A former actor, theatre-director and drama teacher, Deary says he began writing when he was 29. Most famously, he is one of the authors of the Horrible Histories series of books popular among children for their disgusting details, gory information and humorous pictures and among adults for getting children interested in history. Books in the series have been widely translated into other languages and imitated.
A cartoon series has been made of the series of books and was shown on CiTV for a period in 2002.
The first series of a live-action comedy sketch show of the same name was shown on CBBC in 2009 and a second series is due.
Terry is also known widely throughout children and adult reading groups alike for his True Stories series (see below for series list).
He received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Sunderland in 2000. His numerous accolades also include the Blue Peter "Best Nonfiction Author of the Century" Award in the U.K.
I read this when I was a child and It scared the Sh*t out of me. I couldn't sleep and had to sleep with my mom. Good Job, Terry Deary. I owe most of my childhood horrors to you! Well done!
I still remember the story's--and I believe that this quote is from this one or True Horror stories. " THE BOOTS ARE DANCN' ON THE BELT!"
This book legitimately terrified me as a child and I could still recall many of the stories in detail. Reading as an adult it wasn't quite as terrifying but I still enjoyed the stories a great deal. It touches on many aspects of the paranormal and provides good "beginner" explanations for the young aspiring ghost hunter or paranormal enthusiast.
Lost my mind as a child, this is absurdly scary. Too scary for kids. As an adult it’s no less terrifying. At all. Read it again as an adult on a train and was almost sick, I became so scared.
This collection of "True" Ghost stories were okay. 9 short stories in all. I all seemed a little silly to me. It was like a British version of 'Scary Stories' by Alvin Schwartz.
After each short story there was a 'thoughts' section were the author gave the definition of the type of ghost talked about in the previous story, for example, apparition, demon, poltergeist. Then, there is a fact section that talks about where the story got its roots and other example stories similar to the one that was just read.
It was an entertaining read. Not something that I would read again, but enjoyed for the most part.
Well this book is still abit comfusing for me. I read it when i was 16 and im not those kind of girls who scares of everything but kind of gave me the feeling of horror abit( cause i read it at 3am) so this book will tells you stories about ghosts and then gives you both scientific reasons which shows they're not reall and some beliefs which says those stories are as reall as you🙂💔 so if yoyre intrested at knowing more about ghosts i think this book can be a good choice because of its well price and less pages( i read the persian translated one which has only 160 pages)
This book is not just about ghosts - but poltergeists and apparitions too. And being a Terry Deary book, there is a big dollop of healthy skepticism running throughout. He suggests alternative explanations to some cases that are anchored more in fact than fiction; evidence vs supernatural.
From the author of Horrible Histories comes this really engaging and quite spooky book of eight ghost stories. From poltergeists to ghost ships, reincarnation and curses Terry Deary explains the facts behind the phenomena...if he can...
I especially enjoyed a story form the authors own life at the beginning, proving that Deary is not a sceptic. But he does look at the facts fairly and does admit that there have been a lot of fraudsters and lies in the past accounts of ghost sightings.
Some of the stories themselves were pretty creepy and perfect autumnal reading. The illustrations that preface each chapter set the scene perfectly. Interspersed amongst the chapters are fact files of famous ghosts and famous tricksters, even the famous fairy photographs get a mention!
Amongst my favorite accounts included a mummified English woman and a rebel half prince out for revenge but driven away by happiness!
I’m really enjoying this series and, in some ways, this was the best so far in atmosphere and engagement.
I had this book on my shelf for ages and thought now is as good a time as any to read this collection if ghost stories. It actually wasn't too bad a read; quick and easy to get through. The way this book is structured is to tell a series of true ghost stories and then present possible explanations as to what actually happened. Deary separates the book into different types of hauntings and presents case files to provide further credence to each of these encounters. It is up to the reader to decide if these ghost stories are fact or fiction. The two stories I liked the most were 'The Lives and Deaths of Jane' and 'Diary of a Haunting.'
These true story books I still have in great shape after so many years . They so collectible and awesome ! After reading those stories I head sounds in my room or somewhere in apartment and could not sleep for induced fear. After lending to other friends they told the same !?! After stories there is fact or fiction ?' which just helped induce fear with its realism ... Now tho I could say stories are bit week . They are quick read . And that's why I loved them in first place !
It’s a fairly good book dealing with “true ghost stories”. It gives the story itself, the facts surrounding the story and reasons why the story maybe true and why it might not be. Only thing is it’s very short.
Fairly inoffensive anthology of ghost yarns. More camp fireside than abject horror & told from the view of “do you believe in ghosts?” then giving a reasonable rationale for each. Enjoyed it. Too short if anything.
Entertaining book peppered with some useful tips, ghostly thoughts and alternative explanations. The happenings transformed into stories are quite appealing, esp. to younger audiences. Loved the illustrations!
The audiobook was well read apart from the first story which involves the narrator imitating children. It's a good book with some interesting tales and informative linked stories and possible explanations.
