What happens when Interracial Love and Afrocentrism collide?
All Dylan Hamilton knows is that he loves the vivacious and vibrant Laila Renaud, and would do anything to make her happy; including support her decision to work at the firm owned by his arch nemesis, Michael Sawyer.
All Laila Renaud knows is that Dylan Hamilton means the world to her, and there has never been another man to love and support her, the way he does.
But the minute Michael Sawyer lays eyes on Dylan's prized possessions - both his woman and his firm - his blinding rage and jealousy ignite, driving him to bring an end to their 'unnatural' relationship and force Dylan to his knees.
Will Dylan and Laila be able to defend their special love?
Or will Michael be successful in getting them to doubt everything they think they know about each other... and themselves?
I reeeaallly enjoyed that the author delved into some real life challenges biracial couples face as well as what it means to be black in America. In this space of time, challenges that black women and black men face are really ringing through well. Personally, I feel like she started the conversation, but then did not realistically finish it. Like it brought up some real issues, between Dylan and Leila that caused them to split, but then a different problem arose, they rallied for each other and the racial issues never came back up for them to resolve together. That just doesn't magically go away. However, I do appreciate that Dylan was written to be a very understanding and caring man who ultimately would not rest until he got a better understanding of Laila and protective of her as her man...looooooovvvvved that. It would have been nice to see how she held him to the fire about appreciating her differences and acknowledging her real life struggles. Kind of made a mockery of Micheals' passion for the issues he brought up because he had other character flaws, did not like that. The sex scenes were just as frustrating, they start pretty good then they are over or skipped altogether. Super annoying. Want the icing with the cake.
This story had me scratching my head. It was really a miss for me. Laila turned into some stupid, clueless woman who doesn't know a single thing about the world until someone pointed it out to her and that disappointed me to no end. 'Ethnic hair'? African dresses?! Really, woman ? What kind of white nonsense is it????!!! Michael was a walking caricature of the 'angry and spiteful black man' who made a mockery of blackness with all of is afro centric mumbo jumbo about 'brothers' and 'sisters'. And the whole Dylan learning about Laila's background had me rolling my eyes hard! And don't get me to the business side of that drama that was unrealistic as possible. Like girlfriend got promoted after 3 months to the Board and then flipped it like she's been doing it for decades???! What a waste of perfectly decent characters.
I like this series and hardly wait for Trois, ... At times I could shake Laila, I understand that she wanted to make it on her own, but she took it too far. And Michael is so friggin misguided with his twisted sense of righteousness, maybe he is related to Al Sharpton. Lol Glad, she finally got her shit together, and please let them get their moment, they have been through so much. ( worried about the 3 uninvited guests)... Very good!!
The story grabbed my attention and held it to the very end, such a good read! Great storyline and I love Dylan and Liala's relationship/love. I received this book as an ARC, so I'll have to go back and read book 1 because I was not aware that there was another, but I look forward to reading more from the author.
The completion of Dylan and Liala 's story was dramatic for sure. It aS kinda a crazy how Liala changed over night really....I don't know about anyone but I sure wasn't cutting my long hair off for no one including myself!!! Anyway it enjoyed it anyway and look forward to the next in thevseries.
While being a beautiful and powerful story of strength, love & perseverance. It also shows many sides of struggles. It gives understanding of different perspectives. I really appreciate the viewpoints it explores. More people seeing these issues clearly is exactly what our world needs. Very powerful and controversial topics!
Yes it was worth the wait! Brooklyn Knight keeps delivering awesome characters and adventures. Dylan and Laila are a sexy fun couple, fighting to keep their once in a lifetime love!
This was sexy and really powerful. Especially in this world of some many black men with white woman. I must say I liked Michael 's attitude but not his tactics
The main female character acts like she’s a girl she a grown woman but very naive and immature. The way her mind works I wanted to slap her some time she doesn’t deserve Dylan he’s to good for her
This is book 2 in this exciting series. I recommend one reads book 1 so one can truly understand what’s going on. I love how the characters emotions and backgrounds come more out in this book . Book 3 is next!
The story was compelling, a page-turner. The problem I had with the tale was the heroine was (still) immature and insecure in her love for the hero. This insecurity carried on and on throughout the book. I couldn’t understand what redeeming qualities she had that merited the hero’s love. While the hero was lovable, he was weak in his interactions with the heroine, lots of whining in this part 2. He was entirely too devoted to her. What a twist if he had found someone more dedicated and mature.
The bad guy being African American bothered me a little. Yes, there were African American men who were good guys, the supporting stars of the saga. However, villain African American men is such a common theme in BWWM books.
Overall the story was interesting; it was a good read. The rivalry between two similarly successful men, the “awakening” of the hero to the heroine's heritage. A fun soap opera.
I'll start by saying . I initially liked Laila ,but when she got in the I want to crave my own path thing, and didn't want to accept help from Dylan I got kinda tired. Whenever you are starting out on any venture you need help, but you have to be willing to accept it. I think she should have trusted him more, not that he didn't make mistakes of his own but I think if someone is telling you to keep your guide up pertaining to people that they have history with or they know in general than take in to consideration. I couldn't finish it.
