This book is the sequel to Scream Blue Murder, and while it could easily be read as a stand-alone, I strongly recommend reading that one first, primarily because it’s a fantastic thriller, but also because this one has some serious spoilers for it, that would remove much of the tension if you wanted to read it later. I will confess that I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much, but it is still a solid 4 star novel by an accomplished writer.

Set about six months after the events of SBM, Mike has physically recovered and got his head sorted, dealing with his alcoholism and emotional issues by doing some extreme camping. When he receives a call from LA to say his ex-wife’s new husband’s nephew has gone missing, he doesn’t hesitate to go and help, recruiting his former colleague from the marines Terry as before. A simple missing persons case turns sinister when the young man’s car is found close to the famous town of Roswell, and they soon discover that they are not the only ones hunting him...

This is very different to the first book in several ways. While SBM (I’ve still not worked out the significance of the title) was about a man on the run, defending himself against fake charges and people who want to kill him, here Mike and Terry go in as the aggressors, heavily armed and willing to kill to find their man. This sat a little uncomfortably with me as in the beginning they didn’t actually know who or how bad the baddies would turn out to be. Lots of people die and he’s all “oh well that’s a shame, too bad”...

I’ve read a few series now which have started in the UK then moved to the USA in subsequent books, which I don’t mind, and I assume the authors are keen to break in to the American market, but they need to decide if they are writing in British or American English as I found the mash-up a bit jarring. Aside from this, I like Forder’s writing style which has just the right amount of description and scene-setting without that becoming a distraction.

The plot got quite complicated with a lot of different moving pieces and I found it hard to remember who was who at times, thank heavens for the “search” button on my Kindle. It did all come together nicely at the end even if it was all a bit convenient. There’s no great twist, it’s not that kind of book. There’s lots of action, explosions and gun-toting, and no, there aren’t any aliens.

Overall this was a good follow up and I hope that Mike and Terry will be back.
My thanks to the author, Bloodhound Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review, and my apologies for missing the publication deadline. Cold Winter Sun is available now.

I love Tony Forder’s open chapters in his books, they always leave me stunned. I was shocked and totally left with the ‘What the hell just happened there’ sort of thoughts within a couple of minutes. I can’t start what I can’t finish so I was going to spend a pretty unpredictable afternoon with a couple of real tough cookies, Mike Lynch and Terry Cochran, two ex military mates that watch each others backs when the need calls for it and it was certainly shouting now.
After a brief phone call from his ex-wife, Lynch and his bestie find themselves on a plane to the USA to find his wife’s husband’s missing grown up nephew. What begins as a simple missing person case soon escalates into so much more, including gangsters, the government and area 51. One thing that I can say for the pair is I love how they just take everything in their stride. It is more a mission than an investigation as the two of them think as one because they had been together so long in the forces.
This story really kept me on my toes as they followed suspects and people followed them. There were good guys after the bad guys and bad guys after bad guys. You just know when it all comes together there is going to be one hell of a shindig! I love Lynch and Cochran together with their magnetic attraction to chaos as it makes everything so unpredictable for the story and every other character that they come across!
I got so I was like the bloke in the beginning of the book. I wanted answers! And what answers they were. I thought aha! but no there was more and more. Brilliant.
Lynch is such a super cool dude, logical and so bloody clever. I really can’t wait until he starts calling in the favours he has banked from this and the last book. A super read with a conclusion I hadn’t worked out and with the luxury of a glimpse into his personal life.

This story can be read as a standalone but I do recommend you go and read Scream Blue Murder where we are introduced to Mike Lynch. Scream Blue Murder is such a great book you won’t wanna miss out:)

We meet again with Mike while he’s having a break from life. He needed it after what he went through last year. If you haven’t read book one you won’t be lost as the author does explain what happened. A phone call from his ex wife has him and his friend Terry rushing to LA to track down her new husbands nephew Vern.

If you’ve read anything by this author you’ll know it won’t be as easy as it looks. Mike gets more than he bargained for when he looks into the disappearance of Vern. I was mentally putting the pieces together as I was reading but I didn’t take into consideration the twists the author may throw at me.
Although there are quite a few characters in this story I found it easy enough to keep track of who was who.

This is another brilliant story by this author. I recommend you go read all his previous books as they are so good. I now wait impatiently for his next release.

What a fantastically atmospheric opening to this fast paced, heart pounding thriller.
Many twists and turns, full of emotionally charged scenes and a storyline that explores the Roswell incident. I love it when an author builds a story round an identifiable real life event ... and Roswell must be one of the biggest conspiracy theories around.
I love the relationship between the two main characters (Mike Lynch and Terry Cochran). But, the thing I liked best was that the characters were emotional as well as hard headed, the plotting was tight and the subsidiary characters held their places in the novel with aplomb. Cold Winter Sun isn't the first in the series, but I read it without reading the others and found that enough backstory was provided to fill in the blanks, but not so much that i didn't want to go and read the others. I will be catching up on more Tony Forder.

GNab Cold Winter Sun is a riveting read - and Mike and Terry are a special kind of soldiers, ones who owe their loyalty to each other and their allegiance to the side of right. I very much enjoyed their interactions and the way they were able to read one another without words. This was a tight, well paced tale with interesting protagonists and mile-a-minute action. Our Brits find their way to LA and then New Mexico as they search for a missing young man, the nephew of Mike's ex-wife Donna's new husband Drew, stepdad to his daughter Wendy. And they find themselves tangled up in cyber crimes, grand theft, torture, and murder. They find themselves working for or against Roswell police, one County Sheriff, the FBI and possibly Reservation cops as well before it is all over. And what about the little green men in their UFO's? I will have to find and read Scream Blue Murder - and I very much hope to visit with Mike and Terry once again in the future. Please bring them back.

I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Tony J. Forder, and Bloodhound Books in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

Cold Winter Sun is an excellent crime thriller, and a tribute to my personal stomping grounds - Otero, Lincoln and Chaves Counties, New Mexico. It was a special treat to find local haunts in this British novel. I hope you were able to spend some spring joy and summer heat with us as well!

Mike Lynch and his best mate Terry are helping Mike's ex-wife, well actually his ex-wife's new husbands family...

So, Mike and Terry, they have a great dynamic and have got each other's back. They have worked together over several years and the camaraderie and bond become apparent as they now enter a new case. This case has emotional implications for Mike as he sees his daughter settled in a new life, with a stepdad that can provide for her. It is a chance for Mike to explain some of the demons he has personally had to battle.

Now to the plot, yes I don't give anything about these away. I will say it is very atmospheric and action-packed. It is a plot that had me guessing as there were a couple of directions I could see it potentially going, and yet while I did guess one or two things along the way, I was still hooked. The things I did guess were later on in the story and there were several other pieces of the jigsaw that I didn't see.

This is an excellent read and one that has a few red herrings and seemingly dead ends as it twisted through the desert landscape. If you are a reader who likes fast-paced, action adventure, crime thriller reads they speed off from the very first pages then this is a book you need to grab. A brilliant read that works well as a stand-alone, but I would recommend Scream Blue Murder and while you're there get the rest of this authors books... you are guaranteed of riveting reads

Cold Winter Sun is a book I would definitely recommend.

Great stand alone thriller

I do love Tony Forder's books they never fail to deliver and tick many boxes and this one was no different.

Just another day in cold snowy Scotland for Mike when his phone rings. The display says Wendy (his daughter) but it is actually his ex wife. A Mike tries to make sense of his mixed emotions he also tries to work out what Donna wants and why she is using Wendy's phone. His panic calms when he realises his daughter is fine but what Donna actually wants is a favour that will take him away from his comfort zone and back to the danger zone he is still recovering from.

As Mike contacts Terry the pair set off to the USA with no idea what lies ahead except a young man is missing and Mike has been handed an expenses paid trip to see his daughter.

This is a roller coaster ride of a book with danger, fraud, violence and lies all tangled up. As the pair travel to New Mexico they find themselves caught up in the middle with several groups all after the same thing - Drew and the secrets he holds.

Can the pair find Drew in time to save him?

This is an interesting read with complex characters and several killer twists that will appeal to Crime Fiction readers.

More twists and turns than an acrobat

This fast-paced novel will have you turning pages like a demon. There is plenty to get your teeth into as more and more twists to the plot are revealed, and the cast increases dramatically from half a dozen at the beginning to many more as the story progresses.

The main characters are Mike and Terry, both ex-special forces who have been asked by Mike’s ex-wife Donna, now relocated to America, to investigate the disappearance of her new husband’s nephew, Vern Jackson. For Mike this is a no-brainer as he will have the chance to spend time with his teenage daughter, Wendy and, he doesn’t have a job at the moment.

The new husband, Drew, runs a software company and Vern works for him in IT. Having said he was going away on a hiking holiday, Vern seems to have dropped off the grid and his mother, Drew’s sister, is concerned.

What follows is an action-packed adventure which takes Mike and Terry to New Mexico and the site of an alleged alien spaceship crash back in 1947. Once there they attract the notice of several other people who all seem to be tracking Vern; interestingly these include police, the FBI and an American Indian by the name of Joe Kane.

I must admit that personally, I am a little bored with the formula of ex-military misfits, with hearts of gold, who find it surprisingly easy to get their serious hands-on weaponry and who then come out on top having saved the day. However, I suspect that the genre is not going away any time soon.

An easy and enjoyable read which tested credibility on occasion but still managed to deliver a convincing yarn.

I first read one of Tony J. Forder's books, Scream Blue Murder last year and in my review described it as a book that puts the thrills into thriller. Since then I've read all of his DI Bliss novels to date and now consider him one of my must-read authors. It's especially enjoyable, therefore, to return to the characters that started my love affair with his writing and to be reunited once more with Mike Lynch and Terry Cochran.
Cold Winter Sun could be read as a standalone and there's enough included here for new readers to catch up with the story so far but I would strongly recommend reading Scream Blue Murder first if you can. Not only because it's a fantastic book but also so you can truly appreciate the progression of Mike Lynch's character from that book to this one. He's now a very different person to the man he was at the start of the first novel when he was not in a good place in his life. It's acknowledged that the events of that summer exerted a toll on him but he's come out the other side stronger, more focused and more akin to the man he used to be when he served alongside Terry Cochran as a Royal Marine. In Scream Blue Murder he was reacting to a situation he suddenly found himself in but in Cold Winter Sun he is immediately more proactive, choosing to respond to a plea for help from his ex-wife, Donna.
Although Donna has now remarried, Mike still has feelings for her and misses his teenage daughter, Wendy. It's inevitable then that he should answer her request to help search for her new husband's missing nephew so he enlists Terry's help once more and the pair fly to America. Moving the action Stateside in this book, together with the more confident and decisive Lynch gives an exciting, fresh feeling to this thriller. I loved that the two main protagonists are British but the setting is American as are most of the people they interact with. Tony J. Forder never falls back on the tired old fish-out-of-water cliche here, thankfully and instead it is Lynch and Cochran whose experience and wily acumen mean they know when to use their out of town credentials to their best advantage to give them the upper hand.
It transpires that there are a number of people also on the trail of the missing young man, Vern but not all of them have the best intentions for him. Mike and Terry are joined by a young woman, Chelsea who knows Vern but just how she is involved with his disappearance is uncertain. Mike feels he can trust her but realises she isn't telling him everything. The pair's frustration at not being in possession of the full facts is understandable as they follow what they hope may be a lead while constantly knowing they may not even be searching in the right part of the country. The evidence has taken them to New Mexico and the scene setting here is masterful. There's a cinematic feel throughout to the book as Mike and Terry travel to different small town locations in the state, many of which will be familiar to anybody with a passing knowledge of the famous supposed UFO landing in that area in 1947... Most of the book is narrated in the first person from Lynch's perspective but some chapters follow an enigmatic Native American. Joe Kane and these small interludes are intriguing, providing readers with knowledge Mike and Terry are not aware of but also giving us an insight into the skills and beliefs of this powerful Apache warrior.
The plot of Cold Winter Sun is tense and complex but despite the large cast of characters and the uncertainty as to why everybody is after young Vern, the action never becomes unnecessarily confusing. When the inevitable showdown happens, events are plausibly chaotic but the nail-biting intensity is balanced by Tony J. Forder's clarity of writing; we may not know what's going to happen next but we understand what has occurred when it does. Cold Winter Sun is an intelligent and exhilarating action thriller and with characters whose lives I have become invested in, I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in just a few hours. It gives me great pleasure to say this is another of Tony J. Forder's books I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending and I can't wait to read his next!

Cold Winter Sun by Tony J. Forder
Sequel to Scream Bloody Murder

Opening with a torture scene sets a dark mood for this book that has Mike Lynch’s ex-wife Donna calling him from California for help just after the prologue. Her new husband’s nephew has gone missing and she hopes Mike will be able to find him and bring him home. Why an ex-husband would willingly get on a plane in Europe and head to California to find the nephew of the man who married the woman he still loves is a bit of a conundrum but that is just what he did.

This is the second book in what may become a series. Not having read Scream Bloody Murder did not impair my ability to enjoy this book – not even a little bit. Mike and his retired marine buddy Terry are both intelligent, well trained, lethal killing machines. So, when they show up and start looking for nephew Vern it is assumed they will find the person they are looking for…eventually…although what shape he will be in is questionable after reading that opening torture scene.

This was an action-packed thrilling story that kept me interested throughout. The reason Vern was gone proved to be a mystery within a mystery with several red herrings to deal with before the truth is finally revealed. There is more than one evil person and group in this book and more characters than most to keep track of but it all came together well by the end of the story. I felt I could relate to the main characters and was rooting for Mike and Terry as the story unfolded. I wouldn’t mind seeing the two of them in future books although what type of business they would actually open is a bit of a mystery to me BUT no worries because the author seems more than capable of deciding what shingle to hang out for Mike and Terry should they decide to go into business and entertain us with their exploits.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the ARC – this is my honest review.

Thrilling Read

A second outing for Mike and Terry, this time they high tail over the pond to the USA giving them lots of room, to look for, what looks to be a needle in a haystack. Mike's ex-wife's husband's nephew has mysteriously disappeared out in the vast, mostly uninhabited countryside, after a trip to Las Vegas.

Trying to get a lead on just what has happened, brings them into contact with some very very unsavoury characters, but also some who will no doubt, become close allies in the future.
There's lots of action, with the added bonus of a few giggles. But the star of this story has to be the plot and storyline, head scratching, puzzlement and consuming impatience to reach the end. And what an explosive end it is too. Wasn't expecting the clever and shocking revelation at the end!

I loved this second book, in the series, as the characters are all wonderfully thought out and they draw you into the story........but I did find I took awhile to get into this story. The previous book hit the ground running at a breakneck speed from the first page, this one was a little slower to pull in my attention, probably because it had to layout the storyline first. That said, it picked up the pace as the story unfolded and with the clever twist at the end it makes for a fabulous read.

If you haven't read this author's work before, I strongly advertise you give him a go. He's a superb writer that captures your imagination, and leaves you impatient for his next book!

Mike Lynch is in the wilds of Scotland, recovering physically and mentally from a near-death experience of the previous summer when he receives a call for help from his ex-wife Donna. A nephew of her new husband is missing and the police are doing little to find him. Mike agrees to help and enlists the aid of his friend, Terry Cochran.

Terry and Mike travel to Los Angeles at the expense of Donna's husband, Drew and embark on a journey to locate the missing man. Few if any clues are available to them, and we follow their trail from Los Angeles, to Las Vegas, and through a barely populated area of New Mexico where they encounter the local sheriff, two FBI agents, two fake police officers and a Native American Indian, all of whom seem to be searching for someone but is it the man for whom they are searching?  Eventually, they manage to unravel the mystery and locate the young man. But to know what happens up until then and following that find, you will have to read the book.

I found it totally fascinating, going into areas of which I had no experience or knowledge. A book with totally believable characters and Mike and Terry really drew me into the story.  It's a book well worth reading and one I strongly recommend. As I understand it, this is the follow up to Scream Blue Murder. I'm off to get my hands on a copy of that book.

Thank you Bloodhound Books for providing me with a copy of the book to review.

This book is without doubt a brilliant follow-on from Scream Blue Murder, the first introduction to a very troubled ex-Marine Mike Lynch who seemed to have 'bad luck' as his middle name. After being reunited with his friend Terry Cochran from his services in the Royal Marines, their friendship holds no bounds. Mike is going from strength to strength, phyically and emotionally. The character-building in Cold Winter Sun is superb. A plea from his ex-wife and her new husband to find a missing relative leads him across seas out of his comfort zone...but not for long. His best friend Terry is more than willing to accompany him. They face an avalanche of dead-ends and can trust no one. But Mike and Terry make a forbidible team and are a force to be reckoned with...they take no prisoners. The tension and pace escalate when things get personal. An excellent read which will have you holding your breath to the very end...and what at ending it is.

It was a pleasure to read an ARC of this book.
Thank you .
Cold Winter Sun continues the adventures of Mike Lynch and his pal, Terry Cochran, with whom we first met in the excellent Scream Blue Murder. Cold Winter Sun can be read as a standalone.
Their latest exploits take them to Las Vegas and New Mexico in their hunt for missing Vern (Mike's ex wife's new husbands nephew..!.) who has disappeared.
They encounter masses of challenges in this fast paced thriller with numerous contortions, skullduggery, deceit and chicanery which I now expect in Tony Forders' writing!
Just when you think you've got it sorted and worked out it swivels in the opposite direction full of thrills and wallops.
Another unmissable must read for all thriller fans

Mike Lynch and his former forces colleague Terry are called to the states by Mike’s ex wife Donna who is now remarried to Drew and living there happily with Mike’s daughter Wendy. That is until Drew’s nephew Vern fails to return from a camping trip to Vegas. Local police and even a private investigator fail to find out much, and what starts as a missing person enquiry soon escalates into a full on race across the desert involving gangsters, gunfights a plenty, Native Americans, UFO enthusiasts, FBI agents and the local Sherriff. The plot isn’t bad, although it didn’t grip me quite as much as I would have liked, however the book is well written and there is a nice little twist at the end.

I was excited to get an ARC of Cold Winter Sun. I have read other books by Tony but not in this series and again, I was not disappointed. This is the second in a series but can be read alone, although I have already added, Scream Blue Murder, to my kindle.
Cold Winter Sun is very easy to read and is very unpredictable. Just when you think that you have worked out where the plot is going there is a twist which makes it addictive. The way it is written makes you feel that you are actually in the story. I really hope there will be another in this series.

If you have read other books by this author then welcome to this next chapter in Mike Lynch's life. If you are new to him then sit back and enjoy this twisty, turning adrenaline packed novel.
Following on from the dark days he experienced after his fight to protect the innocents in the last few months Mike has taken him self off the grid in order to gain back his equilibrium and sanity. That is until his ex-wife reaches out to ask a favour, her new husbands nephew has gone missing and she needs Mike's help. He takes up her call for help and after a swift call to his best friend and the man who saved his life Terry Cochran they take a plane out to L.A.
After an emotional reunion with his daughter the pair are soon on the road to where the missing mans car was left, a deserted roadside in New Mexico.
What follows is a thrilling road trip interspersed with great descriptive commentary of the surroundings that makes it seem you are there with them on their journey to find the missing man. Mike and Terry are faced with various obstacles as they try to make sense of the clues left behind . Who are the fake cops working for ?. What has got the F.B.I so interested ? Keep the guys company as they travel to Roswell and Area 51 in their quest to find the missing man as it becomes more and more obvious there is more to the search than even they first thought.
Whoever is also looking for the same missing man is serious in their intent to track him too. As Mike and Terry race against time to save all involved the reason behind it all is revealed. Money the root of many evils and there are certainly some very evil men involved in this race to the finish line.
A story that accelerates its pace and drags you further into the life and trials of Mike Lynch, a man filled with torment and pain but who only ever wants to do the best he can within the life he leads. A character brought to life brilliantly by the author. This book was written as a follow on to Scream Blue Murder but can be easily read as a stand alone and one I hope turns into a series of stories as I want to carry on learning more about Mike.

The first thing I want to say about this author is that he never disappoints and he has written an absolutely cracking thriller here!

I loved the plot, the characters were fantastic and that cover is excellent – the whole thing was executed brilliantly and it worked for me from the first to last pages and I can’t give it anything other than 5 stars!!

I read the book in an evening and flew through the pages. His writing style is brilliant for this genre and I loved the flow for the story. Superb!

Very highly recommended – a thrilling read – very highly recommended!!

I had the great honour of reading an ARC copy of this book.
I have read it from cover to cover in one sitting, and when I informed my sister of this, while recommending the book, she was surprised and stated that she would definitely have to look out for it when it comes out as this never normally happens with me, I'm not a fast reader.
Tony J. Forder has an amazing gift of being able to grab my attention and my imagination from the very first page.
This book is a standalone book, but we are first introduced to Mike and Terry in Scream Blue Murder, which is another brilliant 5* read. Although what happens is referred to in this book, you don't need to have read it to read this book.
Cold Winter Sun has so much action and is so fast paced that you'll be so immersed that you'll forget the time and if you're like me a few other things😜😜
The way that Tony describes some of the area's really transported me there, I felt like I was on a ride along. The descriptions of the characters are brilliant, in fact everything about this book is absolutely brilliant.
Tony J. Forder is what I call a unicorn author, whatever he writes is absolutely amazing and magic and I absolutely love unicorns. 😍😍

Mike and Terry have gone to America to try and find Mike’s ex wife’s husband’s nephew who went to Las Vegas and has suddenly disappeared off the radar- something totally against his nature. Mike still loves his wife and by agreeing to this means he has been able to make contact with his daughter- something he hasn’t been able to do for too long. Both men are ex military and are experienced in many aspects. Terry has saved Mike’s life before now. They know that trouble has a habit of finding them and this trail isn't any different. Why has Vern disappeared and why are others also out looking for him- others who are armed and dangerous? This is a very different story- a hunt, a mystery which slowly drew me in. I wanted to know the whys and wherefores and how one track led to another- or not. A cleverly thought out plot and one to keep the old grey matter active. This is the second in the series but happily stands alone ( I hadn’t read the first one). A very interesting read.

Cold Winter Sun is the second in a series, but I haven't read the first one.

Description: "A missing man. A determined hunter. A deadly case.
When Mike Lynch is contacted by his ex-wife about the missing nephew of her new husband, he offers to help find the young man with the help of his friend Terry Cochran.

Arriving in LA to try and track down the young man, the pair are immediately torn away when the missing man’s car shows up, abandoned on the side of a deserted road in New Mexico.

When two fake police officers cross their path, Terry and Mike know there is more to the case than meets the eye, and soon they find themselves asking exactly who it is they are really looking for…"

This is one of those books that I didn't want to put down, but didn't love. Reasonably likable, if stereotypical characters in Mike and Terry, but the plot didn't work all that well for me. I notice most reviews are quite positive, so maybe I was expecting something a little different.

Brilliant sequel to Scream Blue Murder taking you further into the personalities of Mike and Terry. Thrilling and action packed, compelling to the end when a twist is introduced into the mix. If you have not read Scream Blue Murder, you will want to after reading this.

Crime combines here with rollicking high adventure in what amounts to a man-hunt. A young man is missing and Mike Lynch and his friend Terry are looking for him. It takes us into New Mexico, to the Roswell site, where someone doesn’t want people to go. This is a fast-pace thriller and I couldn’t help but be drawn into it. Lots of edge-of-the-seat moments and a high body count make this a book you have to keep reading. I discovered it was a sequel but that didn’t detract one bit from the coherence of the story. Highly recommended.
