The explanation of how the Great Depression came about, I thought was excellent.  I also liked the explanation of why Herbert Hoover seemed to be sitting on his hands (while the depression grew worse).  Hoover had risen from his modest beginnings by his own hard work and thought that that philosophy would turn the tide.  However, the Great Depression was something America had never seen before and people wanted action.  Thus, they voted Franklin D Roosevelt into the presidency.

I also liked the comparison this book made of the three economic systems vying for supremacy at that time:  fascism, communism, and capitalism.  Before this explanation, I had a fairly basic understanding of fascism.  The chapter on these three systems drew the ideologies in sharp relief.

I really enjoyed the chapters on "The Culture of the Depression," the chapter on sports during the Depression, and the "outlaw celebrities" of the Depression.  However, I thought the discussion of Franklin D Roosevelt's efforts at 'solving the Depression problem' was written with rose-colored glasses on the eyes of the author.  I also wondered why the author didn't just tell the reader who Huey Long was, and what he stood for, without naming him a 'demagogue' (p. 29).  Father Charles Coughlin was also a critic of FDR, but you allowed his words to hang him without labeling him.

Chapters in this Book:
Causes of the Great Depression 1918-1929
Herbert Hoover and the Early Years of the Depression
The Election of 1932
The 100 Days and FDR’s First Term, 1933-1937
FDR’s Second Term—Challenges and Critics
The Culture of the Depression
Sports and the Great Depression
The Outlaw Celebrity in the Great Depression
Population Shifts and the Culture of the Great Depression
International Issues and Concerns During the Depression
The Coming Storm and the End of the Depression

This is a very good summary of that period in our history. My family lived through it and was deeply affected by it. My father was a steel worker who lost his job in the late 1920's. With nine children it was tough going. We were saved when he got a job with the WPA working on Pinch of roads in eastern Pennsylvania in the late 1930's. This summary brought all of that back to life for me. Thank you.

This is a very good summary of that period in our history. I lived through it all with my family. My father lost his job in the steel mill in 1929. With nine children in the family it was tough going. We were saved when he got a job with the WPA building so-called Pinchot roads in south eastern Pennsylvania. This summary brought it all back to life for me. Kudos to the author.

I thought I knew a lot about the Great Depression from my Grandma and US History classes... WRONG! My Grandma gave some good personal stories of what it was like, but the US History class only briefly touched on this event. This book was brief and concise, but filled with a great timeline with that what happened and why it happened. Tragic AF.

Addicted to the Captivating History book series! Highly recommended. If you can't tolerate 90-150 pages of an event, time, or person I cannot help you, but you should consider reading some of these!! It is great!

This book presented a very broad strokes picture of the events surrounding the Great Depression, and the cultural attitudes and shifts that took place during the 1930s, mostly in the United States. If you're looking for a very general overview of the life and times, this is a good place to start.

Appears to be written with the skill of a C average tween. Author assumed the reader is stupid and rails on about WW2. Stick to the subject. Only read the book of its free!

Good general reading on the Great Depression.

This book gives a good general idea about what happened but it’s not an economics book by any means. Great to get a general idea but that’s it.

I am more interested in the social aspect of this era than the economic, thankfully both were discussed and I do have a better understanding of how it all came about. I'm glad I chose to read it, I nearly skipped it thinking I knew enough of the era.

Good thumbnail sketch of the Great Depression

I liked the way the author organized different aspects of this era. I learned about how cultural events like sports and the arts reflected the ethos of those living in the era.
