A shape on the floor was lying where there should have been no shape, and gave me a start. Instinctively I pulled back, but then I tried to focus on it. It appeared to be a person. I looked closer, and saw that it was Bob.
I knelt down. I’d never seen a dead body up close before, but it really looked like he was dead.

And then I heard a noise behind me.

What does a software designer do when a coworker is murdered, and he is the prime suspect? He attempts to figure out who did it, even though he has no idea how to go about solving a murder.
And while solving the murder might get him out of trouble with the police, it might get him into even bigger trouble with the actual culprit.
