wtf is renowned cartoonist Zapiro's account of the Zuma years in 400 brilliant cartoons and the stories behind them. Zapiro's showerhead - first drawn in 2006 - has become an iconic symbol. Zuma served Zapiro with two lawsuits, totalling R22m, claiming the cartoons had invaded his dignity. And there were many other occasions when Zapiro not only drew the story, he became the story. Zapiro is uniquely positioned to reflect his serious craziness and the crazy seriousness of this bewildering time in our history.
Jonathan Shapiro, born 1958 in Cape Town, is a South African cartoonist, famous as Zapiro, whose work appears in numerous South African publications and has been exhibited internationally on many occasions. He is the nephew of British magician David Berglas and cousin to Marvin Berglas director of Marvin's Magic.
Bizarre. Brilliant. Hearbreaking. This is an accurate and insightful account of how South Africa lost its way in the 21st Century. If it wasn't for voices like Zapiro's all hope would be lost.
I know this is ‘just’ a collection of cartoons but it reads like a book wading through one of the most frustrating, confusing and infuriating times in South African politics. At the time it was almost impossible to keep track of all the machinations so this is a great refresher as a background to the current list of players.
