Seventeen-year-old Tobi Mathews lives on an isolated farm where her ex-Marine, prepper father insisted the family move to escape the coming calamity--the final battle at the end of the world.

When her mother leaves to find a job to earn money needed to get the farm started, Dad's stress intensifies. Are his fears about Armageddon true or the result of post traumatic stress disorder?

Whatever the reason, Tobi can no longer deal with his rants about the end of the world. Led by her dream to return to high school and get a scholarship to medical school, she steals Dad's station wagon and runs away to live with her mom in Cielo de Ventana.

On the way, the wagon breaks down. A man driving a RV stops to help Tobi. He's taking supplies to a homeless shelter in the town where her mother lives. He offers Tobi a ride there. She accepts, not realizing meeting this man is no mere coincidence.
