With few other options, Scarlet Worthington flees from her home in England to the wild Highlands of Scotland to help her sister run a school for ladies. There, Scarlet begins to rebuild her own shattered confidence by recruiting a fierce Campbell warrior to teach her and the students how to protect themselves from villains and scoundrels. The intimidating Aiden Campbell both infuriates Scarlet and ignites a fire inside her as she works closely with him to hone her new skills.
Burned in a fierce fire, set by English soldiers, Highland warrior, Aiden Campbell, has finally healed enough to take temporary command of his clan. That's where his focus should be instead of dealing with the feisty, beautiful Sassenach who asks him to teach her students.
When Scarlet's past stalks her up into Scotland, her nightmares come alive, and Aiden's lessons are put to the test. With his own ghosts from the past making him despise English women, Aiden fights the inferno of passion that's grown between them, a different kind of wild fire that could prove just as deadly.
I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!
I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).
I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

Betrayed, sexually assaulted, and threatened by those of the highest power, Scarlet Worthington does the only thing she can do to protect herself: flee her home. With the help of her brother and sister, Scarlet has found peace, safety, and purpose in Scotland, where she and her sister are running the Highland Roses School. Scarlet is determined to never again be someone’s victim and she wants her students to be able to protect themselves as well. With her new brother-in-law away, the best candidate to teach Scarlet and her students self-defense is the oh-so-handsome (and stubbornly closed-mouthed) warrior Aiden Campbell. Scarlet and Aiden strike sparks off one another immediately, but each has a past that makes them wary of trusting the other. However, some passions are simply impossible to deny…
A Protector in the Highlands grabs your heart and doesn’t let go. Heather McCollum has delivered an emotional, satisfying romance with two incredibly strong leads who are impossible not to root for. Scarlet saved herself from a horrible attack once, but she knows she cannot rely on luck should she be threatened again. I loved her strength, spirit, intelligence, and her determination to learn how to protect herself. She’s clever in coming up with ways for her students to arm and defend themselves and by the end of the book I really wanted a pair of the hair sticks she designed. Her confidence has been badly shaken, but I really enjoyed watching her find herself again. As for Aiden, he’s a fantastic hero. He’s strong, protective, and handsome, to be sure, but what melted my heart was how he acted around Scarlet. He doesn’t even blink when Scarlet asks him to teach her and her students how to defend themselves, even when others are scandalized. He doesn’t know what happened to Scarlet in the past, but he’s always clear that he’ll never make her feel pressured or unsafe and that’s a sexy as hell hero right there. Aiden has ghosts of his own, ones that make him reluctant to trust his heart to Scarlet. But it’s clear that these two are made for each other and I just loved watching them fall madly, passionately in love.
Politics, intrigue, and danger are woven into the story, though to say exactly how would spoil the tale. I liked how these elements rounded out the story, slowly adding intensity until the action-packed climax. All in all, A Protector in the Highlands is a truly satisfying historical romance. Scarlet and Aiden make this story shine and their romance was wonderful to watch unfold. I cannot wait to see what comes next for the brave Highland Roses!
Note: This book has been renamed The Savage Highlander and the series has been renamed The Campbells.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I received this book through Netgalley. I really liked this story set in old Scotland where a budding romance between a Highlander and an English lady comes to life. Scarlet has had some bad experiences in her past, and Aidan is trying to help her work through them. Nice romance novel with some spice.
He was a very worthy hero and I loved the heroine too. They were a perfect match. There are traitors aplenty and in the middle of winter The King and Queen of England come to visit. for Christmas no less but traitors are hiding in plain sight. Evil has come to the castle but the Highland Roses are ready to defend their land and kind of King. Lol. It was awesome cent wait to read the next one.
Scarlet Worthington, sister of Evie Worthington Campbell fled London with her sister after a traumatic event at court. Plagued with nightmares, Scarlet slowly begins to heal aided by the defense classes her sister started at her Highland Rose school and finally begins to feel safe in her new Highland home.
Aiden Campbell, Grey Campbell's commander, hates the English, he too to plagued by nightmares, but not from the fire that almost killed him, his nightmares are caused by an Englishwoman. When Grey is tasked with delivering the heads of the traitors (from the previous book) to London, he leaves Aiden in charge. He is quickly informed by Scarlet that part of his duties will be teaching the defense classes in Grey's place. Aiden scoffs at the idea, but agrees.
This starts a whirlwind adventure filled with secrets, traitors, betrayals, unexpected visitors, healing, steamy love scenes, kidnapping and the "Roses" growing (and using) thorns.
I loved Aiden and Scarlet together, they are both scarred by their pasts and unwilling to trust easily, but despite their issues, they are supportive of each other and slowly their past traumas are revealed and start to heal. With Aiden's help, Scarlet learns to control her fears and saves herself. I liked the story, but I was disappointed that the same title errors (and a whole host of new ones) from the first book carried over to this story and combined with several inconsistencies in this book kept this from being a 5 star read for me. This is the second book in the series and I would highly recommend reading the books in order to fully understand the plots against the King and the school.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher.*
I am absolutely falling in love love with Heather McCollum. She is such a talented writer. I rarely ever give 5 stars but this book definitely deserves it. The love affair was heart felt and breath taking. The unique storyline gives an exciting plot that will not allow you to put it down start to finish. Great job. Read it!!!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋💋 A thoroughly addictive read that leaves you screaming at the bad guys , in love with the brooding hero , and loving the fact that women rule in Scotland I love Heathers books and enjoy all her wonderful stories. Great read !
When her sister, Evelyn, and her new brother-in-law, Grey Campbell, must take a trip to England, Scarlet Worthington is left in charge of the lady's school she and her sister are establishing at the Campbell stronghold of Finlarig. Second in command Aiden Campbell is left as acting chief of the clan in Grey's absence. When Aiden begins helping Scarlet with self defense lessons for the girls, the two begin to get to know one another. Scarlet is trying to overcome her fears and find herself again, and doesn't quite know what to do with the heat Aiden stirs in her. Aiden, with a deep hatred of Englishwomen, does his best to ignore this spark. The sexual tension and burgeoning emotional connection between these two is inescapable and their relationship begins to develop beyond what either expected. But a surprise, unwanted visit from the king himself and enemies from Scarlet's past, jeopardizes everyone's hopes for the future.
There's so much intrigue and politics going on here and everyone has their own agenda. I was stressing just reading it and I couldn't put this one down after the halfway point or so. I loved it and I think Aiden is one of the best heroes I've read and Scarlet was a great heroine, no simpering miss here, despite her fears. I loved this one and I would highly recommend it.
This is the second book in the Highland Roses series and it was just as good as the first one. This book follows Aiden and Scarlet. We find out what scarlet was running from when she left England. And Aiden is fully recovered from his burns and in charge while the Campbell chief is away. Aiden helps Scarlet heal from what happened to her by teaching her and her students how to defend themselves. This was an exciting story with plenty of steam. It can be read as a stand-alone but I think it works better if you read the first in the series too. I’m hoping for nathanial and cats story next.

Finlarig Castle Killin, Scotland November, 1684
Scarlet Worthington was on the run when she ran away from England to be with her sister Evelyn in Scotland. This was perfect timing to help her run the Highland Roses School. Evelyn and Grey are off to England to prove his parents innocence. However To prove this: they must bring the two traitors heads - to show who the real villains are! Let us just hope this quote does not apply: “Confidence is like a dragon where, for every head cut off, two more heads grow back.” Except in this story this quote seems very true.
Aiden Campbell is finally out of confinement! Finally healed from after being badly burned from the castle fires, which nearly cost him his life. In his brother Grey’s absence, he his now to take charge as Chief, while his brother is in England proving their parents innocence. Now Aiden hates all Sassenach especially English women, which is a mystery as well. You would think he would hate the English soldiers the most, for nearly killing himself and his clan by setting fire to Finlarig castle. He does hate everything English but his hatred for English women is more intense and possibly personal?
He does not believe Scarlet Worthington will remain in cold Scotland forever, yet the more he gets to know her the more he finds her charm, wit, bravery and courage to match her exquisite beauty. He, like Scarlet also continues to be tortured by night terrors as some call nightmares. Scarlet’s nightmares continue and her reason for running to Scotland is soon discovered. Scarlet does not trust any man except for maybe her brother Nathaniel, the Viscount of Hollings Estate, in Lincolnshire. Yet as Scarlet soon discovers that she and Aiden have more in common than she thinks. She is now the sole teacher while Evelyn is away at her Highland Rose school and wants to teach the ladies to become warriors. So they will never fear men or anyone else who might prey on their feminine weakness. For this she asks Aiden for his knowledge and tutoring to teach ladies to become warriors. To do this they must wear breeches for agility, have hair picks, which are sharpened daggers, to kill or at least maim their would be attacker.
Aiden knows Scarlet is also keeping secrets, especially her conviction that she will never return to England again! Of course Aiden doesn’t believe her. As all English woman always leave cold Scotland. Unfortunately soon the past catches up to Scarlet. Yes she escapes England, but soon her worst night terror becomes a reality! Showing up at the Castle gates in Scotland uninvited. All Scarlets fears and horrific nightmares comes to life. The only man besides her brother she trusts and turns for protection is a man who hates but desires her. He is none other than Aiden Campbell! The one man she is most attracted to, yet hates her just because of the country of her birth!
Aiden has a lot on his shoulders stepping up as Chieftain, for it isn’t only his heart he needs to protect but the safety of the clan. He doesn’t know how Grey handles this responsibility everyday. In addition the relationship between and Scarlet is a bit of a tug of war. Yet soon this thing between them grows even bigger, but will it last? Aiden knows she won’t stay in Scotland. The English women never do, another reason he doesn’t want to involve his heart. The problem is his heart is already involved and soon the two star crossed lovers find outside dangers and possible clan wars and even death.Yet to catch a rose you must be weary of its thorns…
Heather McCollum pens another brilliant novel with that golden pen of hers! A book that readers definitely don’t want to miss. I always love whatever this author is currently writing. I loved every book in The Highland Isles series and I have loved each book in her new Highland Roses School series. This is the second book in the series which is absolutely mind blowing in my opinion!
I think every woman should have a hair pick on them for protection! Plus you can’t help but fall in love with the swoon worthy,English hater with burn scars, Aiden Campbell! Any fans of Heather McCollum definitely do not want to miss this masterpiece.
This book is probably my favorite at the moment. A definite shelf keeper that readers will want to revisit and read again. A fast moving riveting, romantic, action filled, suspenseful, adventure, that I absolutely loved. It has so many twists, turns, including ups and downs, that readers will be holding to the edge of their seats! I was holding my breath with bated breath, not knowing what could possibly happen next!
There is more that one villain and more than one plot. I love the idea of independent women in seventeenth century Scotland. It was absolutely brilliant and awe-inspiring that will make you laugh and cry and cheer this special heroine on!
I can’t recommend it enough! I absolutely and unequivocally loved A Protector in The Highlands by Heather McCollum.

A Protector in the Highlands (Highland Roses School) By Heather McCollum
Scarlet Worthington has fled from her home in England to the wilds of Scotland to help her sister run a school for ladies. Scarlet then begins to rebuild her own shattered confidence by recruiting a very fierce Campbell warrior to teach her students to protect themselves as she once could not. Aiden Campbell both infuriates Scarlet while aslo making her feel certain feelings she never thought to feel again as she works with him to hone her and her students new skills.
Highland Warrior Aiden Campbell was burned in a fierce fire set by English soldiers and has finally healed enough to take temporary command of his clan. That's where his focus should be, but it's not as he's trying to learn to deal with the fiesty, beautiful English Lady who asks him to teach her students.
Then when Scarlets past shows up in Scotland, her nightmares come alive, and everything Aiden has taught her is put to the test. Aiden has his own ghosts from the past that make him dispise English ladies, but this English woman shocks him at every turn and he has to fight the passion that has grown between them which is a different kind of wild fire that could prove just as deadly. Will they be able to keep fighting their passion or will they both succumb to it without getting burned?
Heather McCollum is absolutely fabulous. The way she wrote this book totally blew me away. I could never guess what was going to come next and it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. Aiden and Scarlet are absolutely the most perfect couple and I really enjoyed getting to know them and watch them grow with eachother. It was so good that I felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book. Ms. McCollum is such a talented lady and I can't wait to read the next book from her.
A Protector in the Highlands by Heather McCollum Highland Roses School #2
Scarlet has been left in charge of The Highland Roses School in the Highlands of Scotland while her sister Evelyn heads to England with her new husband. Aidan Campbell has been put in charge of security and he is rightly worried about the English coming in to create upheaval again after all that happened in book one of this series. We learned that Scarlet is leery of men, with good reason as it turns out, but in spite of this leeriness she finds herself drawn to Aidan.
This book continues with the idea that a plot is in play to assassinate the King of England and as the story progresses we learn who the villains are, hear what happened to make Scarlet run to Scotland and what court life is like for those at the top of the royal hierarchy as well as those on the periphery.
A woman is often considered a possession to be used and abused by husbands and those of higher station as well as by fathers and brothers thinking to use them as collateral. A woman is weaker than a man so has little recourse. That said…the women in The Highland Roses School are taught more than how to serve tea and how to read and write – they are taught to defend themselves and work together to thwart the villains before the end of the book.
Fun romance that at times seemed a bit unbelievable BUT my daughter, a historian, did set me straight and told me that women did fight and did do most jobs men did and have done so through the ages even though not as much is mentioned about them as should be.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Do I want to read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Amara for the ARC – This is my honest review.
I received an ARC copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second installment of The Highland Roses School by Mrs McCollum. I have to say this series is awesome. I found this book better than the first. The heroine is very unsure of her self and her worth at the beginning of the story. The hero totally doesn't trust any Englishwoman, with good reason. The heroine doesn't trust any men. Together their spirits and fierceness draw them each other.
This book was great and I can't wait for the next!
I didn't realise when I requested this book, that it was the second book in the series. That didn't bother me too much though, as it caught you up on what had happened in the last book and this one was about different characters.
I really love how Scarlet and Aiden were made for each other. They both have scars, Scarlet's are mental and Aiden's are physical and they have to fight against them in this book.
It's not the most historically accurate book I've ever read but it was a really good read and I really enjoyed it. It was so much more than a romance novel, there were some really deep-rooted issues that the characters had to come up and fight against, and I loved the high-stakes action and the strength and determination of all of the characters to overcome it all.
But the thing I loved most about this book was Scarlet. Whenever I have read a Scottish romance before, and even when watching Outlander on TV, they try and make the female leads strong and independent but usually they just comes across as whiney and annoying, and not the feminist heroes we want to see. Scarlet, however, was a fierce kick-ass heroine that any girl could look up to. She's got a strong mind, strong morals and she knows just what she wants. And even though she does get nervous and afraid, she doesn't ever want a man fighting for her, she tackles her demons herself.
The Highland Roses are epic.
There were a lot of twists and turns to the story that kept me engrossed until the end, and the romance fit really well within the story.
A Protector in the Highlands by Heather McCollum is book Two in the Highland Roses School Series. This is the story of Scarlet Worthington and Aiden Campbell. Scarlet is the sister of Evie Worthington Campbell who we meet in the first book. I have read the previous book but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Scarlet and her sister left England because each had a specific reason. Scarlet was due to a threat that she might not be able to run from. But Scarlet is now helping her sister with The Highland Roses School in Scotland. There she meets Aiden who she informs him that he is to help with teaching her and the girls to defend themselves. Aiden has been hurt by the English people so he is weary of them and so he isn't happy to to be around Scarlet at first. Both have wounds that they are having a hard time getting past and opening up their hearts to trust and each other. But when Scarlet's past comes back for her, Aiden steps in to help protect her. Another exciting romance from Ms. McCollum.
Warning, though I try my best to avoid this, all reviews can contain spoilers of some kind. If you would like to know just my overall opinion of the book, and otherwise go into reading it blind, please scroll down to my overall and would I recommend it section.
I Voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cold snowy highlands makes for a Christmas as stunning as the ladies at the castle that was recently turned into a school. Be mindful though, no matter how beautiful, or frozen it appears, every rose has its thorns.
Wow, just wow. I recently discovered this author in the first book to this new series and the second did not leave me disappointed. Honestly, if you love historical romance you will love these books.
Our story begins with Evelyn heading out with her new husband and brother to deliver the heads of the traitors they recently killed as an offering to the king, but Evelyn’s sister Scarlet refuses to go with them to see the people she fled from at court. Instead, she decides to stay behind and take charge of the school while Evelyn is away. However, Scarlet didn’t expect the very grumpy Aiden to take temporary leadership of the clan. This highlander may be as hot as a heated brick dipped in sin, but he is also frustratingly brutish with a sore spot for anything English. As the snowy season continues to cover the wilds with an ice tipped blanket, Scarlet finds her desire for warmth goes beyond the woolly gift her sister left for her. While Aiden’s worst fears of losing his careful control becomes harder to avoid. Will the fire that burns in their bellies consume them or will the harsh wind of secrets snuff it out.
I have to say Scarlet is on my top favorite heroine list. Her past is one that would make any women quake in her shoes, yet rather than hide in the comfort she has found in distance, she takes matters into her own hands and pushes herself to learn everything she can about how to defend herself. Honestly, this woman is a true beacon of strength and an amazing inspiration. Not only does she refrain from shrinking at every shadow she walks by, but she also retains a courage that goes far beyond the strength to pick up a weapon or learn to fight. Scarlet allows her heart to seek out and explore what should scare her away, allowing herself to grasp every aspect of life rather than letting the ghosts of her past hold her back.
Our hero Aiden is Grey’s second and has recently recovered from a brutal attack on the clan by the English, but some pains go further than the ones caused by physical scars. Aiden honestly surprised me. When we first met him in book one, and even in his first appearance in this book, he has an air of a man with a grudge that far exceeds logic and reason, however this is more than not the case. Aiden has a side of him that is kind, patient, sweet, and deeply loving that just melted my heart. I loved how his inner emotions conflicted with his understandable anger and how that mixture helped to draw out not only the fire in Scarlet, but also bring a piece of her old self she thought was long lost back. I really liked how his strength and perseverance pushed Scarlet to not only face her own demons, but see the real worth in her ability to survive.
These two are amazing for each other in a way that really pulled me in. While their communication skills could use some work at the beginning of the story, these two become the perfect couple in every way that counts. They push each other and inspire each other in the way they both desperately need. I really loved how they grow together and change throughout the story.
The way Scarlet and Aiden have an undeniable love that burns off the page and grows with every sentence. I really loved how naturally and easily they came together, rather than fighting attraction, they allowed the flames to burn until they became a raging inferno.
This story is not only an amazing historical romance, but a fantastic heartwarming holiday read that is perfect for setting the spirit of the season to soar to new heights. This was a perfect mix of love, action, calibration, and hot steam on a cold winter's night. Every lover of historical romance needs to add this to their to be read list, and be ready for a romantic ride they will never forget.
Overall: This is a fantastic love story with a heroine who isn’t just strong on the outside but on the inside too and a hero who’s story, kindness, and valor will melt your heart. I really loved every aspect of this story.
Would I Recommend It: Without hesitation yes. This was a fantastic read everyone should try out.
Start A Conversation: Let me know what you thought about this book, or let me know what you’re most excited to read about in it.
Library recommendation: Recommended for public library historical romance collections.
Warning: Hereafter, you chance spoilers. I will try never to reveal major plot points, but to review any book, you must reveal some parts of the story.

Number of titles I have read by this author: 2
Love story speed: Medium burn
Relationship dynamics: The King’s Unwilling Flavour-of-the-Month on the Run (h) / The Scarred, Prejudiced Second-in-Command (H)
Sexual content: Some; sex between H and h is romantic, “onscreen” and explicit. See Triggers for other sexual content.
Triggers: Sexual assault survivor trauma (h); some PTSD (H); explicit description of sex acts between other couples and groups; non-consensual and consensual voyeurism; explicit description of battle.
Grammar/Editing: No typos noted. Grammar was fine.
Review: Like the first book in the series (see review here: https://fanscihist.wordpress.com/2018...), this book sets a medium pace. This book did not seem as well-written as the first, however. The sudden changes in perspective were somewhat hard to follow, requiring me to re-read in spots to sort out whose head I was in, and some details were repetitious; for instance, you will know without a shred of doubt that the lone male dog in the book is named Robert. These details aside, the action in this book seems plausibly set within its historical context, as cursory research revealed little information as to how Charles II spent the last few months of this life.
Scarlet and Aiden are interesting characters and I was a bit surprised at the relatively easy progression of their relationship. While Scarlet is certainly a determined individual as described previously, Aiden, even though billed as a sassenach-hater (particularly in the first book), is an incredibly reasonable man. I also found that the backstories for Scarlet and Aiden were unevenly revealed. Aiden’s backstory was meted out in a rather miserly fashion, which was somewhat frustrating. Further, Scarlet’s preoccupation with learning self-defense was a little excessive and felt overly modern for a historical romance. On a positive note, the supporting characters, particularly the antagonists, are fairly well-developed.
While I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first, I will continue to read the series.
Rocky IV version: In a cabin in the woods, the hero and heroine train for battle against the insurmountable baddie. Cue Eye of the Tiger. *TRAINING MONTAGE.*
Full disclosure: I received a free advance review copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
(Trigger warning: though no rape takes place in this book, there are several flashback scenes where sexual coercion and assault happen. I felt this was handled well as part of the plot, but your mileage may vary.)
Lady Scarlet Worthington has fled England for the safety of her sister’s home in Scotland, where she helps to run a school for young ladies. She doesn’t only teach etiquette and dancing, though – she also teaches them self-defense, having had some very bad experiences of her own. She clashes with the brooding (and quite frankly, grumpy) Aiden Campbell, who hates all English people, but particularly English women. However, there’s something about Scarlet that he just can’t resist…
This is the second book in the series, and though, like a lot of romance series, the sequels are tangentially linked and can stand alone, I felt like I would have benefited from having the backstory of the first book, as there are a lot of references to the plot of it. I enjoyed this enough that I will read the first book, but perhaps a summation of the backstory would help get over that early confusion for readers who pick this up cold. It doesn’t spoil the book not to have that context, as it all becomes fairly obvious, but it would have enriched the story for me if I had known about the prior events.
Aiden and Scarlet had some really nice banter going on, and I liked that they shared a lot of quiet moments, even though the plot has a lot more adventure than some romance novels, with plots, treason, wolves, midnight flights on horseback, secret passageways and more. I did giggle at the repeated description of how broad Aiden’s shoulders were (like, how large can he physically be??), but on the whole, thought he made a good hero. I didn’t feel like we got to know much about either of our characters outside their immediate situations, but there was so much going on that I think that kind of worked. The action never really lets up, so I found myself racing to the end just to see how it would all turn out!
I liked the way in which Scarlet became her own protector, and I was rooting for her to get her comeuppance on the man who had abused her before. As I said above, your personal opinion may differ, but I thought it was good to see her not only recover from her abuse, but also proactively seek to prevent it happening to any other girls. I liked how fierce she was. I also liked that although Aiden wanted to protect her, he understood the importance of Scarlet having her own power.
Overall, this is a good, pacey read, even if it’s not as deep and emotional a love story as it could have been. The hero and heroine have plenty of chemistry, and it’s exciting enough to keep you engrossed until the end. Four out of five stars.
Scarlet Worthington is doing her best to make a new start for her life in Scotland. Working alongside her sister, Evelyn, running a school for ladies keeps her mind and body occupied. Since Evelyn and her new husband, Grey Campbell have to leave to see the King, Scarlet and Aiden Campbell are left in charge. Aiden infuriates her like no other, but for family's and the school's sake, she will do her best to get along while Evelyn and Grey are gone.
Aiden still hasn't forgiven the English who almost burned him and his kin alive before stealing their home out from under them. Unfortunately, he has to at least accept one, Grey's sister-in-law, Scarlet. When Scarlet is put in harm's way, Aiden is furious. He tracks her down and coaxes enough out of her to learn this is not the first time Scarlet has been attacked by a man. It takes very little convincing for Aiden to agree to train Scarlet and her Highland Roses how to defend themselves against an attacker. Although Aiden tries, he cannot resist giving his heart to Scarlet. He just hopes this time things will end differently.
I recently discovered author Heather McCollum and I have to say, I'm really enjoying her HIGHLAND ROSES SCHOOL series. It currently consists of two books, A ROSE IN THE HIGHLANDS and A PROTECTOR IN THE HIGHLANDS. It centers around the Worthington and Campbell families. One family is English and the other Scottish, but they are slowly learning to put aside their differences and embrace each other.
My heart was first captured by A ROSE IN THE HIGHLANDS, Evelyn Worthington and Grey Campbell's story. I thought it couldn't get better than that, but I was proven wrong with the second addition, A PROTECTOR IN THE HIGHLANDS, which is Scarlet Worthington and Aiden Campbell's story. Both books are beautifully written, but something about Scarlet and Aiden drew me in more. Scarlet and Aiden are bruised and battered, keeping secrets that are only continuing to scar them more and more over time. It takes a while for real trust to build between them. That's when their relationship really begins to thrive and flourish. I am so glad Aiden and Scarlet were able to begin the healing of each other's past wounds. I give their story, A PROTECTOR IN THE HIGHLANDS, a 4.5 star rating. I am very much looking forward to the Worthington brother, Nathaniel's story.
Make no mistake. I normally enjoy this author’s writing style. Scarlet and Aiden’s back and forth banter and conversations are what made this story for me, my fellow Scottish romance book loving friends. It slowly but surely set the stage for them to become a caring couple. This author has proven to me she can hold my interest by establishing a genuine connection between the main couple. It also helps she uses just the right amount of Scottish brogue to make it feel verra authentic, as well.
However, this time I had some issues. The namesake of this series received too much focus and attention, IMHO. To the point I found it eye rolling at times. I grew weary of the repetitiveness in discussing why a woman needed to know self defense and the lengthy practice demonstrations. We get it, OK! We do not need to be told over, and over, and over how to knee a lad in his ballocks. It got to the point I expected Scarlet to start stopping every woman she came across and matter of factly inquire, “Have you kneed a lad in the bollocks today? No? Well, let me show you the correct way to do it.” Rein it in, Scarlet, honey, that’s all I’m saying.
The concept of what this storyline morphed into and how it all wrapped up was basically too far out there for my tastes. Sure, I’m all for empowered women, but I didn’t think the latter portion was all that well scripted. I stopped reading around 94%. It became a “Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever” read.
Content warning: Some sexual assault material. Some graphic bloody fighting.
Title: A Protector in the Highlands, Series: Highland Roses School (Book 2), Author: Heather McCollum, Pages: 386, stand-alone but part of a series, virgin heroine, alpha protective hero, overkill on the series theme, sexual assault flashbacks and current attempted one, no cheating, no love triangle, no OW/OM drama, wasn’t as good as I had hoped.

Scarlet Worthington a teacher at Highland Roses School for Ladies is left alone by her sister and her husband; she is happy to teach the ladies not just reading, writing, math but how to protect themselves. This all would be great if the surly Aidan Campbell wasn’t watching Scarlet’s every move. As Scarlet gets to know him and asks for his help in teaching the ladies how to protect themselves, greater threats from warring clans and the English continue to torment them no matter how much Aidan teaches them including Scarlet. Of course as Aidan is teaching Scarlet how to fight he also can’t ignore the growing attraction he has for her. Scarlet feels the same way about Aidan and knows when she enters in an affair with him that it could cost her everything including her life. Will Aidan be able to protect Scarlet or will he lose his heart instead? What a wonderful sweeping story of lush Scotland and all its magic. The vivid portrayal of Scotland, Campbell keep and the wonderful Highland School is just easily seen and imagined. The school is like any other but teaching how to fight is just so different. These aren’t coddled sweet Scottish lasses but ones filled with bite. The many dilemmas facing Scarlet and Aidan along with the growing attraction was what kept the book interesting along with quite a page turner. Unfortunately after Scarlet sleeps with Aidan the book did kind of dragged a little seeming in some parts boring. Yes the fights did help keep it interesting. Scarlet’s past also is never fully explained in the beginning so there is some confusion about the wrongness of liking and sleeping with Aidan. Also since this is the second book in the series it might help to read the first book rather than try to read this as a standalone. Scarlet is a wonderful heroine strong feisty and isn’t scared to fight physically what scares her. Aidan despite his surliness is quite a winning hero that is easy to like anyway. The book is definitely enjoyable, fun and unique especially with warriors that manage to be pretty girls.
Scarlett, sister of Evelyn and Nathaniel Worthington, escaped London in the early morning with her sister. She is running from her past and has agreed to live in Scotland to help her sister open and operate the Highland Rose School for women! This story takes place right after book 1. Grey Campbell and Evie have married and along with Nathaniel are taking a couple of items back to London. They uncovered an assassination plot against the king. They carry two items to show proof and to explain that the Clan Campbell are innocent and friends to the King. Grey leaves Aiden Campbell in charge and Evie leaves Scarlett to run the school. Scarlett hasn't left the safety of the village for fear of being attacked. Something awful has happened to her and her need to learn to defend herself and arm other women with that knowledge is the highest priority. Aiden is the one man she trust although she doesn't understand why. He can't stand anything English but is drawn to Scarlett immediately. They encounter a few trials and attacks that bring them closer and Aiden agrees these women need to be able to disarm a man bent on assault. While things go smoothly and they grow very close neither will share/trust the others deep dark tormented secret. Then BAM the good ole King of England, along with his wife, attendants and a blast from Scarlett's past shows up. They want Scarlett back and both Scarlett and Aiden do not want that to happen. We learn who the real traitor's are and a few more additions to the school make for an epic battle of Highland lasses who are armed, trained and have some very NASTY thorns. Evil Villains you have been warned!! This is a great "Steamy" (at times) love story with a staunch kick in the ballocks. Heather McCollum brings intrigue, love, spice and some great fight scenes to this tale!!! You do not want to miss this story!!!
“Forged from ashes of nightmares, their binding love was the most beautiful creation under heaven, made from the shards of their pasts.”
Scarlet Worthington is determined never again to be a victim. Doing everything in her power to protect the other young ladies at the Highland Roses School, Scarlet asks Aiden Campbell, the clan chief’s brother, to train her and the other students in the art of being a warrior…to give these "Roses" the ability to use their “thorns”. As each day passes, Scarlet begins to see that Aiden may be fierce, but underneath that gruff exterior, lays a kindness like non she has ever witnessed, as well as a past that has hardened his heart to all things English.
While his brother Chief Grey Campbell is away, Aiden Campbell has been left with the task of securing Finlarig Castle and its inhabitants. Sticking with his grudge against the English, Aiden wants nothing to do with Scarlet, nor her students. But Aiden has met his match when it comes to Scarlet, and her fierce determination to be trained in the art of self-defense.
When Scarlet’s nightmare comes knocking on Flinlarig’s doors, she tells herself that she is no longer going to run. Her fears will be buried in the past where they belong, and she will be stronger for having survived them…“Even the most shattered mess can be made into something stronger and more beautiful if we pick up the pieces.” Aiden and Scarlet find there isn’t anything they can’t conquer so long as they believe in each other.
This reader absolutely loved A Protector in the Highlands. Aiden and Scarlet’s story is full of intrigue, romance and kick ass heroines! Highly recommend and can’t wait for the next installment!
Scarlet Worthington flees from her home in England to the wild Highlands of Scotland to help her sister run a school for ladies. Burned in a fierce fire, set by English soldiers, Highland warrior, Aiden Campbell, has finally healed enough to take temporary command of his clan whilst his brother & new wife travel to London. That's where his focus should be instead of dealing with the feisty, beautiful Sassenach who asks him to teach her students. This is the second book in the series &whilst it could easily be read on its own it does follow on very well from the first book. We of course met both Scarlet & Aidan in the previous book & I was delighted that they had their story. There are plenty of secrets which are gradually revealed but it’s the gradual falling in love which is such a delight added with humour & this book was an engaging riveting read. Aidan is gorgeous but very dour so seeing him smile was lovely, Scarlet is feisty but her confidence has been shaken, but gradually she does gain confidence & then is a force to be reckoned with. Their attraction is there from the start but both fight it for a time. I look forward to more books in the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Review/Notes The roses get even more training to become a deadly group of women saving the day, gotta love that. Bit darker and bloodier than the first, with more action and a wild, kind of out-there plot.
Secrets... Hatred... Love In this 2nd book of the "Highland Rose School" you have Scarlet and Aiden's story. With Evelyn and Grey heading back to England with the heads of the traitors to show the King who were the real traitors and they're result, leaves Scarlet to try and pull the girl's school together with the protection of Grey's head man, Aiden. Scarlet has her reasons to never go back to England, Aiden has his reasons that he can't trust a Sassenach let alone have to teach them how to protect themselves. Scarlet, being a English girl an coming to Scotland with ideas of training young ladies the normal items they would learn but the extra classes will be raising many eyebrows especially for that era. Not just teaching, training and sewing but adding English traditions too. In all this Scarlet is faced with many things and people out to hurt her, and Aiden will see that not all English are bad. I fell in love with Scarlet, Aiden and the other characters so much, their actions surprised me in many ways and there is a surprise in store that really took me in. Heather McCullum's books take you back in time to the highlands where you can see the hills, smell the flowers even hear the many sounds of that time. You will enjoy this book and want to go and get more of her books.
An emotional story of two people who are both scarred from the past and need healing. After fleeing England, Scarlet's sister opens a school in the wild Highlands of Scotland. Aiden Campbell hates the English for reasons of his own and the women in particular. But left in charge while his brother is away, he is to teach Scarlet and the students to defend themselves. This fierce brawny highlander has a side that is least expected, being kind and patient that just made me sigh. As Scarlet and Aiden spend time together as he teaches the children, they are drawn to each other. He has conflicting emotions with his anger which seems to bring Scarlet back more to her normal self. She was amazing as she fought to bring her fears under control and face her past. Heather McCollum has a gift of bringing characters alive and the emotions are palpable with their interactions. These two were meant for each other and as their attraction builds it melted my heart. But when a Scarlet's past shows up in the form of an evil threat, all bets are off and the battle begins!! There is so much to this story I do not want to spoil it, but trust me, this is one of the best books of the year and I recommend it highly!! What more is there to want? A handsome highlander and a cover that is sigh worthy! I cannot wait for the next book in this amazing series!!
Scarlet, Lady Worthington flees London joining her sister Evelyn, in travelling to Scotland to start a school for girls and manage an estate their brother buys from the crown. The 2nd of a series, the 1st details how Scarlet’s sister wins over the laird of castle/estate which really wasn’t the crown’s the sell in the 1st place, battles traitorous Englishmen & settle down in Scotland. This 2nd book continues with Scarlet’s sister & brother in law travelling back to England with the heads of the traitors as proof of Grey’s (the laird & Evelyn’s husband) innocence.
Scarlet stays in Scotland with Grey’s hunky but rather surly cousin Aiden in charge. Marginally better than the 1st book; but still rather forgettable. After being molested in England, Scarlet is wary of men in general and the experience has left her somewhat withdrawn. Of course, Aiden who is initially churlish, thaws when gets to know Scarlet better, while she finds herself feeling safe and able to trust the straightforward, down to earth Scot. Of course.
I didn’t care much that the story involved a lecherous King (The King of England) & his equally lecherous court favourite who are both after (want sex with) Scarlet.
DNF. I think I need a change of genre & stay off hist-R for a bit.
