A detailed journey into the post break up world of the ex members of Japan, I found this book well written, sympathetic to the people involved, fair and always focussed on the music.
I applaud the author for not passing judgement on the behaviour of the band members towards each other, as a fan, it is hard not to be on one side or the other.
The focus is on the music, the processes of composition, collaboration and how music takes shape and gets changed during production. This can be quite technical at times, but in the author's hands, always remains accessible and offers the listener a deeper understanding and appreciation of the end product.
I particularly enjoyed the memories of fans of David Sylvian's tour, the inclusion of contemporary reviews and the musical landscape at time of release and the chapter at the end catching up with Rob Dean. I hold the author responsible for sending me down a youtube rabbit hole of Steve Jansen projects over the years (cue big shouldered suits and cool shades). Cheers!
