Sebastian “Race me for it.” Four simple words. Five desolate years. Sebastian Kelly believes he isn’t worthy of redemption, of a chance to right his wrongs. But an unexpected trip home, the place he dreads most, calls in question everything he’s come to believe. And who knows, he may find exactly what he’s been waiting for. Autumn One broken promise. Two pink lines. Autumn Norris knew in an instant her life would never be the same. Years have flown by in a flurry of sparkles and dress up, and Autumn has refused to let the anchor of regret pull her under. Until she lays eyes on Sebastian, and the wave of “why," “where," and "how could you" flood her every thought. Old hurt and new betrayal twist first love into a reluctant partnership, and theirs may be a bond even pigtails and butterfly kisses can’t mend. But the past five years have felt like a lifetime, and Seb is willing to wait as long as it takes. Because the truth is, he’s always been waiting for Autumn. Waiting for Autumn is stand-alone, second chance, small town romance.
J.A. Derouen resides in South Louisiana with her husband, son (aptly nicknamed "The Professor"), and her furry friend, Scout. She has a bachelor’s degrees in psychology and nursing. When she's not writing or inhaling romance novels by the stack, she works as a women's health nurse. She’s been an avid reader and daydreamer since childhood, and she's never stopped turning the page to get to the next happily ever after.
WHOA!! Oh my gosh, this one grabbed me whole and didn’t let go from start to finish.
My first read by this author and I enjoyed her unique writing style.
I went in blind, not knowing a darn thing about the storyline or the characters, and I suggest you do the same! I only saw the five star ratings and assumed by the cover it was a romance. It was riveting, and worth every second of my time.
It is one heck of a second chancer with characters I fell head over heals for. I loved the ‘feels’ this one gave me and is swoony to boot.
I will tell you the story revolves around one mistake, and the lives of these characters are altered forever.
Oh my gosh! This was one of the most stunningly beautiful books I’ve read! I am so totally in love with both Sebastian and Autumn. I’ll be riding this high for a long while.
Second chance romances can be a bit tricky for me but holy heck, this one was absolute perfection! I loved the little flashbacks of Seb and Autumn as well as Brady, Autumn’s brother. It gave just enough background to their relationship, how it developed and where it led them.
The pain and angst of their conflict was just so painful to read and I felt like I was actually experiencing it with each of them. My heart felt battered and sore, achy and so very lonely.
Ms. DeRouen writes some of the most poetic lines as she leads us through the past as well as the present. I could have highlight the whole book to show examples of her exquisite writing. With a look, a pause in speaking, a simple thought, she showed me every emotion Autumn and Sebastian felt and I was helpless to fall completely into this story and so disappointed when it ended.
I’m refraining from outlining the story itself because experiencing it as it uncurls throughout the book is part of its beauty. It does deal with one other trope that some readers may or may not love but I suspect you may pick up on that from the blurb. If so, I will say that I felt the way Autumn and Seb initially reacted and then later resolved the issue was completely natural to the circumstances. I couldn’t imagine myself handling it any other way.
The pacing is just right, secondary characters adding additional depth to the hero and heroine as well as to the overall story as well as tantalizing the reader with the hope of more from two of them. I really want a story for Brady and Lexi! The steam level is not predominant but there is never a doubt as to how this couple feel about each other and when they are together, it’s explosive. If you haven’t realized it yet, I absolutely loved, Loved, LOVED this book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I'm always open to new authors, this is my first book from this author and I loved it!It was a sweet and emotional read.
This is exactly what I expected from a second chance romance.After a tragedy Autumn and Sebastian were apart and now after years they meet again.There were so many feeling between them.
Their journey isn't easy, they have to deal with their past.I love their moments together.So intense and emotional.
It was a great story.I'm looking forward to read more books from this author.
After reading the blurb for Waiting for Autumn I just HAD to get my hands on this story. It is like all of my favorite romance tropes bundled into one amazing story. Friends to Lovers? Check. Best Friend's Sibling? Check. Small Town? Check. Friends to Lovers? Check. Second Chance? Check. Secret Baby? Check. New Adult? Check. Add J.A. DeRouen's exquisitely beautiful writing to all of that and you have the makings of this 5-Star read that I really hope turns into a series.
Between the fun humorous moments that had me laughing and the heartwarming and emotional moments that had me tearing up, I received many weird glances from some ladies in the waiting room at the local hospital where I read the majority of this book. I don't think I can pick out one moment in this book that is my favorite because there are so many wonderful ones. But if I had to pick, I think my top 3 moments would all be made up of moments between Seb and Aria. There is something about J.A.'s that makes everything she writes so impactful and realistic. I could feel Autumn's emotional struggles as if they were my own and Seb's turmoil and love over meeting Aria and trying to win her acceptance bled out of the pages and into me.
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It feels like I’ve been waiting For.Ever. for the rest of Autumn and Seb’s story, but in reality it’s only been since January! But that’s what happens when you’re completely invested in characters, like I was with these 2. I loved them sooo much! I remember finishing their short story when it was part of the Begin Again anthology, thinking that couldn’t be all, she couldn't leave us hanging like that- this was just the beginning of their story and I needed more! Thankfully Ms. DeRouen heeded our call and gave us the rest of the story. (Said in my best Paul Harvey voice…did I just show my age?!?)
Waiting For Autumn was everything I could have wanted for Sebastian and Autumn, and so much more than I could have imagined. Giving us glimpses of the past while moving the story forward, Ms. DeRouen brought their story full circle. From childhood friends who were inseparable, to young adults falling in love, only to be torn apart by a terrible tragedy, to current day, with reconciliation hopefully on the horizon, I was so completely invested in everything Autumn and Sebastian went through, and were going through.
It was such an unfortunate set of circumstances that led to Sebastian and Autumn’s separation- 5 years of missing out on each others lives made me equal parts mad and sad for all that had happened and all they had missed!
Every time i pick up a book of hers it’s an experience of the heart and soul.
Unforgettable love.
Forgiveness.
Second chances.
Sebastian and Willow fell in love at a very young age. After tragedy strikes. Sebastian is pretty much pushed out of town. It’s five years later and Sebastian has come back to the town he tried to never think about again. All the love. All the hurts. All the regretfulness is coming back.
After everything said and done can you ever forget the person who broke your heart?!
Willow and Sebastian’s love story was beautiful, and graceful no matter how much hurt tore them apart.
The writing is poetic, and just heart pounding goood.
There is so much more than just a love story in this book. It’s a story about redemption, forgiveness, and friendships that will stand the test of time.
This author again floors me. She brings together a Story about love, loss, and a forever that nobody can touch.
A wonderful, beautifully written story of first loves and second chances. Sebastian and Autumn have a once in a lifetime love that began as kids, and I loved how J.A. DeRouen peppered their story with events from the past to highlight how they still affected them in the present. When they're thrown back together years later, the slow burn that sizzles off the page until they find their way back to each other had me on the edge of my seat. I loved every second of this book, and am hoping the awesome side characters will tell their own stories soon! All the stars!
I love all kinds of romance but what I think I enjoy the most is getting lost in a sweet and simple love story that has characters you can believe in and never want to leave. A decision and a few words made as teenagers changes the course of two people in love. My heart ached as I read the beginnings of Sebastian and Autumn’s story. Floating between their sweet past as childhood sweethearts and present day peels back layers. I love the discovery and my slightly erratic heartbeat needs me to turn the pages faster.
Sebastian Kelly is like any young man in love. And also like any teenager that doesn’t always think before taking a risk. He has grown into good man who wants to right his mistakes. He is a man who has never given up hope or on his love for Autumn. He’s a good uncle trying to do what’s best for his nephew. His determination and steadfast commitment, depth and understanding make him almost perfect but it also makes him real. You couldn’t help but root for him.
Autumn Norris loves with fierce loyalty and has to dig through a jumble of emotions to get where she wants to be. Her love for Sebastian was never in doubt. But the hurt and betrayal she felt is real and will take time to forgive. She’s cautious with every reason to be.
The slow build of the relationship allows the growth of both Sebastian and Autumn. It’s a natural progression and one that I feel a part of as the reader. There’s no question they belong together but there are definitely things they need to overcome and to get into all of that would give spoilers and ruin the beauty of the story.
There are amazing secondary characters that add depth and meaning to the story and who aren’t just hanging around on the edges. Waiting for Autumn is a sweet, mature, easy read with just enough angst to make you a little anxious and enough love to make you feel good and your heart full.
What a beautiful and heartbreaking second chance love story. Autumn and Sebastian's lives always intertwined with each other, until that one night were everything changed.
What Sebastian went through had me getting angry because teenagers will be teenagers. Never did he think that those 4 words would change the course of his & Autumn's lives. Despite the years that passed by since last seeing each other peoples attitudes had not changed. And that included Autumn's love for Sebastian.
I honestly didn't know which way their story would go but I realized that no matter how much time or distance, Sebastian and Autumn's attraction for each other was still there in the forefront.
Like I said, a beautiful second chance at love with the one you knew would always be yours no matter what. Kara~ 4 Stars
This is my first book by Miss DeRouen. Listening to the audio book, I found the writing is overly dramatic with a bit of sassy and quirkiness. But the sentences confusing me so I can not really feel the emotion, the characters chemistry and the time line. The story is told from 2 POV alternating back and forth between past and now.
Despite all of those minus attributes, I love Sebastian. See the Hero character usually is alpha male cave man that kind of character. But Sebastian is different. He is patient, beta male but still have that sweetness and dorky about him. He makes me want to cuddle with him like a teddy bear. Meanwhile Autumn is character I can not connect very well. I think its because of the writing is confusing.
I still give this book 3 stars just because of Sebastian.
I've been a fan of J.A. DeRouen ever since reading "The Over Duet" by her last year. That's why there was no doubt in my mind that I would pick up her latest standalone novel, Waiting For Autumn. Since my expectations were pretty high, I was slightly disappointed that the story didn't live up to them.
The story of this second chance Contemporary Romance was good but also a little unbelievable and too dramatic in my eyes. I'm not really sure if the events in the beginning of the book would unfold like this in real life. It seems a little too drastic in my opinion and not something someone would do. I might look at it a little too naive but come on, it was definitely a little too much. Also, I might think "too German" but it's always good to have a liability insurance! ;)
I really liked Sebastian. He was funny, kind, charismatic, honest, and smart. I felt really sorry for him and his situation. He has been wronged by so many people, and why was that? Because he was held responsible for something he didn't do. Something no one could have prevented. Events that were simply unfortunate and unlucky, an accident. The fact that no one really helped him is beyond my understanding. I'm not really sure if I liked Autumn. She was okay I guess, but definitely not one of my favorite female heroines. What I definitely do know is that Aria was a little annoying and really spoiled.
What I really did enjoy was DeRouen's writing style. She has a way of drawing someone into the story and wanting more more more. Even though Waiting For Autumn turned out differently than I had anticipated, it was a very cute and decent story with an amazing male hero.
Update: 10/4th Going from MAYBE to NOPE What’s this:1800’s?! When people ran someone out of town because they “blame” them of a crime and don’t care to investigate the facts? And most of the times the person they blame is never guilty. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤑🤑🤑🤑 And the secret baby plot? Are still being used?? 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
E minha amiga Lu gave a even better insight (in the comments section) in this joke of a plot. 3 irresponsible teenagers doing stupid things and just 1 is blamed for the shit that went down? The heroine and her brother were 2 cowards. And the whole town a bunch of idiotic jerks. The brother should be thankful he’s still alive. Enredo estupido do “carai”. 🙄🙄
Former note:Waiting for "real" reviews. The ones with "too emotional", tugged in heart", "captivated from 1st page", "palpable emotions" etc. etc. etc. don't sell me anything. It's like something is hid in the details. I need more than "characters were so great and made for each other". Wait I will until spoilers. But my GR friends Dilek and Leonor already passed it, so this is already a negative against the book. Waiting...

When a race between best friends turns into a horrific accident, the lives of all involved changed forever. While Sebastian shoulders all the guilt and responsibility of the accident and is exiled from his family and hometown, Autumn isn’t just heartbroken that he left without a word she must also face an unexpected pregnancy all by herself.
Even though it seemed like a lifetime but was actually five years later, Sebastian goes back home to face the past but is met with present and possible future he never would have expected. Can they get past the pain in order to have a second change at first love?
I missed J.A. writing. I had missed all the highlights from beautiful quotes. DeRouen has a very unique poetic like style which augments the reading experience. I found myself quickly falling for Seb and Autumn’s backstory told through quick flashbacks just as much as their heartbreaking separation, angst filled reunion and promising future. My heart was put through the wringer in the best possible way.
Even though the general plotline was a forgone assumption, as is with most romances (we are expecting a happy ending after all), I loved how Sebastian and Autumn’s relationship developed and unfolded from start to finish. The story’s pacing was spot on, the supporting characters gave the it an added layer, and the romance itself was lovely.
Waiting for Autumn is a standalone, second chance romance by J.A. Derouen. It is an angsty and sexy romance that will touch your heart. It’s told from both points of view with a happy ending.
* I was given an ARC of this book courtesy of the author. I am voluntarily reviewing this title. *
“Sometimes forgiveness is about letting go–taking that five-ton boulder off your chest and heaving it into the abyss. I’ve carried this weight for far too long.”
“Five years, ten…blonde hair or black. It makes no difference. Autumn Norris will always have a direct line straight to my heart.”
“Loving Autumn was never a conscious decision. No, our relationship was a living, breathing thing, constantly morphing and changing through the years. Maybe that was why losing her rocked me to my very core. Because loving her was like a golden thread of memories woven into the deepest part of me.”
“The possiblity of something more…I’ve lived on less, so much less than that over the last few years. I think I’ll take my chances.”
Waiting for Autumn is a beautiful and heartbreaking second chance romance. From the moment you meet Autumn and Sebastian, you can just feel the love between the two of them. It’s that once in a life time, destined for one another love. The sky was the limit for these two….That is until tragedy stuck. This one moment in time destroyed everything and ripped them apart. Decisions were made and actions were taken. Secrets were made that would remain buried until fate decided to intervene….Years later, these two former lovers will once again be brought together. The regret and pain still burning between them. But underneath all that pain is a spark that refuses to be put out. So much has happened, but a love like this can never be forgotten…Will Autumn and Sebastian find their way through all the pain and regret? Will they be able to forgive, forget and finally be able to move on? Will Autumn and Sebastian finally get their happily ever after??? There’s only one way to find out…..
Waiting for Autumn was everything I wanted and then some. This story tugged at my heart and gave me all the feels. I was captivated from the very first page and I hung on to every word. I couldn’t read through the pages fast enough and could not put this book down. Waiting for Autumn is a book that you can easily finish in just one sitting and I dare you to not devour each and every word. This story will consume you and keep you begging for more. The hurt. The pain. The longing. The emotions…it’s all so palpable and real. You experience each moment, each emotion right along with the characters as if they were your own. This story is complicated, yet beautiful as the same time. You’ll laugh. You’ll have tears in your eyes. You’ll swoon and rage all at the same time.
Waiting for Autumn is the perfect story to spend your day getting swept away in. The story captivating you and making you fall in love with the very first page. The characters are real, flawed and perfectly imperfect. Their love and pain is the kind that is worth fighting for and never giving up on. It’s complicated. It’s beautiful. It’s everything I never knew I needed..

I've enjoyed this author's work in the past. She knows how to pull all the emotions from you with her stories. Her writing is fluid and full of heart. Her characters are endearing with flaws but it's hard not to fall for them. Sebastian and Autum's story was beautiful. I loved seeing the past and present tenses, it added to the story. I loved that after such tragedy tore them apart, something amazing brought them back together. Not without hard work, of course. Nothing comes easy but these two had a love strong enough to overcome their past mistakes. I didn't care for Autum's parents at all. I loved her brother Brady, who was also Seb's best friend, felt bad for what happened to him in the past. I loved how much he cared for both of them, never took sides when shit hit the fan. His ability to look past Seb's faults and still love him, like a brother, made his character that much more loveable. I loved Aria. She was the cutest 4 year old!! She melted my heart. And the interaction between her and Sebastian was perfection. I loved Lexi and Isaac. Basically all the side characters played their roles perfectly, adding more to the story. This was a win for me. My second book of the Year. I loved It! 4.5 stars!
I loved this second chance romance. JA DeRouen nailed it. Big time!
Five years ago Sebastian Kelly was everything to Autumn Norris. Her best friend, her boyfriend, her lover, and the love of her life. But fourlittle words would change all that in the blink of an eye.
Race me for it!
When Seb challenges her brother to a quad race the unimaginable happens. A bad accident. That leaves one in a chair. One heartbroken and alone. The other made to run and leave everything behind. Now the crew is thrown back together. Secrets will be revealed. Old hurts will resurface and threaten the present and future and Seb will have to fight for what he lost and what he never knew he had.
This book is well written. The flow is fast and encompassing. The characters are deep and fresh. I loved our hero and heroine. I loved her brother and his worker, Lexi.
When I first met Seb and Autumn as part of the Begin Again anthology I hoped and wished that it wouldn't be the last time I read about them. The book fairies heard my prayers and I was so excited when JA DeRouen decided to make their story into a full length novel. This second chance, childhood friends to lovers tale will have you laughing, crying, and swooning from page 1.
This was such an emotional read. It was at times painful and heart wrenching seeing these two ripped apart and unable to truly move forward. There was so much baggage and unresolved feelings between Seb and Autumn, that even though life continued for both of them, it was built on such fragile foundations. I really appreciated the honesty of their struggles to reconnect and get past their feelings of betrayal and hurt. It also helped that from the moment Seb and Autumn cross paths again, Seb is all in and ready to fight for his happily ever after. But can you truly begin again or will the weight of past mistakes crush any chance at a new start?
There were a lot of great secondary characters in the story, but the two that stood out most to me were Aria and Brady. Aria was just too cute and watching her relationship with Seb unfold was so sweet and adorable. I also loved her crush on Isaac and of course her back and forth with Uncle Brady. I'm *really* hoping that we see more of Brady and a certain feisty barista ;) Him and Lexi were fantastic and I loved their frenemies banter. I would have loved to see a little more from Autumn and Seb's past, like some of the fallout/years after to help understand what drove them so irrevocably apart for 5 years. I understand that they were teens when everything dramatically changed, but I still found it hard to swallow that neither would ever seek the other out or attempt to make any contact at all. Everyone manages and handles pain and grief differently though, so it's hard to know what those circumstances would drive someone to do/believe.
This was a wonderful second chance romance that will have you feeling all the feels and leave your heart hopeful. I'll keep my fingers crossed that we'll be back in Haven, LA soon.
4.5 stars
*I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book*
What a complete letdown. If you don't want to be spoiled, you should stop here.
~~~~~~~~~~
I looked forward to this book and it started out well, but then it dissolved into a stew of frustration and disappointment. Hero Sebastian was too soft. Heroine Autumn was just...ugh. The foundation of the plot pushed the boundaries of belief and the actions of people were extreme to the point of ridiculous. It was too much, and the resolution of such a mess didn't measure up, like the satisfying completion of an idea never formed. The inclusion of the dreaded secret baby trope could hardly make it worse...or could it?
Seb's overall character wasn't an accurate representation of human nature and shows a lack of understanding of said nature, while the bias towards the heroine was obvious. In reality, the book should have been titled 'Waiting for Sebastian.' The guy was screwed over by literally everyone he'd ever loved and trusted, and his actions and personality were entirely inconsistent for someone who sustained that level of damage. Yet the implication I got was that he had to earn his right back into everyone's lives even though he'd done nothing wrong other than to be part of an incident where everyone was being less than responsible.
So, the fallout that ensued, where he was shunned by everyone he'd ever loved and trusted and run out of town by his own father, does not compute. And how Autumn figured she was the wounded party was inconceivable, particularly since her actions sort of trumped everyone else's.
In the end, this book is a Hallmark story, syrupy sweet and shallow and too easily resolved. Seb was too girly, too soft and needy. His insta-love for the kid was embarrassing and mushy and just too female. I'm not into pure Alpha males by any means, but neither am I into pure Betas, and Seb was like, über beta. Also, he had a beard, and that's always a turn off.
So yeah. This book will appeal to anyone who likes their stories sweet and easy and don't mind when an angsty plot is circumvented by a kid.
Gave up around 70-75%. 1.5 stars.
Ohhhhhh my. This book made me heart ache. Ache so sweet.
A true second chance story for Sebastian and Autumn. A tragedy that tore them apart just at the end of school, rupturing the life that was set out for them. Now, they will meet again. And it's not going to be easy to task to get to talking or reconnecting.
J.a. DeRouen just hit it out of the park. This story is so nuanced and comes with one or two surprises that will make you rethink all you've read before. Sebastian and Autumn are complex characters that don't just have one way of thinking that they hold onto. The development of them as a couple, as well as both individually, is a true pleasure to read. The author manages to draw you in, also with interesting secondary characters that supplement the main characters, bringing out their nuance, without overshadowing or remaining a one-note person. The story delivers on so many levels, humor, emotion, and all the true love. <3
This was such a great story. It is heartbreaking yet healing at the same time. Love the strength Autumn and Seb have through all the tough times. Aria is such a sweet breath of fresh air to this story.
Waiting for Autumn is the kind of second chance romance I adore. J.A. DeRouen once again creates a touching New Adult storyline with incredible characters that I simply could not put down. Sebastian and Autumn were always meant to be, their practically perfect path to happiness thrown a huge curveball. Getting a bit of their past as they fall madly in love as teenagers was welcomed as their current lives 5 years later are filled with trepidation and regret. I needed to know what had happened to force their separation and although it takes most of the book to finally get all the answers, it was well worth the pain.
Theirs is not an easy journey but I so enjoy how the Author gives her main characters the love and support they need in order to figure out how to find that connection once more. There are some bittersweet memories to get past as Sebastian reunites with his long lost best friend in Brady and yet they pick up where they left off as if nothing happened on that 4-wheeler all those years ago. Seb also has the very prickly Lexi by his side and she provides a huge dose of humor with her no-nonsense ways. But the true star of this show is the precocious Aria and the way she commands a room like no other. It's not hard to see how she has everyone wrapped around her finger and how she knows how to melt the most hardened of hearts.
What starts out as a dreaded reunion of sorts, soon turns into the beginnings of a real family that both Sebastian and Autumn have craved for so long. The lack of communication through the years may have lead to a ton of hurt and mistrust but the Author beautifully guides our couple through some tough love that gives them the hope for more.
I'm so thrilled the Author chose to expand upon her story that originally was part of an Anthology, since both Sebastian and Autumn deserve the happiness that only the other can deliver. It was an absolute pleasure getting to experience their oft-times difficult journey, sprinkled with the right amount of sharp wit and true love. I can only hope we get more of Lexi and Brady in the future. Both need their stories told next.
Waiting for Autumn is that perfect little story you can't help but love from start to finish and I'm very happy to give it a solid 5 stars!
This blurb is what really caught my attention when I first read it and I knew, just knew that I had to read this book.
I totally am a sucker for second chance romances and this definitely won my heart over.
Autumn and Sebastian started off as friends when they were children and once they grew up, their friendship turned to real love. They were definitely the equivalent of LOVE. They were inseparable and were always together. Brody, Autumn's brother was Sebastian's best friend and they were always up to shenanigans. Always finding ways to get into some type of trouble, well that led to an unfortunate circumstance that would eventually impact all their lives.
Sebastian left their little town without a word from Autumn and he tried as best as he could to move on with his life. When he had to return to their little hometown (5 years later), he saw a glimpse of the girl that he has always loved and continued to love. Sebastian knew in that instant that his love for Autumn was just as strong as it was before he left.
So, the question is, can Autumn and Sebastian find their way back to each other? Can they sit down and talk about what really happened 5 years ago and why they ended up apart all those years?
This definitely had my heart swooning. Sebastian couldn't get any more perfect than what he already was. Autumn really wasn't my kind of heroine, but I loved how her and Sebastian were trying to work things out, mend the broken parts of their lives.
**Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
This one has me a bit speechless. I picked it up from a rec in reader group and sat on it for months. Kicking myself for waiting so long to start it. This book was heartbreaking and amazing all in one. I loved the way their story developed and how they rebuilt their relationship. And don't even get me started on the cuteness that is Aria - she melted my heart. While I did find the way the parents acted to put Seb and Autumn in their current predicament slightly unbelievable I still really adored this story. Got me all up in my feels. 4.5 Stars for me.
Nothing sucks me in faster than a secret baby story - it doesn’t even matter if I’m in the middle of another book I’m enjoying, I will drop that one like a hot potato and dive in. I will then proceed to plow through the new secret baby trope book - this time, Waiting for Autumn - in less than 24 hours.
Sebastian and Autumn grew up together, and grew from neighbors to friends to lovers. But one horrible accident caused a rift and sent Sebastian running. Five years later, another horrible event has Sebastian heading back home, where he decides to face some of his ghosts from the past. It doesn’t go exactly as he hoped, but he’s older and wiser now and is able to put some of his demons to rest.
Until Autumn walks back into his life, bringing hope of reconciliation, but also the shocking news that he has a four year old daughter.
I loved how this book dealt with this revelation in such a believable, realistic way. These characters behaved far more maturely than I would expect a young adult couple to be portrayed in a novel of today, and it was refreshing to read a book that was absent the usual melodramatic angst of today’s young adult romance. This was a couple that actually talked to other people, and to each other. Both Autumn and Sebastian struggled with their actions and feelings about everything that happened between them.
“How can I be so right and so wrong, all at the same time?” “Because real life doesn’t come with a rule book and red pen, Autumn. There are five thousand different explanations on the way from right to wrong, and most things fall somewhere in between the two. It’s entirely possible to be the victim and the thief, and you’re allowed to have feelings about both. What you can’t do is negate everyone else’s perspective but your own.”
I love when a fiction book is able to give us real truths about life. Things rarely are black and white, and you’re allowed to feel how you feel about what has happened to you. But you also have to let others feel how they feel.
Waiting for Autumn did such a good job teaching about accepting your past mistakes and doing your best to move forward. The hero was especially patient with the heroine, and the heroine easily accepted that what she believed was the truth was not actually the truth. I loved how their path back together was slowly built and that they didn’t jump right back into bed together. Yes, the chemistry between them was still there, but cooler, rational heads prevailed. (There was none of this “my heart is still ripped to shreds but who cares because he’s so hawt” malarkey - for which I am everlastingly grateful!)
But as much as I liked this story, it had some fairly significant drawbacks, in my opinion. The story was told in past and present chapters, which is a difficult way to present a story, and I’m not sure it worked completely here. Having finished the book, I still have a bunch of questions. Like...what exactly went down when Autumn found out she was pregnant? What has her life been like since she had Aria? Have either of them been with anyone else, or did they spend their whole time apart longing for each other? For the most part, this author stayed away from all the cliche storylines and new adult behaviors that rub me the wrong way (like not communicating and repeated inner thoughts about body parts), but I would have liked a little more about their time apart, and to feel more of their anguish about their past. Absent those details, I only felt a smidgen of sadness for the heartbreak these two surely experienced.
Regardless of this book’s shortcomings, I still enjoyed it, and will keep my eye out for more from J.A. DeRouen. It’s always a good thing to find an author who can pen (type?!) a good story and stay away from the typical trite storylines that are so prevalent in today’s offerings!
“Love doesn’t always look like you think it should. Doesn’t make it any less real.”
Some books take a few pages to get into, *shrugs* some even a chapter or two... *hiccups*
This story *points at e-reader*, this flipping story, held me captive, *shakes head* no scratch that, held my heart captive from the opening line. The emotion leapt off the pages and hit me right in the solar plexus *sighs*
Teenagers all have an air of invincibility about them, don’t they? *nods* It’s a shock to the system when we realise that isn’t so...
All it takes is one rash decision for Seb and Autumn’s lives to change irrevocably. Fast forward five years and life hasn’t been easy for either of them. Guilt and regret are heavy emotions indeed, and the weight of both is starting to take its toll. How can you embrace the future with the important parts of you stuck in the past?
Whether you believe in Fate or not, she seems to be working her magic with these two *snorts* by bringing them back into the same orbit.
In the same orbit they may be, but with deep-seated hurt on both sides, and an explosive secret still to be revealed, plain sailing this is NOT! *smirks*
Yet, the overwhelming feeling emanating from both Seb and Autumn is love.
Crap!
I’m gonna start bubbling again just thinking about it.
Jjjuu... just give me a minute...
*mutters to self*
Repeat after me - you are fine, Laura!
*fans eyes*
I’m okay, I’m okay. Honest *crosses fingers*
“You and me? We just are.”
Oh flip, I’m going again...
While I still have my composure intact, I just want to say one more thing. This story highlighted a truth I have come to know as fact, especially in the last year. Family is made up of more than blood relations, family are those that we can rely on in times of need. Those people that have our backs no matter what. When you find that tribe? Love them hard. Coz that kind of love? It’s priceless.
Waiting for Autumn was an effortless read and my first ever pick by this author. I fervently hope this is not the last we hear of these characters because I can definitely see another story brewing *coughs* Lexi! *coughs* Brady!
I can hand on heart say that WFA has secured a place on my #2018mustreads
