Fantastic worlds. Get-Off-My-Lawn attitude!

Tom Hansen is the writer and lover of all things fantasy. While he can’t seem to stick to a specific genre, you can rest assured that anything he writes will have that aspect of whimsy and world building that defines the fantasy genre.

His first series is the End Gate Chronicles is a modern-day urban fantasy following an older widow, who discovers her own magic late in life.

His second series, Enter the louVRe, is set inside a video game, where an evil AI has trapped players and stolen their memories. Now, our hero, a minotaur, must save the world from destruction if he is to have any hope of unraveling the AI’s plans and escape the game unscathed.

His third series, The Frost Fervor Concordance, is set in a fantastical frozen wasteland, where a young fisher comes home to find her village burned and her parents killed. The fire-headed mage must track down her kidnapped sisters and battle the tyrannical Frost Queen in order to keep her sisters safe.

Tom lives in Arizona with his dear wife, four children, and two cats.

I enjoyed reading this novel very much. Set in a medieval-era world, it follows Ynya - a young fire mage as she sets out to avenge her family.

The world was pretty straight-forward to understand. I think the author has done a good job to set up the basics. I would guess that this is targeted at perhaps a young adult audience based on the level of complexity of the world-building. (It's solid, but there's room for more if the author were to so choose. This in no way hurt the pace of the story).

Speaking of pacing, I found that the story moved along at a good clip. There wasn't much unnecessary detail, but enough was provided that I was able to fill the gaps in myself. I think this element was absolutely on point for an action-adventure fantasy, which this seems to be.

What struck me as most impressive in this novel was the character development. Ynia is 16, and she largely behaves as I would expect, given her age. She's flighty, impulsive, prone to foolishness, and is prone to succumbing to her pride and pettiness. She's also got a core of strength, a kind and generous heart, and strives to do good in the world. I find her to be very relatable and highly believable. (She reminds me a lot of Merida - from Disney's Brave - who I think is one of the more impressive characters). This initial novel does provide her with some opportunities to grow, and, I hope, future installments will continue to show her evolution. I think she's going to be a force to be reckoned with! She's believable as a character and, more significantly, as a strong female lead.

Secondary characters are also highly developed (some more than others, as would be expected). I think the author has laid the groundwork for a very good series here, and I hope that some of the less well-developed characters will become more fleshed out should they reappear later on.

The main drawback for me was in the dialogue. The use of modern expressions (e.g. you know, are you kidding?, etc) jarred me out of the world. I think it would have been more effective had the author chosen to develop slang/idiomatic expressions for this universe. Having said that, if the target audience is, in fact, young adults, then I can respect the choice to use turns of phrase that would connect.

While I didn't find this novel to be revolutionary, it's a solid entry in the fantasy genre, and was one that I really had a good time reading. I'm looking forward to continuing on with Ynia's adventures.

I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only.

Pretty good

So I liked the book and the writing. The story was very engaging. I gave it 3 starts because I would have liked a little bit more world building and information about the main villain and because the heroine was annoying for 50% of the book. She tried her best but she kept making the same impetuous mistakes. At the end things are explained and she grows and I liked her more but it was frustrating to see her keep making the same mistake so 3 stars. That being said I’ll be picking up the next in the series so clearly she can’t have been all bad.

Obviously I liked the story. What made me sigh to myself occasionally was what seemed like cliche descriptions. Things like (not exact quotes), bright as the sun, or fire in her heart. Phrases I’ve read repeatedly in books of all genres. Other than that I enjoyed it very much.
