The book of Hebrews was an letter of exhortation from Paul. He exhorts us to have faith, hope and love. Paul teaches us how our lives must be conducted in order to recieve that great promise of salvation through Christ Jesus.
I highly recommend this book to all.

Hebrews is probably my favorite book of the Bible. I love how it brings the Old Testament and the New Testament together with the Lord Jesus Christ as the crucial and glorious hinge.

I felt Hebrews was a little more complex and harder to understand than Paul's other letters/books. However, I got through it's thirteen chapters, and it was very good ultimately. I guess I'll have to read it again sometime . . . and again . . . to try to understand it a little more! :)

I call Hebrews the “Faith Book”

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭6‬

its about :

*Jesus being superior over all
*Salvation for all who believe in him
*New covenant vs old covenant
*Living by faith rather than religion
*And it encourages us to mature in our faith.

“For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3‬:‭4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬-‭13‬

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭16‬

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭8‬:‭10‬ ‭

“None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭8‬:‭11‬

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬ ‭

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭3‬

“let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭2‬

“Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭12‬-‭13‬

“For our God is a consuming fire.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭29‬ ‭

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭8‬

“Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭9‬

So much richness!!

A few of my takeaways:
- Jesus gave one sacrifice for all!
- We are weak, the enemy is strong, Jesus is stronger!
- God's character is unchangeable, so the promise He made is also unchangeable
- We no longer have to be perfect ourselves, Jesus cleanses us. Now we may draw near
- No matter how far, how broken, how lost, how deep, He saves.
- He lives to intercede. To pray. To groan. To cry. For me. He goes to the Father on my behalf. My advocate. My righteousness. My purity. My spotless lamb.
- Christ's covenant is flawless and faultless
- He sacrificed once for all. It is finished and complete. Nothing more is needed, only to believe and receive.
- Jesus not only rescued us from sin's penalty, but He rescues us from sin's power, and Ge promises to rescue us from sin's presence.
-There is no forgiveness without blood shed
- Hold fast, for God is faithful
- Heaven is my home
- The reproach of Christ is greater than all the treasure of Egypt
- I am a part of the Unshakable Kingdom
- We are confident in Christ. He never changes. He is always the same. He won't be swayed, He is constant.
- Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not yet seen.

A prominent theme in Hebrews is the person of Jesus Christ, His supremacy and perfection, His role as mediator between God and humanity. The book of Hebrews also includes a very famous passage about our faith in Him and an explanation of what faith itself is.

I've read Hebrews many times already, but I always seem to find or realize something new whenever I read. The same is for the whole Bible, actually. Just another marvel of God's living Word!

Hebrews is a great book of Christian theology, aimed at and addressed to Jewish Christians. In some ways, it's like Romans, another theological book covering many subjects in a systematic manner.

The overall theme is the greatness of Jesus Christ. In no uncertain terms, Hebrews equates Jesus with God, calling Him "express image of His Person" (KJV), or as the NIV puts Hebrews 1:3

3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all
things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right
hand of the Majesty in heaven.

The book covers a great many topics, such as the priesthood of Christ, the meaning and symbolism in the Tabernacle and the importance of faith.

This book is a 'must read' if you wish to understand Christianity.

This letter or sermon to the Hebrews proclaims Christ as our great high priest, and as the perfect. final, and effect sacrifice for the sins separating human beings from God. We are urged to live in a way that shows God the honor and gratitude merited by His gifts.

My favorite part of Hebrews is the faith chapter. I find it encouraging to see how all of these historical Christians lived up to what God wanted of them as they leaned on their faith in the one, true God. And my favorite quote is "Faith is the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don't see."

For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
Hebrews 2:18

so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
Hebrews 9:28
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. I love the way the author weaved in the Old Testament and showed how the New Testament, ushered in by Jesus, was perfect. It's a beautiful testimony to the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf, His perfect life, and the intercession He makes for us.

But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception. For we have become companions of the Messiah if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start.
Hebrews 3:13‭-‬14

For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart. No creature is hidden from Him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.
Hebrews 4:12‭-‬13

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.
Hebrews 4:15‭-‬16

For God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you showed for His name when you served the saints — and you continue to serve them. Now we want each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the final realization of your hope, so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.
Hebrews 6:10‭-‬12

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater to swear by, He swore by Himself:
Hebrews 6:13 (How beautiful that God is the most reliable and trustworthy person you could ever turn to. It's His very nature to be trust-- nothing higher to trust and make promises on....) ...Because God wanted to show His unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, He guaranteed it with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
Hebrews 6:17‭-‬18 (We have such confidence and trust-- it is impossible for God to lie and we have no higher power to put our hope and trust in....) We have this hope as an anchor for our lives, safe and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 6:19‭-‬20 (You can't get anymore beautiful than this-- Jesus is God's reliability and trust exemplified. What mightier anchor does one need?)

Therefore, He is always able to save those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.
Hebrews 7:25

Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way He has opened for us through the curtain (that is, His flesh ), and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works, not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:19‭-25

Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, so that you won’t grow weary and lose heart. In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
Hebrews 12:1‭-4

Furthermore, we had natural fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness. No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the fruit of peace and righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead. Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness — without it no one will see the Lord. Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and by it, defiling many.

My comments here only refer to the Biblical text and not the introduction written by someone I do not know and did not get to read. But what about the book of Hebrews itself?

Here is another great book, inspired by the Holy Spirit, written by the Apostle Paul [probably] presenting Christ as Superior. Superior to Moses, superior to the angels, the Mosaic law, the Levitical priesthood, the prophets, the offerings of the Tabernacle/Temple... everything. Christ is the Creator, Christ is God in the flesh [God the Father Himself calls Him God]. What a great book!
In one sense, Hebrews reminds me of Romans. Romans builds a logical, Scriptural, powerful argument for salvation in Christ alone. Hebrews builds a logical, Scriptural, powerful argument for Christ as God, being superior to any religion, any religious leaders, any religious system. Hebrews also makes the great point that Christ's ONE sacrifice is sufficient to provide salvation to every person who has lived, is living, or ever will live.

3/8/21: Reading the TPT translation of Hebrews 11:34, I can't help thinking of two of my favorite movies, Avengers: Endgame and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

"Faith sparked courage within them and they became mighty warriors in battle, pulling armies from another realm into battle array."

On your left, ladies and gentlemen :-)

7/9/20:

"Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us . . . "
~Hebrews 12:1

These words have NEVER resonated as deeply as they do today. Do I need to explain why? Probably not.

That verse -- and the concept of the "great cloud of witnesses" -- form an immensely inspiring shield against despair in the time of COVID-19.

We're not going through anything new. As difficult as this year has been, many of our forebears went through far worse.

Not that this alone makes it OK. Far from it. But it certainly puts things into perspective.

The writer of this letter to the Hebrews is uncertain. Being as most of the letters have been written by Paul it’s a possibility that he’s wrote this one also. But it could have been someone within the Hebrew community itself.

It’s written to encourage the Hebrew Christian community to remain firm and not fall back into ways of Judaism.

Fave verse: 13:17. Obey them that have rule over you, and submit yourselves; for they watch for your souls, as they must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

2022: from my notes from my seminary class:

The book of Hebrews was NOT written by Paul! (It's not even really a letter! There is no formal greeting. It's more of a sequence of "Do this, here’s what I think…" - Exhortations and exposition; A sermon and a treatise.

The author of this text is reinterpreting Hebrew scriptures as pointing to Jesus.

Date: probably mid-1st century to early 2nd century; so AFTER Paul

Audience: unclear but not to the Jewish people - It is NOT asking Jewish people to convert to Christianity.

What is this letter about?

The letter is offering encouragement to people who are being persecuted.
The author doesn’t see them progressing in their faith so is encouraging them in their faith and commitment to Christ. And also to assure them that Christ is coming back. Giving confidence to them in this by showing how Jesus can be seen through the lens of Hebrew Scriptures pointing towards Jesus.

If we call this text sacred it is our responsibility to wrestle with it and make sure we do not perpetuate harm with the text and try to undo damage that has been done.

Either find a glimmer of hope in the text and focus on that or resist it and call it out, point it out and say we have to do better.

Supersessionism teaches that Christianity supersedes Judaism. (This is deeply harmful!!! Don't do this!)

We have to learn how to talk about this text without perpetuating harm.

We need to understand that prophetic literature was not about predicting the future. Prophecy is about calling out injustice and calling us toward something better - God’s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.

Quotes from the article we read by Dr. Anna Bowden:

“In contrast to an approach that attempts to redeem a difficult text, another course of action for the preacher is to confront the text, to tackle it head-on, to push back against its theology. It is good for pastors to recognize problematic passages in the biblical canon because it helps point to areas in need of growth within the Christian tradition. Confronting the text recognizes that these texts impact and shape our theology, and acknowledges that it is important to know what is damaging about our history, in order to avoid further damage in the future and perhaps to set right any damage of the past. A sermon on this passage from Hebrews might, therefore, lean in the direction of dissent.”

"First, this week’s epistle is dangerous because it is supersessionist in nature. Hebrews as a whole seeks to replace, or supersede, one theology with another—to replace the theology of the Jews with the theology of Jesus. Throughout the document, the author repeatedly reinterprets the Scriptures of Israel as pointing to Jesus. Both of the psalms cited in this week’s text are an example. The author uses the psalms to make an argument from Scripture that Jesus is a high priest. In other words, the author appropriates Jewish Scriptures for Christian advantage. Christians would do well to remember that Jewish theology does not recognize the foretelling of Jesus in the Jewish canon. We need to be more careful in our interpretations of Scripture not to deny the Jewish community of its own interpretation of its Scripture."

“If Christians are not intentional with the careful interpretations of sensitive texts, they risk reading the Jewish tradition through a Christian lens and therefore misunderstanding the Jewish religion as a whole."

“Preaching against the text requires a studied, skilled, and brave pulpiteer. The goal of any sermon is not to strip validity from a beloved text, but to demonstrate where grace may be found, even when tradition has unwittingly erred. Speaking against the Christian canon is not to abandon Christian tradition; it is to raise one voice of our tradition to confront another. This is how traditions survive; this is how Scripture finds new voice.” - from Dr. Anna Bowden’s article on Hebrews 5
