James Munkers: Freak of Nature

Rate this book
Trips to the Lake District are lovely, aren’t they? There’s the tiny bungalow crammed with every conceivable family member. There’s the lake to drown in, and hills to stub your toes on. And the spontaneous ninjas are really bringing the scenery to life. James is on holiday, but weirdness doesn’t take vacations. The end of the world is nigh, his powers seem to be going haywire, and things keep popping up out of nowhere and attacking him. He might have half a chance of dealing with everything if only his meddling family would stay out of the way. But his family are more involved in the strange events than James realises. James Freak of Nature is the second book in a fantasy adventure series for young freaks who enjoy dinosaur hybrids.

The first half of this book was full of teenage behaviour and supernatural happenings that honestly I felt were a little over the top. And I wasn't real happy with how these amazing supernatural happenings were being kept from the responsible adults.
But from the middle of the book it all came together and made perfect sense. I loved the way that all the loose strands from book one were wrapped up at the end. In fact, I got so involved in the story that I couldn't put the book down. Then, when I'd finished, I thought I'd read from the middle again to make sure I hadn't missed anything and I read the whole thing in one sitting again.
So it's a fantastic read. Lots of fun for younger readers.

A delightful book that I read in a single day. This is the second in the series, and reading the first book is recommended before taking on this adventure if you want to understand the history behind some of the secondary characters.
I have a few favourite characters, and there are some that I would like to have a long chat with about the way that they treat the vulnerable teenage hero. James is an unlikely answer to a prophecy about saving the world, but he managed that in book 1 (James Munkers: Super Freak). Now he's trying to make the most of life with his challenging family.
In this book, we get to know the younger members of his family in greater depth and their actions drive the story. James continues to try his best and the story unfolds at a fast pace. From a potentially dismal holiday to an incredible adventure in a few chapters and then the race is on to a satisfactory conclusion.
