Sparky is a newly-hatched dragon with a he can't breathe fire. Not wanting to stand out from all the other dragons, he leaves the nest and sets off on an adventurous journey to solve his problem. Finally, he meets Nicky, who is determined to help him on his quest to find the secret of fire. Will Sparky ever discover how to breathe fire?
What a delight to discover this original and imaginative children’s fantasy story that is entertaining while embracing important ideas about difference, resilience and acceptance. Just like every child and many adults, Sparky must learn to accept and work with his limitations and his abilities alike.
The characters in this story are delightful, with Nicky and her grandmother leading the way in showing others that prejudgment and first impressions are unreliable, and in demonstrating openness and acceptance of Sparky while others show fear and distrust.
The illustrations are charming and highly engaging, and thus add another level of interest and involvement in the story for the children who comprise its target audience.
This is a great book for both independent young readers and for families to read together. As such, it would make a delightful addition to school, town and home libraries.
Febra the dragon lays four eggs. Three are various shades of yellow, but one is dull grey and much smaller. Against the advice of the other dragon mothers, Febra takes extra special care of it, but Sparky is different. He never grows really big, he’s purple – not red and green – and he can’t breathe fire, only sparks, which is how he gets his name.
The story of Sparky shows so much – that being different is acceptable – everybody is good at something – friendship is important – and Sparky’s journey to independence is fascinating and will enchant any child. The human family could so easily be their own.
For those too young to read, there are beautiful illustrations on almost every page. For beginners, the font is easy to read, and older children, and the adults in their lives, will learn from its subtle message.
I think I can safely say that this book has been a hit with my children, the four year old has asked to be read it three times in a row, the six year old is now reading it for a fourth time, and both have demanded to know what Sparky does next.
Sparky is a cute purple dinosaur, learning some valuable lessons on not giving up when something is difficult, but also that sometimes the best thing to do to learn a new or difficult skill is to just have some fun. It's a lovely message for little ones, especially early in their schooling.
I've especially appreciated being able to use it as a conversation starter with the 6 year old who has some speech issues, and finds it a struggle not being quite like the other children in the class.
This is a beautiful children's story. A tale of love, acceptance, and individuality. Millie Slavidou's dragon, Sparky, is a touching and inspiring character. Sylva Fae's illustrations are wonderfully done and engaging. This lovely tale is suited for all ages. This is a dragon your children will love!
