Obsessed with the memory of her dead son, Julie Hauser, along with her husband Peter, moves to a small Massachusetts town to make a fresh start and must call upon her supernatural powers to battle the town's modern-day Jack the Ripper
This is one of the horror novels that has it all: a serial killer on the loose, a young family whose young boy was murdered and the incantation of a evil entity named Atavar after some nightmarish dreams. Will Julie and Peter survive Atavar's attack? What about the mysterious barfly Maria Renata and her urge for sex? Can occultist Stiles help Julie in destroying mighty Atavar? Is Sheriff Winoma able to solve this case of murder in his city? Here we have a very dark, uncanny and compelling book with demons, sex, serial killings and mystery. All ingredients form a fine well plotted story. Entertaining and spine tingling. Highly recommended. This stunner will keep you hanging on your seat and drive the sleep out of your eyes!
If you’re ever in the mood for a “serial killer in a small town” thriller, one that includes psychics, a Lovecraftian-style elder god/demon being summoned from the nether realm, and a raging nymphomaniac who may be the reincarnation of a nun who was also an accused witch from the 1700s, this might scratch that itch. Oh and it takes place on and around Halloween, making it a fitting read for this time of year.
Even though the main characters — a young married couple newly arrived in Holbrook Massachusetts after the recent murder of their small son — are pretty selfish and unlikable (understandable given their circumstances), I was kept entirely entertained by this utterly bonkers tale throughout. It was nearly impossible to predict where it was going, and author McCarty just kept throwing uniquely outrageous terrors into the mix.
The first half was pretty typical late 80s/early 90s schlocky splatterpunk-ish fun — demented killer on the loose featuring violent kills, a guy who experiences occasional blackouts looks suspicious, wife with latent psychic abilities has unsettling dreams and premonitions that seem to implicate her husband— but once the supernatural elements (e.g. demonic creature on the loose) really kick into high gear later on, it goes to another, over the top level. It certainly won’t blow anyone’s mind, but it’s a good, nasty time nonetheless.
It’s too bad McCarty never wrote any other novels (only nonfiction, mostly relating to horror movies), as I’d definitely be down for more of this.
Good prose, good characterization, good world building, good story, no theme. 4-stars.
A tightly bound collection of tropes is melded into a convincing story that captures the imagination. It is character driven and fast paced. It's a shame McCarty didn't continue to write horror fiction. This was his debut novel.
The book was a very interesting read. A woman, who is a "closet psychic ". After her son had been kidnapped and murdered, she and her husband had to leave Vermont and have a fresh start some place else. They moved to Massachusetts, near her sister. The place they moved to had a serial sex killer. The local Sheriff, after exhausting all his ideas of finding the killer, decided to get her help, but after refusing to help, the sheriff became suspicious that the wife might be hiding something and started focusing on the husband. The story line was developed at a reasonable pace, kept me reading until the end. Since I read it in 2023, technology and advanced such that telephones are more common today. There was one section that I wish took a different path but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book has everything I could ever want in a horror novel. Suspicious murders, occult themes, suspense, action and a kick ass ending. And the fact it takes place around Halloween really adds to the love. Definitely recommend
