Fresh off the brink of an all-American corporate disaster, Business Solutions, Inc., is launching a new, ill-advised venture north of the border. But as executives pin their hopes and bonuses on a hastily planned Canada partnership, a shocking shakeup at the top threatens not only BSI’s expansion but its legacy and future.
Just as Will Evans hits his groove as BSI communications director and potential love interest for coworker Anna Reed, he’s booted out of his comfort zone. Thrown into the Canadian expansion, he’s forced to navigate a bumbling tech startup, worldly new colleagues, and Anna’s underhanded ex. Back in Minneapolis, Anna is losing her sense of purpose—and maybe her mind—as she juggles an exploding workload, her complicated office romance, and new anxieties about her long-buried past. She also might be the only thing left standing between exec Lyle Kirkland and his most devious plot yet.
As employees are distracted by slapdash plans, technology fiascos, and pirate seminars, Will and Anna must race against the clock to save BSI—and themselves. But is there time to change the course of companies so set in their ways? Or are some greedy schemes too deep and deceitful to be stopped?
Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss spent two decades careening through corporate America and barely lived to write about it. As company journalists, speechwriters, and C-suite advisors, they stockpiled insider stories and cautionary tales. Both live near Minneapolis where they own a communications agency, speak to groups of all sizes, and share their perspectives in publications like the Washington Post. Operation Clusterpuck is their second novel.
Reading this book is like getting a master's degree in corporate communications, without all the expense and pain of getting a master's degree. And with more laughs and romance. Rock and Voss follow up the success of BS Inc. with another tale from the corporate tower in downtown Minneapolis. Cube-dwellers Anna and Will are trying to keep company with each other while keeping their company from going down the drain. You don't need to have read the earlier book to enjoy this one, but you should buy and read that one too.
There aren’t enough novels set in corporate life. Well, enter Operation Clusterpuck by Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss. Basic plot: Business Solutions, Inc. (BSI) has been hit with a tragedy and scandal, which threatens its legacy. Can it be saved?
Rock and Voss layer humor with deeply emotional situations--and plot twists that keep the reader engaged. They genuinely pay homage to the quirkiness of behind-the-scenes corporate life. Fully rendered characters (every type of person you’ve seen or pictured in corporate life) exposed to heightened circumstances, add to the story’s dramatic action.
Central characters Anna and Will are beautifully drawn guides for the story’s arc. Anna’s backstory, and the specificities of, and balancing act of being a woman in the corporate world, is particularly endearing. And she’s a badass! Will, too, is complex in his balance of ego and sensitivity. As a pair, called to duty to uncover the truth about shady dealings meant to take down their company, they are a delight. I’m old enough to remember the fabulous TV program, Moonlighting; the tone of this novel reminds me of it: a charming and well-paced rapport between Anna and Will.
A fulfilling read that engages ones thoughts about her of his legacy, with lots of complications, and a well-earned, heartfelt ending.
