This is book ten of the series. I have enjoyed this series and am always eagerly waiting for the next book to come out. The story picks up from where episode nine left off. It seems that Nathan and crew are going from one fight to the next. The Aurora is badly damaged and the members of the alliance and the Karazari are improvising on the fly to keep Lord Dusahn at bay.
The book is well written and it is very hard to put down. The action is continuous but has some humor tossed into the mix. I enjoy visiting with all my favorite characters, and it is fun to see them grow and develop from book to book. I found the new AI called Aurora most interesting. Hope the Alliance gets the upper hand in the next episode.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is eight hours and thirty-one minutes. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the book. Kafer is a voice artist and audiobook narrator. Kafer has won many Earphone Awards for his narrations.

A great installment to the series with plenty of fast-paced action. The plot lines are coming together nicely, and we are starting to see both a tipping point and an expansion point for the story. The only complaint I have for this book is a similar one I've had before... character waffling, which I'll explain in a bit. Otherwise, I can definitely give this book four stars and call it an Action Packed Read.
Now, on to the details... don't read further if you don't like spoilers. Or criticisms, because I'm about to be a bit critical.
Picking up where the last the book left off, we are dropped right in the middle of a sudden scrap on the new found ally world of... uhm... that place where they went and did the thing. Casaba? Casbon? Where they did the deal for the new-new-new fighter ships. You remember? So yeah, they fight there, then we see them fighting back at the Samurai Planet. Then, more fighting to keep from having to fight more, after which they decide they should go fight more to keep from having to fight more later and also right now.
I know, it sounds complicated, right? But remember, Nathan Scott is a super genius who always know the right thing to do, especially when people who are a lot smarter than him tell him he shouldn't. But he does it anyway, and it works, so there you go. Oh, and he also Captain Kirk's the dangerous missions too. That's because he's both indispensable to the cause because no one would keep fighting if he wasn't alive to lead it, and also because he cannot be seen as not fighting in the front lines because no one would follow him otherwise, and... yeah, that all ties right into the problem I've been having. Waffling logic explained away as a character flaw... in ALL the characters. It's getting old.
I love the books. I love the action. I love the plot twists. I love the tech and the tech advances (although I still don't understand why you have to be pointed in a certain direction to use the jump drive when it's not based on momentum). And I love the characters too, but they are all flawed in the exact same way... Ignore logic and their own previously stated convictions if it's in the name of saving a single individual or pursing a really cool idea/goal.
Sigh. Oh well, nothing is perfect. I just needed to vent that, I guess. Besides, writing is hard. I choose to give the benefit of the doubt and suspend disbelief for the sake of an enjoyable story, which this series most certainly is.

This book series has been on the back burner a while for me. I have read the first series, The Frontiers Saga and am now at book 10 of the second, sequel, series. The first series I read at the pace the books where published at. This one has, as I wrote, taken a bit longer. There’s no real reason for that. I guess I just got a bit overloaded reading so many book in the same series.
These are good books. Almost all books in both series are four or five star books. A few three stars and only one, the last one in the first series, a two star one thanks to the abysmal ending.
This is a four star one. Plenty of space action, nice characters, good advancement of the story and it’s well written. All of the books have been well written so that’s not really a surprise.
Despite being in a dire situation with the Aurora crippled, lacking resources and the rather insane leader of the Dusahn doing his best to ruin the day for Nathan and company our heroes are indeed kicking Dusahn arse.
Sure, they are solidly on the receiving end of bad things as well. This is actually something I have had a gripe with during the entire series, as well as the previous one. The Aurora has been shot to bloody pieces more times than there are flies around a cow’s arse. It’s really silly. There’s no way that ship would have any structural integrity left.
This is one of those type of books where we get a glimpse of the bad guy mastermind when he receives the bad new and realizes that he is getting a well deserved arse whooping. I do like these bits.
Overlooking the ship getting shot to pieces with annoying regularity a’la ST: Voyager, I did really like the book. I especially like the fact that, not only do the Dusahn get a well deserved spanking but the ending promises good things to come not only for the ship, Aurora, but our band of rebels might get some unexpected personnel additions in the next book.
So, as I wrote, for me this was a solid four star one.

With "Retaliation," the 10th episode in the Frontiers Saga, Part 2: The Rogue Castes, Nathan Scott and his band of rebels get the opportunity to strike back at the Dusahn, the empire-hungry invaders who have derailed the Alliance. Scott's ship, the Aurora, continues to struggle. It's nearly dead in space after an attack by the Dusahn. Despite the win, the Karuzari remains the underdog, still swinging but weak and vulnerable. But Scott has some pretty tough fighters. They don't back down and they find ways of harassing the stronger force coming after them. Scott uses subterfuge and he knows how to get people to trust him. He's straightforward but deadly. And he's become more of a pirate than freedom fighter. He figures out a way to save the Aurora, but it's a little crazy and requires going in and attacking a planetary system controlled by the enemy. Author Ryk Brown obviously loves his characters, but he has no problem putting them in danger and even kills them off. There are many difficult experiences in this novel and some are hard to read. Brown ramps up the tension. And his build up to the main conflict is as good as any he's written. Scott and the rest encounter one problem after another but figure out a plan B, or C, or D. Brown keeps his fans, like me, ready for the next installment.

If you are looking for details of the story read the other reviews. I have found this book wholly engaging as well as the entire series. I am amazed that Brown has kept up quality while not slowing down the pace of his production. His characters are not wooden chess pieces. They are complex multi=demensional people which strengths and flaws. The enemy aliens have a separate voice with reasonable motives from their perspective. Nor are they bumbling fools that lose every battle.Neither side holds an overwhelming advantage in technology or tactics. These balances make for great individual stories and the series whose quality is greater than its individual pieces.

Somehow I made the mistake of reading this book before I read books 8 and 9. So my understanding of some things is a little off. But this is another good installment with some actions parts and also some filler. Now I need to go back and read books 8 and 9 to catch up.

Good action space drama
The saga continues and the threads are well woven. The space battles with jump drives are perhaps the best written I have ever read. Ok. I’m addicted to this series.

Another great addition to the saga. I will say not a lot happened as far as the story is concerned. You get a quick battle in the beginning, and not much until the end. As always the characters are great and I can not wait to see what happens next. I have included below a synopsis of the story so that I can remember what happens for the next book.
****SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE BOOK****
The Dusahn attack the Rogan system while the Aurora recovers from heavy damages while the Aska attack their new allies. The attack is fought off and they begin planning their recovery.
A group of Dusahn ships fled the battle. Nathan decides to send jump missiles and a group of fighters to attack the ships. One ship, the Amonday, jumps back to Rogan to attack the Aurora as the other ships are destroyed. The Amonday is left defenseless as help finally arrives and the ship is boarded and taken over as the remaining crew are captured.
The acting captain of the Amonday, Commander Andreola, is brought to the Aurora when he is questioned by Nathan Scott. He tells them that the Dusahn took over his homeworld called Orswella, and that they have a shipyard surrounding an asteroid. Only one Dusahn ship protects the world.
Meanwhile they go on the offensive with teams of Cobra gunships and Gunyoki fighters conducting surprise attacks on Dusahn ships. The Dusahn send more ships to finish off the Aurora.
The Aska continue their attack on the bases on Casbon in a surprise attack. The Karuzari forces defend against the surprise attack using Super Eagles and their new AI assisted Nighthawk fighters.
Commander Prechitt takes a group of Nighthawks to meet with Nathan to inform him of the attacks on Casbon and request help to attack them head on. Nathan is introduced to the AI technology in the Nightwing. Also, during an attack, a Cobra gunship in damaged and drifting in space as the others rally and search for them.
Jessica takes a squad to the Amonday to get intel. When they access the computer systems it sets off a booby trap which explodes the ship. Jess, Ghatazhk soldiers, and Commander Andreola escape in a pod but jump an unknown distance away and are lost. Robert sets out to find the lost Cobra crew and finds them drifting with little air left.
Josh and Loki are able to find Jessica and the others in their escape pod. Meanwhile crews locate the damaged Cobra crew and are trying to feed them oxygen and save them. Nathan sends additional ships with Vlad to attempt to save the crew. Vlad is able to connect an emergency power and air, but it looks like enemy ships are nearby closing in on them. Also, Nathan is preparing to steal ZPEDs to give power to the Aurora who is stuck without a new power source.
A team of ships attempt to rescue the damaged Cobra Gunship and the Dusahn finally arrive attempt to thwart their rescue mission. Right before the mission is about to be aborted, Gunyoki and other fighters arrive at the last minute to distract the Dusahn and complete the rescue.
A small attack group attack Ahka head on and destroy industrial targets and deliver a message to leave Casbon alone. Orochi boat ships have successfully been transformed into jump missile platforms and Josh and Loki begin testing them. Crews come to learn the new ships and are told that they are going to attack Takara in 3 days, which is likely going to be a distraction so that Nathan can steal ZPEDs for the Aurora. Nathan, Jessica, and Marcus go to Haven to get a Dusahn ship for their mission.
As they wait on their ship they return to the Aurora and make the final plans for their attack on the ZPED factory. Vlad tests out plugging the AI from the new Nighthawks into the Aurora after being amazed by the technology and is excited by the results. Siggy arrives at the Aurora with a Dusahn ship and uniforms as they leave for their mission.
Jessica and the Ghatazhak do a space jump and cold coast next to Nathan in the Dusahn ship through the asteroid's shields into the facility. The Orochis launch jump missiles towards Takara to start the distraction. Jessica lands and takes out the shields as Nathan makes his way into the facility.
Nathan makes his way through the facility and Telles manages to get the ZPEDs. The attack on Takar continues but Lord Dusahn figures out their ploy and sends their ships to defend the base. Nathan orders them to take off with the ZPEDs, but as he is pinned down Jessica comes back to save him. The crew is able to escape and jump away just in time as they launch jump missiles to destroy the station.
Vlad and Deliza finish integrating the AI into the ship which they now name “Aurora.” Nathan thanks Jessica for saving him. Lord Mahtize is visited by a mysterious elderly man on Takar. It is revealed that it is retired General Hesson, who was just fired by Lord Dusahn for the attack that just occurred. He wishes for Mahtize to deliver a message to Nathan...

Another great book in the series.
This is another excellent book in the series, well paste good character development and quite a few suspenseful scenes. I have often thought there was not enough science fiction in this series, but with the development of a new artificial intelligence unit there is some excellent potential to increase the storyline. There is good interaction between the characters excellent banter and humor. The only thing I do not like is, that the good guys are behind the eight ball. That they’re fighting from a disadvantage, this story aspect of the good guys fighting from behind with minimal equipment minimal capabilities is used a lot in books these days. I am invested in the story and if you start reading this series you will be as well waiting for the next book.

Aurora in a dire situation makes up use of u usual options.
The Aurora has been badly damaged by an Dushan ambush.
One of the ships is hit as they jump away from a battle and the rear end of his ship is damaged as the failing jump emitters chop off pieces of the ship through a series of little jumps. Not knowing where they are the crew have to prepare for an unknown period of time lost in space.
One incident after another hits Nathan as his day progresses ending in a massive mission that could see the demise of Nathan and many other people.
Another great book, I can't wait for the next book.

Still as entertaining as the first
10 books in and to be honest, no sight of the quality dropping
The story continues to progress nicely, no need to drag in a new villain or enemy, just a continuation of the existing storyline
The characters continue to still being developed, learning more about Nathan and his thoughts, Jess and her development and Cameron as the restraint the rest so desperately need. Vlad is quite prominent in this novel and it benefits from it, maybe something that is used in future books
Overall a good solid story, that draws you on and leaves you wanting more

Great action but getting hard to keep up
It has been awhile since I read the last book in this series. When I started reading this I couldn't remember the setting and people and got frustrated. The main characters are easily remembered, but there are so many characters and subplots now, that it is hard to remember everything in the months between each new title. Perhaps it would help to have a brief summary of what came before at the start. Otherwise another good book and I'm glad Jessica refrained from killing rampantly.

No evidence of Nathan’s improved intelligence
When feigning an attack, it has to be so convincing that your enemy believes it wholeheartedly. Worse yet, using such high power on small targets naturally arouse Lord Dusahn’s suspicion and that General Hesson, a seasoned career soldier couldn’t see it is a mystery to me. It’s otherwise a good read as usual.
When feigning an attack, it has to be so convincing that your enemy believes it wholeheartedly. Worse yet, using such high power on small targets naturally arouse Lord Dusahn’s suspicion and that General Hesson, a seasoned career soldier couldn’t see it is a mystery to me. As in previous books of this series, the action starts from the first sentences. Needed to re-read the last chapter from the previous book to remember where the author left us. A lot of different changes in events. Also the end of the book there is many questions that will need to wait for the next book.
The only complaint is about the length of the book - the book seemed to be shorter than previous ones.

still going strong
My only complaint is that I did nothing today. Started this book in the morning and finished at 7pm. Nathan is still transforming into something needed. This really should be a Netflix series. With halfway intelligent screen writers and a good cast it would be winner. Only one error, Where’s it at is incorrect it should be Where is it. Minor but I have been corrected on this too many times to let it slide🤷♂️🤷♂️

Another awesome adventure !
Loved every second of it, Ryks books are like crack... But it was a bit SHORT for my taste as have been the last couple of books ... Still, i love the books and cannot wait until the 11th book is released !!!
Also I think I'm liking where ryk is going with Nathan...

Utterly riveting book
These books keep getting better and better. Nathan, Jessica, Loki, Josh, Vladimir and all the characters we’ve grown so attached deal with a damaged Aurora and the devious Dushan. This was book was an incredibly exciting page-turner that was impossible to put down.

Serviceable also predictable
Story line dies not move a great deal, there is plenty of action (perhaps needed). Generally a good book and very much in the episode tv vein, although I would like the story to hurry up a little. Perhaps it's the wait between books that is frustrating. It is a mute point anyway as if this far in you will not stop now!

1 Of the BEST Series
The Frontier Saga series of books is in my opinion one of the very best science fiction space operas written within the last five years. The problem that I'm having is in waiting for the next book in the series. I almost felt cheated when I got to the end of episode #10. Now I've got to wait for # 11.

Good but a little slower and “thinner” than other in this series
I’m a huge fan of Ryk and this series but found this one to be more of a “same old” collection of skirmishes with the Dusahn rather than it introducing any new depth or plot complexities. Still enjoyable however and I’ll pick up the next installment as soon as it’s ready.

Great science fiction
Excellent and consistent character development with growth. Ryk Brown keeps the story line fast paced and the reader guessing. I really enjoy the philosophical discussions he sprinkles in. Can't wait for the next book and find out where the many story lines take the reader.

Another great episode
This is a book that is hard to put down while at the same time you can’t possibly sit while reading it. Ryk does a great job of developing a depth of characters hard to imagine are not real. Very worth the time to read.

Nathan Scott continues to come up with amazing ideas. The people around him make those ideas reality. This book continues the story arc and gets us ready for the next installment.

Action, action, action
From beginning to end this book is filled with action. Ryk has again written a great book and continues to bring this Saga to new heights. I will patiently await the next episode. But, don't take too long.

The action is non-stop, some loose ends tied up and some interesting new avenues opened up. Author seems to have returned to the original pace and tempo of the part 1 books.

Fast Action Packed
Very fast paced and action packed episode. I can't wait for the next one. I enjoyed the overlapping scenes describing simultaneous events... the movie playing in my mind was epic.
