Deuce Mora #1-3

Deuce Mora Mystery Series

Rate this book
Three heart-stopping, hard-boiled mysteries at a sizzling price! Save over 50% on the Deuce Mora series! Deuce Mora’s one tough cookie–-a female sleuth with a conscience and an attitude–fiery, tough, athletic, a dirty fighter when she has to be. The scrappy lead columnist for the Chicago Journal normally writes about politics, and, rather than shying away from fights, she tends to pick them, but every once in a while, Deuce’s search for a good story brings her face to face with more trouble than she was really looking for. In Award-winning journalist Jean Heller’s first action-packed mystery featuring the intrepid sleuth, Deuce learns in short order that if you mess with organized crime, you have to be tough—and you’d better be as much detective as reporter. The second volume finds Deuce on the wrong side of the NSA, the FBI and the CIA. At a minimum. Exhausted by these two white-knuckle investigations in one year, Deuce is content to focus on her column until she gains information that could help catch the relentless arsonist whose Burning Rage is consuming Chicago. Fans of hard-boiled female protagonists should hang onto their fedoras-- this one’s an action-packed extravaganza!

"Good reporters do not always good novelists make, but Jean Heller is both." -- The Boston Sunday Globe

"Superb ... It reads like a multimillion-dollar movie thriller." -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“Deuce … finds dead-ends and danger at every turn. Part journalism procedural, part character study, THE SOMEDAY FILE is a humdinger of a mystery, the first of a welcome new series.” --Paul Levine, author of Bum Rap

THE SOMEDAY FILE
Deuce uncovers a series of crimes committed over nearly six decades, and, as her human interest story morphs into a hard-boiled, action-packed mystery, she finds herself dead center in a storm of threats and reprisals from the mob. Fortunately, she has many allies, but at least one of them, she suspects, is hiding a secret–- corruption? Murder? The veteran reporter knows: if you’re talking Chicago crime scene—it’s probably both.

THE HUNTING GROUND
The grisly discovery of a human bone while Deuce is out for a hike with handsome arson investigator Mark Hearst leads to the unearthing of a vast burial field, a human trafficking ring, and international intrigue. The pull-no-punches columnist-- and meticulous detective-- keeps turning up information, but the Journal’s lawyer appears daily, bringing warnings about “national security.” What, Deuce seethes, could be a greater matter of national security than the safety of the city’s children, who are being kidnapped and murdered?

BURNING RAGE
Whole blocks of Chicago real estate are falling to an arsonist, but no one knows why and everyone suspects the worst – terrorism. But no terrorist group has claimed the mayhem. From the moment she hears the earliest details of the first fire, her detective-instincts say the pieces don’t fit, and every other instinct tells the hard-hitting reporter she can’t walk away from the story – even though she knows she’ll regret it.

WHO WILL LIKE IT: Fans of Chicago private investigators VI Warshawski and Libby Fischer Hellman’s Georgia Davis, get-the-story-or-die reporters like Hank Philippi Ryan’s Jane Rylan

My mother once confronted my husband and me, put her hands on her hips, and asked, “Can’t one of you hold onto a job?”

She was joking – sort of. Both of us were journalists, and we kept getting better jobs, which required moving. A lot. Moving frequently is, I have discovered, a good way to avoid having to clean out the closets, the garage, and the cabinets under the kitchen sink.

Through it all, I have been one thing above all else, a writer.

I started my first novel when I was in the third grade, the story of people living at the center of the earth. I liked the concept, but I really didn’t have a good plot point, and when I discovered what it’s really like at the center of the earth, the project sort of went up in flames, so to speak.

My first complete novel, a thriller called “Maximum Impact,” was published by Forge, an imprint of St. Martin’s Press, in 1993. My second, “Handyman,” came two years later. Both received great reviews from critics, and both will be available in Kindle editions in early 2015.

The new one, also a thriller, is called “The Someday File.” It is the first in what will be a series set in Chicago, a city I have loved since I was in college and which I have called home for years. I set it here because Chicago is such a great character in its own right. The stories I can build on these bones – quite literally in the case of “The Someday File” – have infinite possibilities.

One kick butt lady!

A veteran investigative reporter and a lot of bad guys she can't write about. Sometimes she can't even talk about 'em. Well..., more or less. Then along come the Sources. Add all of them to her own boss and the paper's attorney, and a very determined newshound gets stifled, stymied, and stopped in her tracks. Almost... Where there's a will, there's more than likely another life in danger:her own. The life-saving stunt she pulls in book three of this engaging series is spectacular. But her death-defiance is an ever-ready toolbox full of skills that can't seem to get dusty. There are several book sets starring Deuce Mora as their hard-driving Pulitzer winning trustee of the Windy City's right and need to know and she can find her way around more obstacles than a capuchin monkey. Unless you're an Irish setter named Murphy or a pair of stray cats named Cleo and Claudius... Lots of action and adventure, lots of mouth-watering menus, too many villains, and lots of heart-breaking plots and plot twists. Very enjoyable reading. Would make a good TV series...

Strong Willed Female Reporter Captures Serial Killer

How can you not like a female who breaks a few rules every now and then even it’s the FBI an NSA who are telling her not to do something. She always gets the job done be it a few broken bones or cuts and bruises. She has to learn not to trust her first impressions on attracting strays and homeless sometimes they aren’t what she expected them to be. Overall the three book series was really good. I felt like she overstepped her boundaries more than normal a few times when her life was on the line but overall for this being the first time reading this author I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I could actually put myself on some of the streets and in some of the buildings after her descriptions. I will read more. Five Stars!

Great Three Book Series

This is a very creative 3 book series set in Chicago. A female journalists takes on tough, and often disturbing, cases that lead the reader though Chicago neighborhoods that are described to a tee. The local restaurants are real places (I kept looking them up for suggestions on my next trip to Chi-Town).

All three books are real page-turners and often unexpected twist would catch me off guard. Ms. Heller uses a nice vocabulary (well above that of a middle school reader) that gives the impression that is for adults. The content certainly is as issues of human trafficking, treatment of immigrants, issues within DCSF, and arson are dealt with extreme honesty and historic accuracy.

I look forward to more challenging reads from this author.

Nitty-Gritty Suspense

If you are looking for a light, suspenseful read, this box set is not for you. But if you’re looking for down and dirty, nitty-gritty suspense books, here they are. With themes that could be taken from today’s headlines, each of these three books will take you through so many twists and turns, you’ll never know what to expect until the unexpected happens. Written by a journalist, and featuring a journalist as the heroine, the investigative details are as realistic as reading articles in today’s newspapers. Caveat: If you are disturbed by human trafficking and child exploitation, prepare to be disturbed. But maybe that disturbed feeling will serve as your call to action.

Deuce Mora Mystery series Box set (Book 1+2+3) by Jean Heller.
When I picked up this box set with the first 3 books in this series, I was not sure what to expect. This is a new to me author. From the first chapter, the stories drew me in and kept me engaged. The story line for each of the 3 books could have been ripped from the headlines and is tightly woven with layers of intrigue. The frustration, anger, dread, fear and all other emotions experienced by the lead character Deuce Mora, an investigative journalist, leap off the pages as the story progresses. I am very pleased that Book 4 is available now. Look forward to reading more books in this series. These are not cozy mysteries, more gritty crime thrillers. A great read. 5 stars.

Great series

Very serious topics in the stories and scary as hell. Deuce was extremely lucky to survive each time she came close to dying. Not an unreasonable person, she also questioned whether she should continue to pursue the stories but her strong moral compass would not let her walk away. Especially given the high stakes and current body counts. I can honestly say I liked her. At no time did I think I would do things differently. In the second story, I did worry that she jumped too quickly into situations but she was also able to rein herself in and listened to sound advice.

All in all, intriguing stories with a steady pace.

First two books were really good. #3 not so much.

When I started this series, I felt that Deuce Mora could be V I Warshawski's young cousin. She is very much like the private eye in Sara Paretsky's long-running and, in my opinion, excellent series set in Chicago. The two women are strong and seemingly fearless.

The first books moved at breakneck speed (my favorite pace of storytelling) but I found book 3 to be top heavy in details and circumstances. I could have been happy with far fewer deaths and investigations.

I like Deuce. Many writers portray their characters rather flatly. I find Deuce is a well rounder character with a good story, with a strong tale. I seem to bond with her. When she is worried, I seen tense. When she cries I find myself crying with her. When she bonds with someone I find that I also like them. I lose a lot sleep when I read one of her stories. A investigative reporter who has to keep going against all her objectors and especially her editor. She becomes involved in international intrigue.

red hot thriller

These are the real deal. The author was obviously a prominent journalist and knows what she rights about. At the end of her books she says what is and isnt real - this is fiction but it feels way too real. Meanwhile you will learn lots of Chicago history. I really like this protagonist and am glad to have several more books to read. They are difficult to find - i am recommending them to various friends and libraries don’t seem to carry this author. We need to change that.

Best Heller Book Yet?

This book is a doozy of a thriller. Fire is erupting in Chicago and despite the FBI and police and fire departments no one has a clue who is behind the deeds. Enter Deuce and her Fire Inspector boyfriend to figure it out. The race is on to find the perpetrator and stop him before more lives are lost including theirs. I could not put the Kindle down till the mystery was solved.

Very good trilogy

I enjoyed this series of books more than I thought I would. I hadn’t heard of the author before but decided to take a chance. Glad I did. Each book is a complete story but I would recommend reading them in order. There was good characters that were developed nicely. Lots of action. I liked Deuce more and more as I got to know her. It’s nice to see a reporter with a conscience. The series is recommended.

A page Turner to quote so many who give reviews

I would recommend to any who like/hate mysteries, I fell in love with Duece character and her mishaps while following a story. I have never been to Chicago but if these books are accurate there are now places that were mentioned that I would like to visit should I get a chance to go. Thank you Jean Heller for introducing me to Duece.

Investigative reporter

Deuce is columnist for the Chicago Journal and is always on the hunt for a good story to write about. She stumbles upon stories about an arsonist, organized crime and murdered children. The stories are reminiscent of what is in the news today. She follows the stories until she gets the full story and butts heads with the NSA, FBI and CIA. Great plotlines and having a hardheaded female lead.

Excellent Trilogy

The Deuce Moro series is well worthy of a five-star rating. The characters are well deconstructed start and the story line is written to hold your interest throughout the three novels. Thank you Mean for several hours of reading enjoyment. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series.

Excellent reads!

I really enjoyed the characters, particularly Deuce and Mark, and the research, very well written. I really suck at reviews and only write them when I feel strongly, one way or another. I am an avid reader, 3-4 novels per week, and if you like the synopsis, you should like these books!

Three great crime plots. Journalist Deuce Mora is instrumental in solving all but not without much serious danger to herself. Could have used better editing. Many errors caused snags in the narrative having to backtrack and put the words in the right order, delete them or add where missing, but worth a read in any case.

I like this character, Deuce. She seems grounded and competent, intelligent, and doesn't rush into too many dangerous situations with no back-up. These 3 stories were gripping, somewhat bloody -- well, lots of deaths, but we don't have to see all the blood -- and pretty scary at times. Good writing.

Amazing Series, Amazing Heroine

I’m normally adverse to series in general, but gave this one a shot. Bullseye! Characters and back stories galore. Plots that boggle the mind. Police procedural that sucks inmost of the alphabet agencies and provides three extraordinary stories. I’m going to have to set my own rules aside and read the rest.

The excitement never ends

Most journalists have very boring lives unless they happen to be war reporters under fire. Deuce Mora seems to attract danger just by being alive which makes for wonderful excuses for murder and mayhem. This series is perfect for anyone who loves reading about unbelievable adventure.

Sometimes infuriating, but always exciting

I grew to love the Deuce Mora character as I worked my way through each book. Her stubbornness was maddening at times, but it always moved the story forward. I appreciate how Heller stayed with the same theme throughout each book, not letting herself get sidetracked with red herrings and such.

Awesome Murder Mystery Series

One of the BEST series I've read so far... You just can't put it down... Action, amateur sleuthing, murder, mystery, horror, what more could you want? Well written... keeps you on the edge of your seat... I'd recommend to adults because of the horror of some of the crimes... I LOVE these Deuce Mora Murder Mysteries!!! Well worth reading! 😄

First time reader, but not last.

This is a great series. A newspaper reporter, in Chicago, gets actively involved in her stories. I especially liked the reference, to Dwight Clark. I went to high school with him.

Three totally different stories!

All three books were fast moving and different from each other. One has a secret from an immigrant camp. Another had child abductions and the third an arsonist.

Great series

I loved reading about Chicago as well as both print journalism and fire investigations. Each of these books could stand alone, but reading them in a series gave depth to the stories and characters. Would love to see more Deuce Mora!

Excellent book.

These books are very good. Interesting from beginning to end. Good characters. Definitely not books that you figure the whole thing out immediately. Hoping for more in the series.
