I loved this series so much start to end, i adored how it was about both the leads saving/helping eachother as much as it was saving her, it made my heart melt. The character development was amazing, just the story itself was so good, and the art was beautiful!
This is definitely gonna be one of my go to recommendations!
not to get extremely personal in the goodreads review section but the other day while reading through old letters ive collected from old friends and family members, i basically broke down crying and ended up writing in my journal that i am never as alone as i feel in the past present and certainly in the future and like idk why i picked this manga from all the recs i got the other day but this short and sweet series really reinforced that. yes i am crying like a mf again and this will probably stick w me for the rest of my life as i will think of it when i am feeling dreadful and lonely but yknow what. crying is ok! lets just hope my eyes arent puffy tmrw morning
update: i did wake up with puffy eyes bro this is so sick
In the first half of this gentle supernatural-affected romance series, I was mildly interested but not super impressed. Shizu's ghostly possession was an interesting twist, and it explained why Shizu lacked much personality of her own (literally, it's a plot point), but the nature of the story also meant that there wasn't a lot happening, just hinting at darker secrets or more discoveries to come.
Happily, because of the deliberately-paced first half, the story can start revealing more, and letting Shizu develop into a more distinct character, in this second half without it feeling like it's going too fast. They laid a good foundation (which isn't always the case with manga), so a good read--particularly if you can have the entire 6-volume series at hand to go through together or in short order.
There are a lot of emotions in this story. Shizu's developing personality and self-discovery centers on Tetsu: she spends a lot of time not sure what she likes, except that it involves him. And he's written as such a nice character, this is understandable: Tetsu is a hard worker, earnest without being overbearing, and also feels a strong sense of duty to help people--a pivotal part of the plot turns out to be how this feeling of duty affects him and leads him to take on things, for example, to help his family without actually telling his family what he's doing. It's an incredibly understandable thing, while also being sad because you understand that a teenager shouldn't have to do that.
Tetsu's family and friends feature, and get more characterization in the back half of the series, leading to a decently fleshed-out cast where you can understand fairly well (and feel it's understandable) why people feel and act the way they do.
Shizu's ghosts, too, get more character development, as well as the revelation of their histories. And dammit this made me cry, in a good way. The ghosts are characters who care about Shizu but also had their own previous lives, and the way they interact with the world of the living is bittersweet and left me feelings Emotions.
The last bit of closure for the series is the ghosts inhabiting Shizu's body. They need closure in order to move on, and Shizu and Tetsu decide to find it. Haru is the biggest surprise, both sad and sweet. Shizu forms a friendship with his daughter in the search, though. Shizu gets to continue discovering herself. Finding out who she is and what she likes, and what she wants. I really like these kinds of plot lines/characters to begin with, and it's nice to see Shizu figuring these things out. She's getting out there and making friendships, going after what she wants, and growing her relationship with Tetsu along the way. The ending for this series was really sweet. It wrapped up all of the loose threads, including Shizu's relationship with her father and Tetsu's mother's status. Some a little open, but on the way to getting better, I think. This was a really sweet series, and I'm glad I followed it.
Today’s post is on Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty, Vol. 6 by Megumi Morino. It is 200 pages long and is published by Kodansha Comics. The cover has Shizu and Tetsu on it looking happy. As it is the sixth in the series, you need to have read the first five volumes for you to understand the story. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this series. The story is told from third person close of the characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- SWEET DREAMS
After a hectic summer, Shizu and her mother welcome a calm autumn in their home. Every day, Shizu grows more certain of herself, but after meeting the living daughter of one of her ghosts, she realizes it all comes at a price. The spirits within her know they are existing on borrowed time, and no one is more worried than Shizu. As a newfound loneliness creeps into her heart, she finds out the hard way that there is plenty to gain in letting go…
Review- This was a moving and excellent final volume. Shizu has been getting better with others and more comfortable with herself so that means something is changing in her heart. Her ghost friends know that means she will not be a host for them anymore and they want her to be able to accept this and to move on with her new life. Of course she has to mourn them because they were her friends when she had no one else. It was a very moving volume dealing with grief, changes in life, and letting go. The ending is very hopeful about Testsu’s mother. I really enjoyed this manga, I would recommend it, and I would read another series by this author.
I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
Buku terakhirrrr, akhirnya perjalanan Shizu sampai disini juga. I really love the ending, dan ga nyangka buku ini tuh mengungkapkan banyak rahasia ya.
Bener2 tersentuh sama kisah temen-temen Shizu yg udah nemenin sampai disini. Haru-san, Shinobu-san, Kanato, you will be remembered.
Masa kecil dia lumayan kelam, gaes.
I love the back story about Chii-chan, yang berhasil overcome his loneliness and being good friend with Tet-chan, menerima ability dy apa adanya yg malah dy seneng banget karena bisa berguna untuk bantu Tet-chan. I really hope Chii will end up with Ryou.
And it’s a happy ending, gaes, walopun sampe akhir ga tau Ibunya Tetsu bakal bangun dari koma apa ga, karena.... udah ah nanti spoiler.
Akhirnya, akhirnya Tetsu confess lagi dong, dan dibales ama Shizu //nepok nepok meja//. Terus Tetsu bilang, ak jatuh cinta sama kamu dari awal, pas kamu bangun dan senyum cantik pas liat aku. Aku jadi penasaran itu kamu atau Haru-san? Lol. Trus mukanya Shizu merah, tau kannnn artinyaaaa //nepok-nepok lagi//
A pretty satisfying series overall. I wish there was a final epilogue chapter to tie up the revelation at the end, but leaving it there wasn’t bad either. The explanation that she developed a sense of self late, and there was so much empty space for other souls to fill until she was able to find her own self was pretty good - I had wondered how she would live the rest of her life afflicted by ghosts taking her over. “Mirei’s” attempts to meet people’s help her out were explained, though I guess she didn’t see Tetsu as a potential love interest (maybe because of the ghost phobia?). Her identity tied in neatly to show how Shizu grew interested in Tetsu. 8 years in a coma is a long time; would she have awakened sooner if not for helping her old friend? I’d like to know if she retains memories of her time when she does wake up. I wish it had fleshed out the father a bit more, because I didn’t really understand his relationship with Shinobu or Sanae. As it is, he was left as a pretty terrible parent.
I’m really enjoying the other series by this author (that’s how I found this one). She writes interesting couples that don’t fit into a”normal” category.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I pretty much read dive into this series blindly, the synopsis is interesting but I didn’t expect it to be a lil on heavier side, heartwarming and heart-touching with a lil occult aspect. A lil content warning there’s 1-2 scene of physical abuse and some emotional abuse (neglect) in the series. I like how the relatable the ml is, he’s scared of occult stuff and reacted like how most people would but he try his best to handle it better and understand how others feels. He’s so caring, reliable, and emotionally strong, he’s expressive and empathetic but he’s most definitely not a pushover. I kinda sad for the fl because of her condition she’s being neglected by her own parents, think of her like Rapunzel, sure they provided her with basic necessity but none emotionally. I’m just glad she has kind souls that surrounded and try to protect, help, and encourage her to learn how to be herself. I’m glad to see the growth of not only the ml & fl but also the supporting characters. I thoroughly enjoy this series, it warms my heart. Just in case, prepare some tissue when you read this book, especially on the later volume.
For a 6-volume series, this managed to have no loose ends and a satisfying conclusion on all fronts? That never happens! I am so happy that I picked up this series!
If you don't know, this is the final volume of Shizu and Tetsu's story. Tetsu takes a job housekeeping and finds himself falling for the beautiful mystery of a girl who lives there, Shizu. When his first confession of love goes awry, he learns that Shizu is not just hidden away for no reason. She has a group of ghosts that borrow her body!
This series follows that premise to every emotional high and low. I cried, I was shocked, I was fearful, I smiled, and I laughed. Not one plot thread was lost, and, in actuality, all plot threads ended in a perfect finalizing bow. The storytelling was impressive, the characters lovable, the relationships and emotions realistic beyond belief. The art! The art was gorgeous and subtle and so emotive. It has been a while since I felt so at peace with a manga ending.
Series: 5☆ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Volume: 5☆ ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED OBVIOUSLY
Series Rating: 4.5 Stars Series Read: May 2023 Format: Paperback (library) Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Contemporary Romance Content: scary ghost situations, parental neglect/abuse, death
Please note this is a review of the entire 6-volume series. No spoilers, though! :)
Wow. Just wow. This has to be one of the most masterfully plotted stories I have ever read, manga or novel. And that is on top of the unique and engrossing story, with its different and loveable characters your heart immediately tangles with. But the twists: so subtle but so shocking yet so obvious and perfectly placed for maximum effect. Just wow. I'm looking forward to re-reading the series soon with complete understanding to really get the full impact. Come for the genuine characters and sweet, innocent romance with its bittersweet but beautiful happy ending, but prepare to be dazzled by the masterful storytelling. At only 6 volumes, it's a novel told in manga form, so definitely acquire the entire series for a straight binge.
This was a wonderful wrap-up to Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty . The feels in this final volume! There was a lot of focus on Shizu’s ghosts, in this volume, which really helped wrap things up, we got to see more of their back stories then in most of the other volumes (with the exception of Shinobu and Mirei). And Shizu can just be Shizu with all the happiness, love, loss and emotion that comes with. What I really loved was the hope in this final volume. I admit I was not entirely convinced I would like this series in the beginning, but I am glad I gave it a chance. I loved following the journey of these characters up through this final volume, and I love the future-oriented, hope-filled feeling I’m left with at the end of this series.
I told myself I wasn’t going to cry over manga anymore and the last chapter to this volume, and this series, messed me up. In a good way though. Also, the subtle cliffhanger with Tetsu’s mother was mean but so wonderfully done. I wish there a volume 7 simply to have an extra/bonus volume to this lovely series. Maybe very short chapters of what the spirits did while in Shizu’s body that weren’t shown in the series? Or how everyone looks as adults and their own families? Or a bigger glimpse of each spirit’s live before they passed? There is room to expand the story a bit and I just enjoyed this series a lot more than I expected to.
I'm fairly certain that the tears hasn't dried yet by the time I was typing my review. Even if I put together my praises and acknowledgements of the series, it sure won't be enough to describe how big this series has made an impact of my view of letting go.
In the end, I would only say something concise. To all the people who's having their hard time from grieving or mourning, perhaps this series is made for you. I want you to have the full experience of reading this series thoroughly. I'm proud to say I have been healed, albeit partly, but I'm getting better.
Straight-up cried on the train reading this volume. I'm actually glad that the story wrapped up the way it did -- there was no way an authentic ending wouldn't be at least a little bittersweet -- but oof, there were quite a few tearjerker moments. I do recommend this series for readers who like a bittersweet romance or coming of age story! The art is absolutely gorgeous and it's a tight story in six volumes; I like that it wasn't dragged out.
This series was so cute all the way through and was such a delight to read after not feeling like reading and not enjoying manga for about a year. I want to get back into manga this year and that is because of this series (and I'm a sucker for Shōjo). This final volume was the perfect conclusion to this story and it showcased the character growth of Shizu, Tetsu and the ghosts. Plus the artwork is gorgeous.
God, this series fucking slapped. I always got so drawn in every time I picked up a volume and everything from the plot to the characters worked really well. Special shout out to Tetsu, I think he’s a great example of a character where his bad traits are so clearly extensions of his good traits, the ways that he cares for others and neglects himself going hand in hand. It’s about people learning to know and see each other?? That’s the series and it’s good????
