I have the same problem with this book as all the others. I keep expecting a little bit of growth or change with each new book and I don't get it. Yes, I understand that Montana is from a different world and has a different way of speaking. I also understand that he is going to let idioms and phrases slip at times. Those will happen. He has been there 2 months and it seems as though he is saying more and more of those things that nobody understands. This wouldn't happen. At some point anyone would realize the cultural difference and at least try to blend in a little. Those slips are always funnier when they come less frequently.
I also have a problem with Montana's companions, especially Nikolai. All he does is tell Montana he is an idiot and complains that everything he is doing is wrong. He needs to get better. He needs to listen more and get better. I understand all that and agree. My biggest issue is that at no point have I ever heard Nikolai do any actual teaching or training. Montana also has only been in the world 2 months and has done nothing but fight to keep himself and his people alive. When exactly was this training supposed to happen? How was it supposed to happen? In 3 books I can only remember 2 times that Montana was thanked for what he did. He saved all of the people in this group at least a dozen times and they complain and yell at him for it.
I keep hoping at least some of that will change because I really like the rest of the story. As much as I hate the way Nikolai calls Montana an idiot, I do have to agree that he isn't that smart. Not as bad as Nikolai makes him out to be, but he does do some dumb shit. The least of which is not checking his notifications or assigning his points. When he does ask Nikolai for help with his character build he hardly ever follows the advise. I like how OP Montana has become and he still gets stronger. It also keeps me on my toes with his gear. I think the weapon he picks up will be with him for a long time and level with him and then he either looses it or has to get rid of it. It is hard to get excited about new gear because I have to wonder if he is actually going to keep it. This is completely different from other stories and it is very interesting.
In this book Montana tries to get Nikolai out of prison. In order to do that he goes into the prison and finds a dungeon under the prison that nobody believed was there in order to try and get out. This part was both good an bad.
Anyway, I still like the book and will keep going with the series, though it could be so much better if they just changed a couple of small things.
Eric Ugland continues to bend the tropes in this new installment. What I thought was good in books 1 and 2 was made great this time around and everything I was hoping to get from a GameLit book was delivered, but in a different or interesting way.
Now, there are probably people who like a good ol' dungeon crawl. Since you know, masochists exist and all. But i'm not one them.
Dungeon crawls are slow, boring, dark, repetitive , and that won't make for an exciting book. And well it kinda didn't? This was the worst addition to the series so far. But why did I still give it 4 stars you ask? Because he wrote a dungeon crawl exactly like it should be. And i can't fault him for that. He brought the humor, he brought the gods, the slaying and the skill point hoarding. My gaming cravings are satisfied.
Also our Hero go into some deep existentialist thinking after a Zerg Rush. Which was a nice touch.
**Second read: I still don't like how the only female character (with more than a few lines) is written in this book. Or how the MC is written when thinking of her. ***
The first part of the book did a lot to fix the issues I had with book 2. For example, it made the death at the end of the last book feel less like the butt of a joke and instead had some impact. It was also wonderful to not have characters nag our MC all the time. His "friends" usually says on one hand that he asks too many stupid questions and should shut up and on the other hand that he is too stupid for not asking before doing something. Unfortunately, this soon picked up again and it was just the same thing as in book 1 and 2. It's just not fun to read. The action and adventure were fun though, so I'll check out book 4 when it's out on audio.
I'm sad the next installment of THE GOOD GUYS debuts in February and that I have to wait. This is a series I will return to, instead of so often losing interest after coming into the second or third book. Great length of a book, I tend to like 'em short and the loot whoa'r-nelly'ing makes my inner greed hamster so happy!
Mistakes: none found Plot: This is a short, fast read. The plot is an interesting little dungeon run. Characters: still like the MC. I do get tired of his sworn people not giving him any respect. 7.5/10 I want longer books.
Nice addition to the storyline. If you've been reading the series, you should like this one too, ifyou haven't, you might still like it, as it really doesn't draw on previous books too heavily, so you shouldn't miss a whole lot by picking up with this one.
Thank God this particular part of the storyline is over! Don't get me wrong, I am still enjoying the series, the pace, the humor and the adventure! But I was starting to grow weary of the seemingly endless dungeon BUT mostly of Nikoli's constant berating of our MC dude, Montana! Whew! Now that they are out of the dungeon! Montana is badass! Even though he makes mistakes (who doesn't by the way) his forward momentum is impressive! I look forward to what is next!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Fun enough, though I'm starting to get irritated by some of the stupider decisions of the main character (especially the ending). Why does he not want to see his notifications sooner? Seriously! Also, he is becoming a bit too overpowered and I'm worried it will break the plot, though he is completely ignoring his magical side of development, which is just infuriating.
I basically just inhaled the three books that are out for the series so I think that should be all that needs to be said for how I feel about the story...this series is breezy, fun, and finished far too quickly for my liking. A wonderful read.
Great book! Fun, good monsters and races, leveling and loot without overdoing it, daring rescues with a bit of "no good deed goes unpunished" vibe and great fighting and adventures. Cover sucks, though.
Still the most relatable main character ever I really enjoyed this book. Read it in one sitting and got several laughs out of it which is rare for me. I look forward to the next book!
I am concerned where Montana’s character is going and because I thought that he wanted to give this life a better shot but this book just left me confused. I lost the plot and I don’t know where I am going! Do I keep reading? The first 2 books were so good.. Maybe Spoiler below.....................................................................
and since the baby mimic didn’t get to escape with them.. I wanna see a cool companion monster.. if that’s where we are going.. I don’t know why he picked Warrior and not Guard... or added more points to intelligence or wisdom either.. LOST.. what do I DO!?
Well written story and characters . I am really glad to have found and the twelve parts of this great storyline. I am looking forward to reading the future books as well.
I loved this book. It is hilarious that Montana essentially scared a poor little dungeon so bad it went to daddy Typhon asking for his aid. Just cause he went a little battle crazy and soloed a level.
This series is improving. The main character is less of a moron, and more of a idiot savant. The stats were less repeative and he's still not a well-rounded hero.
I liked the flow of this book much better, though the ending felt odd and rushed. It's about as good as the second book. The book still suffered from some of the same issues of the first two book. Montana is still entertaining and clever, but just has inconsistent moments of being dumb. much less bogged down by long winded descriptions. Only 1 or 2 readings of the character sheet but they still 5-7 minutes segments. Montana is still learning how things work in the game (having read the next 3 books it feels like he will never catch up), people are still silent and sometimes completely mean and mad about him even asking any questions (again, this is an ongoing theme of him getting crap for not knowing things then getting crap for asking about things and usually doesn't get the answers he needs).
One of the issues I had from the first 2 book is both books feel like they should have been combined, or were purposely separated to make 2 books of one book story arc. This book more or less avoids that, but it does end oddly; ie. Montana makes a stupid decision to trust someone he decided he shouldn't chapters before, gets out of a bad situation, then rushes everyone just out of the city. I'll point out that the situation he was in did not warrant having his crew run out of the city like bandits in the night (which is made more clear in the next book as they spend half of it in the city anyways).
Again, the true gem of this audiobook is Neil Hellegers' narration. He reminds me of one of my favored voice actors, Ray Porter, mixed with Tom Hanks. The range of male voices is varied and the female ones are not to bad either
This is too short. I need more hahaha. In reality the book was awesome. A lot was covered and accomplished but I'm hoping that there will be more covered in the next book. The style and skill shown in the book and the series is great. But I think the next book is going to need a bit more detail showing some form of direction and more detail. Seems like it's either one of the other when it needs to have both to really make a difference. I would rate this up there with the other co-authors of litrpg but it seems as if the series is 1 or 2 books being split into 3 or more. Overall it's a great series but needs a bit more volume to make that distinction. Looking forward to the next book nonetheless
If you like LitRPG this series is a must read, this series has everything action and a lot of fun it is very light hearted and funny in a serious way. Follow the adventures of Montana never a dull moment. I love the fact that so far the author publish a book approximately every two months I would prefer every week but that would be asking for a lot. I am hoping this is a long series because the adventures of Montana is truly a lot of fun.
You never quite know what you will find as you read this story. I enjoy how things have an original spin to them using common tropes and ideas. This is fairly well written, without many errors or issues to deal with as you read. The characters are interesting to the point that you not only want to read about the main character but the others as well. This is very well done! Read this!
Great series. I definitely reccomend reading them in order as otherwise thos book will not make sense. This part was more action and less character building than previous ones. It felt like it was setting the stage for the next arc.
While not quite godlike like strength yet, our favorite good guy continues to flex everything to shreds. Punch 1st and questions later. I think he should have enough loot to buy whatever he needs at this point. Can't wait for the next!
A very entertaining dungeon grind but adds very little to the main story line. And the ending was very strange and came out of nowhere. Looking forward to next book, I hope things get back on track.
