Updated Review 5/21/25: One of the best reconciliations I have ever read in manga. It was everything I was hoping it would be and really touched my own heart. Excited to read the final volume!
Original Review 6/19/22: I'm calling this the volume you-simply-cannot-put-down-for-any-reason.
What a heartfelt and tearjerking volume!!! Oh my goodness, how I cried reading this!
Yes, it's sad, but even more then that it is deeply beautiful and never imagined that when I started this series, I would be so deeply invested into the lives of two brothers reconciling. But as the series went on and especially these past few volumes, this one delivered in all the ways I have been hoping for. *sobs*
While this definitely is an emotional volume, I feel it goes on the up-and-up and you feel your heart healing and hopeful. (That scene with Riku and Ten was so so so beautiful!)
I really loved the ending and just so thankful I finally read this series! It is such a good one!!
Riku stars in Riku’s book, featuring the formerly interesting Ten, who also used to be the main character. Riku things happen and we’re all asked very politely to care.
There is nothing rational about my reaction to this book nor how much this series as a whole now sets my teeth grinding and I am fully aware of that, which is why I am telling you up front so you can take all this with a supermarket aisle full of salt. I was literally physically agitated reading this volume, so I know it’s a me problem.
The bulk of this story is a massive reunion and I think it’s overwrought to a level that Io Sakisaka might find slightly contrived and it’s all about characters I don’t have any fondness for so it lands with a dull thud. And it takes an excruciatingly long time - it’s like seeing the station in the distance after a six hour train ride and they decide to slow down to a quarter of the speed. It never ends.
Then after some Riku, it’s time for more Riku, and a little more Riku. Where can we send this dynamo next? Riku cures COVID! Riku solves a hostage crisis! Riku at the UN! Riku saves the lost city of Atlantis! Riku in space! Is there anything he can’t do!? The actual answer to this is ‘be interesting’.
Okay, I am done. I made my case about why I no longer like this series in my review for volume 10 - essentially taking the premise and a good heroine in Ten and turning her into this nothing who exists both for and around Riku. That still applies and it still sucks. At no point has Ten’s interest in Riku ever made the slightest lick of sense.
2 stars. I am going to force myself through the last volume, but it is strictly for completion’s sake and not any actual desire. Again, I’d wager that if you were fine with the way the story went in the last couple volumes - and more power to you if you were, I’m jealous you could enjoy it - you’ll have significantly fewer issues and more enjoyment here.
Ah Chiaki!!! My literal favorite character. He's the cutest.
Wow this volume is emotional right from the start. I was really tearing up. I'm so happy that these brothers have talked it out and Rei faced his immaturity. The moment between Riku and Ten was really touching and cute too. Even if it was extremely dramatic for two high schoolers. I like their relationship.
I really loved this one! I feel like it's really addressing questions and coming full circle with the characters. It didn't give me breathless butterflies, but more the feeling of just super heartwarming fullness and completeness. So much love at the end.
Steam: plenty of hugs, kisses and hand holding between Riku and Ten
Short Cake Cake doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. There’s a flip from the first male lead, which can be done well (Fruits Basket & Daytime Shooting Star), but that character has a sudden change to not liking the female lead as much. Both leads have empty connections and end up being the least interesting characters. I’m not sure why this series was localized over series like “Sparkly Lion Boy” or “Love So Life.”

This penultimate volume to the series fed my soul in the best way! The resolution between Riku and Rei was truly so moving to read. The decisions the characters made were genuine, and felt like real life. I am so excited for the final volume to come out soon!
As we near the end of the series, I feel a tad upset that the manga veered the way it did, so much so that the story and characters suffered because of it. It’s just so disappointing that Riku became the centerpiece rather than Ten. What would the series have become otherwise? We’ll never know.
I really enjoyed this series in the beginning, but as it went on, the story and characters aren't gripping anymore. I'm sticking with it for the beautiful illustrations and because there's only one volume left.
big dramatic reunion got me teary eyed (T ^ T)♡ although who the hell thought it would be a good idea to let gramps off the hook? he was absolutely terrible when Rei was a child and they still want to please him/make up. I would be like, HECK NO OLD MAN!!!
I get the criticism of this no longer being Ten’s book - there is a distinct shift to Riku being the main character, which is interesting. I honestly don’t hate it because I just love the focus on male friendship too, especially because Chiaki takes toxic masculinity and smashes it into tiny pieces. also, Ran and Shiraoka are kinda cute together.

Oh my heart!!! So many emotions in this volume. And finally a heart to heart between brothers. And it seems like our girl Ten will get her happy ending. Her and Riku.... I swear he had me crying with his little speech... Also, I can’t forget Chiaki and his man crush on Riku. Haha! It’s too adorable. Everything seems resolved! And the next volume is the last. I’m excited but it’s going to be bittersweet. I fell in love with this series and its characters instantly.... It’s going to be hard to say goodbye!
Next volume is the last, and I am happy and sad about that fact. This story is so utterly beautiful. I am so in love with these characters and am ready to see how it finally ends. It gets a little steamy at the end which I need more of! I love it! The brotherly love is so cute and I am so happy I found this series! So so sweet and good! I highly recommend! Gunna preorder the next volume right now!
A fitting conclusion to the Riku-family drama! Ten is basically nonexistent in what was originally her series, and I'm glad about it. I thought this manga was bland as dirt when it began, but, when it turned telenovela, things got good.
Rei’s apologies finally 🤧 i understand how feeling inferior to Riku has put a barrier between them but this issue could have been resolved much sooner and neither of them would have been as sorrowful and resentful as they were by this point but MISCOMMUNICATION✨
when riku hugged ten >>>
chiaki realizing riku is his one true love is hilarious
The conclusion to the main series while they're still teenagers. I enjoyed the ending. Yes, it's very HEA and that's A-OK with me. I do love how Rei and Riku's sibling relationship evolves as they finally open up to one another.
ummmmm idek what direction this has taken. the brother drama is at the forefront and book kid lowkey said he’s in love with riku? lol ig book kid and ten aren’t ending up together after all…
but omg that ending 0.0
