Following the death of her husband, Kathryn Ellis becomes the new housekeeper at Hodder Hall, keen to embark on a bright new future… only, her past won’t let her go just yet, and the ghosts that stalk the village threaten to cut her future short.
Eve Myles stars in this original gothic horror from the pen of Guy Adams, comprising six half-hour episodes, produced by the team behind The Confessions of Dorian Gray.
Recently relistened to this. It's the perfect Halloween listen. There are two characters that hinder it slightly (clarissa and Gloria) but in not sure if it's in the writing, the performances or a mix of both. Either way I'd wish the director had asked them to not to dial it up to eleven from the start as there is no where else for them to go once the story progresses and it ruins any kind of grounding in reality. Having said that Eve Mykes is just brilliant and the music and sound design by Robert Harvey are spin chilling. Turn the lights off, put on your headphones and be prepared for some gothic terror!
I really wanted to like this more than I did. The first free adventure was quite promising. Young mourning woman arrives at big creepy gothic mansion. But I really wanted a spooky supernatural story, instead of just "mad" people that come across as ridiculous and a bit funny. I guess it's because I'm so close to menal health issues. I just can't find "mad", partiuclarly mad in a way that never happens in real life to be a good source of horror. I need more than that. The ghosts were nice but the overall plot (and the lack of the gods of frost doing much) I found disappointing.
A full-cast gothic original Big Finish Production starring Eve Myles. Very atmospheric and eerie, with a gorgeous sound design that tantalized the ear, evoking all kinds of Lovecraftian allusions.
(1) Soul Cakes - A wonderful introduction to the setting and characters. Just enough of the gothic to make your skin creep ever so slightly. The cast is terrific and Myles is brilliant. She may be no Gwen from Torchwood, but it’s clear she’s not a person to be trifled with.
(2) They’re Coming - The gothic atmosphere increases, the tension grows. Fascinating characters and a rich setting, all brought to life within a gorgeous soundscape that is eerie and creepy, just like any well developed gothic narrative should be.
(3) Hodder’s Folly - Good stuff. Getting some more background on what is going on here in Hodder Hall. And there’s some odd layering of voices and echoes that I’m not sure I’m interpreting correctly. Thoughts? Haunting? Insanity? But I suppose that uncertainty is part of the intent.
(4) The Lord of Misrule - Definitely gothic, but there’s some odd humor added into the mix. There’s also some weird sound distortion that overlays spirit voices and the events actually occurring. Very odd layering of sound, not sure if it’s just thoughts or if it’s actually representing spirits of the undead. Because of the way the layers are handled, there are times I’m not sure if the intent is to muffle the spirits as if they’re speaking from the beyond, or if the “real world” is the echo. It’s an odd juxtaposition.
(5) Hide and Seek - I’m feeling like I missed a chapter. Hmm. Nonetheless it’s certainly building toward the big climax.
(6) Solstice - Wow. That was fairly intense. A nice conclusion to a fine horror series.
The story feels a little muddled, but perhaps I just need to listen again. Never the less, I find myself knocking off a point for the disjointed nature of the second half of the narrative. But Eve Myles is brilliant, so I’m giving it back. The download version also includes some interviews with cast and crew, some hilarious outtakes and a gorgeous music suite with selections from the series (not sure if there was an actual CD release at some point).
Eve Myles was great as always, ever the consumate actress. There were parts of the story that were creepy and good, but other parts that didn't make sense.
A very traditional gothic horror story in the best sense of the words, with excellent voice acting. I do love a winter's mystery tale and an isolated spooky mansion.
