Dying for a Living #1-7

Dying for a Living: The Complete Series

Rate this book
This complete boxset includes all seven of the "Dying for a Living" novels:

Dying for a Living — Book 1
On the morning before her 67th death, it is business as usual for agent Jesse Sullivan: meet with the mortician, counsel soon-to-be-dead clients, and have coffee while reading the latest regeneration theory. Jesse dies for a living, literally. Because of a neurological disorder, she is one of the rare people who can serve as a death surrogate, dying so others don't have to.

Although each death replacement is different, the result is the same: a life is saved, and Jesse resurrects days later with sore muscles, new scars, and another hole in her memory. But when Jesse is murdered and becomes the sole suspect in a federal investigation, more than her freedom and sanity are at stake. She must catch the killer herself—or die trying.

Dying by the Hour — Book 2
Jesse Sullivan and Ally Gallagher are famous thanks to their recent kidnapping and brush with death. They have scars, but they’re breathing, and that’s more than the other victims can say.

Yet while they try to settle back into their routine, saving lives through Jesse’s rare ability, neither can quite shake the feeling that the danger hasn’t truly passed. Then another death replacement agent goes missing, and Jesse may be the only one who can find her.

Dying for Her — Book 3
James T. Brinkley was honorably discharged from the military after a fatal mistake changed his life—and took another.

As an agent, Brinkley has devoted his life to protecting the vulnerable while trying to atone for his own sins. At the center of his quest for redemption lies Jesse Sullivan, a young woman whose past, present, and future depend on the decisions he makes now. One wrong move and he’ll deliver her right into the hands of the sadist killer who hunts her.

Dying Light — Book 4
Jesse Sullivan’s father is a sadistic murder with plans to rule the world. Given his ability to control minds and teleport at will, it seems his dark vision is coming to fruition. All that stands in his way is Jesse.

Yet no matter how badly he has hurt her and the ones she loves, Jesse can’t seem to forget he is her father. She must somehow forget the man she remembers from her childhood and see him for the monster he truly is.

And she almost can…until he offers her the one thing she can’t refuse.

Worth Dying For — Book 5
Jesse Sullivan's father commands a dark and terrible army under the guise of beloved church leader. Jesse and her friends must hide deep undercover for fear of arrest or murder by his faithful followers. Their every move brings risk of discovery.

And when your enemy can control minds and teleport at will, there isn't a single place in the world where you can hide...

Dying Breath — Book 6
Maisie Caldwell knows she won’t live to see her seventeenth birthday. Her mother and sister are locked in a war over the world, and Maisie is stuck between them. She must decide if she will join her sister Jesse’s cause and save the world, even if that means betraying her mother.

Jesse needs to find her father’s body and finish him before he can resurrect. If she succeeds she will save millions, if not billions, of lives. But first, Jesse must defeat the woman protecting him. Maisie’s decision will make or break all they’ve worked so hard to protect.

Dying Day — Book 7
Jesse Sullivan has defeated her father and saved the world from his dark machinations. But as the beloved face of The Unified Church, his death has made him a martyr and now his murderer is public enemy number one.

But it isn’t the countless government agencies and freelance assassins who want Jesse’s head that she should fear. It is the powerful entity who’s come to reclaim the world she has stolen from him.

hard to finish

I don't think I have ever completed a book set with such an unlikable lead character. Hard to finish - most interesting characters not explored.

Action packed, romance and unexpected twists

One of the best book series I’ve ever read. And the main character is bisexual along with having a female romance interest which is great because it’s rare to see in amazing books like this one. The books have so much depth and unexpected twists that I couldn’t stop reading. The characters were easy to love. Especially when they were sassy and sarcastic.

Un-put-down-able

I'm so very glad I bought this as a box set, as a few chapters in to the first book I knew I needed to see the arc through. Not all the characters are loveable, but they are all very human.
When trying to summarize the 7 books for my husband, he suggested that it sounded a little religious, but after thinking on this, it is definitely more humanist. These books cover the gamut of human existence, in all its fallible, debauched, pure, wondrous ways.

The series leaves you with questions about the direction of your own life, while also telling a gripping story of love through time and space. The elements of the Death Replacement narrative showcase our species in ways that echo the current direction of the world, while also opening up possibilities.

A great read from a fantastic author, with very few typographical errors.

Absolutely spectacular and a better ending than I ever hoped for. There is still so much heartbreak in the final book, but it was all worth it. This serious is a must read.

A great series to binge.

This series has good writing, relatable and personable characters, and an engaging plot. I found my self wandering a little during a few scenes, but for the most part the author does a good job keeping you interested. Read this series if you enjoyed House of Night or the Animorphs series.

What an amazing story! At the beginning you think certain things will happen, but I can promise you'll never realize where it's going till it's too late. Kory is brilliant and imaginative and really brings these characters alive! I would love to see this as a movie or a series!

Dying

A new way to portray zombies. Alive then dead for a bit. Alive again. I like the way this story is told.

I couldn't get into the storyline! Perhaps It would have worked with less books and more attention to the plot. However it is a perfect read when you don't want anything too taxing.

I'm very glad I got the Series Bundle, because the story gets even more interesting and twisted as it progresses to the Apocalyptic ending in Book 7 (as in "an unveiling or unfolding of things not previously known and which could not be known apart from the unveiling".
Jesse died in a barn fire she set to kill her abusive stepfather and herself. When she awoke two days later, Brinkley was there to recruit her for a job in the Federal Bureau of Regenerative Death (FBRD). That is where all the lucky people with NRD work as death-replacement agents (the unlucky ones are persecuted). Now Jesse's job is "dying for a living" to revive dead people (before their soul leaves their body) and to die in their place. After a time, she comes back to life, suffering rigor mortis and other side-effects of her death. Why would anyone object to such a valuable skill, especially in conjunction with the Analysts of necro-Magnetic Phenomenon (AMPs) who can predict someone's death to a 24-hour period? That is, besides the military, the government, the Church, the FBRD and people fearful of zombies?
Dying for a Living Book 2, Dying by the Hour, sees the return of the characters from Book 1: Jesse, Ally, Brinkley, Lane, Gloria, Rachel and Gabriel. This book sees the characters suffer painfully from repeated attacks by Caldwell and his minions. Why is Caldwell trying to kill them? New information is revealed, but much still remains unknown. Who can be trusted? What are the various agendas of the many players?
Dying for a Living Book 3, Dying for Her, starts about a year before the big showdown in Book 2 and two months after the episode in the Church cellar in Book 1, but flashbacks to 2003 when Brinkley first starts investigating some strange cases. This book fills in a lot of the history and background of Brinkley, Jackson and Eric Sullivan/Timothy Caldwell. This is Brinkley's first-person viewpoint after he talks with Gloria Jackson and gets his death day prediction. Then a lonely Thanksgiving as he thinks about his impending death. Flashback to working in 2003 when he first heard about Eric Sullivan and his daughter Jesse. As he investigates, we get more and more background on him and his guilt, and about Eric, Danica and Jesse Sullivan. Brinkley counts down the weeks to his death later in 2013 between flashbacks to 2003. He is mercilessly taunted by Caldwell, who will be the agent of his death in the near future. The book ends at the moment of Brinkley's death as he "dies for her".
Dying for a Living Book 4, Dying Light
Book 4 picks up about 2 months after Book 3. Jesse and Ally are trying to survive an encounter with Jason, trapped in a burning building with no way out. Except out the window and down 34 stories. Ouch! Jesse dies again. I advise paying attention to the chapter heading that gives the Point of View; first-person switches from person to person. Ally has insisted that she and Jesse help Jeremiah save the orphans. Gabriel shows Jesse choices, confusing and frightening, for the future of the Earth. Caldwell explains what has to be done to prevent a looming cataclysm, but can he be trusted? Many questions still need answers.
Dying for a Living Book 5, Worth Dying For,
Book 5 picks up New Year's Eve, with Jesse, Ally, Gideon, Maisie and Rachel. They have a plan for taking down Caldwell. Again, I advise paying attention to the chapter heading that gives the Point of View; first-person switches from person to person. Gloria and Monroe, another partis, join them in the effort to end Caldwell's quest for power as the top apex. Things don't go according to plan. The book rolls inexorably to a Shakespearean tragedy-like ending: many people die. But it's a cliff-hanger, with two acts left.
Dying for a Living Book 6, Dying Breath
Book 6 picks up immediately at the end of Book 5. Jesse must finish off Caldwell before he recovers and kills her. The already high tension mounts as the climactic apotheosis nears. Jesse finally makes her decision that Gabriel has been waiting for.
Dying for a Living Book 7, Dying Day
If you've read through Book 6, you're not going to stop here. Keep going! It gets even better.
It's started: Armageddon, Apocalypse, End of Days, whatever. Jesse and Gabriel are at the Convergence Point, located at the South Pole, guarding the Gate. They are fighting off Caldwell's Angel, Michael, and his minions, plus the human forces sent to arrest (or preferably kill her). Ally, Maisie, Gloria, Nikki and Winston are at Jeremiah's refuge. The tension mounts as Jesse and Gabriel battle Michael and his angelic (or whatever they are) host for control of the Gate at the Convergence Point. The action goes at a furious pace until the final apotheosis. Be sure to read the epilogue.

Dying for a Living: The Complete Series (Boxset) contains all seven books in the Dying for a Living series by Kory M. Shrum. It is a very original ‘zombie’ story- an urban fantasy with plenty of action, adventure, mystery, agendas, a quest of sorts, danger, family, friendship, high stakes, suspense, tension, secrets, deception, politics, religion, intrigue, drama, kidnapping, a game of cat and mouse, time running out, gripping developments, gritty/raw scenes, and much more.
I developed an addiction to Ms. Shrum’s stories when I stumbled onto her Shadows in the Water series -> where one book led to two, which then led to me devouring the whole series, back-to-back (11 books) in a matter of days. As there’s a wait for the twelfth book in that series to be released, I needed a ‘fix’ of more of her storytelling, so I went searching for more, discovering a wealth of stories to choose from, and ultimately choosing this series to dive into, before I go on to more.
I really enjoyed this series, but I think if I had not read Shadows in the Water first, my rating would be a bit higher, as the Shadows series has set the bar extremely high. So, if you are interested in Ms. Shrum’s work, I suggest starting here with the Dying for a Living series, before you embark on any other of her work/s.
Jesse Sullivan has Necronitic Regenerative Disorder, a neurological disorder which means that a person can die, but won’t stay dead. But don’t call her a Zombie, because that’s considered rude. The term zombie brings images of mindless, rotting, animated corpses- which is anything but what Jesse and the other NRD positive people are/look like. They look like ‘normal’ humans, just with the ability to ‘come back to life’. Discovering she had this ability had its own trauma, but ultimately led Jesse into the death replacement industry, where she gets paid to die for her clients- ensuring their life is not cut short – so when the story starts, Jesse has already ‘died’ dozens of times. Things take an interesting twist, which I won’t go into here, as I really don’t want to spoil it for you- suffice to say that there was a lot of intense, action-packed developments that made for an engrossing read.
Each book in this series follows on from the previous one, picking up where the other left off- building a much bigger picture as they go- so they really need to be read in the correct sequence, to fully appreciate the books/series- and prevent any kind of confusion. The books are available individually if you wish, as well as in Boxed Sets- which is great value for money.
The Series consists of:
-Dying for a Living (Book #1)
-Dying by the Hour (Book #2)
-Dying for Her (Book #3)
-Dying Light (Book #4)
-Worth Dying For (Book #5)
-Dying Breath (Book #6)
-Dying Day (Book #7)

So, if you are after a highly original urban fantasy series to sink your teeth into, this might just be what you are looking for!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Kory M. Shrum!

I just finished this epic adventure. I can’t, and don’t want to, say anything negative about this series. It’s possible that the author could have written the series in 5 or 6 books, but then too much of the little things that endeared the characters to me would be lost. Jesse was a bit of a snarky person, but she had such a caring heart. Some authors try to make a strong female protagonist, but the snarky ness comes off as bitchiness. Not with Jesse. And Ally, her childhood best friend made me miss my childhood best friend, who I still love but don’t see enough of. Their little group, which I won’t mention by name here, are the most loyal team ever. All of the characters felt like real people. It took me longer than usual to read, but each time I picked up where I left off, I, an elderly person, could still remember who was who, because the author was so good at making them real to me. I get a bit disgusted if I see errors in sentence structure, or other editing errors, but I don’t remember seeing any. I highly recommend this series.

Enchanting Apocalyptic Thriller

I read the first book in this series some time ago, so when the entire series came up I knew I had to read it all. This series is wonderful and horrific all at the same time. The story line is fantastic and fascinating. Characters are three-dimensional with so much depth The entire story from beginning to end is full of excitement and energy, full of emotion.

Wow! what a whirlwind of a story - the author introduces Jesse and Ally in the first book, then gradually introduces more and more characters in books 2 and 3 - book 3 was a bit confusing to me until I got to the rest of the books and then it all came together - book 7 is an ending that I could not have imagined after reading book 1. The author spins a fantastic story and shows a great deal of imagination - I loved the stories within the story.

A great series for 20something readers. Fresh and breathless, a lot of action, but even though she writes from different characters perspectives, the characters have no major differentiation and sound much the same. I enjoyed it as a light read. No surprizes, interesting premise of someone able to die for another. Last three books lost their way with that and concentrated more on moral issues of world wide angst and romance.

A good read but too many in the set. It felt like it went on and on as I read it on my kindle 3 days a week. I know how hard it is to write a novel but please grammar check! There is an easy way to figure out if you should use me or I. If you want to say She cast a spell on Jesse, Gideon and I (which is wrong) just take out the other people and see who she would cast a spell on.
