Parables are some of the most familiar stories in the Bible, yet their interpretations and applications are anything but uniform. Scandalous Stories is a "sort" of commentary on these familiar stories, one that is steeped in God's offensive grace and mercy for sinners and saints alike.
I would give the content of this book 5 stars, as almost every chapter have me new ways of looking at the very familiar parables of Jesus and much to consider. However, I must take away a star for the quality of proofreading and publishing. The publisher has a blurb that says they are dedicated to producing “high quality” theological resources. While reading this book, about every third or fourth page was loose and would fall out. Terrible binding. Beyond that, there are numerous misspelled words, missing words, or incorrect (autocorrected?) words. In the final chapter alone there are at least half a dozen of these errors. (Far too many for a small 9 page chapter.) I would highly recommend the book, but wish a revised and corrected edition would be published.
Phenomenal book on a number of Christ's parables with fascinating insight to their meaning. Quite eye opening in the depth of explanation--some I've never heard explained in such a way. These all ring truer than any "mansplaining" that so many do to make these about humans, instead of about God. For those who use their explanations to justify legalism, you are doing it wrong. Instead, parables are to teach us of a God who loves us so much that He condescends and does humaning better than any of us are able to, and then He gives his life that we may have life more abundantly in Him. A very uplifting read!
WOW!...found this book on a fluke while searching for material for a Bible study I facilitate...will NEVER read these parables in the same way again....Price writes in a manner easy to read and expresses bullet points that come to flower the more you consider them....for those who have heard the parables in Matthew, Mark and Luke preached on a myrial of times, I urge you: examine them again through these commentaries....there is fresh and life giving perspective indeed....
You should go out and buy it, or download it to your Kindle, audiobook whatever. It opened my eyes to things I had not seen before; confirmed things I already knew and explained things I have been puzzled about for years ( the Keith Green song for one...spoiler alert. Keith got it wrong )
We need to hear the message of Gods grace is free and not earned! ... these parables are often mis- read and it is so refreshing to hear Sorenson and Price explain Jesus is the centerpiece of the parables!
I absolutely love the commentary it’s beautiful, faithful and humbling. I’ve been reading these parables all my life, yet they have managed to give me a new perspective on each one. Thank you to the authors.
Excellent. I agree with the reviewer who mentioned some editorial issues. That said, the content and deeper explanations of Jesus's parables is faith strengrhening.
