Paru Itagaki ( 板垣巴留, Itagaki Paru) is a multi-award-winning Japanese manga artist, known mainly for her work Beastars. She is the daughter of Keisuke Itagaki.
After a shocking bit of violence in the opening pages, Legoshi makes an offhand reveal that he knows and the rest of the book dithers about what to do with that information.
The author has gotten too stingy in using Haru, Legoshi's romantic interest. As with the previous volume, she doesn't appear until the final chapter, reminding me what I like about the series just as I'm on the verge of dropping it again. On to the next . . .
Un punto álgido en la serie. Por fin se resuelve el misterio que se venía arrastrando desde el mismo principio, el de la muerte del alpaca Tem, al tiempo que la autora pone énfasis en la segregación racial que sólo se combate con unión y solidaridad.
OK OK everything is coming together people! I LOVED this volume. Wow!
Let me start by talking about the big reveal, Tem's killer. A brown bear named Riz, who I've hardly ever noticed before, is our culprit. At first, I was moderately disappointed because I don't know anything about this bear. But when we get the backstory between him and Tem, I was shook to the core, and my mind was changed. Earlier in the volume, we see the metaphorical "knife on the table" so to speak, when a carnivore accidentally rips off an herbivore's arm, simply because for a moment he forgot the strength difference between the two of them. A shocking scene that sends all carnivores and herbivores alike into a spin, all except Legosi and Riz. Turns out Riz has done the same thing before- to Tem. While brown bears usually have to take pills to keep their strength at bay, Riz found a deep calm around Tem, leading to a deep friendship. Wanting to become even closer, Riz stopped taking the pills and accidentally tore off Tem's arm. And from that, his deep adoration for Tem became mixed with hunger, and he ate him whole. Such a startling chapter with such gruesome and beautiful panels. So what do we do to Riz, now that we now? As of now, surprisingly nothing! Riz is too strong for Legosi to take on, so an unlikely hero, Pina the pretty male sheep, saves the day by offering some good old blackmail. No further action just yet. I do want to add that I love how protective Legosi is of everyone he meets. I can imagine Pina and Legosi having a fun relationship, I mean, they already do.
Going back to the earlier parts of the volume, we got to see Legosi and Louis reunite, which was amazing. Despite the obvious danger and the sudden realization that Louis is the boss of the shishigumi, Legosi’s tail is WAGGING and all he can think about is how happy he is that Louis is safe. And when they are seemingly alone for a moment, Legosi just has to go up and hug his old friend! But Louis is not the same Louis that he used to know, and I think this is best seen when they're sitting at the table eating with the Shishigumi. The carnivore rejects the black market meat and the herbivore eats it, it really is a metaphor for their entire dynamic. Legosi escapes, telling Louis, the one person who brought Tem flowers everyday at school, that Tem's killer has been found, but that they need his help, that they need his strength. We leave the volume with the information that, because of all of the chaos, the school will be going to segregated floors and clubs to protect the herbivores. This puts friendships, and the drama club, in danger. Juno visits Haru, remarking to herself that Haru is adorable, while Haru mockingly asks Juno if she has a crush on her, adding another gay ship to my never ending pile, along with Legosi and Louis, and now probably Legosi and Pina. We also can't forget the brand new information that was dropped this volume, Legosi is not a full wolf. His grandpa is a different species. But what kind, and what does this mean? Excited to keep reading! What will happen next...

Beastars remains the weirdest concept with the best execution.
Holy shit do things pop off in this volume. We start with some straight-up accidental violence and FINALLY get an answer to who killed Tem in the very first volume! I was not expecting that to be resolved at ALL in this, at least not at this point in the series, so that was an exciting approach. Pina remains one of the coolest newer characters that I am desperate to get more out of. On the topic of cool characters, we learn a lot more about Legoshi’s backstory, including what happened to his mom and why he always mentions he was raised by his grandfather. He’s still doing training with Gohin and runs into Louis, his old friend from school who is now the head of a black market dealing mafia group.
We also get some insight into Juno, the female wolf who is currently the closest to becoming the new Beastar. She is a fascinating character, conniving and smart and yet wholly a teenage girl full of jealousy and hates anyone who is giving attention to Legoshi. She especially dislikes Haru, Legoshi’s love interest, but the two hang out for a bit and she pretends to be pals with Haru while finding herself angry at how genuinely nice Haru seems to be. This series is weird as fuck and normally it would never be anything I’d pick up, but it’s so strange and odd and compelling I am literally on the waitlist for the next volume months in advance.
I really enjoyed this volume!! SO MUCH happened and was revealed plus new characters and a great mix of legoshi's story but also including other characters POVs and stories and also lots of looking at the society in this series!
It kills me a little to have to wait 2 months in between volumes, but I'm always so happy when these arrive. Beastars remains an auto-buy for me, as the quality of the story remains high. I inhale these when they first arrive, and I reread them at a more leisurely pace every couple of volumes to revisit the story.
Volume 9 is full of action. Tem's killer is unmasked. We get his perspective of what happened— wasn't that chilling?—and tensions mount as Legosi questions his ability to subdue him and get justice for the eaten alpaca. Our newly-white wolf continues his training and has a tense reunion with a certain red deer—who is still convinced Legosi has betrayed his principles—and his lion gang. This volume closes with Juno's trying to understand Haru's appeal, while wrestling with her own feelings about the soon-to-be-instated segregation of the school. We get a little teaser about Legosi's personal life in this volume, and he seems to have some pretty big feelings about them.
Important stuff happens in this volume. We're finally introduced to Tem's killer, and we get to see the events that led to it. Gohim has a bamboo whip laying around for some reason. We get some hints about Legoshi's family. It's stuff that wasn't in the anime so it was new to me and I love it.
Also, listen, I've never been much of a shipping person, but there is so much tension between Louis and Legoshi. Like, I know Legoshi and Haru are endgame, but we are over the halfway point of the series and they don't have an ounce of chemistry. What do they even talk about when they are together? they have nothing in common. Louis and Legoshi and the other hand.
It’s not often that a volume in the middle of a shonen series ends up on a favourite list of mine, but this volume was pretty much perfect to me and I loved it so much.
It’s cram packed with some exciting stuff, from the intense opening leading to the reveal of Tems killer, to Legoshi finally reuniting with Louis, to backstory on how Tems murder went down, it was all so good !!

4.5* TEM'S KILLER IS REVEALED! LOGOSHI AND LOUIS CONFRONTATION IN THE BLACK MARKET! THE SEGERATION OF HERBIVORE AND CARINVORE IS FORCED UPON THEM! HARU AND JUNO?!?! So many great moments in this volume
We find out some things about Legoshi here, though I want to know what exactly it means... And learn about Tem's murderer, plus see more of Pina, and have a big announcement happen. Juno's comment is... something, though I think that was deliberate. A good volume, with alot of plot movement, and a big world building revelation. One thing I am curious about, and have been for several volumes, is where do omnivores fit in? Many monkeys are omnivores, and there are some monkeys at least, as well as it being mentioned that hippos sometimes eat meat sooo...
A very shocking entry with a handful of surprising events which starts with a member of the Drama Club getting a grisly injury and Legoshi believes that the one responsible for it could be the campus murderer. Later, we learn a surprising thing about Legoshi’s family and he will run into Louis in a very dangerous way. The grisly incident will also cause a big change for the school that will permanently separate carnivores and omnivores. A (100%/Outstanding)
A lot has changed since Legoshi began his training with Gohin, but he showed that he's still the same old shy wolf when he met Louis in the black market. Why didn't Louis run away with Legoshi? It isn't that I am not enjoying his scenes after joining the Shishigumi, but still... Now that Legoshi has solved the mystery of Tem's murder, I wonder what his next move against the perpetrator will be!

Obviously great because Louis was in it. Obviously great because it's gayer and more bisexual than ever before. Obviously we need Louis back where he needs to be... At the heart of the plot.
