The basic alliances in this universe keep shifting and James has a lot of fun with the plotting and backstabbing. The Cardinal Order are now again the bad guys and there are two races of aliens in play. Lucky’s little team is trying to make nice to one of them with a “payload” of goodies.
Nothing goes right in this transitional bridge of a story. Plenty of innovative weaponry and desperate situations to keep everyone on edge. But, the reader knows that, since there are more books in the series, Lucky must endure and survive.
The characters in this series are straight out crazy. But don’t worry, they’re all crazy in their own, unique way. I still find April’s foul mouth and sweet, crazed smile to be one of my favorite combos, and despite the fact that being the Emperor keeps her at a distance, she finds her own way to weigh in on the events of the story. All of our favorite marines are back and up to their asses in trouble.
The world-building isn’t as visible here, just because the basic lines of the various factions have been drawn in by now. The description of the planet Lucky’s Bastards find themselves on is very evocative; it’s easy to envision to constant rain and muck and the kelp-clogged giant river. There’s even a tiny bit that touches on the idea of multi-planet ecosystems, which I found fascinating.
Some of April’s crazy plans-within-plans feel a little forced this time. I don’t want to give away the ultimate game, but it just felt stilted. Still, it made a good excuse to see the Hate rise up within Lucky again, resulting in one hell of a fight between him and some nasty aliens. The fighting is clever and inventive, with plenty of unusual obstacles and irate bad guys to keep things entertaining. And hell, April’s crazy like a den of foxes, so it isn’t so hard to imagine that she’d make things more complicated and secretive than they need to be. Certainly this installment in the series is enjoyable enough that I’ll continue reading!
Lucky Invasion delivers another high-octane adventure featuring Sergeant Lucky Lee Savage. Stranded on an alien world and facing overwhelming odds, Lucky and his team confront new threats that challenge their survival. The narrative maintains a brisk pace, blending intense action with moments of dark humour. Joshua James continues to provide an engaging military science fiction experience that is both entertaining and accessible.
Another great Space Opera, starring Lucky, a marines marine! This novel is fast paced, full of action and death. The plot twists a little, but you won't find out until the end. Joshua sure likes to get you going, then throw a twist, just to keep you on your toes. This is a great read and I recommend it.
If you like mil sci-fi space opera galaxy wide and a different universe the. This book is for you. Of course you’ll need to read the the other 5 in this series, yes 5 if you count the prequel. There great characters with edge of your seat fighting, aliens, and a human empires too.
Simple and following the formula of the past books. It was a lot more fun when it was new - now it's a little predictable and meh. I actually didn't finish it - it became boring. For me. You might love it.
Get messed up, survive, get repaired and rebuilt. Then do it all again in another impossible mission. Just another shit day in the life of an empire marine. Great characters, with loads of action. I look forward to more from this series 😁
Well great story just finished book five have not been able to put the books down from 1 to 4 all the books have been funny and exciting. Lucky the indestructible marine.
It’s not a great series of books but it is pretty good. I am not going for n with the series because a combination that f directions are just the story just plain weird for me.
