‘They say that is ‘better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.’
I call that bullshit.
Some people would argue that the experience of loving and losing a person is worth it. It’s for the experience, they say.
I disagree.
To lose someone you care for immensely is the worst feeling in the world. I’d take kidney stones or a broken arm over the depression and the sharp heartache that follows me around any day.
When you break an arm, you get up and you get it fixed. With a broken heart, you’re stuck with the memories forever.
You carry around the shadows that are left over from losing the one you loved…and they never seem to go away.’
I was human once, but than I died, and when I died, I was chosen to become and angel, to protect the Earth and all of its inhabitants.
Violet Ashton is a special kind of angel. She hunts the things that go bump in the night, horrors that you couldn’t dream up even in your worst nightmares. Any creatures, or demons, which manage to escape from the Underworld are tracked down and killed. And Violet’s record is as flawless as they come, ninety-nine kills…and counting.
And it’s her next kill that counts the most.
I couldn’t get a proper reading from her eyes, they flickered constantly between various emotions. Love. Hate. Desire. Sadness. If I waited a second longer, it’d probably be death.
Lucas Cross is many things – demon, eye candy, One of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, to name a few. Funnily enough, he also happens to be an ex-angel, as well as Violet’ ex-mentor and ex-lover.
Which makes Violet’s mission to kill him slightly more complicated.
Not only did Lucas teach her everything she knows about demons and killing them, making him a fierce opponent, but even the sight of him is enough to draw the breath from her lungs. He looks the same, sounds the same even…but as much as it kills her, Violet knows hat he isn’t the Lucas Cross she knew.
He’s a demon. He’s Death. He’s her one-hundredth kill.
And not even love is enough to stay her hand if it comes down to saving the world…or saving the man she used to love.
"I’m not going to kill you because I hate you. I’ll kill you because I love you…and I know that it’s what the old you would’ve wanted.” I ran the back of my hand down the side of her face. “You know nothing of what I want.”
Love and hate wage war as both sides – Never Dark realm and Underworld – fight for domination. Violet must decide what she is fighting for, and what she wants, before it’s too late…for everyone.
A gripping tale of love found, lost, and reclaimed, Dark Wings provides readers with an irresistible world of action and raw desire.
Disappointed. The synopsis sounded so good but the book was :( i felt like there was no proper organisation of thoughts and scenes. It felt like bunch of good ideas were just thrown together randomly. Also, felt like there were some unnecessary details that, if left out, wouldn't have made a difference. It just made me feel like skipping pages :(
Dark Wings is a steamy read of good vs. evil. It shows that true love never dies, that love conquers all, even evil.
Violet and Lucas were both angels; they trained together, and Lucas was Violet's mentor. They fell in love, but Lucas was forced to join his brothers as Death, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, in order to save Violet's life. After that, neither one were ever the same.
After a few years, Violet volunteers to kill Death, even though she still loves him. This was one of the things that didn't make sense to me - I think it would be almost impossible to kill the person I love, no matter how evil he is. But, that may just be me - I'm not a kick ass demon killer like Violet. As she tracks and fights Lucas, they both are unable to follow through and kill the other. A few times, they are caught up in a passionate frenzy, and realize they still love one another. Lucas saves Violet from one of his brothers, and asks her to become a demon so that they can be together. Violet says no, and Lucas honors her request, even though he has the opportunity to turn her against her will, he doesn't, demonstrating that love conquers all.
I loved this story, but I would've loved some more steam between Violet and Lucas; they had so much sexual tension, and could've succumbed to their passion so many more times. All in all, I enjoyed the read, and hope Violet and Lucas can be together again some day.
I plot was interesting I liked the idea if the Romeo and Juliet type romance. I think the flash back were my favorite part. The reason for the two stars was because there was a lot inner monolog and frankly to much scene description. Found myself skipping paragraphs without any conversations in them.
This was really good. This is about love that is not meant to be. Sadly by the end there wasn't a HEA. I was completely bummed. I had hope that there would have been some kind of miracle that brought these two together.
Fairly straightforward plot. Little awkward in some places. The characters are a little flat for my tastes but overall a nice little popcorn read. Looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story in the next volume.
The love of your life gets turned into a demon ... and not just any demon ... one of the four horsemen bent on world destruction. You're tasked with hunting him down and ending his life.
What do you do?
The book started off rocky for me, and I almost gave up on it, but glad I stuck with it. It's a short/fun read. If you're looking for a bright, exciting new world, this isn't the book. She barely touched on the world-building, which I feel could have really pushed this book up to five stars.
Pros -I actually liked the main character. She was tough and wasn't one of those to let the love interest push her around (though he tried). -The action was good. -The storyline was interesting, though I think she could have really expanded on it a lot more, but for the first book, I liked it.
Cons -VERY long paragraphs, holy crap. I ended up skipping some scenes because my eyes twerked all over the pages. -The world building was weak, which sucked because I found the premise quite interesting. -The dialogue felt forced in some instances between some characters.
Overall, it wasn't a bad read and I think I will check out the next installment.

You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA

Angels. Demons. Different worlds. Forbidden romances. Old flames.
There’s not much to dislike in Skyla Madi’s Dark Wings, but I’ll admit to reading hesitantly in the beginning. Though I found the start of this book a bit choppy, in term of writing – grammar and style, paragraphs began to smooth out a few chapters in, and then the story and characters captivated me so much that I barely remembered any problems I once had.
Why? Because Madi knows what she’s doing here. Violet is a kickass female character who still has a feminine side and who is sometimes unsure of her thoughts and actions. Lucas is a man who I both hated to love and loved to hate because he knows he’s powerful and a jerk and sometimes embraces the traits, sometimes loathes who he is. Together, this former-couple-turned-enemies-turned-who-knows-what is a force to be reckoned with. They gripe at each other. They kick each other’s asses. And they have passion for each other.
Boy, do they have passion for each other. Touches and looks are smoldering and worthy of fanning one’s self while reading. It’s not just hot scenes, but the tension that builds often between Violet and Lucas is just as satisfying – just like every facet of this novel. With frantic adventures, a steamy romance, and an exciting war to follow, Dark Wings is is a book everyone should pick up and read – and together, we can wait impatiently for the next installment of the Never Dark series.

Leave behind every thought or idea you have of angels. Leave behind the halos, clouds, and singing the Hallelujah Chorus.
Instead you’ve got Violet, an angel warrior who has killed 99 demons, and the fallen angel Lucas, who now goes by the name Death. Violet is sent to kill Lucas but their history is posed to get in her way.
I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. The author skillfully maneuvers Violet away from the stereotypical strong female character by infusing her with depth. Violet has feelings and insecurities, keeping her relateable while still kicking a lot of ass.
Lucas is dark, sexy, and twisted. He’s everything you would want in a bad guy and love interest. As he battles his feelings for Violet you began to feel some sympathy for him. By the end of the book, through the sacrifices he makes, I was rooting for him.
I was also impressed by the minor characters. They brought life to her world and helped to immerse the reader. Whether it’s the humans Violet encounters, Lucas’ creeptastic demon brothers, or the other angels there was a feeling that they were well thought out and helped to complete the book.
In short, it’s a dark, sexy, action packed romp and I enjoyed it. The play on angel mythology was fun and different. I got caught up in Violet and Lucas’ story and I’m waiting on pins and needles for the next one.

The light of heaven and darkness of hell clash under the guise of love.
Skyla Madi’s Dark Wings is about the bright and dark side of love. Violet Ashton is a two-star angel for the Never Dark realm, looking for her 100th demon kill. Her latest mission is on Earth, where the feud between The Underworld is at its peak. Death, a category five demon is within Violet’s sight. And while normally, an angel would run for backup, she has taken it upon herself to confront him. But Death isn’t just any demon, he is Lucas, a fallen angel, her former mentor, and her former lover.
Madi’s Dark Wings is based loosely on the Four Horsemen, Hell’s demons of might and ferocity. It was interesting to see a different side of these evil beings. It was refreshing, in a very enjoyable way to read about the struggles of love and romance, and not just have an instant connection or love affair. I loved seeing the struggles, the ups and downs, as well as all of the negative arguments of staying in love.
Violet is what every woman strives to be. A strong female who is independent and assured of herself. And like many women, there is a small part of her self that is vulnerable, especially when it comes to love. In Violet’s case, Lucas is that vulnerability. She had to question her morals, her choices in life, and even her future to put everything into perspective. Her voice was realistic, and it was heart breaking to read. I sympathized with Violet, as a woman and as someone in love.
Lucas was surprisingly easy to relate to. As Death, I thought that he would have been the antithesis of Violet. I thought he would be her downfall and that she would become like many women I read about in romances. But it was the opposite; Lucas was the one variable that gave Violet strength.
I enjoyed Dark Wings for its action, its romance, and the deep connections that were made. The redemption written within the story is well worth the heartache, and the romance is what will make you love these characters. I highly urge you to read Dark Wings by Skyla Madi.

**This book was provided free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
At A Glance I just didn't see the point to this book. Didn't like the male love interest and the ending was so disappointing.
The Good I gave this two stars instead of one star mostly because it started out good. It felt like any other paranormal romance. The world was amazeballs. The concept felt unique for the angel/demon genre. The plot was pretty good as well.
Violet was pretty kickass in the beginning. I love how she wasn't afraid of fighting bigger and badder things. And watching her having to fight and maybe kill her ex-lover turned demon was hard. I felt so bad for her. I felt her pain.
The Bad This felt very much like a paranormal romance, but then it got a little distorted and the ending felt off for me. Lucas was such a horrible person and horrible to Violet I just could never get into him. I did like him all cocky and snarky but most of his behavior was such a turnoff. If I can't like the male lead then how can I enjoy this supposable PNR? And I still can't figure out why Violet let Lucas get away with so much. Near the end Violet was whiny and pathetic. Desiring Lucas blurred her focus and I thought less of her because of it. And I don't want to give anything away but I expect a certain kind of ending in my PNRs and Dark Wings did not deliver in that area. Why did I read this whole story to have it end like that? I felt like there was no point to reading this book.
Then, the whole angel council thing was disappointing and annoying. Why would anyone want to be an angel with horrible dictators like that running everything? They were as bad as the demons. I hated not having a side to root for.
The Snuggly The sexy time was good. Not a lot of it but that was fine. I did feel the long ago and rekindling love between Violet and Lucas. But with how it ended I had to close myself off from this couple. Overall, for a new adult to adult audience.
Final Thoughts I really saw no reason to have read this story by the end. The technical parts of Dark Wings were fine, I just disliked the characters and the ending too much to find this book worthy. I wouldn't recommend this book to others but I have read Madi's Guardian Angel Series and really liked it. Try that one instead.
Quotes Angels destroyed them all [vampires] decades ago, every last sparkly one of them, and you're welcome.
Violet watched me quietly, her eyes flickering between hate and love. It was then I knew she'd come here to kill me.
"I’m not going to kill you because I hate you. I’ll kill you because I love you…and I know that it’s what the old you would’ve wanted.” I ran the back of my hand down the side of her face. “You know nothing of what I want.”
Dark Wings is one of those novels that is hard to review just because there is so little to say about it. That’s not to say that it was a bad novel but it was just an unremarkable one. From the characters to the plot there just wasn’t anything special about this novel that made it really stand out to me. Even though I liked it, because there wasn’t really anything to dislike, it just wasn’t a novel that I could really get into.
The shining aspect of Dark Wings was the fascinating world building. Madi did a great job creating a believable and interesting world and I absolutely loved learning more about the Never Dark and the back story of how Violet became an angel. I really liked Madi’s version of heaven and angels and the intricate society of the Never Dark, as well as the angel’s interactions with humans. Even though the plot wasn’t really anything new it was interesting enough and the history between Violet and Lucas made for an entertaining story and I enjoyed the sprinkling of action and romance throughout the novel.
Although the characters weren’t exactly two-dimensional I also found that they weren’t completely fleshed out either. Maybe it was because of the shorter length of the novel but I felt like the characters were one their way but they just weren’t there yet. While I enjoyed reading from Violet’s point of view I absolutely loved reading from Lucas’s point of view. Maybe it was his circumstances or his personality but I just really enjoyed getting a look inside of his mind. Likewise I really enjoyed his side of the back story between him and Violet, something about his character just rang a little bit more true than Violet.
My biggest complaint with the novel was the choppy writing at the beginning of the novel. When I first started this novel I was a little frustrated by how little the writing seemed to flow but as the novel went on Madi’s writing greatly improved and that made it much easier to get into the story. The novel also had its fair share of slow spots but that’s because of all the back story and introductions to the world; I could understand the purpose but it did make a few moments of the novel drag a little bit.
Overall Dark Wings wasn’t a bad read, but I just didn’t find anything exciting or new about this novel. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it I wouldn’t completely write it off either. Readers looking for a short, paranormal read may be interested in this one but don’t be expecting anything new or exciting.
This was such an interesting take on angels! I had no idea what to expect going into this but I did enjoy it. Violet is the snarky, sarcastic heroine, and she’s also an angel. Lucas is the former angel turned demon, also known as Death from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The book is told in both their POVs, which was great, since I loved getting to see both their perspectives, the emotional angst from them.
Violet is a very… interesting character. She’s a bit too harsh and critical of things for my liking, but I enjoyed her brashness and toughness. She’s a pretty badass angel. She fights very well (she’s already killed 99 demons!) and isn’t afraid to fight bigger and badder things. The best part about her is the emotional turmoil going on when she sees her former lover, Lucas, who’s now… evil. She loved him once, back when he was an angel and, well, good, but now… she has to kill him. Isn’t that just the most intriguing thing ever? Having to kill the love of your life because he turned evil. Like, wow.
I think I liked reading Lucas’s POV more than Violet’s, because he didn’t grate on my nerves as much as Violet did. Plus, he’s got even more angst inside of him. He’s a freaking demon, but used to be good. He’s still in love with Violet, but he’s got evil urges within him that make his want to kill her and pretty much everything else in the world. He has to hold himself back, because he doesn’t want to kill Violet. What he wants is her, but a relationship between them now is even more forbidden than it already was before Lucas turned dark. Like I said, SO much angst.
When Lucas and Violet see each other again, the feelings they have between them are explosive. They want to kill each other one second, and lust for each other the next. There was both love and hate, and you never knew what you were going to get each time they saw each other. The story is very fast paced, with fight scenes and sexy scenes throughout. If you’re looking for an action-y, paranormal romance with a little bittersweetness, then you should definitely check out Dark Wings. There’s also going to be a sequel in The Never Dark series called Torn Wings!
First, before I start this review, I just want to apologize to Skyla Madi (the author) for the massive wait ever since she sent me the ARC in June. I couldn't find the time since it was nearly the end of school and I had to pack for holiday and all of that. I tried to push it up the ARC TBR list but seriously, everything was just too busy. So I just wanted to apologize :)
Now, onto the book. DARK WINGS was such a page turner, seriously! I only just started it a hour ago and completely DEVOURED it!! I couldn't stop, like at all. I didn't stop, not even once. I just couldn't pull my eyes off the computer (I think I might need glasses after this..lol). I was always a sucker for Heaven and Hell, angels and demons stuff so Dark Wings did not disappoint at all.
Violet Ashton is an angel, not the sort of guardian angel who gets assigned to protect people, she's the sort of angel who kills demons. So in shorter words, she's a kick-ass angel who knows how to kick a guy in the balls. LOL!! I love Violet's character! She's strong, brave, much like those girls who I am accustomed to. There were points when she was vulnerable and weak, and even though she's an angel, she's allowed to be those things.
DEATH!! In other words, Lucas-aka-death-aka-hotness-overload-in-suits!! Seriously! Yes, he is the bad guy, but who cares?! Good girls fall for the bad guy! It's life! Anyway, Lucas is such a charming asshole (excuse my language), but I fell for him anyway. Like Violet, he also has vulnerable moments, especially when his bad side takes over. Lucas used to be an angel, but then he changed, or fallen, is a better word. But the thing I really love though, was that he might be bad, but he's still fighting for Violet. He also has a good side that I can't help but fall in love with.
Other than the awesome characters, this book was packed with action an thriller. There were scenes where I just want to jump in on the action and be like "Yeah! Girls KICK ASS!", but then I'll get my own ass kicked. LOL!! Skyla did not disappoint me AT ALL! I seriously cannot wait for book 2, TORN WINGS!! The title even had me excited!!
I really enjoyed this book. It will tug at your heartstrings, provide action, and will satisfy any paranormal lover.
Violet and Lucas were once lovers. Not just lovers, but the love of each other’s life. However, destiny calls and the two are ripped apart and are now supposed to be enemies.
Violet is strong. She’s a fighter. But, that’s just because she has built walls around her heart. After Lucas left, she decided she wasn’t going to let anyone get to close ever again, as a friend or a lover. Her focus is on hunting demons and being the best at what she does. All of that changes when she fails her mission: kill Lucas. She thought she had gotten over him enough to complete the job, but when she sees him again old feeling are awakened. What’s more is that she realizes that she has been living a shell of a life. She begins letting people in and actually starts enjoying life a bit.
Lucas is now a demon. He’s very torn demon. He is constantly fighting against the evil inside of him and trying to preserve some of who he was. Regardless, he’s learned to live the life of a demon and has actually become comfortable with it. That is until he sees Violet again. She’s the woman he can’t let go. The reason he is so torn. He loves her; he hates her. He just doesn’t know anymore. The love and passion between these two build and ignite when it becomes impossible to ignore. The lengths Lucas will go to in order to protect his girl will make your heart sigh. I love these two together.
The author has done a great job at pulling together a world of angels and demons, which reside and fight amongst humans. I think she not only wrote a great story, but she also created well rounded characters. This story is a lot more than fighting between the two sides, though. It’s also about relationships, old and new, and learning when it’s time to hold on or let go of those relationships.
Dark Wings by Skyla Madi Review by Wendy 4.5 Stars
Violet "V" is a fighter. She was found by Lucas beaten, near death and he saw the fighter inside her. Lucas made the decision to bring her over to Neverdark, as an Angel. Lucas trained her, mentored, and fell in love with her. Then one day his brothers came for him. His brothers are 3 of the horseman for the apocalypse. They need their 4th and Lucas is it, he is Death. 3 years later "V" is given the orders to kill him. She begged for this assignment. She thinks she's the only one that can bring him down. Will Violets love for Lucas prevent her from killing Death?
Wow! I really liked this story. Talk about star crossed lovers. First the action and fight scenes are great. You are really in the fight yourself. The chemistry between Violet and Lucas is off the charts. The story is told from alternating POV's, so you get in their heads. You really feel for these characters and their ultimate dilemma. I think the secondary characters helped Both Violet and Lucas find the humanity they so desperately need. The story flowed well and the character development for the most part was great. I wish we knew more on why Lucas was the 4th. I am still a little unsure if the brothers (War, Conquest, and Famine) are literally or metaphorically his brothers. Other than that I think the story was well written and look forward to the next installment of the story "Torn Wings" coming in 2014.

3.5 STARS Let me just start out saying that I got this book as a freebie on amazon. Definitely potential here for a great series. Loved the plot idea and the way the author presented and built it up. I must say the whole angel/devil/earth thing is rather intriguing. Also loved the whole angel and devil forbidden love story going on.
However I could not grasp the idea of why anyone would want to be an angel when apart from the fact that they are saving humans from the devils, they are practically controlled by the Council with barely any free will. I mean they are controlled right down to the point that they don't even get to choose what job (desk jobs, fighters etc) they have. I would love to understand more about if why Violet is so against being a demon when being an angel seems pretty horrible.
Would love to see more character development in the sequels as I felt that Violet and Lucas' characters' past, relationship and as a person was only skimmed across. I would also love to learn more about the time period between when Lucas was taken away from the angels to the time he and Violent meets again.
There is definitely room for improvements and developments here. Can't wait to see Violet and Lucas' story develop further. And can I just say how surprised I was when I found out the author is only 20 years old! I certainly did not expect such work from a person this age!
4.5*s I really enjoyed this, to be honest it could have been a longer book but I was still satisfied with what I got. I liked the premise about ex lovers now on opposing sides having being ripped apart by the event that made them enemies but still never having gotten over their love. I liked the idea of the four horsemen being demons/men, I would have liked a bit backstory on their choosing process especially because of the fact that they could choose an angel to become one of them and I would have liked to have read about Lucas's adjustment to his new persona. Violet was a great love interest & opponent for him, I always appreciate the student/teacher falling in love type of storyline and I liked the flashbacks we got to show us how deep their connection was. I did connect with the characters in the short time & felt what they were going through, which is always a good sign. I enjoyed the storyline and what happened throughout, some of the action scenes were great to read. It had excitement, action, danger, romance & redemption - a great combination and as I said, I really enjoyed it and read it in one go. My only grumble would be the ending.... redemption could have gone further.... Just saying :)
This was a really good story about the continuous feud between Angels in The Never Dark Realm & Demons from The Underworld. Violet Ashton is an Angel, from the Never Dark Realm, who has already killed 99 Demons. Lucas Cross was an Angel, but now he is a Demon, from The Underworld, but he is no ordinary Demon. He is DEATH one of the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse. Lucas was Violet’s mentor and lover, but Violet must now go & Kill him. Can she see past her memories & feelings for Lucas & complete her mission, and will Lucas overcome his Demonic side, that wants to kill Violet & destroy the world. The story was well written & very easy to read. The main characters were really likeable and the supporting characters complimented them with a good mixture of humour & annoyance. It worked really well & made a very enjoyable & exciting story. I look forward to reading book #2
Dark Wings rocks!! I love everything about this book. The concept and the flow of the story is great! The characters are also cool. I love how the characters personalities, they are easy to love and they are not boring. I love how they easily captured my interest, especially Lucas!! The drama and issue of the story, it's intriguing. I was intrigue on why Lucas did all the things he' done (being an angel turned demon). And Violet, I love how motivated she was in her mission. Some of the scenes in the story made me crazy, with the witch and Lucas' brothers. AHHH!! The ending of the story is also good, so far I'm happy with it.. Can't wait what will happen next to Lucas and Violet and if they will find the ending they wanted..
Ms. Skyla did a really good job in writing this book. It's good and interesting. I'm happy I read this book, great read and worth it. I will recommend this book to readers who love reading paranormal romance.

I Liked the idea of this book, as far as the Angel, demon love story. After all it's not Lucas fault he is a Angel turned demon. He did it to protect violet, his love and student whom he mentored, as well as turned into an angel to begin with. So the story follows violet and her mission to kill LUCAS to stop the apocalypse. In some ways violet takes this mission to get closure for the love she still feels for LUCAS. what she doesn't count on is LUCAS still has a good side to him, a part of him that is still in love with her, and is still protecting her from his demon brothers. Of course this makes both their lives difficult. The story was cool and all but I was wishing for LUCAS and violet to go up against the council together, especially violet...what a bitch. Who knows maybe in the next book. Not bad on the action value, steamy, dreamy demon, angel love makes for a good read.
Violet is a strong independent woman who has been alone for a long time. The only person she relied on was her mentor Lucas. However Lucas has turned into one of the four horseman. Now that he is a demon she has to figure out how to kill him in order to save Earth.
As far as stories go this is a good one I mean the sacrifice it takes to kill someone your in love with is difficult. I was torn between liking the story and becoming frustrated with the heroine Violet. I mean get a backbone at some [point suck it up....
Overall I liked the story and the characters but it needed more. The details were good I just thought it all didn't come together enough I needed her to have friends and deal with Lucas together not apart. I needed more....
Dark Wings is about the fight between good and evil, with forbidden romance thrown into the mix. I really loved this novel because the plot was captivating. I wanted to give this novel 5 stars, but couldn't because of all of the spelling and grammatical errors. Call me a grammar nazi, but investing in a good proofreader goes a long way for an avid reader such as myself; too many grammatical and spelling errors really takes away from the momentum when reading a story, no matter how good that story is. That being said, I can't wait to read the next installment in this series; hopefully that book will have a better proofreader.
