Hold up, now wait a damn minute...

description

So you're telling me that your running away from an abusive relationship---but you go to a remote area with no cell service...in the middle of the woods...with no neighbors around you at all?

You have a gun for protection, but don't keep it with you at all times? Also, you don't mention to anyone in that small town that said abusive ex might come looking for you, and to not mention where you live?

description

Also, Also- you meet the mystery "king of the forest" and tell him that you jumped into your previous relationship too quick, and got married after only three months... to only then realize what kind of man he was later on---then turn around and with a pushy fae who doesn't respect boundaries, after only knowing him more than a week?

Just...what?

Sometimes you just need a good "mysterious entity in the woods wants the lady who's entered his domain" type of story, right? Maybe it's just me. Regardless, Sophie and Cruce's story hit the spot.

She's putting herself back together after a brutal attack that left her mentally scarred and physically damaged. He's more than half wild and he's nearly forgotten the man he once was. Things could have gone MUCH differently, but, well, Cruce reined in his darker side and Sophie decided to trust her gut and give him a chance.

Which turns out to work nicely for them because it allows them both to be in the right place at the right time when things get dicey.

Like I said, sometimes you're in the mood for a dark, decidedly non-human creature who finds the person he needs to balance him in an unlikely time and place. *thumbs up*

The story is weird. But I like weird, so it worked for me.
Cruce extended a tendril of shadow and trailed it along her outer thigh, moving it steadily higher.
A battered woman flees to a isolated cabin in the woods to escape her abusive husband. While living in the cabin, she feels at times that she's being watched. And she is.
"You are mine, Josephine Davis," Cruce whispered into her ear.
Cruce has fur, claw-tipped fingers, and a deep baritone voice. He also is 99% shadow the entire year, except for one day. Then his real form appears.
His long, many pointed antlers swept up and backward from a pale, shimmering hair that hung around his broad shoulders. His eyes gleamed silver with reflected light, set in a face that was at once elfin, masculine, and bestial.
This story felt like a draft of a much longer, darkly romantic fairytale that was waiting to be written. It wasn't perfect, and felt a bit clunky at times, but was still an enjoyable read.

"I can be your god," he purred, "and lavish you with pleasures beyond your wildest dreams."

Bullet points because I am annoyed at the concepts that did not seem to be properly thought-out like:

- if you are running from an abusive relationship this is NOT how to do it
- it would have been a better story if she just wanted to escape into the wilderness and met the Forest Lord that way
- hiding in the woods and just having a gun is NOT how you protect yourself in literally any situation
- Kate should have known better
- Sophie literally traded out a human dominator for a non-human one
- I would have tolerated this more except for that almost-rape scene at the end

Basically, I expected better and the "sexy" dark faerie elements didn't erase the negative and rather problematic aspects of the story.

Reread before starting book 2. You don't need to read it first; they are totally separate with different characters.

***Original Review***
Quick read that’s been on my kindle a while. Sophie is fleeing her abusive ex hubs (recently released from prison) when she moves into a secluded cabin in the middle of a forest. Cruce is the Lord of the Forest who was cursed by a Fae queen.

There’s not a ton to this one, it’s an insta-attraction slow burn-ish romance. They have some shadow sex, but nothing physical until the end of the book. I kept getting distracted on how he’d be between her legs with antlers. 🙄 (I annoy myself) It almost has a Beauty and the Beast retelling vibe to it.

I tried Ensnared, probably the most well known and beloved book by Tiffany Roberts, but it just didn’t work for me. I thought I’d give His Darkest Craving a try - it’s short and has no spiders, yay! And I wound up really enjoying this monster, semi-stalker, romance novella.

Sophie has purchased a little hunting cabins deep in the woods to get away from her old life. She’s happy to be isolated and “starting over” - but has a feeling she’s being watched. At first she fears it’s her estranged husband, but it’s really Cruce: a cursed king of the forrest relegated to a shadow form.

This book was weird, but enjoyable. There was just enough plot that it didn’t feel overwhelming. Curses, moving on from past abuse, learning to trust again, fae magic. My one “complaint” is I wish we got just a tad more info about the curse.

Major trigger warnings for past domestic violence - the heroine Sophie was in an abusive marriage she’s still trying to escape. She was isolated and verbally/physically abused until she was hospitalized and her husband was jailed. She has severe PTSD and we learn she was raped by him. This comes up in the book as she feels he is coming after her now that he’s out of jail.

The vibes and the characters and the steam and the writing were all really good. I really really liked it, only thing is that I wasn't dying to read it and felt comfortable spreading it out over several days instead of binging it all at once, and it's on the shorter side.

It's marked as the first book in a series so I wonder who the next book will be about. Excited to try more books by the authors though.

She flees an abusive relationship by moving into an isolated cabin without any preparation and gets molested by the hero on her first night there. I like neither character right now, though for vastly different reasons.

“Who knew what dangers lurked outside in the…shadows.

Super recommended! 5 ⭐

This is the third book I read from this awesome pair of writers and I loved it. Although I am currently reading The Kraken series I wanted something shorter, cute and steamy and this was it. Perfect for an afternoon when I want to forget about school, work and other real world obligations and just read a nice story.
The one thing I'd say is that her story with her ex husband hit a bit too close to home, but it was handled so well, it was fine.

I loved the gothic, spooky undertone this book had.
A relatively short but enjoyable read.
Initially it gave me that ghost romance vibe. Everything was mysterious and intriguing and then the story unfolded.
In the beginning I’d problems with some of hero Cruce’s behaviour but then I realised that I was comparing (and expecting) him with human when there is nothing humanly about him.
Heroine Sophie was a survivor. I loved her friend Kate too. Everybody needs a Kate in their life.
The writing was beautiful as was the difference in Cruce’s and Sophie’s dialogue.

And the epilogue was so cute.
I just wish more details were written about the Fae world, magic and realm. Felt like, they just touched the tip of an iceberg. Had so much potential.

Holiday romance.
Monster romance.
Interesting world building.
TW.
Stalker, devoted anti hero.
Survivor heroine.
Short, 🔥, safe, recommended and KU.

This book was just ok for me. Honestly I don't think it had anything to do with the actual writing, more that the story itself never really caught me. From the very beginning it was a tad weird, then it became a little weirder, and ended in supreme weirdness. There is a difference between awkward weirdness and Bad A weirdness.. I mean I consider myself to be of the Bad A weird variety.. This book had some awkward weirdness that was causing me to cringe in places. That coupled with the rushed plot line gave it no time to really smooth it over before the ending supposed HEA. The concept itself was a little jarring as the FMC Sophie escapes one completely unhealthy relationship in which every aspect of her life is being controlled to jump right into another...

Sophie, attempting to hide and escape her intensely abusive ex husband moves to a small hunting cabin in the woods. Trying to deal with her trauma, she just wants to focus on her love of writing, and heal after years of mental and physical abuse. She is terrified of basically everything, especially that her ex, who recently was released from jail, will find her with his stalker like tendencies. Amidst this, the forest gaurdian cursed into darkness except for one day of the year by a fae queen, is doing just that, stalking and watching Sophie during all hours of day and night with the first intention to kill her and feast on her life energy. During his attempt to murder her.... he realizes he lusts for her.. at which time he basically takes advantage of her while she doesn't know he exists.

All this happens, with her history of fresh abuse and her desire to never be controlled again, and is coupled with his very controlling and violent nature and that just amplified my cringes. The plot rushes on and they develop a relationship based on mutual lust and a semblance of friendship, but all the while the ex looms in the background searching for Sophie, threatening to end her new found HEA.

Yea I think that if the character hadn't already had this history with a less rushed plot line maybe the story wouldn't have made me feel a tad uncomfortable... I don't know. Maybe it just wasn't for me.

I asked for a book with Shadows in it. Like the main character could control or use them and this delivered. It just wasn’t as good as I expected. It took me way too long to read because I was a little bored and it’s a short book!!

This story follows Josephine aka Sophie and Cruse. She is running away from an abusive ex husband and he is a Wood fey like creature stuck in a dying piece of land full of trees due to a curse. They find each other and he does things to her with his shadows. That’s basically it. Other stuff happens. They persevere and end up together.

What I liked: the whole ‘shadow monster becomes very intrigued by the woman who moves into the cabin in his forest’. Some of those steamy scenes where he’s literally just shadow? 😯🥵

What I didn’t like as much: as much as I like a wounded bird FMC for the angst, I thought the FMC’s backstory was too dark/current (she’s running from an abusive ex) for such a short book. The revenge was satisfying though.

As always with a Tiffany Roberts book, I’m never satisfied with the length of the story. I could read a whole series of these books with Sophie’s and Cruce’s whole relationship. Because it’s a novel, their story is short and sweet and very rushed. Sophie, who has just gotten out of an abusive marriage, moved to the middle of a forest, gets stalked by a shadowy centaur forest spirit claiming she is his mate, and she is quick to be ok with everything. I would rather have a more detailed and slower pace story of their relationship and to see more of their future together. The climax is very obvious and quick to the point.
But all in all, I’m biased as a fan of Tiffany Roberts so I still really enjoyed this book and wish I could have more 🥵

This wasn't bad, but I know I'll never read it again. Maybe because it's a short story, but it felt like it needed to be fleshed out a lot more. While we do eventually find out the cause of Cruce's curse, I would have loved to learn more about that world in general. It seemed like it could have been a good one. I did enjoy Cruce and Sophie together though. They just seemed to work for me.

After being put into the hospital by her abusive husband, Sophie has finally escaped from him while he's in jail. She has found a small, but beautiful, cabin in the middle of nowhere and she is looking forward to getting her life back. But it's hard. Her husband has instilled so much fear into her that everything makes her thinks he has found her. Right away she feels like she's being watched, but instead of this making her afraid, somehow, it makes her feel safe. When she gets lost in the woods one night and almost attacked by a bear, she finds out who and what has been the one watching her. Something she's certain can't be real. Something that's been invading her dreams every night.

Cruce is the Lord of this forest and he has been cursed by a fae queen to an existence living as nothing but a shade. Only when the full moon occurs on October 31 can he actually regain his true physical body. He lives in a state of constant hunger where he must consume the life force of other living creatures. When humans invade his forest it's perfect, but when they're not he has to resort to killing one of his own creatures which in turn only makes him weaker. It's a vicious cycle and a life he loathes.

When Cruce first sees Sophie, he feels a different sort of hunger for her. And the more he watches her and spends time with her the more he wants to claim her as his own. But Sophie's scars are deep and she doesn't want to be owned again. Fortunately, it doesn't take her long at all to trust Cruce and come to care for him as well. While the ending was incredibly predictable, I also thought it wasn't bad. These two get a happy ending, and some bad people get what they deserve.

DNF at 8%

The hero watches the heroine unpack her bags from outside her window, like a creeper, for a solid minute and then starts spouting dark poetic about a hunger he feels just for her. This hunger is different and so intense because she is beautiful and so full of feelings.

"Were long dormant desires truly the cause of the pull he felt toward her? He hungered, yes, but this was more than mere hunger, more than lust. This was something new"

Dude, chill. You've not even spoken one word to the woman and haven't even seen her outside of her own damn house yet. what do you mean its more than lust? You have NOTHING to base your feeling about her off of except her looks.

"Hunger roared within him, but it was a different sort of hunger, deeper and more consuming than his need for stolen life energies. It was a hunger solely for her. After a few moments, she shook her head, dropped her gaze, and pulled the curtains closed. The connection was immediately severed, and the emptiness within Cruce expanded to new depths."

He looks into her eyes and as soon as she turns away he feels the keen sense of loss... bro... she didn't even SEE YOU!

I'm so over the insta attraction/fated bond/unexplained connection trope just so that authors don't have to write believable characters and their relationships. Its lazy writing, and I refuse to take part in it anymore. It just makes the resulting romance feel fake and cheap.

Standalone book by the ultimate writer duo.

Fleeing an abusive and damaging relationship, Sophie hides herself away in the woods... it’s her chance for a fresh start... it’s isolated and peaceful and a place for her to heal. Despite being alone, Sophie doesn’t feel alone... for there is a presence.. and entity in the woods.. and he is watching her.

A darker more eroticically themed book, filled with all the originality and feels that this duo bring to all their books. Packed full of suspense and atmospheric world building. This book is a must read for all those monster/fairytale romance fans out there.

This story was so bloody fantastic and a super quick read...mainly because I didn’t put it down.. I just wanted more! I wanted more of Cruce’s story. The ending left me wanting for a hint of what happens after?

“Fictional romance was always looked down upon as unrealistic, but was it truly so unrealistic for a woman to want the man she loved to give as much to her as she did to him?”

This was a fun, short fantasy romance novella! Sophie is on the run from her ex-husband after leaving an unsafe situation and has relocated to a remote cabin. There she encounters a comforting presence in the forest. Although this book is short, it is still able to convey Sophie and Cruce's story in a compelling way. Cruce's backstory was interesting and lent to the development of the story. This is a good one if you are looking for a quick dose of fantasy romance!
