J.D. Lakey is an award-winning author of science fiction and fantasy stories. Her lyrical writing style and passionate connection to her characters pull you in and take you on an emotional journey of discovery in expertly-crafted worlds where futuristic technologies reside amidst primordial landscapes.
Her love of writing stemmed from growing up on a cattle ranch and farm under the endless star-filled Montana skies as far from civilization as anyone in the twentieth century could get. There, she explored the finer nuances of silence and the endless possibilities of the imagination. The shifting of fortunes finally granted her the time to gather all the stories and give them flesh. She currently lives in San Diego, California where she divides her time between her writing, commuting on the I-5 to her day job, and convincing her grandchildren that magic exists.
I really wish I had found this series this week. It would have been great to read all 6 books as one story without having to wait for the next episode to be published because I kept forgetting things from the previous books. This is quite a sophisticated story and Book 6 is vastly different from Book 1 where we meet Cheobawn and Blackwind Pack. The little girl who stubbornly refused to be restricted and victimized by the rejection that her black bead invited discovers that her place in her world was never a mistake as she had always thought. Raised in a living dome on the highlands of her planet, in a matriarchal community where balance and peace and human capability and psychological development have been genetically engineered over thousands of years she finds her psi abilities far surpass those of her sister "ears" and she is able to commune with all of the other sentient beings in her world. It is time for Cheobawn to meet her destiny and that is putting it extremely mildly. In these final chapters the inhabitants of the dome and the citizens of the lowlands and the sentient beings of their planet and beyond are brought together for a showdown that could end in peace between the players involved - or not. But first Cheobawn wants answers and revenge. This story is quite complex and extremely well written. I was surprised each time I was reminded that this story is about children and that did bother me for some reason. Cheobawn is only eleven when we leave her and in her society emotional and actual maturity is officially reached at twelve. I loved this series and wish we could learn more about Cheobawn and Blackwind Pack. There's no way they are giving up their forays.
This is a rating for all of the series up to and including Warrior Witch . Good story line continuous over series. Good characters with complex and understandable personalitits
