Identifies characteristic plants and animals in diverse ecological communities in New England, exploring the interrelationships among flora, fauna, and geology
Highlights for me included: the relationship between geography and ecological conditions for forests - successional patterns of forests and wetlands - the use of pollen caught in peat bogs to track forest migration since the ice age - a discussion of soil composition and its effect on vegetation
An excellent introduction to the climate, geology, trees, shrubs, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds of southern New England. Well written. Not many useful illustrations, though.
