This book plumbs nine New Testament passages to unfold this great theme and help us live in step with the Spirit. Written in John MacArthur's direct, accessible style, it is ideal for Bible study groups, church leaders, or individual believers who want to grow in godliness.
John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
This book is a compendium of teaching adapted from The MacArthur New Testament Commentary, arranged thematically around the believer's walk, or how a Christian should live. As such, there is nothing 'new' in this book, but it is helpfully arranged in a topical manner, and it is therefore a useful 'shortcut' to what John MacArthur teaches on the topic of how a Christian should live, using the obvious and helpful metaphor of walking.
There are 9 chapters on 'walking ...', with 4 dealing with passages in Ephesians, 2 on passages in John's epistles, and 1 each for Romans, 2 Corinthians, and Galatians. Broadly they are all insightful and helpful, but I think that many, as I did, will find Chapter 3: Walking in Newness of Life (Rom. 6:1-10) insightful and challenging!
This is a very handy format to engage with MacArthur's teaching if you have not read him before, and I have no doubt that the series will become popular with many who don't wish to purchase the full NT Commentary series ... his magnum opus!
This book is an in-depth Bible study on "what does it mean to walk with Christ?" The author examined nine New Testament passages that talk about different aspects of the Christian walk. He would take each passage and provide verse-by-verse commentary (including word studies). The tone was formal and somewhat academic rather than casual. The commentary was very focused on what Scripture has to say about our walk with Christ. The verses covered were Ephesians 4:1-6, Ephesians 4:17-24, Romans 6:1-10, Galatians 5:16-25, 1 John 2:3-6, 1 John 1:6-7, Ephesians 5:1-7, 2 John 1-4, and 2 Corinthians 5:6-10. Overall, I'd recommend this Bible study to those interested in what the Bible says about this topic.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine.
A helpful commentary on a Christian’s walk with Christ. Before starting this, I didn’t realize how much of a “study” it was… very packed with scriptures which I appreciated. At times the concentration of the biblical quotes would make following MacArthurs train of thought difficult, but not impossible.
Man is made for God and designed according to His standards. When he rejects God and His standards, he destroys himself in the process.
Our relationship with Christ is walking with him. In Nine Chapters, MacArthur's paves the way of the walk of abiding in Christ.
1-Walking Worthy of the Gospel 2-Waling as a New Person 3-Walking in Newness of Life 4-Walking by the Spirit 5-Walking in Obedience 6-Walking in Love 7-Walking in Wisdom 8-Walking in The Truth 9-Walking by Faith
In MacArthur's style of teaching, he does not lead you to rabbit holes or do this and get that. What he does is reveal scripture. Each Chapter takes scripture on building our walk with Christ. Our posture before God and men and in doing so we come to the presence of God.
Some of the quotes that I found encouraging.
Pride is the sin of competing with God, and humility is the virtue of submitting to the His supreme glory.
God's love, and all love that is like His, happens for the sake of giving, not getting. With conditional love, if the conditions are not met there is no obligation to love.
If given free rein, sexual sins lead to complete insensitivity to the feelings and welfare of others, to horrible brutality, and even to murder.
The wise believer knows his life principles, his limited privileges, and the Lord's purposes.
Each chapter builds on the other and quite honestly is pure bible teaching.
Highly recommend
A Special Thank You to Moody Publishers and Netgalley for the ARC the opportunity to post an honest review.
The Believer's Walk with Christ is a meaty, substantive book by John MacArthur. The theme of this one is WALKING WITH CHRIST. Each chapter studies a different Scripture text highlighting that theme. Texts studied and explored include: Ephesians 4:1-6; Ephesians 4:17-24; Romans 6:1-10; Galatians 5:16-25; 1 John 2:3-6, 1 John 1:6-7; Ephesians 5:2; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10. Each chapter gives in-depth coverage of that Scripture passage.
This one is rich in insight, and weighty in importance. For that reason, I would recommend you to read the book very differently from how I read it. I read it in two or three days. I definitely regret rushing it. I do. So my advice: take your time, and, read intentionally, thoughtfully.
If you're familiar with John MacArthur's teaching, you may not need much convincing to pick this one up. You will be aware of the relevance of his work. You will be aware of his diligence to preach and truth the word of God. For those not familiar with his teaching, this one is a good representative. And probably a LOT less controversial than some of his other books.
TRUE OR FALSE: Too many Christians are glad to have the spiritual security, blessings, and promises of the gospel but have too little sense of responsibility in conforming to its standards and obeying its commands.
TRUE OR FALSE: The Lord expects us to act like the new persons we have become in Jesus Christ. He expects His standards to become our standards, His purposes our purposes, His desires our desires, His nature our nature. The Christian life is simply the process of becoming what you are.
TRUE OR FALSE: Right doctrine is essential to right living. It is impossible to live a faithful Christian life without knowing biblical doctrine. Doctrine simply means teaching, and there is no way that even the most sincere believer can live a life pleasing to God without knowing what God Himself is like and knowing the sort of life God wants him to live. Those who set biblical theology aside also set aside sound Christian living.
TRUE OR FALSE: God’s work cannot be served by the world’s ways. God’s call is to humility and His work is only accomplished through humility.
TRUE OR FALSE: The first sin was pride, and every sin after that has been in some way an extension of pride.
TRUE OR FALSE: A believer can no more sanctify himself than he could have saved himself in the first place. He cannot live the Christian life by his own resources any more than he could have saved himself by his own resources. In its most profound yet simple definition, the faithful Christian life is a life directed and empowered by the Spirit.
TRUE OR FALSE: Whatever God establishes, Satan will counterfeit. Where God establishes true love, Satan produces counterfeit love. Counterfeit love characterizes Satan’s children, those who are of the world, just as true love characterizes God’s children, those who are citizens of heaven.
I would definitely recommend this thought-provoking new book by John MacArthur.
This book is part of the John MacArthur Study Series. It is comprised of chapters adapted from the MacArthur New Testament Commentary. Each chapter focuses on a specific theme and is supported by a passage of Scripture. Each chapter is designed to take the reader down deep into the text of the scripture: 1. Walking Worthy of the Gospel - Eph 4:1-6 2. Walking as a New Person - Eph 4:17-24 3. Walking in the Newness of Life - Rom 6:1-10 4. Walking by the Spirit - Gal 5:16-25 5. Walking in Obedience - 1 John 2:3-6 6. Walking in Love - Eph 5:2 7. Walking in Wisdom - 5:15-17 8. Walking in Truth - 2 John 1-4 9. Walking in Faith - 2 Cor 5:6-10
This is a great resource for all Christians, regardless of your maturity level or where you are in your walk with Christ. MacArthur lays the foundation early in the book and builds on it with each chapter. This book should be read carefully and intentionally, and then used as a reference for Christian living, evangelism, and discipleship. I received this as a free ARC from Moody Publishers on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Remember the time when handbooks were popular in schools, companies and organizations? This book by Maxwell is formatted the same way, hitting the basics that need to be present in a follower’s life. These are good follow-up Bible studies to those young in the faith. They are more comprehensive than the campus crusade for Christ follow-up series, but still doctrinal in approach. It will be helpful for the young believer to still have an older disciple be his mentor, so that practical advice can be given for real-life situations that he encounters on a daily basis, e.g., how to reach out to atheists, how much to give to God, how to effectively help the poor, etc.
This book provides a comprehensive summary of how to live out the Lordship of Christ which impacts all areas on our lives, requiring a complete change of mindset and lifestyle.
I received a copy of this episode from the publisher via NetGalley.
This book is vintage John Macarthur. Dr. Macarthur does a masterful job of laying out not just the natural responsibilities of holy living that flow from a relationship with Christ, but gives excellent theological underpinnings for the way in which a Christian is called to walk. One issue that I have with many Christian books is that they turn into "do better" or "you ought to" books without really giving the why's that are tied to Scripture. This book will be a great read and resource for believers of any level of maturity because it does such a good job of laying a foundation and then building upon it. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly to any member of my congregation seeking to move past the "do better" books and fully understand why they are called to walk in a certain way as they follow Christ.
