I haven't read an Eric Malpass book for decades and I liked it.
I like the little boy Gaylord who is so observant, following his logical thoughts and getting it wrong for the adult world.

My favorite quote of this book: Mrs. Darling to May Pentecost who showed Mrs. Darling her room: "I shall unpack my china in here, if your husband will be kind enough to bring it up. I do thinkit's important to be surrounded by pretty things, don't you?"

I think I will read some more books bs Eric Malpass in the future. They are short and still allow to dive into another world.

Beides tritt in diesem Band etwas zurückgenommener in Aktion. Dennoch ein kurzweiliges Lesevergnügen, begleitet von den altbekannten Illustrationen von Wilhelm M. Busch.

More of the saintly May being put upon, Jocelyn being his distracted and ineffectual self and Gaylord being, well Gaylord. This is a much lighter book than the previous books in the series. Very much an entertainment, and none the worse for that. No dark menace waits to destroy anyone's happiness and love finds a way through all barriers. Just the sort of thing to lighten a dark evening.

Read years and years ago and loved. Having discovered an ancient 70s copy in the parents' house, decided to re-read. Took an hour, sitting in the sunshine, which is where it belongs. Twee, but engaging. Somewhat dated, and I'm not really sure who the target audience would be these days. Worth discovering if you've neve encountered Malpass and fancy a very quick deckchair read.
