Light Touch is a standalone prequel novella that introduces the Rhythm of Love world to readers, which centers around characters in the music industry. Each book will be a standalone with appearances by previous characters/couples.

A bar musician and a light-sensitive painter play a game of cat-and-mouse that begins with a song request and comes to a very steamy conclusion at a Halloween party.

Seasoned musician Rufus Merrill hardly notices the crowds he plays to, these days. Ten gallon hats and cowboy boots? Drunken coeds and tourists? They're a dime a dozen. But the black-clad guy leaning up against the wall of the bar in sunglasses after dark? That stands out.

Artist Quinn Marx has had his fill of musicians; past relationships dictate they're a bad idea. But something about Rufus and his music catches Quinn’s attention, and he can't help but put in a special request for a song just for the hell of it. Maybe just to give the guy a challenge. One kiss in a dark alley later, and they're both hooked.

Neve Wilder lives in the southern U.S., where the summers are hot and the winters are...sometimes cold. She is a mom to three rambunctious weebeasts who have joined forces in a mission to carpet the family home with toys and small items that really suck to step on at six in the morning.

She reads promiscuously, across multiple genres, but her favorite stories always contain an element of romance. Incidentally, this is also what she likes to write. Slow-burners with delicious tension? Yes. Whiplash-inducing page-turners, also yes. Down and dirty scorchers? Yes. And every flavor in between.

Neve isn't keen on being limited to one type of story or a single genre. If you enjoy slow burns and musicians, the Rhythm of Love series might be up your alley.

You'll find high heat, crackling sexual tension, and a variety of angst levels in the new adult Extracurricular Activities series that begins with Want Me.

Like smart-ass antiheroes and super steamy thrill rides? Stay tuned for the upcoming Wages of Sin series, which begins with Bad Habits.

If you need a good cry, Center of Gravity is a standalone age-gap slow burn that examines grief, enduring love, and imperfect characters doing their best (or worst, as it were) in shitty situations.

Neve fervently believes David Bowie was the sexiest musician to ever live, and she's always game to nerd out on anything from music to writing.

And finally, she believes that love conquers all. Except the heat index in July. Nothing can conquer that bastard.

Light Touch is book #0.5 in the Rhythm of Love series by Neve Wilder. This is a short introduction to this world although not required. Each book is a complete stand alone. This is my very first Neve Wilder book!

Rufus Merrill is a singer/guitarist who performs in small bars at night and works in a vintage album store by day in Nashville. He barely makes ends meet. It’s during one of his gigs that he spots a man standing in the back of the bar. It’s hard to miss him since he’s wearing sun glasses at night. But it’s also because he feels instantly drawn to him, he can’t look away.

Quinn Marx is an artist. He also suffers from a condition called photophobia. His eyes are super sensitive to any light. It was by chance he ended up in the bar that night and heard Rufus play. The attraction was immediate. He couldn’t help but to return on the following night to hear him again. As he goes to leave, Rufus follows him and a very steamy kiss in the alley allows them both to see that whatever it is between them, it is powerful and can’t be ignored.

These two are cute together. This was short and I enjoyed this little introduction to this world. The next book in the series is a full length story called Dedicated. We’ll meet lyricist Les Graves and musician Evan Porter. I can’t wait to jump in.

Oh yeah! Awesome!
This is a bit longer than the other shorts in this giveaway. I lurved it!
Slow-burn(ish), steamy, Halloween romance with ridiculous costumes and sexy banter between the MC's. Dual POV. Enjoyed it a lot.
I give a solid 4 stars! Recommended!

Neve has a knack for writing fully developed novellas. This was a really cute Halloween themed story in the Rhythm of Love universe.
Bar musician meets mysterious artist.

“He was a musician after all, and everyone knew musicians were hornballs.” 😆

“I’m glad you came.” There was no guile in the statement, just pure, unfiltered sincerity on my part, especially after I’d been convinced he wouldn’t show.
“I haven’t, yet. Part of the reason I’m here. You seem to have put my libido on a leash and enjoy dragging it flailing around after you.”

* Available now on Prolific Works!

I hadn’t been able to read this until now, when it became available as a prolific works giveaway. A short steamy novella that introduces the Rhythm of Love universe. Takes place before Les and Evan’s book Dedicated and before Owen and Dan’s book Resonance. When I read Owen’s book last month, I was curious about this friend Ru and boyfriend Quinn. I felt like I was supposed to know them. Turns out I was. From this book. 😂

I wanted to drink him in, spend hours exploring the variant shades of his body. — Quinn Marx

Warnings: None of note.

Light Touch is the story of severely light sensitivity artist Quinn Marx and musician Rufus 'Ru' Merrill. It is told mainly from Ru's perspective, through him we get to know the world and meet Quinn even without knowing his name or story. The story of their meeting is one of my faves. What I do like is the slight flip on the expected dynamic. I didn’t usually bother with musicians. I’d learned my lesson long ago. They were moody egoists, and in my world, there was only room for one moody egoist. Which might have also been the reason I’d been single for months. (Quinn) It isn't the musician with an ego the size of a small planet in this story, it's the artist. No strangers to egos themselves but usually not as frequently in fiction as musos. Quinn is a realist he is the dominating ego and will take no contest, it suits his whole deal really. Ru while having the ego keeps himself grounded, by working a bar and not signing with a label (aka doing it the hard way). This has a really simple flirtation and getting-together plot. It is more of an introduction to the world and some of the characters in it. I do wonder if Neve also wanted to challenge herself by writing a disability with respect.

Some comments and quotes
• There are the beginnings of a discussion on bondage. That isn't the direction that Ru and Quinn's sexual relationship goes but I live for discussion of healthy boundaries and knowing your full compatibility. In a way, I think it totally suits Quinn's want or maybe just enjoyment to control.
There were dozens of other attractive people to look at— Nashville was full of them— but like that game I’d played on road trips as a kid where I searched for cars of a certain color, now he was all I could see. Except if he was a car, with that bone structure and sleek build, he’d have been a vintage Oldsmobile F-88, rare and expensive. — Oh... what a pretty analogy. Neve has a way with words. This description in particular just suits Nashville. (Rufus)
• For those interested. Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Classical Gas by Mason Williams. I'd heard Classical Gas but I didn't know what it was called.
“Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,” he crooned as I approached. His voice wasn’t half-bad. Deep and throaty. No Bob Dylan, but on key and as sexy as the rest of him. — This is the first time Quinn speaks and I think it charmed me more than more first lines. He and Ru have been flirting in their own way for a week by this point (Rufus, spoken words Quinn)
• The scene in the Haunted House is fantastic to me. Weakness in a strong man is something that needs to be shown more. Ru and Quinn have cute costumes. I laughed too hard at Quinn's 🤣 (no spoilers). Ru's of course plays on a nickname 🧛🏼‍♂️.
Ru started laughing, and when I looked down at him, he laughed harder, saying, “This is never gonna happen, is it?”
Marco blinked, taking a step backward. “I… should probably just go.”
“You’re fine.” Ru and I said it in unison, which had us cracking up all over again.
“God, that was creepy. Please don’t ever do that again. So…” Marco cleared his throat, and recentered his attention on me. “I’m just going to ignore Rufus Merrill’s dick— which, I must admit looks quite impressive even in its semisoft state— and ask you: Tequila, yes or no?”
— I told you I adore Marco. This is just one reason why. He walks in on his best friend and a semi-naked guy Quinn really likes and just rolls with it. Marco has an ability to put people at ease I'm totally jealous of. (Rufus, Marco and Quinn)
• Marco is a brilliant best friend. The moment in the living room while Ru and Marco are cleaning up makes me so happy. He is perfectly loyal and does his best to communicate the wish to protect Quinn while supporting his relationship.
“Beautiful,” he murmured. “Like smoke curling up from a fire.”
And inconvenient. And endlessly annoying. But beautiful worked if it meant he kept touching me. My heart swelled and galloped in my chest, and I gave in and closed my eyes. “Photophobia—”
— Not the first but the best time we see Quinn with his glasses off. I adore these mixed interpretations of it. Quinn's Photophobia is what gives him his severe light sensitivity. It's not one I'd read before, the closest being probably prosopagnosia in Holding Up the Universe (also a severe case). (Rufus and Quinn)

As promised by Neve we do meet characters from future Rhythm of Love books. We know of Les Graves from Dedicated, Quinn's ex, the one that made him swear off musicians. He is matched with his Porter & Graves bandmate Evan. Resonance. I adore Owen okay. We have only a couple of interactions with him. But he's just a ball of light and energy, fuelled almost entirely by sugar. He's the series twink, according to Quinn at least. He is matched with his boss at Grim's Record Repository, Dan Grim. I like the last lines of the blurb. "It’s a steamy slow burn bisexual age-gap, boss/employee romance with lots of banter and two obstinate heroes who really, really don’t want to want the very thing they both need."

I got this one free in one of the many book giveaways I got books from recently. But unlike some of the novellas, I downloaded this is one I would have been happy to pay for. Ru and Quinn have this brilliant game going on. Their game of cat and mouse that I haven't seen in a while. It uses disability well though I would suspect that Quinn has a severe case of it. As with so many of the novellas I'm ready recently 4⭐ because I wish it was just a little longer. I wanted to spend more time with these two and their chemistry.

But sunglasses at night? Yeah, that registered.
I spotted the guy near the back of the bar, leaning up against the wall, all casual, polished insolence, near the dim hallway to the restrooms where a few of Howie’s can lights had burned out. Dark hair and a handsome, angular face filled in by shadows. Around him, the lively bar hummed with people making trips back to the counter, trekking between tables, or dancing, but he stood there in a perfect stillness, alone and statuesque, those sunglasses masking his gaze.

A nice introduction to the characters in Neve Wilder's Rhythm of Love world. Sweet and light, with an unexpected touch of tenderness on the two characters. Can't wait to start on Dedicated, book 1 of this series.

This was a cute intro into Ru and Quinn's backstory - I really liked both of them in Resonance and it was fun to see how they came together. The take was really interesting and well written.

I do think I'm glad I read this *after* Resonance - I was way more invested in them as characters already. If I'd read it before the two main books in the series I just don't think I'd have cared as much.

The writing was compelling; I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the romance arc; they have great chemistry and the arc fit the length of the story well, didn't try to do more than there was room for. The parts of the story that were about music were really engaging. But I was troubled by the disability representation, especially the throwaway disability cure in the epilogue. But also by the way the disabled MC seemed to be reduced to his photophobia by his love interest; it made me uncomfortable.

I really liked the initial tension between Rufus and Quinn. Their chemistry was on point. That was honestly the highlight of the novella for me. The sex scenes didn't feel as exciting in comparison. Overall, a solid but not memorable enough novella.

Really enjoyed this introduction to the Rhythm of Love series. I adore it when when two people act on an attraction and they go into it by just wanting to scratch an itch and then it turns into so much more. It's one of the best things in life when you're attracted to someone and they return your feelings and then the whole dance starts where you feel each other out and you can't get enough of them and you become addicted... Rufus and Quinn's journey was told so well here and I loved the setting of the book in the music industry and also in the local record store where Ru works. A great start to the series with some intriguing characters mentioned like Les, who I'm sure will have an really interesting story.

Light Touch (Rhythm of Love 0.5) (2018) By Neve Wilder is a great and very engaging novella.

The story is about the romance between musician Rufus Merrill and artist Quinn Marx. Quinn requests a song that is difficult to play on the guitar and this begins Rufus’ and Quinn’s playful flirting. After which a smooching session in an alley ensues and well a lot more at a Halloween party Quinn is hosting.

I really like the book. The characters of Rufus and Quinn are great and they flow and work very easy as a couple. I love how they are both creative and I could relate in my own way to that feeling of being creative and being creative and not rich. There was a lot of things to them that I kind of understood who the characters were, where they are coming from. Quinn and Rufus have great humor with each other too which works well.

The flow of this read is gorgeously done. The plot takes hold of your interest and from there it is difficult to stop reading. It is that engrossing that I was meant to only read a chapter or so of this book then do some writing and come back to it but in two sittings I read the whole book and didn’t get much writing done that day. It’s very enjoyable and you find yourself wanting to know what will happen next.

I also liked Owen who worked with Rufus. So I was very pleased to see at the back of the book that he and Dan are getting their own book Resonance which is defo on the TBR list.

Great pacing throughout, a fabulous read.

3.5 ⭐

I am trying to understand why this is a novella. You have two very strong and interesting characters and all we get is a sample? They have the storylines and the chemistry to have a full novel. So why don't they?

I think this book might get an unfairly high rating because it was good...but where is the rest of the story?

I loved the banter between Quinn and Rufus (he could have a better name though). I wanted to learn more about Quinn's photophobia and see them do cute ass shit as a couple. Also, did Rufus finally choose a label or will he forever be a lounge singer?

There are so many unanswered questions but equally memorable moments. James and Halloween night are definitely hard to forget.

At this point, I'm just mad that a good story was turned into an insta-love prequel.

3.5 rounded up

Fun novella set in the Rhythm of Love Universe. I read this one directly after book 2 (and ages after I'd read book 1) and it was fun to see more of the background characters that actually felt quite present in book 2. I enjoyed this one, and there was some really interesting concepts and a lovely connection between the MCs, but I didn't feel like I *quite* connected to the characters. It was a decent short story, but it felt like there was material here that could have stretched into a novel, and something about the rushing of their relationship, while by no means unenjoyable, was just a smidge unsatisfying. It all felt a little too easy.

With a rock musician who is trying to make it big while working in a music store and a somewhat mysterious guy who seems to be after him, yet not, this is a solid start to a new series. There are enough secondary characters who might get their own stories, and with many, many music references, any fan of rock music will probably like the people as well as the setting. There is lots of relationship drama for both main characters, some hot encounters, a touch of humor, and an encouragingly happy ending.

If you like rock musicians, this might be the book (and series) for you.

This short in the world of Neve Wilder's Dedicated came out at Halloween, before the release of the novel, but I didn't remember I had it until after I'd read Dedicated, so I was familiar with the terrain and some of the characters.
Though it's a novella, Light Touch still has the impact of a longer book. The quality of the writing is just as high and the characters are just as well-developed. I enjoyed this side-trip into Nashville and Dan Grim's record shop, and can't wait for more.

Great novella involving two extremely likable main characters: Ru, a struggling musician, who meets Quinn, an intriguing, sexy artist while playing in a bar. This novella comes after Dedicated the first in this series. Author Neve Wilder’s style of writing has made her books an automatic one-click for me. Instant attraction, Halloween, and a promise of a future together made Light Touch a five-star read for me.

Scoville rating: 🥵🥵🥵🥶🥶 3/5

Very nice way to introduce the rhythm of love series with two very likeable characters. I can’t wait to see them in the next books!

There are only 9 chapters and they’re short and sweet! While it’s a bit of a slow burn for novellas, the heat is definitely worth while.

If the destination is chapter 6, I would encourage reading the whole novella as there are other steamy parts that build up to this climactic couple.

Rufus notices Quinn in his dark sunglasses watching him play at a gig. He makes a request, then leaves before the song ends.

They meet again and again, each time playing the cat and mouse game, knowing it’s inevitable they’ll be together. After some interesting guesses, Ru learns that Quinn has photophobia, seeing only in black and white and shadow.

Their one night stand become one and a half, then two, then a new relationship. An edgy fun short story.
