Throughout the Mediterranean region—from the South coasts of Spain and France through Italy to Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East, and along the coast of North Africa—people are passionate about the food they eat and produce. The result is a rich variety of dishes made from sun-ripened fruit and vegetables, olive oil and garlic, meat and fresh herbs, and seafood and grains. In Foolproof Mediterranean Cookery, award-winning author Claudia Roden brings you 40 classic recipes from the region. All the dishes use readily available ingredients and there's even a special menu section at the back of the book to help you plan your perfect meal.
Claudia Roden was brought up in Cairo. She finished her education in Paris and later studied art in London. Starting as a painter she was drawn to the subject of food partly through a desire to evoke a lost heritage - one of the pleasures of a happy life in Egypt. With her bestselling classic, A Book of Middle Eastern Food, first published in 1968, Roden revolutionized Western attitudes to the cuisine of the Middle East. Her intensely personal approach and her passionate appreciation of the dishes delighted readers, while she introduced them to a new world of foods, both exotic and wholesome. The book received great critical acclaim. Mrs Roden continued to write about food with a special interest in the social and historical background of cooking. Then came the BBC television series, Mediterranean Cookery with Claudia Roden and the accompanying book entitled Claudia Roden's Mediterranean Cookery. In 1992, she won the Glenfiddich Trophy, the top prize in the Glenfiddich Awards.
Not finished exactly because you never can be with a cookery book. I found this a bit of a treat, there are recipes from France and across europe to an area vaguely referd to as The Middle East, I would have liked the nationality of the recipes to be more prominent, even the menus at the back aren't created under nationality.....I remain unconvinced about eating a starter from France a main from Greece and a dessert from Tunisia. That said these receipes are fairly basic in their executuion so you wont be spending hours in the kitchen when you could be enjoying the food instead.
Excellent cookbook. I got it from the library and would buy a copy but seems to be out of print. I will wait for her latest to be available from the library (long hold list) and then will probably buy the latest.
A condensed version of Claudia Roden's Foolproof Mediterranean Cookery. So far, the recipes I've made have been hit (Lentils with rice & onions) or miss (Spinach & egg tian). Still want to try a few more before passing final judgment.
Oh, my, gosh, the recipes really are simple but the ingredients add that sparkle that makes people say "H-m-m-m, exactly what is that spice I'm tasting...this is delicious". Lots of photos and easy to follow instructions...
