Her mother always told her not to feed stray wolves...

Running a ranch is hard enough, so Makena Laine doesn't need any complications in her life. But the development company that's determined to take her land isn't giving her much choice. They've run off her help, pulled down her fences...and she's afraid they've only just begun.

So when she stops alongside the road to assist a cowboy with a broken-down truck, she isn't looking for more trouble, no matter how gorgeous that trouble is. Ethan Grimmson is bigger than any man has a right to be, doesn't say much, and—if she's honest—he’s also a bit scary. Yet considering that she's in danger of losing her ranch...maybe scary is exactly what she needs.

If so, that's exactly what she's going to get—in the form of a giant werewolf. Because Ethan’s got teeth and claws, and he’s been hunting a long time, trying to track down the murderers who killed his family—until an irresistible scent drags him straight to Makena's ranch. Eventually, he'll have to rip out his heart and leave her behind; but for now, he'll protect her from the vultures circling her land. Except the threat stalking them is bigger than either could have imagined, and is leading to a showdown that might destroy them both...

Kati Wilde is a tight-lipped, loose-hipped woman of indeterminate age and low breeding. Born into a very large family, she now has a very small family (no laws were broken in this transition), and she writes romantic fiction to assuage her darker urge to write Transformers erotica. She lives in Oregon, so most of you are safely far enough away, and has two old cats.

Kati writes the Hellfire Riders MC romance series and will be publishing her first New Adult novel, Going Nowhere Fast, with Berkley later this year.

About Our Series:

The Motorcycle Clubs series is for romance readers who want all the heat and emotion, but who don’t have all of the time. At this time, we are only publishing novellas — our intention is to provide readers with short (yet satisfying) MC romances. Sometimes we might continue one couple’s story over several novellas, but each individual novella will have a satisfying romantic resolution. Because they are short, we focus the stories on the eroticism and romance, and will be building the MC worlds as each series progresses.

Highly entertaining Cowboy/Paranormal (Werewolf ) Romance.
An incredibly sexy, amusing and absorbing tale. Also lots of fun reading.
Ethan and Makena. 💘💝💗
I really do appreciate the way this author is so skilled/successful at combining a sexy and slightly smutty fantasy-like story with a well written story that includes a great plot also.

If you like this full length story by Kati Wilde then I highly recommend reading her novella "The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride" as it is such a fabulous read and the reason I jumped so fast to read this brand new KU release.

I couldn't go on anymore. Just so much extra plot that I did not care about.

The hero left alot to be desired. At the 65% mark he was still in the state of mind of "im gonna leave her but, who knows, maybe ill come back to her? Still haven't made up my mind yet." He also repeated over and over and O V E R again how good the heroine smelled and he didnt know why he was so drawn to her. Bruh, can you write a character any more dense?!?

This is my first werewolf romance book and it is normally not my genre of choice; however, because I like this writer's style, I wanted to try it. Although the writing in the book is pretty good, sadly, I couldn't get into the story and I was quickly bored. Wrong genre for me. I must confess that I just skimmed and scanned the book and read only the romance parts between the hero and the heroine - and now, I feel like a naughty child who ate the potato chips and left the steak on the plate :)

My only experience with werewolves was with the TV series Vampire Diaries. As it seems, I can watch and enjoy paranormal but I cannot read it, maybe because I need the visuals to keep my interest.

Therefore, I am not rating this book, as it's me in this case, not the book.

I liked other books by this author, but this book meandered with too much Telling. Seems to be based on Nordic mythology, shifters, fae or witches but frankly I found them all boring.

What can I say? That wicked sexy book cover lassoed me in to give this new to me author a try. If you are into paranormal werewolf romances, you might want to do so, as well. Not my usual genre, I do dabble in it occasionally. Here’s my take on this one, folks.

Ethan Grimmson has a self-appointed grimsome task. Find and dish out his own brand of werewolf shifter justice to the evil, despicable culprits who murdered his entire family while he was serving his country overseas eleven years ago. Though the trail has gone stone cold, nothing will sway him. Not even the mysterious pull and scent of Makena Laine, a cattle ranch owner, who has a whole heap of sorrow and troubles all of her own. Those of which have good guy Ethan unable to resist the pull of helping her before continuing on with his mission.

The striking similarity in some parts of this main couple’s past had me thinking those bits were too coincidental. But, hey, sometimes you just have to roll with it, right? What you also find here is a whole lot of monologue regarding how Ethan feels and reacts just being within smelling distance of Makena. That’s saying something since he can actually smell her presence long after she’s been somewhere.

Well, everything was kind of fine and dandy for awhile. I loved how Makena seemed to be it for Ethan, though he kept talking of having to move on sooner rather than later. She realized that so was trying to guard her heart. I had high hopes I was really going to get into their romance and the overall multiple murder mysteries lurking in the backdrop.

However, almost midway into it, I found myself stepping neck deep into an overly complicated, too bogged down with way out there, unpronounceable, specific names and details that completed killed my interest. All due to one single, lengthy conversation that opened the door to what has been going on for some time. Well, I just didn’t sign up for the romantic plot to be hijacked to that extent. I shut that door, folks, and moved on to my next romantic read.

Here’s to hoping others enjoy it. The storyline simply went in a direction that wasn’t appealing to me.

Romance Safety Gang:

Title: High Moon, Author: Kati Wilde, Pages: 127, stand-alone, paranormal, good guy/alpha protective werewolf shifter hero whose a cowboy, struggling ranch owner heroine, gory animal killings, tad too many similarities in their past, guards her heart at first, too.

Some reviews complain about the plot of this book—namely that it has one. So... yeah. This book has a plot and if you don't like that sort of thing, I guess you'll be disappointed. But if you're into stories with complications and twists and turns, then this may be your cup of tea. I for one, highly enjoyed it!

Meh. I wanted to like this because I've enjoyed Ms. Wilde's writing in the past, but unfortunately this book fell a bit flat. I mean, it has some hallmarks of a classic insta-love story, and the sex was as dirty talking as I expected.

Unfortunately this was a book that wanted to cram in a novel length plot into a novella and you felt it drag the narrative down. The inner ramblings (how he couldn't stay and she shouldn't trust him) were a bit too repetitious, and just made me want to skim. The time that was spent building the mythology of this particular type of werewolves, while interesting, was exposition heavy, and the ultimate resolution didn't give a great pay off because it was all too easily taken care of.

Basically, while I love full length PNR and short, smutty reads, this tried to be both, and didn't work for me. *shrugs* What can you do? They can't all be gold.

Dnf at 20% I wanted things to happen and after 100 pages and no actual progress I realized it was time to give up. I usually like a slow build but there wasn’t much world building to go off of for 100 pages with this much dialogue. If this was a play I would have been okay with it but inner monologue has recently become something I loathe. I will try to read book 1 and see if I can come back to this book in the future.

Happy reading everyone. If you loved this one where did the story pickup for you ? I was going to skim to the sexy scenes but I don’t really love to read sex unless it’s erotica.

Okay- something has to be incorrect with the book details here. This can not only be 127 pages. If so, it feels like you’re reading triple the amount, and that’s not good.

This was suuuper plot heavy and a bit confusing to follow.. a lot of information dumping thrown in randomly that I had to reread a couple of times to make sense. However!! I did have fun reading parts of this book and I liked Makena’s character. She was fiery.

I don’t know if the other books in this series are related to this story in any way or just deal with other werewolves.. either way, I’m not sure that I’ll continue on.

"So... last night, I learned that I didn't know my mother as well as I thought I did. Maybe I didn't know her at all. Not even her real name." Her voice thickens and she gazes at the mug her hands real hard. "But when she was that person I didn't know, she must have known people like you - the wolfkin - who weren't cursed. And if what Jonas told us is true, that means she upended her entire existence simply because she believed the wolfkin shouldn't be hunted or killed, and that you have the same right to live as the rest of us do. I didn't know that woman, but I knew the one that came after. The one she changed into. And that woman taught me so much."

Her voice thickens again and her eyes sheen with tears, and it's all I can do to keep where I am. Because I can see she's not done.

Swallowing hard, she continues, "One of the things she taught me is that people tend to fear what they don't understand. And that too may people are willing to write off entire groups of other people, simply because of a few bad ones. She taught me that fear and ignorance do a lot of damage to this world - and said that if people would just take the time to get to know each other, really know each other and see each other for who they are, instead of simply caving to fear... the world would be a lot better place. Unless that person is trying to hurt or kill you - that's the only time you shouldn't try to meet them halfway. So are you? Trying to hurt or kill me?"

Nothing could be further from what I want to do. "No," I tell her hoarsely.

She nods, like that's exactly what she already thought. "Then I want to see you as you are, so I can move past ignorance and fear..."

It's official.

Kati Wilde is incapable of writing a bad book.

I went into High Moon expecting a silly shifter romance with all the cowboy cheesiness you could ask for... and instead I got a heart-wrenching, achingly beautiful love story between two strangers that feel hopelessly drawn to one another, but they both have to overcome their own fears and uncertainties and reconsider their own priorities in order to truly be together. And Kati captures that journey with flawless mastery. It's organic and believable and it makes my heart ache.

Makena and Ethan are everything.

This also has a great mystery with a red herring or two and some honest to god surprises, but even though the ultimate big bad is pretty obvious from the jump, Kati weaves her tale in such a way that there are still moments there that'll surprise you or have you holding your breath or fighting back tears.

This woman is such a talented writer, I can't. This book was perfect. I have zero complaints. The development of Makena and Ethan's relationship was perfection, the side characters were all excellent, the conflict was engaging, the climax was tension-ridden, and the spice/sexual tension is exquisite.

So good. So, so good. 11/10 recommend.

"Makena." His tone is hard and flat and halts me in my tracks. "You make sure to bring a real sharp knife out here when you're done drinking the tea."

What? I glance back, and my heart stops. Because he's looking at me - he's looking at me - and the harsh pain on his face matches the agony tearing through my chest.

"You bring a knife," he repeats with crushed gravel in his voice. "So that when you're done cutting off my nose, you can gouge out my eyes, so I'll never see your smile or the sun shining through your hair. Then you better start in on my ears, so I can't hear you laugh or that sound you make in your throat when I'm kissing you. And don't forget to slice out my tongue, so I can't taste your sweetness or tell you how damn amazing you are. Then you'll need to chop off my fingers - or better yet, just flay every inch of my skin - so I can't ever feel you against me again. Maybe after all that, it'll be easy to go."

My tears spill over, and I shake my head. "Ethan - "

Except he's not done. Stepping closer, he growls softly, "But it still wouldn't be. So you'd have to get to my brain, just scoop it out, because I damn well know there's no woman in the world for me but you, and that your scent doesn't have a fucking thing to do with it. And when you're finished with that..." He captures my hand, brings it to his chest, where a thundering beat pounds beneath my palm. "You make sure to carve out my heart, Makena. Because as long as it's beating, I will love you. I'll love you so much that leaving will always kill me."

4 werewolfy stars!

description

“She skims her fingersbover the edgebif my bottom teeth and I can't fucking help myself. I flick my tongue against her fingertips for a quick taste. Het flavor bursts through me and I can't stop my soft, hungry growl. Makena freezes. Not in fear this time. Instead the scent that blooms is hotter, sweeter. Arousal.”

I was in the mood for some werewolvy stories and who's better than Kati Wilde to feed the hunger. High Moon was recommended to me by my J/P group friends and this book really stood to all the praising it got. Ethan and Makena's story was outstanding with lots of suspense, heat and sizzling chemistry.

“A man who doesn’t stay in one place shouldn’t kiss as if he’s holding everything he’s ever wanted in his arms. As if he’s making a promise.”

So if you're into shapeshifters with a heart of gold and a bidy to day for then High Moon is you book and Ethan is definitely your man.

I loved this book. And I gave it 5 stars because as a shifter romance Kati Wilde fkn delivers. The characters were complex and feisty as hell. Much better than the typical smell mate, find mate, fuck mate bullshit you get with these: This has a legitimate mystery and the chemistry between main characters was electric⚡️

3.5 stars. Shifter romance with some mystery thrown in - although the mystery was fairly predictable. I still enjoyed it for the most part, although I do think this could have been slightly shorter, and I’m not at all a fan of novellas usually.

This is one of two audiobooks that this author has, and they are both on hoopla, yay!

Safe; no virgins, no clue about heroine but hero seemed like he was in manwhoreland until he first smelled the heroine (three years before the start of this story) and then he stayed celibate. No cheating, no om/ow drama, no scenes with om/ow.

Okay, I’ve never read a werewolf book before now, this really isn’t my genre of choice. Despite that, I enjoyed this story. The supernatural stuff required some suspension of disbelief but I was able to buy into most of it. And the love story underneath was gorgeous. Strong characters really helped, as did the alternating first person POVs, their inner turmoil filled in the gaps where the main plot was a little too pat.

Makena and Ethan

He could smell her as soon as he hit town but he had no plans to find her. She found him though on the side of the road by his broken truck. She helped him and then he got away as soon as possible. His plans were to find the information he needed and then leave town. Plans changed when he found out she was having trouble, someone was trying to run her off her land.
Turns out they have a lot in common.

Ethan is hired by Makena. Then she finds out what he is and what her parents were.

Good story that kept the mystery right to the end. The characters were good and the mystery was intense. What I didn’t care for was the tension (not sexual tension) was cranked up so high then They start having sex and for 25% of the book there’s no mention of the story, the threat to Makena and her ranch. It felt like a good story was written and then the author remembered there needed to be sex so she inserted it all into the third quarter of the book.

Well, High Moon was something else... It pulled me into a world of supernatural that truly fascinated me with its complexity and originality.
Even though there were some things that I wished ended up differently—more unresolved so there could be another books about these characters—I loved every bit of it. It had fun moments (some were absolutely hilarious), dramatic plot-twists, exciting revelations and of course a lot of interesting mystical and occult information that complimented the story perfectly.

I received a free copy of this book and gave it an honest review.

Probably the first Kati Wilde book I didn't love. This story was longer than the other books I have read by her. I wished it was a bit shorter. There was a side plot in this story that took too much from the actual romance. I might revisit this story later.

Cover love! It's a real thing. I caught sight of the cover and title and then had to read the blurb. That to was an all-systems go for me. I had never read/listened to any books by the author, but now I was going to sling my rope around this book and have at it.

High Moon is the second in the Werewolf and Shifter Romance series. It read easily as a standalone which is good because I didn't realize it was part of a series until after I finished.

High Moon opens with Ethan Grimmson arriving in a small Idaho town looking for answers to his family's murder. They were wolfkin and powerful fighters and yet someone shot them all with no resistance. He was away in the military and came home to find them all gone. Revenge burns inside him as well as caution because he suspects a big group is somehow targeting the shifters because others have been hunted and killed in the same manner. But, alongside his pursuit for answers is his resistance to the tantalizing scent of a human female in this town. His survivor's guilt means he can't be distracted- he can't be happy when his family is dead and he wasn't there for them, right? His keen wolfkin nose takes him right where he is most reluctant to be, but this woman who is his match is in some deep trouble of her own.

Makena Laine is the owner of a small ranching operation that was barely making ends meet and that was before some big organization starts muscling in and won't take no when she won't sell her land or be driven off by their antics. Something is off about Ethan, but she needs a ranch hand who will stick when the going gets tough and he is that. The attraction is off the charts hot between them, but she must guard her heart because he is crystal clear that he won't stay and he has his own goals that don't include her. But, sometimes fate finds a way even if it brings more than she could ever have imagined when the truth comes out about her past and who and what Ethan really is.

High Moon set up quite the ambitious plot. It was both a well done western romance suspense and paranormal romance all rolled into one fabulous story. I love both and thought I had struck gold when I realized this was a book that brought them all together. It could have been ponderous or even confusing, but it was not. It did get long and wow, can't believe I'm saying this, but the sex got to be tedious in the third part of the book. I mean, I loved this pair together and loved seeing them get sexy, but hey folks, there's a suspense element going on and they seemed to have forgotten for a time. And, I wanted to swat Ethan for being so stubborn about sticking to his plan to leave Makena which didn't help her with her issues about him being attracted to her scent. Werewolf, hun, get over it it. But, the pair of them got things straightened out and things got pretty action-packed for a sensational last quarter.

I enjoyed both narrators voices though I did have to listen at a slightly faster speed. Erik Bloomquist was not new to me and I've enjoyed his work before. I like he deep yet versatile voice that captured Ethan's personality well. Amelie was also great at Makena's point of view and her voice was also flexible for all the characters both male and female. They did great taking turns with the chapters and though I usually have trouble with being distracted by hearing characters speak from two different voices, I didn't. Both are narrators I would listen to again.

So, all in all, my gamble on cover love into a new author and series went better than well. I enjoyed Kati Wilde's take on the paranormal world and the way she tied it in with a suspense plot in a contemporary western setting. Those who enjoy spicy paranormal romance should definitely give this a go.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well hello Kati Wilde, I've missed you. Cowboy romance is not my normal genre jam, nor is were-para, but I do love Kati's writing so I made an exception. Happy I did because this book was perfect for me right now after a steady diet of YA and thrillers over the past few months. Strong plot, smart characters, and a creative mythology made this one a winner for me. It was fun, engaging, and definitely spicy. Oh, and the heroine is racially diverse, which was incorporated naturally into the story but didn't drive it or define it, which was nice. Kati is exceptionally good at writing very sexy characters and scenes joined with a real and developed story. I've enjoyed her stories across multiple genres (contemporary, mc) and now paranormal. 4.5 stars.

Confusing

This book wasn't as good as some of the other Kati Wilde books I've read previously. It was a bit confusing with all the talks of werewolves and the no scents of some humans. I skipped through most of the confusing paranormal stuff so I could just figure out what happens at the end.

I really enjoyed this up until the the mc's started having sex. It just felt like it was trying a little too hard to be racey and sexy. And just got icky/boring to read at parts. But I enjoyed the werewolf/wolfkin lore set up. The universe, the plot and even the mc's outside of that issue.

This shifter romance was recommended to me and for that I am glad because this was exceptionally well written. It didn't come off as cheesy in any way. Strong characters, a plausible storyline, and packed full of mystery. Ill definitely be looking at more from this author as I really liked her writing style.
