About the author

Noted American playwright Edward Franklin Albee explored the darker aspects of human relationships in plays like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962) and Three Tall Women (1991), which won his third Pulitzer Prize.

People know Edward Franklin Albee III for works, including The Zoo Story , The Sandbox and The American Dream .
He well crafted his works, considered often unsympathetic examinations of the modern condition. His early works reflected a mastery and Americanization of the theater of the absurd, which found its peak in European playwrights, such as Jean Genet, Samuel Barclay Beckett, and Eugène Ionesco. Younger Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel credits daring mix of theatricalism and biting dialogue of Albee with helping to reinvent the postwar theater in the early 1960s. Dedication of Albee to continuing to evolve his voice — as evidenced in later productions such as The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? (2000) — also routinely marks him as distinct of his era.

Albee described his work as "an examination of the American Scene, an attack on the substitution of artificial for real values in our society, a condemnation of complacency, cruelty, and emasculation and vacuity, a stand against the fiction that everything in this slipping land of ours is peachy-keen."

المسرحية بشكل عام مفككة وليس فيها حبكة واضحة هي بمثتبة اسكتشات متفرقة تدور حول نفس الشخصيات والفكرة وأكثر ما يميزها هو الحوار ولعلها كانت بمثابة تجربة كتابة للمؤلف لا غير.

بيثي سميث شخصية العمل الأساسية الغير مجسدة في العمل تمثل انعكاسات العنصرية بجميع صورها في المجتمع الامريكي. لا يوجد قصة ذات مسار محدد مجموعة من المشاهد لممرضة في مستشفي مع أبيها ومع الطبيب والعامل الزنجي تنتهي بمشهد وفاة بيثي سميث في حادث و تلكأ المستقبلين لها في المشفي لأنها زنجية

في مسرحيّة "موت بيسي سميث"، إدوارد ألبي ما كانش بيحكي بس عن موت مغنيّة، كان بيشرح جُرح أمريكا المفتوح وقتها — جُرح اسمه العنصرية، والطّبقية، والنفاق اللي لابس بالطو أبيض.

القصة بتحصل سنة 1937، يوم ما المغنية الأسطورية "بيسي سميث" اتعرضت لحادثة بالعربية. الدم في الشارع، والأنين في الهوا، لكن المشفى الأبيض رفض يستقبلها... لأنها سوداء. والمشفى الأسود ماكانش جاهز. النتيجة؟ ماتت بيسي بين الاثنين.

بس ألبي ما عملش مسرحيته عن الحادثة نفسها. هو استخدمها كرمز. حط مجموعة شخصيّات — ممرضة، طبيب، سواق تاكسي، مغني شاب، وامرأة مش واضحة هويتها — وكلهم قاعدين في صراع داخلي وخارجي، مليان توتر وعنصرية وكبت.

مافيش بيسي سميث حقيقية في المسرحية، لكن وجودها طاغي. زي الشبح اللي بيهيم فوق الكل. الكل بيتكلم عنها، بس محدّش فعلاً يعرفها. وده بالظبط كان مقصد ألبي: أمريكا بتتكلم عن العدالة، عن الموسيقى، عن "القيم"... لكن بيسي ماتت لوحدها، في عربية، بسبب لون جلدها.

المسرحية بتفكك المجتمع الأمريكي، وتورّيك قد إيه العنصرية مش مجرّد كراهية، لكنها نظام كامل بيشتغل زي الماكينة... وبيفرم كل اللي مش شبهه.

What was Albee attempting with this one-act farce? Structurally bland and stunted, thematically tone deaf and bordering on trauma porn for the sake of it. Evoking the name of the late legend to write out his odd fantasies about the depths of evil southern racism just comes off plain weird, and there’s nothing even special about the writing to redeem it. A resounding: WHY?

The idea was certainly worth writing about, but this particular play didn't do it for me. Albee rarely feels pedestrian/rote, but this did. If I wanted to be informed and bummed out, I think I'd just read a larger/longer nonfiction piece on the subject of racism and the healthcare system.

Summary: On the eve of Bessie Smith's death, a white nurse harasses a black orderly. She has been dating an intern at the hospital (who is also white but seems to have more compassion; this is after all 1937). The intern proposes marriage but the nurse turns him down because he doesn't make enough money. When Jack, Bessie's friend, comes into the hospital after an accident, the nurse tells him to leave as it's a white hospital but the intern goes out, alongside the orderly, to help, only to return to say that the woman is already dead. Meanwhile, the nurse is now determined to ruin the intern's career.
Review: Not much to say for this one. I think it was fine. Always depressing reading about racism but I know it's realistic.
