in book two, I wanted to punch her in the face a majority of the time. It feels like a lot of the development she had went out the window in book two. Alex felt about as bland as a blank sheet of paper... there was no complexity to his character at all. It lacked feeling when things happened to the characters. There was no emotional depth. I should give a shit, but I kind of didn’t. Character consistency is one of my biggest pet peeves in books/series and although this one isn’t the worst offender, it is noticeable. How da fuck is Sage soooo proficient with weapons and shit now?Smelling like a Mary Sue up in this bitch.

A worthwhile (for me) thing to note again is that the matchmaker thing was really interesting to me. The Matchmaker was an interesting character who’s matches could change the seat of power in their fictional country. I wish this was explored more and not used as a cheap plot device in the first book. I feel like it wasn’t used to it’s full potential in the first book and I had no expectations that it would be here... but I needed something to spice this second book up.

Despite, for me, a lackluster sophomore book I still think there is promise here. If not for the series, then for the author. She does some things really well but she wasn’t able to carry over what made the first book enjoyable. A well-developed world is great, but if I don’t give a fuck about the characters or what happens to them in this well-built world, what is the point?

Also - the title of these books still irritate me. Makes these books seem like something they aren’t.

I think the best thing about this book is the few times we see Alex cry. He literally sobs and it's the most touching scene I can ever read. Seeing a soldier break down like that-for love-was just amazing.

I absolutely love how realistic this book is. Important people actually died! Heaven forbid. (I think I've read too many Sarah J Maas books because she doesn't allow her characters to die.) And the love interest wasn't all smooth sailing. They had their ups and downs. Heck, she even thought I can't begin to explain my appreciation for a book well done such as this.

I did have a hard time picking it back up after reading a few chapters. It's one of those books that is fantastic while reading but loses its colour once it's out of sight. I finally decided to read the last half in one sitting even though I was dead tired. I finished at 12:15 a.m. and proud of it.

Well done, Erin Beaty! When I finished The Traitor’s Kiss, I was concerned that things had been too neatly tied up for there to be a continuation on to a second and third book and that all the author’s good ideas may have been spent. I had also dealt with a fair amount of confusion when reading book 1 (both from POV and the writing itself). But I held out hope that with her debut novel behind her, book 2 would be better.

And it was!!!

To start, I didn’t suffer any confusion as I read. No rereading required unless I just wanted to. (*good sign*) The writing is definitely better.

I really liked the storyline. This book had good plot bones - conflict, lots of emotional struggle, action, betrayal, and loss. While it gets off to little bit of a slow (and a little bit annoying) start, it then becomes quite interesting and exciting. And throughout Beaty works in moments and characters that build for the future.

Sage is smart as a whip, which I love. Yes, she’s only 18 and she’s saving the day again, but I like that about her. And she is brave and self-sacrificing and I think her character rocks.

My mooshy heart loves Alex and Sage. Their tender moments in this book are perfect. And happily, the romance is appropriate for a YA book. They both grow in book 2, and they also deal with the emotional and physical consequences of their experiences, which I appreciated.

I also like the way Beaty has developed the different cultures in the series. It seems like each book gives us a deeper look into one of the countries on the map. Sage’s journey in book 2 takes her into Casmun, where we meet great new characters, like Davit and Banneth, and see beautiful new friendships develop.

P.S. I also love Casseck. I hope we see more of him in book 3.

With all that said, The Traitor’s Ruin wasn’t perfect. But I enjoyed it so much, I prefer not to dwell on its few shortcomings. Can’t wait to dive in to book 3!

Send help, please!

This book went a little off the rails from the first book. I loved the first book. I’m not entirely sure what happened here. These characters were nothing like they were in the first book in the first half or so. Sage sucked and for some reason Alex’s character totally changed.

The second half was so much better but I was already so bummed about the beginning that it was hard to get over it. This book was an easy 5++++ stars if the beginning was normal. The political intrigue is great. I really like this author and her writing is great and I will read anything else she writes and the third book.
