Rate this book
Would you sacrifice the love of your life for the salvation of your family?

Adelaide has it all. Youth, a loving family, an unconventional personality and a serious misconception about true love that makes her betrothed, the Duke of Bradford, a very dangerous man. However, shortly after her betrothal, she discovers she is in love with her friend since childhood, Jasper Fitzwilliam.

Jasper, the handsome Viscount Gillet, tries to warn Adelaide about the Duke but his efforts are fruitless: it’s too late now to call off the engagement. The evil Duke knows a well-kept secret — the financial ruination of Adelaide's family — and threatens to destroy everyone she loves if they don't comply with his sadistic wishes.

In this quest for salvation, where the stakes are high and time is his enemy, Jasper is the only one who can save her family...by offering his own sacrifice.

Where do I begin? This book was all over the place...people who were initially good and kind became evil, self-centered or cruel; people who were supposed to be evil were redeemed only to do evil again and then be remorseful about it or were redeemed unexplainably. The good who did not become evil were idiots who didn't know their own minds.

This could have been a really great romance with the thrill of a mystery and one truly evil person, but it seems that the author could not decide who her hero was and who the villain(s) were. There are too many unexplained changes in the nature, temperament, moral fiber of some of the characters.

First we have what should have been the one true villain of this story. A lord who manipulates and blackmails others to do his bidding to acquire information on those who are in his way to gain power. There is nothing he won't resort to in order to achieve his goals, wants, desires. This is a man who blackmails our heroine's father several times and threatens to harm his daughter if he does not do his bidding, the last threat/blackmail is because he decides he wants the daughter for himself. After being warned off by the Duke (her betrothed) who is aware of all the blackmailing, we are to believe that this villainous lord suddenly has scruples and warns our heroine of the dangerous Duke to whom she is engaged.

Then there is the Duke himself, a man with a rumored, shady past and connections to the crown and considered dangerous....a sentiment he encourages. His past misdeeds are mostly hinted at and the only ones we are definitively told about (later in the book) are his indiscretions with wives of other lords that resulted in duels. Our duke seems to have repented and really have feelings for our heroine. Though he does like to play games and test her in the beginning, he comes to believe she is his redemption, his salvation. (Personally I was rooting for him...I like my hero's a little dangerous with a soft side and I'm all for redeemed rakes.)

Then there is our heroine's life long friend (we'll call him Lord Friend) who is initially attracted to one of our heroine's female friends (who returns the interest) yet they never manage to get together. Our heroine spends most of the book doing her best to unite these two as she wants her life long friend to be happy. However, Lord Friend is an idiot (in my opinion). He expresses his interest in the girl to our heroine, often, but never shows his interest to the girl herself. The excuse given is that he is very circumspect and abides by society morals, but jeez, even in during the regency period you could speak to a member of the opposite sex in a public setting once you had been introduced by a mutual acquaintance.

Even though our heroine has told her Lord Friend of the girl's feelings for him he is still afraid to speak his mind to the girl (a wimp if you ask me). And when the girl finally tells Lord Friend of her feelings for him, that she sees a future with him but if that is not his intent to let her know so she can move on...He doesn't understand what she means and lets her leave without saying a word! REALLY! Is he that dense? (Definitely not hero material.)

The wrap up of this story that brings us to it's conclusion is beyond belief. We are expected to believe:

1. That the female friend who has been nothing but a lady and kind up to this point and having given up on Lord Friend, A) commits an indiscretion with another suitor who then rejects her because his mother doesn't like her; and B) becomes spiteful and vindictive after overhearing our heroine and Lord Friend declaring their suddenly discovered feelings for one another.

2. That the Duke, after hearing (from the now spiteful female friend) of the declared feelings of his betrothed and Lord Friend, threatens to blackmail our heroine and her family to ensure they don't dissolve the engagement.

3. This dark, dangerous duke who has eyes and ears every where, the very one whom no one has ever been able to obtain evidence or proof of any of his supposed misdeeds, is then easily manipulated and duped by our heroine, her father and Lord Friend to get him to released her from the engagement. Really, the heroine's two co-conspirators...the ones who were unable to extricate themselves from the blackmail of the villainous lord and thus did his bidding? We're supposed to believe that they were capable of duping the Duke who bested the villainous blackmailing lord? No Way! Not Believing it!

This could have been a story with two romances...it wasn't. It could have been a story about a dangerous duke who was redeemed by love (or a story about two life long friends discovering their love for one another) with a villain thrown in for excitement, one who threatened the hero and heroine and her family. But no! ...It wasn't either of those. It was like the author started to tell one story then 3/4 into the book changed her mind and switched to another story entirely, using the same characters. It just didn't work for me. It's one thing to have twists and turns involving events with secondary or minor characters to keep your readers guessing, but the constant twists and turns should NOT involve your main characters natures unless there is in depth explanations for the changes (e.g., past experiences, traumas, etc.). And if you're going to keep your readers guessing, do it from the beginning...don't lead them in one direction for the first 3/4 of the book only to do a 180 degree change without rhyme or reason, especially when it comes to romances. There wasn't enough left of the book to warm you toward the new hero and make you despise the original. I really had high hopes for this book, but was ultimately disappointed.

Lady Adelaide Colborne was engaged to be married to a duke but she felt it was a duty and security. She had wonderful parents and she lived next door to her childhood friend. Jasper Fitzwilliam, Viscount Gillertt, son of the Earl of Richmond, knew that their friendship was forever. But he was infatuated with Miss Green.
This was a little twisted, so much is going on and so much happens. I loved when they went under the weeping willow. Adelaide went there when she needed to think. The story was engaging and full of blackmail, threats, and violence. Adelaide had one man who loved her and two other men who wanted her. The characters were well developed. The storyline was entertaining and kept your attention. I highly recommend this book.

I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

This is a wonderful story of intrigue, subterfuge, blackmail and a shrewd game of danger. I was blindsided by this shockingly, delicious historical romance that took a walk on the dark side. This is definately a must read. All the characters are astounding and well developed. They each have distinct personalities that lend a greater depth to the story. There are chilling twists and turns in this dark suspenseful romance between Adelaide and Jasper. If I were asked to pick a favorite antihero character it would be a tie of the two dark fiendish reprobates, the Duke of Bradford and Baron Rowntree. The antiheroine would be a so-called friend of Adelaide, Miss Leah Green. She has the most disagreeable attitude. The way she spoke to Adelaide was so disrespectful and degrading. But Adelaide tolerated her. Adelaide did not have any female companions and thought if she was around Leah, maybe a deep friendship would develop. Moving along, the story is about a woman, Lady Adelaide Colborne, who restricted by societal dogma, is forced to seek a marriage for security for herself and her family. After a few seasons, no one made an offer except, Reuben Fletcher, the Duke of Bradford. Since Adelaide has a kind regard for him, she accepted. Her childhood best friend and still a confidant, Jasper Fitzwilliam, Viscount Gillett, has known her all her life and now cautions her not to marry the Duke for he is a dark devious dangerous man. Adelaide would hear not of it. She feels she has nothing to fear from Reuben. He has been nothing but a perfectly kind gentleman. She could forgive his past and look forward to the future even if it means that Reuben could possibly have discreet affairs, then she could endure it. She explains to Jasper that she must marry for security for herself and her family and the Duke can provide it. She further explains that both of her parents approve and he should also accept her decision and be happy for her. The Duke does not like Jasper and resents his closeness to Adelaide. On a side note, Adelaide's father Ephraim Colborne, the Earl of Leeds, is near bankruptcy due to ill made ventures. He seeks out a shady, dubious man, Gordon Wealdstone, Baron Rowntree for a loan so he can pay the Duke Adelaide's dowry and offset his losses so his family is safe and secure. Rowntree had put conditions on the loan that the Earl must pay. The Earl is to steal information from Parliament. Ephraim enlists Jasper to help him. Jasper looks at the Earl as family and will do what he can to help. Then all the scary events unfold. A great read and I highly recommend this book. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was just dreck! There isn't a likeable character in the book and with one exception they aren't meant to be antiheroes.

The book concentrates on Lady Amelia the daughter of a Earl who is astonishing beautiful and well dowered yet no one wants to marry her except a psychotic Duke. She's friends with a pushy gal from Trade named Leah. Leah wants to marry the Earl next door's son - Jasper - who is best friend's with Amelia. Leah is jealous of Amelia. Jasper seems to be emotionally retarded - he makes Darcy look like a brilliant conversationalist.

Add to this that Amelia's Duke is a creepy stalker, Amelia's father has lost her dowry and Amelia feels she has to save her family from loss of the Earldom when her father dies. [Okay I'm not financial genius but since marrying off Amelia means parting with a shitload of cash isn't she going about this backwards?? Wouldn't it make more sense for her to stay single and use that cash to support her and her mother.?]

There's just so much bizarreness. Amelia is 21 and on the shelf (Do the only child daughters of earls with huge dowries ever really go on the shelf?). Her mother is 40. The Duke is 35 yet his mother is 'elderly' - really? Since he is her oldest male child or at least oldest male surviving child how old could she really be? 55? 60?

In one scene an Earl and the son of an Earl plot to sneak into Parliament. Since one would be a member of the house of Lords I don't see why they would be sneaking. They would walk in. Oddly the author seems to have forgotten she wrote that because when it comes time to do it that is exactly what they do.

And an entire subplot of the book is a regency manner fail. All these unengaged people are writing one another. Constantly!! Amelia even tells Jasper to write to Leah. Then there are the stupid letters, I normally love epistolary novels but these were long and pointless and I just skimmed over them.

Everyone in the book except for the actual bad guy is unnecessarily stupid.
I am dumber for reading this.

I would give it 3.5 but yeah I'm generous so 4 stars it is. It's interesting story and I'm glad the heroine is cunning and brave even though I dislike some parts.

**Spoiler alert**

I am a bit frustrated that Adelaide, the heroine would deceive her best friend. Like this story is all over the place. She should not lie to Jasper that Ms Green cruelly rejected him and insulted her too. Myb at this time, she felt something for him but didn't realise it yet. It just distasteful that Adelaide would put up his hope while in fact, he already detected there was something wrong with Ms Green. It just so complicated bcs she wrote that letters of herself and Jasper thought that was Ms Green.

Jasper is such a good friend even though a bit slow in romance dept. Like sure, he might has some fancy toward msgreen but it's not that serious. Ugh..

And we didn't even touch about the crazy Reuben, Duke of Bradford yet. I thought this story would be around both of her and him instead but in the sense of Dark Romance.

But at last it worked for the better. I'm glad Adelaide confessed the truth to Jasper and all that happened after that turned her into cunning woman. Kind of glad to see the downfall of Reuben. Serves him right, like someone said in the book, his arrogance will be his downfall. As for leah the Ms green, I don't know why Adelaide still care for that cvnt. Like.. she was deceitful and cruel toward her and jasper. Poor man that got roped into marrying her. She deserved all humiliation when she was discovered in bed with Reuben. Plus, even the humiliation that she got kicked out by that family in Scotland.

Dangerous Games of a Broken Lady by Emma Linfield is a little different than most Regency romances. Adelaide is secretly engaged to Rueben Fletch, the Duke of Bradford. He has a bad reputation and Adelaide knows most of the gossip is probably true but she sees him as her future. Her childhood friend, Jasper, Lord Gillet, lives right next door and they are still close. When he discovers the engagement, he does everything her can to convince her to call it off before it is announced and it becomes more difficult. Ephraim, The Duke of Leeds and Adelaide's father is trying to postpone it because her has made a bad investment and lost the money for her dowry, a fact he wishes to keep from his wife and daughter. Jasper helps him make an arrangement with a less-than-reputable lord that will earn him the money he needs, unless he is caught. Jasper is courting a young woman, Miss Leah Green, who is in a bigger hurry than he is, causing no end of problems.

The plot here was a little convoluted...may things unexplained. It was, however, creative and
interesting. The characters were good. In spots it was a little wordy but easy enough to skip forward. All in all it was a decent read. I recommend it.

I received a free ARC of Dangerous Games of a BrokenLady. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.

Good to the last drop!
This exciting Regency novel takes more twists and turns than a tangled ball of yarn! Just when you think you know what is going to happen next—-or FEAR what will happen next—surprise! A real page turner!
Lady Adelaide Colborne, only child of the Earl of Leeds, has had as a playmate her entire life one Jasper Gillett, son of the Earl of Richmond. Now she is of age to look for a husband and Jasper’s name never once comes into her mind as a possibility. As a beautiful young woman, she is well sought after, so much so that she becomes the focus of intrigues by various gentlemen wishing to extort her father for HER as the price! She does not realize the danger she is in, until it is too late to break the engagement! Will her father be caught as he tries to comply with the extortioner one more time? Will she have to go through with the wedding to a man she now fears? And what of poor Miss Green, who has been used and tossed aside—will she end up scandalized and shunned by society? This intriguing novel, appropriate for all ages, will keep your interest to the end.

ONE DARKLY DELICIOUS READ!!!
Wow! Talk about friends in high places. This is one exciting, intriguing, action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, nailbiting, nerve racking, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning, thrilling tale that captivates from the start. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, ins and outs, along with a few glitches unexpected events that really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. With all the drama, mystery, danger and suspense keeps building and tension thickens throughout as the story unfolds. A fantastic storyline and a strong plot keeps your eyes on the pages and your rear frozen to your seat. One wild rollercoaster ride with a plethora of emotions to sort out. The characters a written with such realism and depth it really adds traits and believable personalities. The scenes are descriptive and detailed it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Emma did a magnificent job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Emma Linfield never disappoints when it comes to intrigue and unusual regency romance plots. There are so many people playing games and keeping secrets in this book, it is difficult to keep up. The key difference between characters is that some are secretive for themselves while some are secretive to protect the ones whom they love. What was surprising to me was that not only were some redeemable despite bad behavior, but also that all could be relied upon to keep their word. In today's climate, it is refreshing to read about characters who value their integrity and are bound by their words.

Though I enjoyed this book, it was not my favorite from this author. I found it difficult to like any of the characters at the beginning, and even when I warmed up to them I still wasn't very vested in what would happen to them. By the end, I was probably most impressed by Adelaide, who turned out to be a lot kinder and a lot smarter than I recognized at the beginning.

This story grabs you and will not let go. It is at times dark, but the goodness of the heroine Adelaide keeps it in balance. Even her only so called lady friend is not a real friend but an opportunist. Her only true friend Jasper is protective of her as is her family, and she will do anything to protect the family and friend she loves unselfishly, even marrying a dark and ruthless Duke. I could not put this riveting story down with all the plot twists and turns and I was much relieved when the final outcome resolved things that I was sure could not be fixed. The more I read Emma Linfield's stories, the more I am impressed.

What an exciting story! Very action-packed with lots of danger and intrigue. I really enjoyed reading this book. I had a feeling from the beginning that Lady Adelaide and Lord Gillet were meant for each other and would end up together. A lovely story about not only lots of romance, but of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity. I love Emma Linfield, as an author the creativity of her writing just keeps on improving with each book she writes. Her stories are nice and long, and always have that 'extended epilogue' that I love.

I gave this book 4 stars because the writing is good. However, I could not identify with any of the characters. Every character acted spoiled, mean spirited, or shallow. Jasper is the only character I could like, but he could not make up his mind. While this book did not grab me, it might grab you. This is not the author's fault, because she is a great writer, which is why I gave it 4 stars.

I was given a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Friends to lovers?

There is always the possibility that true friends find out that their friendship has transformed into love. If this is the case their life together has a solid base to happiness. I find difficult to trust that some convoluted ways used by the Adelaide and Jasper to realize their love for each other and to easily obtain the acceptance from the powerful forces against them. I guess everything is possible in a made believe story.

So many twists and turns. In the beginning it was hard to tell who was the greatest villian. So many dark and strange games!

I did think the ending was a bit of a rush to conclusion and that the villian didn't fight back quite enough, but altogether, a very enjoyable story.
