So this absolutely slaps. I mean, how could Frankenstein in a faithful graphic novel adaptation not, especially when its a pop-up book? Check this out: Mary Shelley’s classic comes to life in this lovely book. I really enjoy Anthony William’s artwork here, which has sort of a throwback comic approach that really works for this tale. It’s almost a bit flat but in a way that brings out the old timey gothic vibe and I enjoyed it. But lets be honest, we are here for the pop-up features and they are so cool. Like I said, check this out: I like that each page also has a flap that folds open to sometimes contain multiple pages underneath and the whole book is full of additional little pop-up features or sliding panels or other flaps to open up. It’s just really fun and makes a fantastic conversation piece. But ALSO the story is done quite well. Probably not as in-depth as it would have been had this been a traditional graphic novel with much more space but for what it is it is quite well done. This makes a great gift for younger readers who want to check out Frankenstein for the first time but might not make it through the full book (Frankenstein seems to have had a revival lately?) or a great collectors piece for fans of Mary Shelley or just pop-up books in general.
I had never read The original Frankenstein so I'm not sure it what it shows is all accurate but I feel like I got enough info to infer what happened in Mary Shelly's book. Overall illustrations are great!
What's there not to love about a pop-up, graphical novel, adaptation of a classic such as Frankenstein.
Well, it only gets 3 stars as the pop-ups, albeit large, impressively put together, and striking, do rather get in the way of the story panes and also make moving the fold-out page edges difficult to manoeuver. The story is also very rushed and you have to know the original to get a true sense of what is going on.
Otherwise, a bit a fun and good for fans of the original, children, and novelty presents.
This book is pure pleasure. The pop-up are simply mind boggling. Obviously the original story has been much simplified, but it's the perfect device to launch any young child into the amazing world of classic literature. As the pop-up are quite intricate, I'm holding off sharing this with my 6 year old, but when he is ready, he is going to be blown away!
The art is lovely and, though I have only read about 3/4 of Frankenstein so far, I did know the story's end and I can see how this little graphic novel (it took me 10 minutes to read) could be extremely useful. Frankenstein can be a challenging book to get through with its language and such, but this graphic novel sums up the main points of the story very nicely, making it more available to younger audiences, as well as clearly outlining the story before diving into the text. (I have a friend who is reading Frankenstein for a class and cannot get into it- I offered her this graphic novel as a start so that she can fully understand what is happening before critically analysing the novel) Overall, not an incredibly moving graphic novel as it pretty much just acts as an introduction to the plot line.
"Frankenstein: A Classic Pop-Up Tale" I am rating this 5/5 because: It's FRANKENSTEIN, come on! It's a graphic adaptation, & It pops out with cool unfolding animation.
