Written with both the layman and medical professional in mind I found the story easy to follow, yet full of fascinating detail about the process the lead to the discovery of insulin, and the biggest medical advancement in recent history. Bliss does a great job illustrating the personalities and emotions of the people involved. There was just a bit too much time spent examining the strained relationships between the main characters, in my opinion.
Recommended read if you're a Type 1 diabetic or know someone who is, and especially if you're connected to Toronto, U of T and/or Western University.
The incredibly amazing story of the men who discovered insulin. A case of science triumphing in spite of personal ego and bitter rivalry but not without unequalled persistence, tireless determination carried out under poor working conditions with little pay. The result would save countless lives, make history and earn these men the Nobel Prize. Banting, Best, Collip and MacLeod would change the world. Great read.
