Paul was about to be executed for refusing to stop preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. These two letters were his last opportunity to train Timothy in church government. The #1 priority of a pastor is to study and teach Bible doctrine. It is also important to find other men with this spiritual gift and provide them with everything they need to be successful ministers. Timothy was reluctant to wield authority. This had to change if he was to become a strong leader in the church. Paul did not coddle him in these letters, but braced him on several occasions and then instructed him on how to select and train candidates for the ministry, conduct public worship, discipline backsliding Christians, and support those who needed assistance. Timothy would also face problems with heretics and those who attended church but were not interested in the Word of God. There were also widows who refused to work and were draining church funds. Paul does his best to improve Timothy’s problem-solving skills. The rest was up to obedience and the filling of the Spirit. This commentary includes an exegetical display of each verse for those who want to dig deeper in the biblical languages, as well as an easily accessible tool for those who want to study 1st and 2nd Timothy.
