Stare Down the Devil: The Saga of Buck Drake

Rate this book
Raised in his mother’s Blackfeet village, Buck Drake knew little about the white man’s world except for the example of his British father Jules, a man devoid of courage, honor, and morals. To escape a raid gone bad, Jules betrays Buck into the hands of the Fort Bridger soldiers and Buck vows to one day hunt him down. The Fort Bridger Commander gave Buck a agree to work in a covert unit in the escalating War-Between-the-States, or hang as a criminal. He chose the war, a decision that swept him into a life-altering journey through the white man’s world, and to making friends who would shape his future. The ensuing years found Buck a war hero, Army scout, drifter, and convict. He was a man trying to find his place in the rapidly changing West, ever drifting between his Blackfeet people and the bigger world around them. Then, came the day his old friends recruited him into a manhunt for a criminal gang led by the murderous Jules Drake. Here he would find the path to his future, while at the same time fulfilling his vow. Formerly titled “Spit in the Devil’s Eye”, published by Solstice Publishing. The rewritten and enhanced novel is now published by Double Diamond Books under the title “Stare Down the Devil”.

About the author

I have been a writer of adventure novels of the Old West. I have now branched out to writing contemporary crime novels with a suspense/mystery base. What I feel makes these unique is that they are set in the modern West and Alaska, as opposed to exotic world and big city settings. They involve average people and local law enforcement agencies.

My writing influence comes from my ancestral roots. Mountain men, voyageurs, pioneers, and explorers make up the branches of my family tree. My paternal grandfather was Blackfoot Indian from Montana. My maternal grandfather was a Minnesota lumberjack, both men were born in the 1800’s.

As a lifelong outdoorsman I have inherited that pioneer blood and followed in the footsteps of both my families. I have experienced life in the Alaska bush, as well as the wilderness of the Rocky and Cascade Mountains, as a working cowboy, guide, horsepacker, hunter, and trapper.
I also spent several years as a Colorado Deputy Sheriff. This experience in the law enforcement field allows me an intimate insight to the system that I weave into my new crime genre stories.
I incorporate all of my experiences into my stories to ingrain them with authenticity and draw the reader into the story by their realism and a personal knowledge of the people and lifestyle involved.

I have near to 500 fiction and non-fiction works published. Included are: 19 novels and short story collections, 70 short stories, and inclusion in 18 anthologies. I am the first 3 time winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award, in 2008 for Best Western Fiction, and again in 2013 for Best Western Humor, and 2014 for Best Western Novel. Nine of my short stories have earned Reader’s Choice Awards.

A DPF. Montana/Canada Western Action Adventure (SDTD) (TSOBD)

A DPF. Montana/Canada western action adventure titled "Stare Down the Devil, which begins with a half-breed child, white and blood (Blackfoot) being left behind by a wandering white man and a drunken Indian woman. He grows up to become a Civil War Veteran earning a Medal of Honor. He is separated from his spy outfit and becomes a Union sniper. After the war he returns to Colorado to rejoin his tribe and is hired as a scout. He is framed for murder and is released to chase an outlaw, a wandering white man named Drake. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Another great story by this author!

Great storyline and brilliant writing! Amazing story that was so much like some my grandfather repeated from stories about his grandfather from the War Between the States!

Very good read

Like how it is written. The ups and downs that hit everyone. Included civil and Native American wars. From one side.

Mr Fisher

It was nice to read a western where it was something besides a story about who gets the girl.
Thank you
