Harold Bauer: His Book

Rate this book
A welcome entry into the comparatively uncrowded field of musical autobiography is this life and professional story of an acclaimed concert pianist. Born, and with a childhood, in Victorian London, Bauer's first instrument was the violin, and his story of his early experiences in musical circles, both as audience and as performer, have a special quality of particular interest to older groups of concert followers. Then the switch to piano and a career all over the world which brings him knowledge of and friendships with the very great among composers, conductors, singers, instrumentalists, dancers, etc. There is much of this artistic and musical philosophy, of incidents and anecdotes, of his tours and his many years in public performance. Modest, revealing, this should answer a real market, for, if not glamorous in recital, it is worthwhile musical reading.
