Necessarily short and popular, as befits its purpose as an introduction to Tolkien for the general reader, but golly, the artwork is beautiful. I’m looking forward to my copy of the much more detailed companion volume.

A marvelous book about the creation of middle earth, the creative process and Tolkien’s life, its pages are filled mainly with Tolkien’s art and memorabilia, the process of creation stablished that everything came from his love from languages and in order to bring those languages to live he gave them the middle earth.

i think this might have been connected to the rather good Tolkien exhibition the Bodleian held in 2018. each chapter comprises a single page introduction followed by a satisfying number of lovely high-quality pictures, though these could have done with a bit more accompanying information.

It's a very nice complimentary book for the Tolkien exhibit in Oxford during 2018. I would say that this books is a nice read for those that unfortunately couldn't make it to the exhibit. There is of course the other Tolkien treasures and exhibition book for those that really want an in depth look at the exhibit and sadly couldn't be there.
But I found this book to be a really nice, light, starter for the exhibit or just otherwise a brief overview of what was in the exhibit. Over all it's a nice book to have and look through.

Quando sono rientrata dalle vacanze ho deciso di affrontare uno dei libri che ho ricevuto per il compleanno e quale libro migliore di questo?

Questa piccola chicca mi è stata regalata da @gigia.reads una delle persone che ho conosciuto grazie a questa pagina.

"I Tesori" era in lista già da tempo. Sebbene alcune traduzioni siano aggiornate, qui non ce ne sono molte, quindi sono riuscita a leggerlo senza problemi. Sì, sono una di quelle persone affezionate alla vecchia traduzione, non me ne vogliate.

Non è lunghissimo, basta un pomeriggio per leggere questo libricino.
La cosa sorprendente sono le immagini, che costituiscono appunto *i tesori* di Tolkien.

Catherine McIlwane riesce a rendere bene l'idea di come il Professore amasse disegnare, di come lui stesso, con la sua vita un po' turbolenta, sia riuscito a trovare un po' di spazio per creare quelli che sono diventati la base - e dei capolavori - del fantasy mondiale.

Ci sono alcune curiosità su J. R. R. Tolkien, brevi cenni della sua vita e di come Edith Bratt sia stata la sua compagna di vita, oltre che essere sua moglie. Tolkien faceva parte di un gruppo non propriamente studentesco, diciamo un gruppo di amici, gli Inklings, di cui faceva parte anche Lewis - lo scrittore delle Cronache di Narnia. Spesso si scambiavano gli scritti ed erano molto critici tra di loro.

Tolkien è stato un grande Professore, di quelli con la P maiuscola, proprio perché per i suoi libri ha inventato un mondo a parte. Ha tutta una sua logica e sì, probabilmente la maggior parte delle sue idee sono nate studiando, ma ci sono anche delle chicche che si possono trovare disegnate su un trafiletto di un quotidiano, con due penne e molta fantasia. Le cartine che sono inserite nei suoi libri sono disegnate su fogli bianchi su cui lui stesso tracciava quadretti da 1x1 cm per avere una scala di disegno di riferimento.

Tolkien ha amato così tanto scrivere, e non solamente le opere che tutti leggono. È diventato famoso grazie a tre libri in particolare, lo sappiamo, eppure ha tutto un immaginario attorno a sé che mi lascia ogni volta a bocca aperta.

Amate i libri un po' non convenzionali su di un determinato autore?

Este libro álbum recopila lo mejor de la exposición Tolkien, Maker of Middle-earth que durante el 2018 estuvo abierta en Oxford. Es una pieza bastante introductoria a Tolkien en la que los dibujos, fotografías y mapas tienen el papel principal y los textos, que son cortos y concisos, acompañan todo este viaje por la vida y obra de Tolkien.
Con un conjunto de piezas bien seleccionadas, el libro exhibe todas las facetas de Tolkien, habla de sus primeros años y la Gran Guerra, su faceta como profesor, El hobbit, El señor de los anillos y la importancia de la cartografía en su obra.
Este corto viaje, que no es simplemente un retazo del catálogo de la expo que fue publicado a la par, es un recuerdo y un homenaje muy justo a la mente espléndida de Tolkien y a todo su bello legado. Sin duda, un libro para volver a él cada tanto y dejarse sorprender mientras se hojea.

Very nice, concise coffee table book showing off Tolkien's body of artistic work (doodles, watercolors, & illustrations for his life and legendarium). The biographical elements were really disappointing, just bare bones information to break each section into different eras of his life and works, but that's what I get for buying the shorter (read: cheaper and less heavy to carry out of the bookstore) version of a different book. The thing that bothered me the most was that the book just trails off at the end with a bunch of the final LotR maps. The best parts were the full page illustrations and explanations of details that I would have missed without McIlwaine's notes.

I went to grab the Silmarillion (god help me) but I found this on the shelf, too. It was a nice introduction to the variety of stuff Tolkien got into. It inspired me to seek out more books about Tolkien's visual arts. I have never cared for other people's visualizations of Tolkien's work because somehow none of them are sufficiently squiggly for my taste. Also most of them are too purple. Fantasy artists love purple. Plus, I think Tolkien must have known that drawing portraits of the characters could only lead to grief, so he spends his time on buildings, landscapes, maps, heraldry, and ornamentation. This shows good judgment. Good job, Tolkien!

Дж.Р.Р. Толкин был замечательным рисовальщиком. Вполне профессиональная графика в духе модерна. И "Treasures" – прекрасная книга для знакомства с ней. Это не собрание лучшего (до которого я ещё доберусь), а что-то вроде творческой биографии, с детских рисунков до поздних иллюстраций. Настоящий книжный мир должен быть проработан до мелочей. Даже если эти мелочи не упоминаются в тексте, читатель чувствует их.

No es tanto un libro para leer, sino para ver fotografías e ilustraciones inéditas de J.R.R. Tolkien junto con algo de contexto e historia sobre cuando las creó.
Mucha gente no sabe que él además de ser un gran filólogo y escritor fue también pintor, haciendo personalmente todas las ilustraciones y mapas de sus libros en sus primeras ediciones.
Como bien dice el título es un libro de tesoros para admirar.

Questo libro mostra il lato artistico, oltre che letterario, di Tolkien.
Ho avuto piacere a leggerlo e studiare le numerose illustrazioni, capendo che non si possono dividere queste illustrazioni dall'opera letteraria, che sono strettamente collegate e quindi necessario conoscerle se si vuole capire fino in fondo il lavoro letterario di Tolkien.

Compendio de ilustraciones, mapas y diferentes elementos gráficos que Tolkien hizo a la largo de su carrera para apoyar sus obras, en especial "El Silmarilion".
Muy recomendable para entender el legendarum y cosmogonía de tan extensa y profunda obra.
Como punto negativo: Repite algunas ilustraciones (para presentar capítulo y posteriormente) y la escasez de texto.

This is such a beautifully put together book filled with original illustrations from Tolkien’s books, letters he wrote and some background information on sources and keepsakes. Perfect for my Tolkien shelf! I love reading it with my son and talking about the different letters and illustrations all throughout it.

A modest crash course on Tolkien's life that anyone should be able to read in one sitting. It is full of beautiful illustrations by Tolkien and photos of his life, so I wonder if this book makes "Maker of Middle Earth" (by the same author) redundant.
Recommended as a coffee table book or as a gift for anyone you'd like to introduce to Tolkien's world.

This is a must for anyone interested in Tolkien. It is really a treasures collection to learn more about Middle Earth, Hobbits, dwarves and JRR Tolkien himself. McIwaine shows a great knowledge with the selection and the companion notes.

Beautiful illustrations in full-color accompanied by short text chapters about Tolkien's life and work. The author is the archivist at the Bodleian Libraries, The University of Oxford. In 2018, I saw the Tolkien exhibit there which was simply stunning.

A beautifully produced little book, with insight into the man and his art. The last sections on his maps of Middle Earth is a bit dry, but I’ve never immersed myself fully in the lore of that land.

A very nice, concise introduction to Tolkien for those who need it, this was a very fun read. The art shown throughout is phenomenal, and I really enjoyed looking through at each and every piece.
